NO. 129: SOME THOUGHTS FOR THE MEMORIAL

by Epiphany Bible Students

No. 129

Comes once more the commemoration of our Lord’s death on the cross, the time this year being after six p.m. April 3. This year 1966 the moon nearest the Spring Equinox comes new at 6:46 a.m. March 22 at Jerusalem, which makes Nisan 1 begin at 6 p.m. March 21, according to Bible reckoning. At the outset, when fixing the proper time for observance, it is well to remember that all during the Age there has been much misunderstanding and great controversy on the proper time to “keep the feast,” as well as over the proper meaning; and we believe it is a sound conclusion that almost all of God’s fully faithful people from the days of the Apostles have been wrong on the proper time to partake of the bread and the wine. This is due in large part to the Bible’s complete silence on certain features of the time segment. The record is very definite in Ex. 12:6 that it should be on the 14th day of the month Nisan; but nowhere are we told how to determine when Nisan begins. We must go outside the Holy Writ for that information – as did the Jews all during the Jewish Age, even up to the time of our Lord’s first Advent. This forces us to conclude that we must be generous in our appraisal of those who have erred on the correct time to hold the Lord’s Supper. By this we do not wish to condone a slipshod attitude. Certainly we should do everything right if we know how to do it right, and are capable of doing it right. “Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might.”

The general turmoil that prevailed on determining the right date eventually forced the Roman Church to fix an, arbitrary date, and to have the observance always on Good Friday: The first Friday after the first full moon after the Vernal Equinox was fixed as the time to observe our Lord’s crucifixion. In time this custom became so firmly entrenched that almost all of God’s people – fully faithful, measurably faithful and nominal – were led to accede to the edict. Of course, It should be clear enough from this arrangement that it would never be possible to have the commemoration of the antitypical Passover occur before the Spring Equinox; and we can find no record that even the nominal church ever did observe it before that time.

When That Wise and Faithful Servant appeared on the scene, and the seventh trump began to sound, the “due time” had arrived to remove the colossal rubbish heap of error that had accumulated over the centuries, and the date for the antitypical Passover also came up for consideration. He stressed the ethics of an annual observance, showing that the memorial of our Lord’s death should be an annual affair – just the same as a birth, a wedding anniversary, or our Fourth of July celebration of our independence should be but once a year. Seeing this feature clearly, he set about to determine the exact day and hour if possible; and, while he was a day or so astray at times, he impressed us all with the propriety of an annual observance on Nisan 14. And so far as we can find, he, too, never set the date before the Vernal Equinox.

But “the path of the righteous is as the light of dawn, going on and brightening, unto meridian day” (at high noon, when the sun seems motionless in high Heaven)—Prov. 4:18, Rotherham. Thus, it was only reasonable to expect that the beloved Epiphany Messenger would give this matter further scrutiny, which resulted in his conclusion that Nisan 1 should begin at six p.m. of that day in which the moon became new, even though that could mean that the moon might new almost 24 hours after the six p.m. which would start Nisan 1. Then he determined that the Passover was a Spring festival with the Jews, that it was never held before the Vernal Equinox; and this rule he followed meticulously during the later years of his life never once, so far as we can find, ever “keeping the feast” before the Equinox.

The historian Josephus was also one of the high-ranking priests in Israel, being contemporary with the Apostles, and whose Uncle was High Priest in Israel. Thus, he would be as well qualified as any one to know the method then existing for fixing Nisan 1, as it was left to the Sanhedrin to do this, and the High Priest was automatically President of that august body of men. Therefore, when he says the Passover must be kept when the sun is in Aries, we are pretty much forced to accept him, since we can find nothing better anywhere else. And at the time he wrote the sun arrived in Aries at the Vernal Equinox; thus, the Jews recognized it as a Spring festival. And there is no record that the Lord and the Apostles found any quarrel with this. The present Jewish Encyclopedia also stresses that the Passover is a Spring festival.

It may be well here to make a slight digression, with brief discussion of the Atonement Day service, which is definitely a Fall festival – coming as it does almost exactly six months after the Passover Spring festival – the Bible being positive that the Atonement Day must be kept on the tenth day of the seventh month – the month Tishri in the Jewish calendar. Perhaps the reason for this is to differentiate clearly between the Ransom, which is typified in the Passover Lamb, and the Sin Offering which is portrayed by the Bullock and the Goat in Leviticus 16. While these two fundamentals bear a close relationship, yet we must bear in mind that man’s salvation could have been effected by the Ransom alone, with the Sin Offering entirely eliminated; but the perfect Justice of God would have made it impossible to give man salvation with only a Sin Offering without a Ransom. Said John the Baptist, “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world,” the “sin of the World” being distinctly the transgression of Adam in Eden, which brought death upon him and upon all his progeny. It needs no argument that Adam bequeathed his children with a cursed legacy (the sentence of death “passed upon all men”—Rom. 5:12) – a legacy which no man has desired, yet one which none could refuse to accept, and leave for others to inherit, as may be done with material goods distributed in testament by our forbears. The Sin Offering of the Church during this Age would also offer a proper balance for the occurrence in Eden, where two were involved; and a proper balanced offset would thus require the performance of two in the cancellation – Jesus and His faithful Bride giving life to the human race, in contrast to Adam and Eve passing a sentence of death upon the race.

Therefore, it was certainly an orderly arrangement that the sacrifice which would eventually bring life to mankind, should appear in the Spring, the season when vegetational life bursts into verdant activity after the ice-bound deadness of the winter months. Thus, while the general rule is to use the moon coming new nearest the Spring Equinox to determine Nisan 1, yet there must be an exception to this rule if such acceptance would place Nisan 14 before the arrival of the Spring Equinox. Observing It before the arrival of Spring would do violence to an otherwise orderly and delightsome portrait. That is why Brother Johnson states in his February 1933 Memorial article that the service should be “NEVER BEFORE THE VERNAL EQUINOX.”

TYPE AND ANTITYPE

The expression in general use today is “The Passover,” when referring to the Jewish celebration each year, and this can prove very misleading unless we keep clearly in mind that in the primary sense there has been but one Passover – the one that was kept that night in Egypt as the Jews prepared to leave that country. Each succeeding year thereafter the celebration was merely a memorial of the ONE Passover. “Ye shall observe this thing for an ordinance to thee and to thy sons forever” (v. 12:24) “It is a night to be much observed unto the Lord for bringing them out from the land of Egypt: this is that night of the Lord to be observed of all the children of Israel in their generations” (v. 42).

And similarly with the antitype – there is but one: “Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.” Therefore, the bread and the wine each year are but a memory of the one great antitype – “This do in remembrance of me” (Luke 22:19). And, as with the Jews in their memorial year after year, so alsowithus: “As often asye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do show forth the Lord’s death” (1 Cor. 11:26). Also, while there was considerable variation in the remembrance of the type from the performance that one right in Egypt, there is considerable divergence in the antitype. Each year the Jews ate their lamb, the same sort of lamb they ate that first night; but in the antitype we do not crucify afresh each year Christ our Passover – we merely partake of the “bread, which is His body, and the wine, which is His blood” as a symbolism of that one great sacrifice. It is the service which Jesus Himself instituted the night before His death; and which He commanded us to do in like manner throughout the succeeding years of this Gospel Age.

Regarding variations in memory of the type each year, we would note some of the following: The blood of the lamb slain that night in Egypt was handled in this fashion: “Ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, dip it in the blood... strike the lintel and the two side posts .... and none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning.” (v. 22) None of this was done in the memorials thereafter.  Also, that first night was one of solemn intense watching, knowing the Angel of Death would pass throughout the land. This also was only a memorial in the years following, with no fear that the Angel of Death was prevalent among them. Thus, much of the solemnity and tenseness of that one night was absent in the memorials – so much so that copious drafts of wine were taken with the lamb and other viands – four cups in all – the service starting with a cup of wine, and ending with a cup of wine.  This was intended to imbue a sort of festive rejoicing into the memorial meal, although not to the point that the weighty solemnity of the occasion should be forgotten.

Another variation in the type itself and in the antitype is that the Jewish firstborns were in danger of death only on that one night in Egypt (another clear proof that there was but one Passover); in the subsequent memorials they were in no more danger than any other member of the family. But in the Gospel Age (which is typed in its entirety by that one night in Egypt) the spiritual firstborns are in danger throughout their entire lives of going into death – the second death – if at any time they forsake the covering protection of the “precious blood” of Christ our Passover. However, a notable feature concerning those firstborns that were spared that night in Egypt is that they also lost the covering protection the next morning, having the same standing as other Jews; in fact, every one of them over twenty years of age died in the forty years of wandering in the wilderness, the only exceptions being Joshua and Caleb. But in the Gospel Age the fully faithful firstborns are never without the protection of their guardian angels. “The Angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear Him, and delivereth then.”

IN SINCERITY AND TRUTH

To those who have acquired a comprehensive understanding of the correct time to partake, the reason for partaking, and the fundamental meaning of the bread and the wine, St. Paul counsels: “Therefore, let us keep the festival, not with the old leaven, nor with leaven of vice and wickedness, but with the unleavened principles of sincerity and truth.” (1 Cor. 5:8, Dia.) The principle of sincerity, honesty of purpose and open countenance, is given much emphasis throughout the Scriptures. A “good and honest heart” is the primary requisite of those who would receive and retain the Truth in its purity; all others are eventually given over to “strong delusion.” “Because they admitted not the love of the Truth (in honesty).... God will send to then an energy of delusion, to their believing the falsehood” (giving them over to error because of their insincerity, dishonesty)—2 Thes. 2:10,11, Dia.  It is reported that of Abraham Lincoln more has been written than of any other human being in history, with two exceptions – Jesus and Shakespeare. And this is not because he produced any great books; it was due in large part to the fact that he was just an honest man. When he saw clearly what he should do, he proceeded to do it in sincerity of purpose. Now much of heartache and turmoil would have been avoided among God’s people in this Epiphany time had the various Levitical leaders just followed this simple rule. But, “offenses needs must come” for “the trial of your faith”; so we should “think it not strange,” although it should determine us all the more not to follow in their steps. Rather, let us “look unto Jesus,” for “even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow in his stops.” To offer a quotation from Brother Russell:

“Only those who faithfully walk with God, partaking of His spirit, and humbly relying upon all the testimonies of His precious Word, shall be able to discern and discard the ‘stubble’ of error which has long been mixed with the truth, and boldly to stand fast in the faith of the Gospel and in loyalty of heart to God, while the masses drift off in the popular current toward infidelity in its various forms, Evolution, Higher Criticism, Theosophy, Christian Science, Spiritism, or other theories denying the necessity and merit of the great Calvary sacrifice. But those who successfully stand in this ‘evil day’ will, in so doing, prove the metal of their Christian character; for so strong will be the current against them, that only true Christian devotion to God, zeal, courage and fortitude will be able to endure to the end. It is written, ‘A thousand shall fall at thy side (into the second death—JJH) and ten thousand at thy right hand (into measurably faithful Leviteship—JJH); but it shall not come nigh thee, because thou hast said, The Lord is my protection, and the Most High hast thou made thy refuge.... He that dwelleth in the secret place (of consecration, communion and fellowship) of the Most High, shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”

To such – and only to such – are the “precious promises” fully available; and we may rest in the strong assurance of Zech. 2:7,8, “Deliver thyself, 0 Zion, that dwellest with the daughter of Babylon (Big and Little Babylon). For thus saith the Lord of Hosts, he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye.” This is primarily a Little Flock text, of course, and should be accepted in that light; but this very intensive metaphor offers graphic assurance of God’s watchcare over His own. We may easily grasp the meaning of this illustration when we consider how sensitive are we when some person attempts to stick his finger into our eye. The resentment and resistance are instantaneous; and so says our God is it with Him when some one plans evil toward those who are faithfully in His fold.  Brother Johnson offers fitting companion comment to this in E-13:251 – “Let us learn the lessons chiefly inculcated by Samuel and Saul, i.e., that by God’s grace we stand, as we abide faithful, taught us by antitypical Samuel’s life (the life of the faithful Star Members—JJH), and that, despite God’s grace, we fall, as we prove unfaithful, taught us by antitypical Saul’s life (the crown-lost leaders in Big and Little Babylon—JJH).”

To all of our readers do we extend cordial good wishes and the Lord’s rich blessing in their preparation for, and participation in this coming Memorial, which we shall hold this year at 1507 N. Donnelly, Mount Dora, Florida, at 7:30 p.m. April 3. Our warm welcome is extended to any who may wish to join with us in this service. As always, we suggest refreshment of the various features of the Memorial by a reading of the chapter in Parousia Volume 6, perhaps also by a pertinent article by Brother Johnson. As stated in previous years, we ourselves have followed the practice over the years of taking the Gospel accounts of our Lord’s trial and death, one each day for the five days preceding the service, with the Berean Comments; and we offer in conclusion St. Paul’s words to Titus (2:7,9): “In all things showing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine showing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, Sound speech that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.”

Sincerely your brother,

John J. Hoefle, Pilgrim

QUESTIONOFGENERALINTEREST

QUESTION: – What is your opinion of Bro. Jolly’s answer to the Ecclesias question on the church leaving early in anarchy – p. 12 of this Jan. P.T.?

ANSWER: – Our opinion of this answer by R. G. Jolly is the same as our usual observations of his perversions of the Star Members’ teachings. Since he was fully abandoned to Azazel in 1950 it seems very difficult for him to refrain from perverting any teaching he attempts to discuss – especially if the Star Members’ teach contrary to his “new views” or “strange fire” (false doctrines). In this he gives tragic repetition of all Gospel-Age crown-lost leaders, who thought they knew more than their Star-member teachers, and felt impelled to alter the truths they gave by injecting into them their own perverting errors. The result: Great and Little Babylon – ‘strong delusions.’

He becomes quite profuse in his comments on Psalms 46, on Revolution and Anarchy in this Time of Trouble, to bolster up his present contentions and confuse the minds of his deluded readers as to the clear and direct teaching of the Epiphany Messenger as set out in Epiphany Vol. 3; but never once does he do more than just give passing mention to the citation the Ecclesia gave; namely, p. 130, par. 81 of Epiphany Vol. 3. Says R. G. Jolly: “We have been in a general sense in more or less of anarchy ever since 1914.” Note Brother Johnson’s statement in par. 81: ‘Antitypical Elijah leaves the earth, which does NOT take place until early in anarchy, an event preceded by the revolution, which in turn, is preceded by the Great Company as such pouring out the seventh vial.” Now notice the seventh vial did not appear until 1917 – three years after 1914. Therefore, when Brother Johnson says the revolution will come after 1917, and anarchy will follow the revolution, R. G. Jolly is telling his readers to accept his nonsense that Brother Johnson was referring to a “general sense” of the Time of Trouble since 1914! And he expects (or hopes!) his deluded followers will continue to accept his nonsense in place of the sober teachings of the Star Members.

But let us go back to par. 78, p. 128 of this same Vol. 3, and note Brother Johnson’s statement:

“The Little Flock has not yet left the world in the whirlwind, which is not yet here.”

According to R. G. Jolly’s nonsense the whirlwind is here! This Vol. 3 was published in 1938 – 24 years after 1914 (R. G. Jolly’s ‘general sense’ whirlwind). So here again the Star Member is talking nonsense if we accept R. G. Jolly’s nonsense, which directly contradicts the Epiphany Messenger’s teaching in Epiphany Vol. 3.

Then let us follow on with par. 79, wherein Brother Johnson offers his explanation of Psalms 46:1-4:

“The Little Flock does not leave the world until early in anarchy.”

Clearly enough, Brother Johnson was speaking of some future event – sometime beyond 1938. Therefore, are we to conclude that Brother Johnson did not understand the “whirlwind” (anarchy) has been with us since 1914? Or that he was slipshod and shabby in his teachings? Or that R. G. Jolly is now attempting another of his perversions – “sleight-of-hand”? And why does R. G. Jolly ignore completely Brother Johnson’s analysis on pages 128 and 129 in the very book to which his questioners refer? Here is another quotation from p. 128 (79) and page 129:

“Psalm 46:1-4 demonstrates that the Little Flock will be in the world throughout the revolution (I Kings 19:11,12). While, therefore, in the flesh, it will witness the revolution, which will overthrow the symbolic dragon, beast and image of the beast; for Rev. 16:18-20 and 16:9 demonstrate that the revolution will overthrow these institutions;...... but the Little Flock does not leave the world until early in anarchy.”

However we may view the passing of the last Saint, it seems clear enough even to an ordinary sixth-grade boy, that these pages by Brother Johnson are a direct contradiction to what R. G. jolly is now offering.

In the last paragraph, col. 2, p. 12, R. G. Jolly quotes Brother Johnson: “Amid these conditions of fear, let God’s people be above fear, even as we read in the 46th Psalm.” And, since Brother Johnson properly includes all God’s people in his words of encouragement, R. G. Jolly then proceeds to write out of this the Little Flock after 1950 by his observation: “The Little Flock portion of ‘God’s people’ lived long enough in the trouble to see the mountains being ‘carried’ (overwhelmed) into the midst of the sea.” Had these same conditions described by R, G. Jolly not prevailed before 1936? Yet Brother Johnson was speaking of things beyond 1938 – the great earthquake of which Brother Russell said the French Revolution was a small advance indication of what we could expect when “the mountains are carried into the midst of the sea,” Have we – even yet up to the year 1966 – witnessed such an upheaval? There had not been a single instance of this between 1914 and 1938 – nor between 1938 and 1950 – nor even yet between 1950 and 1966! R. G, Jolly is hard pressed indeed when he must offer such sophistry to trusting brethren. The very citations he offers give transparent contradiction to his claims, so we once more offer Brother Johnson’s words respecting such Levitical mis’-leaders:

“Why do they so often quote passages to prove points positively disproven by those very passages? Is it not because they are in Azazel’s hands, and are thus blinded by him, and at his direction palm off his errors on the dear unsuspecting sheep of God’s Flock?”

R. G. Jolly says he is “so glad” for the ecclesias question. Yes, Azazel is probably glad, too – just real tickled at the perversions in his answer (and is probably delighted with R. G. Jolly’s discomfiture, as he doesn’t mind how much his dupes are humiliated either) – because Azazel means Perverter. “Because they poured out the blood of saints and prophets, thou gavest them blood (error) to drink; they deserve It.” (Rev. 16:6, Dia.)

LETTERS OF GENERAL INTEREST

Dear Brother Hoefle: Grace and Peace in Jesus’ dear Name!

I hope this finds you and Sister Hoefle well.

I want to thank you both for the beautiful Christmas greetings and the good letter telling me about Mr.–– writing for additional tracts. I do hope D.v. he reads them. I am getting low in my supply of tracts, so will appreciate some when convenient to send.

After I wrote to you before Christmas I felt so much more peaceful along the line I wrote. I will seek to remember more to neither murmur nor complain at what the Lord’s Providence may allow. We don’t know the lessons we need how many steep ways or deep ones we need to travel.

Enclosed is a check for $–- to use in the Lord’s work – or if I owe anything use toward that.  Do the friends sometimes send to any of the Brethren who are poor?..... I thought perhaps in some foreign countries – though I know in this day of pensions, etc., there doesn’t seen to be so many really poor, except in certain countries. I know in this country people usually have social security, etc.

I notice there are sometimes letters from brethren in California. I was wondering who they are. I guess they must live quite a way from here. It is a big state.

Wishing you both a good New Year in the Lord.  WithChristianlovetoyou and Sister Hoefle and those there with you. Your sister by faith, ------- (CALIFORNIA)

...........................................................................

Dear Sir: Please send the following papers: (1) WhereAretheDead; (2) What Is The Soul; (3) The Resurrection of the Dead. Thank you! ------- (CALIFORNIA)

...........................................................................

Dear Brother Hoefle: Greetings through our Loving Lord!

I received both your letters – the Nov. 12 and Jan. 6 – and enjoyed both very much. I have been getting all the papers on time, and they are wonderful! I just had to stop reading twice and sent prayers up to God for the wonderful blessings contained therein. I read them over and over as I do with the Volumes and the Scriptures.

Love and prayers for you all andallwithyou. Yoursisterintheonefaith,

PS – Send What is the Soul and Where are the Dead. Thank you! ------- (PENNSYLVANIA)

ANNOUNCEMENT OF GENERAL INTEREST

Our Memorial date coming this year on April 3, we suggest for our Spring Special Effort in volunteer and sharp-shooting March 20 through April 10. Our Nos. I and 2 (Where are the Dead and What Is the Soul) are for volunteer work at Protestant church doors on the first three Sundays – and our No. 3 (The Resurrection of the Dead) may be used for the last two Sundays. Please order the necessary literature in good time to participate. All literature will be sent free and postage prepaid.

The bereaved work is another avenue of participating in this “good fight” and we suggest that our brethren continue in the Arrangements as set out by the Epiphany Messenger in the January 1945 Present Truth, p. 9, bottom and p. 10, top (which please see) – Where Are the Dead and What Is the Soul for all except the soldier bereaved. Nos. I and 3 (Where Are the Dead and The Resurrection tracts) may be used for them. Let the various other groups include letters and other literature in their bereaved work, as they may be inclined; but let us continue in the methods prescribed by Brother Johnson. We believe his arrangements are direct and certain, and will bring the best results. We want the trumpet to have a ‘certain’ sound so that others may come to the Battle. We don’t feel the need to add to or change this Epiphany Arrangement for Antitypical Gideon’s Second Battle – a Battle that will be completed in this Epiphany period.

We also encourage our faithful Youthful Worthy brethren to be zealous in their pursuit of antitypical Zebah and Zalmunna (Eternal Torment and the Consciousness of the Dead—See E-5:237), as well as to continue zealous and faithful in their pursuit of Oreb and Zeeb (Sectarianism and Clericalism) – because they are assured of Victory in this battle against these two “prince errors” (See E-5:225,229)

Antitypical Gideon’s Second Battle is not over – and we invite as many of our faithful brethren to join with us in this “good fight’ as their circumstances may permit – in His spirit and way (arrangements) until the Battle is completed.

Letter from Jamaica

Dear Brother Hoefle: – Grace and peace Divine be with you!

We here are sending hearty greetings and sincere good wishes for a prosperous New Year, D.v..... It is with great pleasure we toll you, even though we have had much experiences and testings of various sorts during the year that is just past – yet still we have proven it is God’s hand that leadeth us, and after each trial we have had our blessings.

Your monthly articles sent us during the year have brought many refreshing memories.... We got much light on many subjects we were not so clear on, and point us to the Volumes... May the Lord bless and keep you, dear Sr. Hoefle and all that help at the Bible House ...... Yours in His name,

NO. 128: THE LAST DAYS

by Epiphany Bible Students

No. 128

My dear Brethren: - Grace and peace through our Beloved Master!

The heading for this article is lifted from St. Paul’s prophecy in 2 Tim. 3:1-5, which we now treat from the Diaglott translation: “Know this that in the latter days trying seasons (perilous times) will come; for the men will be self-lovers,” etc. We have underscored “the men” because of its emphasis in the original Greek, a situation occurring also in Hebrews 9:27, “It awaits the men to die once, but after this a judgment.” Among those schooled in Present Truth it would never occur to apply “the men” in the Hebrews text to men of the world; all of us know that the reference here is to the Aaronic Priesthood in Israel in the performance of the Atonement Day sacrifices once each year, at which time the High Priest entered the Holy of Holies with the atoning typical blood; and the edict was very clear that he would have died had his preparatory service not been exactly as given to Moses in the Mount.

But, in sharp contrast to the explanation given above, so often since Brother Johnson’s death do we find L.H.M.M. Convention speakers, and others who should be better informed, applying the Timothy text to the world in general, as they refer to the “trying seasons” (“Perilous times”) now gripping the world. While it is certainly true that the world is in “the days of Tribulation” – the Time of Trouble the Day of Vengeance – it is a sad distortion to apply St. Paul’s prophecy to Timothy as a forecast of events in the world. “The men” mentioned by St. Paul are exclusively teachers in the Church, as the entire context through verse 9 proves; and “the latter days” are direct reference to the Parousia and Epiphany days the last two special periods of the Gospel Age, which had their inception at 1874, as the Seventh Trump had begun to sound. This we believe is substantiated by the names Jannes and Jambres recorded in verse 8, these both being Hebrew names of practitioners of witchcraft (typical of especially deceptive false teachings) renegades from Israel who were truckling to Pharaoh for self-indulgence – self-lovers, money-lovers, boasters, unholy.” Thus, they would be typical of apostates from among spiritual Israel in the last days – the Parousia and Epiphany. At the L.H.M.M. Chicago Convention last October St. Paul’s prophecy was stressed by one of the speakers as an application to the world (which is not true); but never a mention was made of its application to the Church, which is its true and only application.

WHAT IS A SIFTER?

Sometime back this question was asked one of the L.H.M.M. Pilgrims (by R. G. Jolly’s appointment); and he answered that it was one who perverts the Truth. This answer is not only inadequate, but is downright error. Every member of the Great Company is guilty of perverting the Truth – some more and some less. But, would any of us wish to declare that every Great Company member is a sifter? Certainly not! It would include only such Great Company members as aspire to teaching positions and leadership in the Church; and in the Manna comment for July 18 we are told that antitypical Jannes and Jambres are sifters because their first love – the life of self-denial actuated by sincere love to God has been overcome by their selfishness and worldly indulgence. These evils will gain full control in the second-death sifters, but only partial control in the Great Company sifters. Thus, it would be correct to state that every sifter Great Company or Second Death – perverts the Truth; but not every one who perverts the Truth is a sifter. The descriptions of St. Paul would apply only to “the men” – those who aspire to be teachers and leaders in the Household of Faith.

The name Jannes moans “he deceives,” and he types those second-death sifters in the Parousia who deceived God’s people in Babylon and in the Truth movement, the latter being more familiar to us, of course, because they are a little “closer to home.” The name Jambres means “he revolutionizes,” and is typical of those sifters in the Epiphany who have led the Great Company astray, manifesting them as crown-losers. Rebellion, or Revolutionism, is the sixth S1aughter-Weapon Man of Ezekiel 9:1-7, and has been especially active during this Epiphany period. And the sifters described herein are “the men” whom St. Paul is discussing in his prophecy to Timothy. However, all sifters – whether Great Company or Second Death defile the Temple of God, as stated in 1 Cor. 3:17, where St. Paul discusses the house of the Little Flock, built upon Christ as the Rock and adorned with gold, silver and precious stones, and the house of the Great Company, built upon Christ as the sand and desecrated with wood, hay and stubble. And that this is specially applicable in this Epiphany Day (the Time of Trouble), is emphasized by St. Paul in 1 Cor. 3:13 – “The fire (destructive acts) shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.”

THE EPIPHANY DAY

The last special period of the Gospel Age is the Epiphany Day, having its beginning in 1914. It means ‘bright shining,’ and its brilliance is for the purpose of manifesting persons, principles and things, bringing to light the hidden things of darkness and making manifest the counsels of hearts. (1 Cor. 4:5) Thus, the question properly arises, Are we still in the Gospel Age? Our answer is, Yes, because the primary purpose of the Gospel Age has been to win new creatures; and, so long as there is one new creature left on earth, it would be self-evident that we are still in the Gospel Age. And, since the Epiphany is the last special period of the Gospel Age, we must also then still be in the Epiphany.

There are various other Biblical expressions for this time in which we are living; namely, The Evil Day, the Day of Vengeance, the Time of Trouble, the Epiphany, etc., each of which has its own special meaning, each expressing a certain thought not found in the others. And, while there may possibly be some argument about the year each of these periods began in the narrow and wide sense – or the “restricted” sense – there is no sound argument about the time in which they end: All of them end at exactly the same time. Both the Laodicean Messengers are firm in their expression that the Evil Day ends with the end of Jacob’s Trouble; both of them assert that the Day of Vengeance ends with the end of Jacob’s Trouble; both declare the end of the Time of Trouble will be at the end of Jacob’s Trouble; and both state that the Epiphany will end with the end of Jacob’s Trouble. Thus, regardless of when they start, they will all have a common ending; and this kept clearly in mind, we shall not be led too far astray by any sophistical twists that false teachers may attempt to impose upon us.

Later in this article we shall offer some detailed explanation on the foregoing expressions, but we merely mention now some Biblical terms for the great events that are scheduled, pretty much concurrently, to occur in this EPIPHANY DAY – the last special period of the Gospel Age:

(1) The Battle of the Great Day of God Almighty – Rev. 16:14; Zeph. 3:8; Isa. 13:4,5;

(2) Armageddon – Rev. 16:16;

(3) A Great Earthquake – Rev. 16:18; Heb. 12:26;

(4) The Fire of Jehovah’s jealousy – Zeph. 3:8; 2 Pet. 3:10-12; Mal. 4:1;

(5) A Whirlwind and a storm – Nah. 1:3,6,7;

(6) A Tempest of Hail, a Destroying Storm, and a Flood of Mighty Waters – Isa. 28:2; Nah. 1:4,5,8;

(7) The Besom of Destruction – Isa. 14:23;

(8) A Furnace of Fire – Matt. 13:42;

(9) A Lake of Fire – Rev. 19:20;

(10) The Supper of the Great God – Rev. 19:17;

(11) The Winepress of the Fierceness and Wrath of Almighty God – Rev. 19:15.

We believe our readers will agree that little or none of most of the above Scriptures has even begun fulfillment – much less have any of them come to a completion. Yet every one of them is due to see complete fulfillment in this Epiphany Day, as every one of then expresses some feature of the Time of Trouble – and the Time of Trouble is identical to the Epiphany Day, in which we are now living.

In E-4, pages 7 to 73, an exhaustive analysis of the Epiphany period offers copious Scriptural proof that the Epiphany and the Time of Trouble in its narrow sense are identical, the narrow sense being from 1914 to the end of Jacob’s Trouble; and on p. 72, bottom the Epiphany Day is also used synonomously with the Apocalyptic Day. One sweeping generalization of this entire subject by Brother Russell is to be found on p. 39 of Our Lord’s Return:

“As we therefore softly whisper, ‘Behold the Bridegroom!’ it is not with any hope of arousing the world to faith in the Lord’s presence, etc. They are unworthy to know, and would only misuse the knowledge now ( in the Parousia Day—JJH). By and by, in the Lord’s due time, they shall know in the period of the Epiphaneia, or Apocalypsis of the Son of Man. They will be awakened by the great crash of the day of trouble.”

In the face of such a clear and conclusive statement from That Servant (the same being confirmed by Brother Johnson), there are those who once claimed to understand Epiphany Truth, who now, either in whole or in part, attempt to negate some or all of its features. Among these are the “cousins” – R. G. Jolly and J. W. Krewson –, the latter of whom has the Epiphany as a special period of the Gospel Age ending completely in 1954 – before the Time of Trouble in its more violent features has even begun. We have exposed this fallacy in considerable detail in previous papers, so we shall now confine ourselves more detailedly with “Cousin” Jolly’s perversion of this teaching. His claim is that the Epiphany “in its restricted sense” ended in 1954. Why does he not use the word ‘narrow,’ which means the same as ‘restricted’? Clearly enough, some of his sleepy readers might just awake to the sophism being practiced upon them. Brother Johnson clearly teaches in Volume 4 that the Epiphany in its narrow sense began in 1914, and will end with Jacob’s Trouble. Thus, his ‘narrowing’ is at the beginning of the period, and not at its end, as R. G. Jolly is now teaching. As for ourselves, we accept the clear and Scriptural teachings of the Star Members, and we allow others to choose for themselves if they wish to accept the perversions of the “cousins,” who also at one time at least gave lip-service to believing what we “continue in” – what we still believe and teach, as herein expressed. And pertinent to this very situation, we offer a quotation by Brother Russell from Tower Reprints, page 4044:

“As the Apostle intimates, we find that some of the elders in the Church of Christ, instead of feeding the flock of the Lord and pointing them to their owner, to the food which he has provided (in the Scripturally proven Parousia and Epiphany Truth—JJH), the meat in due season, are on the contrary seeking to turn the flock away – to draw disciples after themselves (by teaching contrarieties on the true length of the Epiphany period, perversions on the Camp and the Court of the Epiphany Tabernacle, such as Campers Consecrated, Quasi-elect Consecrated, etc.—JJH). Taking for granted that some of the Lord’s people are more stupid than the ass, they do their best to turn them from the Master’s crib – His provisions for the necessities of His people in this evil day .... (turn them away from the Star Members’ true teaching—JJH). We have not yet learned to what extent these dear people have the common sense of the donkey; but we presume, in harmony with the Lord’s suggestion, that some of them will show themselves lacking even in donkey sense.’;

If any are inclined to feel we are too severe on such perverters, we believe all will agree that we have never at any time manifested the severity and unvarnished acerbity of Brother Russell as quoted above. And let us keep in mind that this denunciation by Brother Russell was back in the Parousia – in 1907 – a full seven years before the Time of Trouble in the narrow sense (the Epiphany period) had even begun. And many years before that (Volume 4, p. 581), he had warned:

“That great delusions, ‘strong delusions’ by Satan, are just before us, is witnessed not only by our Lord’s words, but also by Paul (2 Thes. 2:10-12) God permits these deceptions for the purpose of separating the overcomers from all others.... It is quite possible that some of these trials, siftings and delusions, may come closest upon those having the largest degree of the light of present truth.”

Certainly, the foregoing would apply first of all to those once enlightened with the blessed Epiphany Truth as an added rich feast to the Parousia Truth. And to the foregoing we would add some from Brother Johnson:

“Being now in Azazel’s hands, their minds are filled with his suggestions, which they set forth as Truth (as R. G. Jolly now does with his Campers Consecrated, Tentative Justification outside the linen curtain of Christ’s righteousness, etc.—JJH), despite what they had previously learned. (No one will dispute that R. G. Jolly had “previously learned” these things, and then knew better than what he is teaching now—JJH) As our Pastor has repeatedly shown, there has been an epiphanizing of persons, principles and things from the beginning of our Lord’s Parousia.”

To emphasize clearly some of the foregoing, we set out below a resume of those concurrent periods that comprise this discussion:

THE EPIPHANY DAY – As an act this period of the Second Advent may be defined as concurrent with the Large Parousia Day, having its beginning at 1874. However, as the last special period of the Gospel Age it began in 1914, and will continue to the end of Jacob’s Trouble. There is not the slightest hint in type or direct Scripture that this special period ended in 1954 in a “narrow” sense, a “restricted” sense, or any other sense – except in R. G. Jolly’s “non”-sense. Here is Brother Johnson’s clear statement on the subject in E-4, p. 21 (14): “In the sense of the second period of our Lord’s Second Advent it is limited to the time ,between the Parousia and the Basileia. It is used to designate the period of the great tribulation, the Time of Trouble.”

Before R. G. Jolly was abandoned to Azazel in 1950 he believed the above statement. “Cousin” Krewson also believed it before 1950; but neither of them believe it now. We ourselves believed it in 1950, and we still believe it – because it is substantiated by clear Scriptural proof. The Epiphany as a period of time is clearly defined by the EPIPHANY Messenger as the GREAT TRIBULATION beginning in 1914, and continuing to the end of Jacob’s Trouble – with no limitations of any kind – no “narrow” sense, or “restricted” sense involved anywhere in its description. While Brother Johnson expected a 25-month overlapping of the Epiphany into the Basileia – as also occurred with the Parousia overlapping into the Epiphany in 1914-1916 – he also concluded that the severe features of the Time of Trouble would be in full sway by 1954 – just as was true of the World War in 1914. In confirmation of this, we quote from E-12, p. 460:

“This symbolizes that it represents a reaching of the pit 40 years later than 1914, from which we infer that Anarchy will begin in 1954, as marking the end of the Epiphany.”

The reason Brother Johnson “inferred” the above was to occur was because of his expectations that the parallel would produce Anarchy in 1954 just as 1914 produced the World War. Volume 12 was copyrighted in 1949 – just a year before his death; and time has clearly revealed that his “inference” regarding Anarchy in 1954 – “as marking the end of the Epiphany” – did not materialize. But R. G. Jolly can’t see any of this! Surely, “their foolishness shall be very plain to all.” (2 Tim. 3:9. Dia.)

It should be noted here that Brother Johnson certainly revealed “the spirit of a sound mind” to “infer” the happenings of 1954, instead of offering positive statement. In this he was probably guided by the prophecy,

“The vision is yet for an appointed time .... it will not tarry.... but the just (justified) shall live by his faith.” (Hab. 2:3,4)

And we are still in that time when “the just shall live by faith.” The generalities of “the vision” were made very plain by Brother Russell and Brother Johnson; but the exacting details are yet a matter of faith. Thus, no amount of Levitical perversion (and nonsense) can successfully write one word into 1954 that is not there, or change by one day God’s “appointed time,” the detailed consummation of which is not yet revealed to us.

THE TIME OF TROUBLE – In its broad sense it began in 1874, and will continue to the end of Jacob’s Trouble. In its “narrow” sense it began in 1914, and will continue to the end of Jacob’s Trouble; and in this “narrow” sense it is identical to the Epiphany.

THE EVIL DAY – In its broad sense the Evil Day is much the same as “this present evil world,” having its beginning after the Great Deluge, and continuing to the end of Jacob’s Trouble and the institution of the Mediatorial reign. But in a very special sense “This Evil Day,” began at 1874 and will end with the end of Jacob’s Trouble.

THE DAY OF VENGEANCE – Being substantially the same as the Time of Trouble, it had its beginning in the broad sense in 1874 as the Harvest message began to declare its imminence – and herald its beginning – and will continue to the end of Jacob’s Trouble. Actually, it did not begin in a special sense until 1914, with the World War, and will reach a conclusion with the end of Jacob’s Trouble.

THE DAY OF JUDGMENT – We are adding here an expression not used aforegoing, because it is pertinent to our subject. The “Day” that God “appointed to judge the world in righteousness by that man whom He hath ordained” (Acts 17:31) began in its broad sense in 1874, and will continue for 1,000 years. In its narrow sense it began in 1874, and continues throughout the small Parousia and Epiphany days. During the Parousia Day – from 1874 to 1914 – the special judgment of the Little Flock was concluded, since by its end that select group had been individually and collectively determined for all eternity. But, during the Epiphany Day – from 1914 to the end of Jacob’s Trouble – we have the special judgment day of the Great Company as a class, of the fallen Angels, and of the nations as such. Before this Epiphany Judgment Day is concluded the nations in their present state will be no more; and the Great Company – as a Class, and as individuals – will have had their eternal destiny fully determined. They are the only class of human beings now standing their judgment-day trial for life. While it may be argued that the Youthful Worthies are also having their judgment, this can be true only respecting their future Kingdom Elect standing. Whether they now succeed or fail in their race to be princes in all the earth, their trial for life is not now being determined – their trial for life will occur during the Kingdom reign, and more specifically during the Little Season. As respects the Great Company and our present appraisal of them, we know of no type or direct Scripture that allows us to determine conclusively their present standing. There is, however, one definite rule for our guidance: New Creatures that die impenitent go into the Second Death – there will be no opportunity for reformation in Heaven. Also, the Judgment Day of the world as individuals is in no sense even begun, nor is God now accepting such consecrations, and dealing with Restitutionists as individuals (although they are privileged to be in a consecratable condition as was Cornelius, awaiting the date for God’s “due time” for acceptance) – although the Jehovah’s Witnesses would have us believe they are now accomplishing this as individuals accept or reject them (the Jehovah’s Witnesses!). That, of course, is another of “the strong delusions” of this Epiphany Judgment Day (this Evil Day) – a part of the “pestilence that walketh in darkness.” (Psa. 91:6)

It is pertinent to add here also that The Man of Sin will have his judgment manifested, and his execution carried to a completion, in this Epiphany Day – in the last special period of the Gospel Age – “whom the Lord will annihilate by the appearing (Epiphany) of His presence (Parousia)”—2 Thes. 2:8. On numerous occasions have we offered this text as a clear proof that we are still in the Epiphany period, with “Cousin” Krewson keeping complete silence on this clear Scriptural contradiction to his Apokalypsis theory; and “Cousin” Jolly making feeble attempt to reconcile this clear fact with his Basileia-Epiphany “parallel” perversion. His “overlapping” parallel (already more than eleven years going, and no end in sight) becomes painfully strained when he is forced to crowd Armageddon, Anarchy and Jacob’s Trouble into it, as well as the annihilation of the Man of Sin; and only those who are in the grip of “strong delusion” will succumb to such conglomerate Levitical nonsense. His “overlapping” is really an over-flapping – a nonsensical attempt to fit his eleven years-plus into a 25-month parallel.

As all of us know, time itself forced Brother Johnson to revise some of Brother Russell’s expectations; E.g., the length of the Time of Trouble, which Brother Russell himself began to revise somewhat toward the end of his life – although his revisions fell far short of actuality. Time also forces us to revise some of Brother Johnson’s expectations on the length of the Time of Trouble, because his expectations for 1954 have failed completely of fulfillment. Not to change such premature expectations would cause us to appear quite ridiculous. However, the basic, fundamental doctrinal teachings of both Messengers still stand firm under the most exacting scrutiny of the touchstone of the Good Word of God; and we ourselves have made no attempt to change any of them. Rather, we have been zealous in upholding and defending those features of the Truth. Thus, it has not been necessary for us to introduce to our readers any “strange fire” (false doctrine) in a futile effort to substantiate erroneous changes in the Star Members’ writings – “strange fire, such as justification outside the linen curtain of the Tabernacle (Christ’s righteousness) – “strange fire” such as claiming we are now in the Basileia, with the contradictory view that the Epiphany Tabernacle is still operative, etc. – “strange fire” that the Epiphany ended in 1954, before the more vicious features of the Time of Trouble had actually begun.

J. F. Rutherford was forced by his “new views” to abandon completely Tabernacle Shadows, just as J. W. Krewson is now forced to abandon the first chapter of the Epiphany Elect completely as respects the Epiphany period because of his “new views” – as he “continues in his errors” on the Epiphany-Apokalypsis period since the Epiphany Messenger’s demise. R. G. Jolly also is forced to repudiate large parts of the first chapter of the Epiphany Elect as he “continues in his perversions” of the Epiphany Messenger’s teaching on the Epiphany period – as we ourselves “continue” in what we have learned and been assured of, knowing of whom (the Epiphany Messenger) we have learned these Truths,

These observations apply also to large parts of Volume Four on Azazel’s Goat and the Youthful Worthies as respects both “cousins.” Note specifically p. 342, top:

“If our readers will keep in mind that The Tower’s denial of Tentative Justification during this Age is the foundation of its rejecting the Scriptural doctrine that those faithful consecrators from 1881 until Restitution sets in..... will be the Millennial Associates of the Ancient Worthies” .... etc.

And just as J. F. Rutherford’s rejection of Tentative Justification forced him to abandon entirely Tabernacle Shadows, so the perversions of Tentative Justification, and their “new views,” now force the “cousins” to abandon the faithful teachings of both Messengers on Youthful Worthies. Can any honestly say they believe Brother Johnson was the Epiphany Messenger when they reject the very foundation and basic Truths the Epiphany Messenger gave us?

JUDGMENT AT THE HOUSE OF COD

St. Peter informs us that “judgment must begin at the house of God.” (I Pet. 4:17) Then he asks the question, “If it begin first at us, what shall be the end of them that obey not the Gospel of God?” It is stated in 2 Thes. 1:7,8, “The Lord Jesus shall be revealed (by the uncovering—Apokalypsis) from Heaven.... in flaming fire (the Time of Trouble of this Epiphany Day, this “last day” of the Gospel Age) taking vengeance on them.... that obey not the Gospel of our Lord Jesus.” That is, the retributive justice of this Day of Fire, this Epiphany Day, will overtake the second-death class in the Truth who have done full despite to the spirit of Grace. Therefore, St. Peter poses the further query (v. 18), “If the righteous scarcely be saved (those fully faithful of God’s Elect people), where shall the ungodly (them that obey not the Gospel) and the sinner (the Great Company, those eventually “turned back from their path of error”—Jas. 5:20 – see Berean Comment) appear?” Here then are set forth the three classes of new creatures – Little Flock, Great Company and Second Deathers – whose judgment is “manifested” during this Apokalyptic Day of “flaming fire” (the Epiphany period). The Youthful Worthies must also stand judgment for princeship in this Day, although they are omitted from St. Peter’s letter because there was no such class at the time of writing his epistle – and even now theirs is not a judgment for everlasting life.

The Scriptures clearly reveal that “this present evil world” will dissolve through a process of War, Revolution and Anarchy; and, if judgment is to begin at the House of God, we should expect these evils to appear first in the Household of Faith. And this is clearly the way it has been; During the Parousia Day the five Harvest siftings certainly precipitated war (for the defense of the Truth) in the Truth Movement, which was eventually followed by the war among the nations in 1914. Then, since 1914 Rebellion (Revolutionist) has been rampant during this Epiphany Day among the various groups of Truth people – this also preceding the Great Revolution of Armageddon into which the world will shortly enter.

But, even before Revolutionism has run its full course, there are many evidences of Anarchy in the House of God. Anarchy is a polity without a head – every man a law unto himself. An analogy to this is to be found in Judges 17:6; 18:1, etc.: “In those days there was no king (Judge, typical of the Gospel Age Star Members) in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes.” During 1965 we received a lengthy manuscript from a brother (previously unknown to us), in which he advocates the abolition of all teachers in the Church, and inviting us to join with him in a campaign to “teach” his view. Said he, “The wise and sensible thing to do as a minister of the Word is to let God speak for Himself”; and he desires “to share this spiritual information” with us. In our answer to him we asked for his understanding of Eph. 4:11-13, “The Lord gave some Apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers.... for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the Body of Christ”; and if ‘they shall all be taught of God’ – without human help, as you intimate – are you not wasting your time, effort and money to attempt to “teach” others your present view, thus going against your own philosophy?” Up to now we have had no answer from him.

Certainly, all of us must agree that it has been through human teachers that we received the necessary instruction to bring us into Present Truth, and that there must be others now in relatively the same position as were we at the inception of our understanding of the good Word of God, and who still need teachers. “How shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach except they be sent? ... faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (Rom. 10:14-17) Thus, if we would do all things decently and in order, we cannot escape the conclusion that some in the Church are more qualified than others in their capacity to teach the Truth; and any attempt to negate this arrangement is simply Epiphany Revolutionism producing Anarchy in the Church – some of the “pestilence that walketh in darkness” (Psa. 91:6), the darkness that appears in the night, at the dawn of the Millennial morning. All such departures from orderly arrangement in God’s Household are simply “strong delusion” (2 Thes. 2:9-12) – some more symbolic witchcraft (especially deceptive false teachings) in this Evil (Epiphany) Day. We believe the following from Brother Russell is in complete accord with the foregoing:

“To be perfectly balanced physically is to be almost immune to disease. In other words, those who digest well what they eat, and who eat sufficiently and who work proportionately are so healthy that colds and other ailments pass them by. Those attacked by every passing ailment are usually either under-nourished or the slothful. (See Vol. 6, pp. 559-562)

“This is also true of the new creation. Some ‘babes’ in Christ are always ‘catching’ something in the way of false doctrine (“strange fire” such as Campers Consecrated, or the ending of the Epiphany period before its real features have even arrived—JJH) – usually because under-nourished in the Truth, but sometimes because their labors for the Truth have been insufficient properly to utilize the nourishment they have taken.

“Whoever has studied the Word to good effect has learned that its standard is the correct one; namely, that we must grow in knowledge and the graces of the Spirit by our daily walk in life. We must put forth first the faith foot and then the works foot, and thus proceed to more faith and more works. These ‘rightly exercised’ make us strong in the Lord and the power of His might. It is to such obedient children of God that the promise applies, ‘The wicked one toucheth them not.’.... (they are never in Azazel’s clutches).

“The Lord has promised for His Household the long-promised ‘meat in due season,’ ‘things new and old.’ Some have repudiated and violently opposed these Harvest blessings; others of us have embraced them and feasted upon them and hungered and thirsted for more and more of the same kind... Since tasting of the Heavenly Manna (as given to us through the Star Members—JJH) we have no appetite for other things (Levitical perversions and “strange fire”—JJH)... But there are others who are sure to fall away in this evil day..... These, without proper loving zeal, are indolent as respects labors-of love and self-denial on behalf of the Lord, the Truth and the Brethren.... they are sure to ‘catch’ some error.... It is noticeable that the ‘slothful servants’ (The Great Company and, in a secondary sense, their like-minded Youthful Worthy supporters—See Matt. 25:26,30 and Berean Comment—JJH), when entrapped by the Adversary, seem to become very energetic for the error.... But we must expect that such as refuse and neglect the various provisions and exhortations of the Master for their development .... will be permitted to stumble and fall (into such errors as Campers Consecrated, the length of the Epiphany, etc.—JJH).” Reprints 4129

The question may arise with some: Is the understanding of this Epiphany Day generally accepted by various Truth groups? Our answer is, No! So far as we know, we ourselves are the only group now presenting – and “continuing in” – this Truth as explained aforegoing. Those formerly associated with the Epiphany Messenger did at one time receive it as he taught it – and we have repeated herein – although they have now wandered far astray from their former correct faith on the subject, having rallied around their favorite leaders rather than “continuing in His Word.” However, there are others – such as the Dawns and the Jehovah’s Witnesses – who never accepted Epiphany Truth – denying, as they do, that the Epiphany as a special period of time, is taught in the Bible. To reach this conclusion, they must ignore completely certain Scriptures, such as 2 Tim. 4:1, “The Lord Jesus shall judge the quick and the dead at His appearing (Epiphaneia) and Kingdom (Basileia).” To state this text more clearly: “The Lord Jesus shall judge the quick (new creatures and fallen angels) at His Epiphaneia, and the dead (all human beings under the death sentence, whether in the tomb or out of it) at His Basileia.” Clearly enough, if the “quick” are to be judged at His Epiphaneia, this must be a special period of time. It is little wonder, then, that such as the Dawns and the Witnesses are confused as respects Epiphany teachings, arrangements and work, failing, as they do, “rightly to divide the Word of Truth” – which in turn causes then to “fight as one that beateth the air” – a text referring to crown-losers (See Berean Comment for 1 Cor. 9:27). With these groups in this Gospel Age Harvest, as was true in the Jewish Harvest, “They have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.” (Rom. 10:2)

As we view the panorama all about us, surely we can give thanks unto the Lord for His strong assurance that – “I will make thee a new sharp threshing instrument having teeth (the Epiphany Truth in this Epiphany Day fulfills this promise in grand fashion): thou shalt thresh the mountains, and beat them small, and shall make the hills as chaff. Thou shalt fan them, and the wind shall carry them away, and the whirlwind shall scatter them: and thou shalt rejoice in the Lord, and shall glory in the Holy One of Israel.”—Isa. 45:15,16.

Sincerely your brother,

NO. 127: RETROSPECT AND PROSPECT

by Epiphany Bible Students

No. 127

My dear Brethren:  Grace and peace through our Beloved Master!

In viewing events of the year just past we usually give little or no attention to scientific achievement – due in part to our own limited knowledge of such matters, but also because they seldom have little bearing on coming events as outlined in prophecy. But in 1965 a piece of inventive genius came to our attention which we feel will delight and enlighten our readers. We are well acquainted with a businessman in Detroit, Michigan, whose brother-in-law is a technician for a very large corporation. About the beginning of 1964 this engineer was assigned the task of producing an instrument that would cause the human heart to beat after the patient had died. After about eighteen months of research such an instrument was developed, and they had opportunity to try it out on a man who had been dead for twelve hours. By that time the blood was in an advanced stage of coagulation, rigor mortis had developed, yet the invention caused the heart to beat and pump the blood through the arteries and veins in rhythmical and normal fashion. However, after twelve hours in death, the brain had become so damaged that it was impossible to revive it; thus, the technicians had a live corpse on their hands – with the pronounced conviction, however, that the dead man could have been restored to life had they applied their instrument soon enough.

This phenomenon becomes all the more impressive when we recall that it was not until the year 1628 that Dr. William Harvey, of England, published his first paper outlining that blood circulates through the human body through the action of the heart and the vascular system. That was eight years after the Pilgrims landed in New England. For the thousands of years before that discovery man knew little or nothing about the circulation of the blood in his body. Thus we have come a long way in a short time; and offers vivid consideration of the prophecy, “In the time of the end many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.” However, from this account let none presume that we cherish the thought that man will eventually hold in his skill the power of life and death.  This is exclusively the privilege of our Lord Jesus. (John 5:26-29) Thus, while we do not discount the great “increase in knowledge,” yet we know man’s great knowledge could never gain for him the ability to “redeem them from death, or ransom them from the power of the grave.” And with this introduction we now proceed to consideration of the three essential topics usually considered in our New Year paper:

IN FINANCE

Once more we stress the wastrel spending that continues to pyramid the debt structure. In the past 36 years the national budget of the United States has been balanced only six times; and this in the face of unprecedented prosperity. Thus, the populace is forced to live speculatively, whether they like it or not. And this unsound practice is seldom given even passing notice, although now and then one of our abler intellects does speak up, such an instance being the following excerpt of a speech before the United States Senate – just after the Senator had described the plan to raise the national debt limit as “an exercise in fiction”:

“I do not know exactly what is to be done about it, but it becomes a rather interesting game. First, we raise expenditures and then we discover that we have run out of money. Then we have to lift the debt ceiling. After a while we spend more of what we do not have and then we raise the ceiling again.

“I like the fiction in the appropriation bills. Every one of them starts with the statement, ‘There is hereby appropriated out of funds in the Treasury not otherwise appropriated.’

“I think it is wonderful. There has not been anything in the Treasury that has not been appropriated for so long that the memory of man runneth not to the contrary. So up the expenditures and up the debt; then when we catch up with the debt ceiling, we shall raise it. Then we spend more to catch up with the debt ceiling.

“It is a great little business....

One of the most amazing, startling, and wonderful things about the debt is that the people have to buy it, and they do not know it. I have talked until I was blue in the face.... I look at an audience and say, ‘Be of good cheer. You are going to buy this debt.’ They look at me startled, as if I had hit them with a rock....’

“So I say to my audience: ‘You happy people. You are to be saluted.  You are to be cheered. You ought to be enshrouded in encomiums. You deserve the grand accolade. You own the debt. You bought it with your money.’

“If we can ever persuade the people that they have bought the hole in the doughnut instead of the doughnut, it may be that we shall start to come to our senses about this debt business and give it far more attention than it has had thus far....

‘All hail the most significant week in the history of the Republic. Raise the flags a little higher. Yesterday we pulled down Government income by $4 billion (Reference is to the excise tax cut. Ed.) Today we push up the debt ceiling by $4 billion. If there is anyone who can solve the magic and the mystery of this business, I will sit at his feet as his most eager pupil and say, ‘Tell me, pray, what is the answer to all this mysticism..... ?’

‘‘Mr. President, if the country is ever faced with any kind of economic crisis, we know what will happen. There will be a clamor such as has never been heard before upon the machinery of Government.... We shall be told: ‘You must do this and that.’ It will all cost money. I am so bold as to predict –and I am distressed to have to do it – that the deficits and the lifting of the debt ceiling may become larger than is reflected in the bill that is before the Senate this afternoon...

A certain Bachelor of Science, also acutely aware of our top-heavy debt and interest burden, asks the question: “What if inflation suddenly got out of hand – changed from creeping inflation to galloping inflation? (Such as occurred in Germany under Hitler – JJH) Under these conditions an investor in Government bonds (or any other investment that pays off in dollars) may get back dimes instead of dollars.... When politics and economics clash, politics wins in the beginning, but economics always wins in the final rounds.”

At present the United States Dollar is a promise-to-pay NOTHING, and is certain to eventuate in the collapse of the “free” world. This will not occur, of course, until the mis-led average man becomes acutely aware that it is “raining” and that his “umbrella for the rainy day” is nothing but a sieve. The day of reckoning cannot be far off.

IN POLITICS

Politics continues to improve with age, which means it becomes more repulsive with each succeeding year. And it is quite unpopular today not to be political. As an instance, the visit of the Pope to the United Nations. He wished very much to see President Johnson, and President Johnson wished very much to see the Pope, each believing his prestige would be enhanced by the other’s approval. But then there was the aggravating quandary – The Pope would not belittle himself by calling on the President, and the President would not belittle himself by seeking out the Pope. So an appointment was ‘‘arranged’’ for the President in New York the night before the Pope was due to arrive; thus, he was conveniently available, and neither of them had to lose face by the meeting.  As one friendly commentator said, “They have thought of everything!” Yes, they thought of everything that might win some votes – regardless of how unprincipled the method might be. When Napoleon wanted to see the Pope, he didn’t ask the Pope for an interview, he ordered him to come to Paris and sent his army to Italy to see that his order was obeyed. As a result of that great humiliation the Pope died in France – he returned to Italy as a corpse.

Another situation that has a strong financial flavor, but is in substance really political, is the International Monetary Fund, which had its last conclave in Washington in the early fall. This august body is really a combination of Money in the Government business, and Government in the Money business, and few there be with the audacity to criticize those in such high position; but the London Statist made bold to do it in its October 22 issue, under the caption “After the IMF Feast”:

“The Governors from 103 countries returned to their capitals bloated with good cheer and $75-a-day expenses. The bankers and business men who mill around the outskirts of the meeting have done themselves a lot of good, and the journalists have had their usual blissful experience of rubbing shoulders for five days, drunk or sober, with men whom it would take them months at any other time to get within miles of.

“Idealists continue to complain that the $1000-odd that the dual host organizations spend between them on this bean-feast might have been better used to feed the poor. But the Finance Ministers of the underdeveloped countries reply that they always have the poor with them, while a trip to Washington at the Fund’s expense is a unique way of completing their own education. The older world simply remarks that the meetings work – in spite of the maundering speeches – because although there are no decisions there is an unrivaled opportunity for taking the temperature of the international financial community.

“Nero fiddled while Rome burned.”

From the foregoing it will not require great insight to conclude that the very men who should label the IMF as a hollow hoax are the very ones loudest in their praise of it.  After all, $75 per day expense money (fully tax free) does not grow on every tree, and, Shame on You! if you feel inclined to criticize. It’s much the same as the Pope in his robe and jewels of glory and beauty. Could such a display possibly be wrong? Perhaps not – until we quote our Lord’s words: “The Kingdom of God cometh not with outward show.” (Luke 17:20, Dia.)

IN RELIGION

The religious events of the past year are also in keeping with the affairs of Finance and Politics. The Heavens continue to “roll together as a scroll.” This is perhaps best summed up by one financial publication under the Caption, “Thinking Things Over”:

“The most interesting thing about the Pope’s visit, when you think it over, was that it took place at all. It was not so long ago, as time is measured by history, that it would not have occurred to the Bishop of Rome to come to the United States of America. If he had, he would have set off an uproar of protest. Yet when Paul VI, Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church, spent a few hours this week in New York not only the city but the whole nation did him honor. The people lined the streets, the television cameras carried his every movement to people across the continent and the President of the United States journeyed from Washington to receive him.

‘‘All this made it a memorable occasion. It was also one to dramatize the great changes that have taken place in this country, in the world and within the Roman Church itself. Paradoxically it dramatized as well those things which endure amid the changes of men. One reason for the change, of course, is a simple statistical one: There are more Catholics in the United States than there used to be. The English Colonies from which the country sprang were almost wholly protestant, which in those days marked a political as well as a religious difference. Although we pride ourselves in the tradition of religious freedom, in most of those colonies Roman Catholicism was legally proscribed. As late as 1800 there were barely 50,000 Catholics in the whole country. Today their number approaches 50 million.....

“If we are more tolerant, it is because, as a people, we no longer care so much about those ideas. This is as true among the Catholics as among the Protestants, the Jews, or the non-believers in anything. Nowadays the arguments are debated without passion on quiet television panels. Or, to put the matter another way, the growth of religious tolerance among the people has been paralleled by an increase in religious apathy. That this is so is in part, surely, due to changes within the Roman Church itself. It too has altered and is altering more. And if apathy is too strong a word for those who profess its faith, it is certainly true that those who profess it have lost their militancy, their unshaken certainty in the dogmas of 2,000 years in whose name, once, men were to put to wrack and wheel. The saints of the past would find it passing strange to hear assembled bishops debating not the issue but the words to express the acceptance of religious liberty by the one, true Church; or hear priests raising their voices to debate birth control and other long settled dogmas. There is no doubt that the winds of change blow through Rome.

“You do not have to be a Catholic, or even a Christian, to long for something that will restore to man his spirit, his kinship with something outside himself, a spirit stripped from him by the rationalizations of science and the materialism of ideologies.

“Put briefly, the surmise is that great numbers of people watched the Bishop believing not in anything, but wanting to believe in something, hoping for some mystery that would give them back again their faith. This is the strength of the Roman Church. If you read its history as a rational man, you cannot escape its brutality, its terrors, even its evils. Though raised up in the name of God, it is an institution created by men no less frail and fallible than their brothers. That is why in its past you can find anything you wish to look for.... We all long for what is lost. And so perhaps this brief visit served, if nothing else, to remind us of the paradox of our age.”

The foregoing is what would seem to be a detached viewpoint – probably not written by a Roman Catholic – furbished and moderated to cover over the heinous crimes of the “one true Church,” the sins of the past, which should be forgotten in the camaraderie of the present. But those of us who know the past for what it really is will have none of it; we leave it for those who are unschooled in the proper evaluation of such things. The plea for tolerance is merely the child of necessity – certainly not a product of the heart. “The beast which I saw was like unto a leopard” (Rev. 13:2) – spotted black and white as occasion would dictate. But the spirit of Combinationism is rampant on all hands, and is certain to grow worse before it becomes better. As one observer has stated, the “portest” is now removed from “Protestantism,” but the “ant” is still there; they are aimlessly  milling around.

Nor is R. G. Jolly one whit behind the chiefest of Combinationists, as was so clearly apparent at the Chicago Convention October 29-31. Some one put in the question: If the saints are to engage in Antitypical Gideon’s Second Battle to a completion, would that not indicate that some of them are still here with us? And R. G. Jolly’s answer (not verbatim): “Brother Johnson states that the Little Flock participates unto a completion, which they did unto a completion when the last Little Flock member was glorified Oct. 22, 1950.” We now refer our readers to E-5:158 (23):

“The triumph of Gideon’s little army over a host typified the final victory of Christ and His followers over the hosts of sin... The 300 gained their victory in two battles. These type the two conflicts of the final victory of the Little Flock.” The first victory of the 300 was the confession of the sins of the people over Azazel’s Goat, which was completed by the fall of 1916 – with EVERY MEMBER OF THE LITTLE FLOCK THEN LIVING PARTICIPATING TO FINAL VICTORY. Then Brother Johnson continues: “The antitypical second battle represents the present (in the year 1938) conflict against eternal torment, and the Consciousness of the Dead, wherein the Little Flock participates unto a completion.”

Certainly only one befuddled by Azazel would be moved to offer the sophistical twist that Brother Johnson meant participation until the “completion” of the Little Flock in Glory (no matter whether the Battle was Victory to a completion for them or not); whereas, the Epiphany Messenger was clearly referring to the “completion” of the battle – the same as he was referring to the completion of the First Battle (which they victoriously completed). And hand-in-glove with this atrocity in error R. G. Jolly praised Billy Graham for bringing many to justification in Big Babylon – the same Billy Graham who uses his silver-tongued oratory to belch forth eternal torment and man’s “immortal soul,” thus offering an open challenge (as did Goliath to David) to those who are waging antitypical Gideon’s Second Battle. Here indeed is Combinationism in a most unsavory setting!

Fitting companion to the foregoing is Brother Johnson’s comment in E-5:151 (14): “Satan uses the Great Company for his purposes, while the Lord uses the Little Flock for His purposes” – to annihilate antitypical Zebah and Zalmunna. Thus, in the same breath in which R. G. Jolly now eliminates the Saints, he champions one who is among the chiefest in supporting Zebah and Zalmunna – the very ones the Little Flock are commanded to destroy. Having eliminated the Little Flock as leaders from the scene of battle, he now considers himself free to commend at least one of the leaders of Zebah and Zalmunna, who is offering these reprehensible errors to his converts. And how apropos are the Manna comments for November 14:

“Those who arise from among the brethren, taking teaching positions, and using them to falsify the teachings of the Word, are of two classes: Great Company and Second Death sifters. Both teach doctrines that are perversions of the Truth, though the latter class does worse than the former class in this respect. They do so to win a following. God’s Very Elect take heed of all three classes, and do so by studying, practicing and spreading the Truth.”

And all these Combinationists are fully convinced they can convert Israel to Christianity – that they can convert the entire world to Christianity – if they have the wherewith. All they need is YOUR money. Just a few of your dollars – and the same from millions of others like you – and the problem is practically solved. The same old package with just another label on it – Priesthood – Priestcraft – Priest-“graft.” We believe it requires little persuasion that the ideal state for all professionals – doctors, lawyers, preachers – is for them to be economically independent. Then, with the fees eliminated, with no need for begging, with no occasion for false or padded charges, they could all afford to tell the truth, to follow their vocations for the love of it. ‘Tis an ideal devoutly to be desired!

While the Jehovah’s Witnesses have not the least sympathy for Combinationism with other groups – they are at the other extreme, rigidly sectarian – “bound in affliction and iron; because they rebelled (revolutionized) against the words of God (the Harvest Truth), and contemned the counsel of the most High” (the arrangements given by the Lord for the Harvest work) – Psa. 107:10,11. The Witnesses now make determined claim to being the “one true Church,” even as their great twin, the Roman Church, is reducing its claim of one true Church to an inaudible whisper in a desperate effort to effect Combinationism. And, just as the Roman Church went from error to worse error when they were most vociferous in their claims of infallibility, so the Witnesses now have lost one truth after another which once adorned them under Brother Russell. ‘‘Where the spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty”; and, conversely speaking, Where liberty is lacking, the spirit of the Lord is also sadly lacking. No one in their meetings is allowed to question the voice of “the Channel” (the Watch Tower publications); thus, the Apostle’s words to ‘‘prove all things” become meaningless to them. On p. 730 of the December Watch Tower the question is asked: “What freedom have the religious leaders of Christendom and Jewry given to them?” Therefore, we would now propound the question to the Witnesses – What freedom have your religious leaders given to you? Of our own knowledge we know of multiplied instances where their members have been disfellowshiped for questioning the teachings and arrangements of the Watch Tower. Thus, there is less religious liberty in the Witness organization than in any other religious organization on earth today.

As we consider the events of the year just past, with the overruling Goodness of Him who is ever mindful of the welfare of His people, we face the New Year with resolute confidence and the strong assurance that “No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper.” This, then, is our ardent wish for all, as we reciprocate the many Holiday good wishes that have come to us. “Beloved, I desire concerning all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health.... even as thou walkest in the Truth.” (3 John 2-3) And to all who “walk in the Truth” the promise is certain, “There shall no evil befall thee.”

Sincerely your brother,

John J. Hoefle, Pilgrim

Your sister in the Faith ------- (PENNSYLVANIA)

...............................................................................

My dear Brother Hoefle: Christian greetings in His dear Name!

It has taken me longer to reply to your letter and questions than I expected.... I was sure Sister ------- had records of these events – about Brother Daniel Toole’s entrance to Taft..... He changed his views to Bro. Johnson along 1933-1934, she said.... When I heard the Truth teachings, it was what I had been seeking all my life. I had loved the Bible and God since a child of five or six years of age, but the questions I asked no one seemed to have a satisfactory answer .... So with my husband to help me in the deep and true meaning of God’s Word I was well instructed. He loved to go over each lesson. The Class had studies twice a week, and I was his student. It came so clear to him – where with me some verses seemed too deep. He was happy to clear it up. Each one in the Class used to say my husband had shown such improvement – grasped the Truth more than any one in the Class. But I saw the change more than they – due to his constant mind, desire to study more and get acquainted with the O.T. and N. T. His disposition was so changed from a fiery temper to calmness and peace of mind. On his job his coworkers were amazed at his knowledge of world affairs, and of the Bible according to present events....

With this last line I pray each of you and family are feeling quite well and I send Christian love to each one. As ever your sister in Truth, with prayers for each of us ------- (CALIFORNIA)

.......................................................

My dear Brother Hoefle: Greetings of Christian love in the Masters Name!

Thanks for the literature... I also received the December paper and found it to be very amusing (and tragic, too, for one who has had such great opportunities as R. G. Jolly! – JJH), especially in his presentation on Psalm 24, with his half-truths that are more misleading to the Measurably Faithful and careless ones, as to give them a false and incorrect idea of crown-losers and uncleansed Youthful Worthies’ hope. We would say it is good that the “chronic fault-finder” is always there, for by now the ‘clean’ Leader of the LHMM would have gone very much further than he has. The Questions put to him at the Chicago Convention were intelligently put. They seem to have shocked him.... as can be seen by the way he answered them – especially the one on the Youthful Worthies and Consecrated Campers and THE BOOK OF LIFE – shows how much he is confused on these two classes. When he said Yes that these two classes begin to inscribe their names in the Book of Life now at consecration, it is nonsense (Yes, as applicable to his Consecrated Campers, but quite true of the Youthful Worthies – an “elect” class – as Bro.  Johnson has so ably taught us. It seems R. G. Jolly has forgotten the elemental truth that the Book of Life for Restitutionists has not yet been opened--JJH)

Continue to pray for us, as we cease not to make mention of you. Christian love to you, Sister Hoefle and the dear ones with you.

Your  Brother  by  the  Grace   of   God, ------- (TRINIDAD)

NO. 126: THE PHILADELPHIA CONVENTION - JEHOVAH'S MOUNTAIN

by Epiphany Bible Students

No. 126

My dear Brethren: Grace and peace through our Beloved Master!

At the Philadelphia labor-Day Convention R. G. Jolly discoursed on the above subject, parts of which were excellent so long as he adhered to the Truth. In fact, many of those present – unskilled in the Word of Truth – were loud in their praise of his service; which should occasion no surprise, as he always seems to have plenty of applause regardless of how atrocious his errors may be. This same characteristic has been in evidence in Big Babylon throughout the Gospel Age. All error must have some Truth in it, otherwise no one would believe it; and the case we now consider bears marked evidence of this truth.

The basic Scripture discussed was Psa. 24, with special emphasis on vs. 3 and 4: “Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord?” He generalized on this question in a very misleading manner, never at any time offering the real truth on it. Half-truths are more misleading than whole errors; and the present instance is vivid proof of this conclusion. David's answer to his own question clearly demonstrates it would be only the Fully Faithful, the Little Flock, who would attain this glorious triumph: “He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.” Thus, when attempting to palm this Psalm off as a promise to any crown-loser, it offers a very misleading error.

The word “hill” in the text is from the Hebrew “har” – meaning a mountain, or range of hills. In this instance we believe it is clearly apparent David was referring to a specific mountain – Jehovah's mountain, Mount Zion. This is graphically confirmed in Psa. 2:6: “I have set my king upon my holy hill of Zion” which the marginal references would read better thusly: “I have anointed my king (Jesus) upon Zion, the hill (“har,” mountain) of my holiness.” The word “hill” in this text is from the Hebrew “har” – the same word contained in Psa. 24:3. This same thought is also found in Psa. 72:3 (although the Hebrew “gibah” here for mountain): ''The mountains shall bring peace (prosperity) to the people.” As Brother Johnson has so convincingly shown, the mountains in this text refer to Mount Zion and Mount Moriah, and “the little hills” are Acra and Bezetha – all four of these promontories being found within the walls of the City of Jerusalem, the same being representative of the four elect classes who will indeed bring lasting “peace and prosperity to the people” of earth: Little Flock (Mount Zion), the Ancient Worthies (Mount Moriah), the Great Company (the Hill Acra), and the Youthful Worthies (the Hill Bezetha). While Moriah is mentioned first in the Old Testament, Zion – which later becomes prominent, especially after the Jews captured Jerusalem at David's direction – is the higher peak of the two, picturing forth the superior position of the Little Flock over the Ancient Worthies in the Messianic Kingdom. Thus, it requires little elaboration to determine that “the Hill of the Lord” in Psa. 24:3 is just another way of saying, “Who shall ascend into Mount Zion”; that is, who shall attain to the glory of the Little Flock.

The specifications for this attainment are also Little Flock requirements and characteristics: (1) “clean hands” – “An honest life, clean actions, clean conduct, determined opposition and resistance to sin in all its forms,” etc. (See Berean Comments); (2) “a pure heart” – good intentions, “a single-hearted purpose” (not the double mind of the Great Company); (3) “who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity” – “humble, meek, modest, candid and sincere” (not the over-weaning approbativeness found in some crown-losers – See E-10:585, top); (4) “nor sworn deceitfully” – “has not made a solemn covenant of consecration with the Lord and willfully despised or ignored it” (a charge recorded against all “Sinners,” or crown-losers). As Brother Russell has so aptly stated, “there is no excuse for any one to be in the Great Company,” because the Lord gave each and every one full cooperation and help to retain their place in the High Calling.

The Hebrew word “har” is the same word found in Isa. 2:2,3: “The mountain (har) of the Lord's house shall be established in the top of the mountains” (har) – that is, the Lord's Kingdom shall overtop or overrule all earthly kingdoms. And verse 3 clearly corroborates our conclusions aforegoing that “the hill of the Lord” is indeed only Mount Zion: “Let us go up to the mountain (har)of the Lord.... for out of Zion shall go forth the law” – visibly from the Ancient Worthies in Jerusalem, and invisibly from the glorified Christ (the spiritual Mount Zion).

These thoughts receive further proof from Isa. 25:7: “He will swallow up in this mountain (har) the face of the covering (of death) cast over all people, and the veil (of ignorance, superstition and fear) that is spread over all nations.” Here again “this mountain” (har) is from the same word as “the hill” (har) in Psa. 24:3. It is truly tragic to observe such an uplifting and delightsome revelation perverted in the manner it was done at Philadelphia; but Azazel means Perverter, and it seems almost impossible for R. G. Jolly to touch any Truth since his abandonment to Azazel in 1950 without injecting some perversion into it. Of course, this evil of perverting the Truth (Azazel means Perverter) is of long standing, having come into prominence in the days of Samuel the Prophet. “Samuel's sons walked not in his ways but turned aside.... and perverted judgment” (1 Sam. 8:3) – perverted the true teachings of the Star Members into error. And this same evil has persisted all during the Gospel Age, as the wayward sons (crown-lost ministers) of antitypical Samuel (the Star Members) have perverted every stewardship doctrine and large parts of right practice that the Star Members established. And, since 1950 R. G. Jolly is doing his best to conform to the evils of his kinsmen of the past. And because we point this out R. G. Jolly labels us “chronic fault-finder” – although we realize, of course, that is the only answer left to him. Clearly enough, the Lord found the same fault with him (perversion of the Truth and its Spirit), when He ejected him from the Little Flock. None of those “who lifted up his soul unto vanity” was permitted to “ascend into the hill of the Lord” – Mount Zion; and none of those who were ejected from the Holy belong to the “pure in heart,” and to those who had “clean hands.”

THE CHICAGO CONVENTION – “BIBLE QUESTIONS”

On Sunday morning October 31 some pointed questions, not originated or prompted by us, were submitted for answer by R. G. Jolly. The nature of those questions indicated very clearly that some of those present are doing some thinking – just as the answers also demonstrated very clearly that R. G. Jolly is still firmly in the clutches of Azazel, and is still motivated by “strong delusion.”

One such question was something after this manner: If we are to condemn any one as a sifter, should we not read some of his opinions ourselves, rather than just taking some one else's word for it? R. G. Jolly's answer (not verbatim): “When Jesus labeled Judas a sifter, did the other eleven Apostles decide they wanted to hear Judas' side of the matter?” This is the sort of answer the Jesuits have offered against all the Fully Faithful Reformers; and demonstrates, even to a novice, Azazel's sophistry. When St. Paul counseled “Prove all things,” was it his thought that our “proof” should be established by taking the word of a self-admitted crown-loser as sufficient? Just how many would have accepted the “Present Truth” during the Epiphany had they followed such advice? In fact, early in the Epiphany R. G. Jolly himself strongly condemned the Society people for doing the very thing he is now advising. “How are the mighty fallen!” Such counsel is exactly what the Jesuits advise benighted Catholics to do – if they expect to continue as “good” Catholics. Of course, we realize only too well that he fears our papers, because he is not so befuddled by Azazel that he cannot recognize what would happen – and what in fact is happening – with those who do “prove all things” by reading our presentations without prejudice: They soon develop a distinct aversion for R. G. Jolly's “strong delusions.”

He also condemned us for ridiculing his Attestatorial Service, which early in 1954 he based upon the 1914 “parallel.” When such people as he fall into the hands of Azazel, they talk all sorts of nonsense; and the nonsense is so apparent in the present instance that even R. G. Jolly was crafty enough not to mention the “parallel.” In 1914-1916 every Little Flock member eventually engaged in that service; and it was accompanied by such marked success that no unbiased mind has the slightest doubt about its veracity. R. G. Jolly's 1954 effort was no “parallel” whatever in point of time (he claims his Attestatorial Service is still proceeding after eleven years, as against the 25 months in 1914-1916); it bears not the slightest resemblance in results (only an infinitesimal fraction of the Great Company has engaged in it, having even less of them now than he had at its inception in 1954); the “signs of the times” have not provided one iota of corroboration for his effort, whereas, there was unmistakable proof in 1914 of that true Attestatorial Service. Thus, is it at all strange that we should ridicule his contention? It does not require a savant to recognize his claims for just what they are: Nonsense – “strong delusion” – counterfeit! They are so shallow, empty, non-existent that we would not even give them passing notice were it not that we consider it our obligation to issue a witness against him and against those who support him in his evil ways. “Had I not spoken unto them, they had not had sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin.” (John 15:22--margin)

Another question asked if we now have the Epiphany or the Basileia Tabernacle if the Epiphany ended in any way in 1954. Of course, this inquiry forced him to admit we are still in the Epiphany, even though he insists we have also entered the Basileia. Was there any such “parallel” in 1914? once we reached the Epiphany as the last special period of the Gospel Age, was not Brother Johnson very definite that the Gospel-Age Tabernacle was no more, the Epiphany Tabernacle had then replaced it? And this is in keeping with his teaching in E-11:591 that only one Tabernacle operates at a time. And in all of this irresponsible prattle R. G. Jolly was very profuse in his accusation that we falsely claim our harmony with Brother Johnson; whereas, he claims he is the one who is adhering to the Epiphany Messenger's conclusions! It seems unbelievable that those people who were schooled in the sober teachings of the last “Principal Man” could now swallow such “Strong delusion”; but we should “think it not strange,” because the Epiphany is the time for “making manifest the counsels of hearts”; and we would be foolish indeed to believe this same “manifestation'' must not occur with those in the LHMM. “The mills of the Gods grind slow, but they grind exceeding fine!”

YOUTHFUL WORTHIES AND CONSECRATED CAMPERS – THE BOOK OF LIFE

There was also the Question: Do the Youthful Worthies and the Consecrated Epiphany Campers begin to inscribe their names in the Book of Life at their consecration in this life? To this R. G. Jolly answered, Yes – for both classes – and gave quite some elaborate “proof.” Well, here is Brother Johnson's dis-proof of R.  G. Jolly in answer to what is meant by names being written in the Book of Life:

“Sometimes it may refer to one's office activities in God's arranged plan... but the usual meaning is that of one's character being inscribed into a covenant. By this we mean developed a character in harmony with a covenant, thus enabling us to become a partaker of the covenant's promises. During the Gospel Age, every consecrated and Spirit-begotten one (except the 12 Apostles, who, before Pentecost, Luke 10:20, because of their pre-anointing were treated in the same way as the Spirit-begotten) at the time of his entrance into the High Calling began to inscribe his character into the Covenant in its Sarah features, which develop the Christ class. Some failed to continue this work, through allowing sin, error, selfishness and worldliness to interfere to such an extent that they fell into the Great Company. Thus they were blotted out of their places as Little Flock members. If unfaithful as Great Company members, they will be blotted out of their places as such, and out of existence entirely, i.e., go into the Second Death; but if faithful as Great Company members, they will inscribe their characters into those features of the Covenant typed by Rachel. The Ancient Worthies begin and Youthful Worthies also at consecration begin to inscribe their characters into the earthly features of the Oath-bound phase. If faithful, they will have their names written in heaven (Heb. 12:23) at the beginning of the Little Season, for they are among the antitypical Millennial-Age first born (Levites) who had no inheritance in the land.... Thus all the elect classes will ultimately have their characters inscribed into the all embracing Abrahamic Covenant in one or another of its features. In the Millennium, the non-elect, the Restitution class, will have to develop their characters in harmony with the NEW BOOK OF LIFE, the New Covenant revelations, which will then be given. As they progress up the highway of holiness, they will be symbolically writing their names in this OTHER Book of Life – inscribing their characters into the New Covenant.”

The foregoing is certainly in harmony with God's character, with itself, and with all Scripture; and R. G. Jolly's answer regarding his Campers Consecrated is in harmony with his “strong delusions” (pseudo-spiritually inspired). It will enable us better to understand the Epiphany Messenger's answer if we remember that the Little Flock is developed by Antitypical Sarah – the Little Flock and Great Company are comprehended in the Rachel type – the Little Flock, Great Company and Youthful Worthies are embraced in the Hannah type (See E-13:19/11). The clear explanation of these various features of the respective types and antitypes offer not the slightest hint that any restitution class is included in them – be they supposedly consecrated now, or after the Mediatorial reign begins. And R. G. Jolly's inclusion of such in a Book of Life, which is not yet opened to any Restitutionist, is simply more of his nonsense (similar to the Jehovah's Witnesses frantic 'gathering' of their specialized brand of non-elect).

There were other questions, which we may treat in later papers, the answers to which were grossly perverted by R. G. Jolly. And throughout his parade of error there was interwoven his usual diatribe against the “sifters” in our midst – in exact fashion as was done by the “cleansed” Jews with Jesus in their Temple gatherings. But perhaps most tragic of all was to note the smiles of approval for his nefarious course by those in the audience who should know better – a precise duplication of the conduct against Brother Johnson early in the Epiphany. The chief priests, Scribes et al, falsely accused our Lord as they crucified him, while the ledlings were ''wagging their heads.” (See Mark. 15:29, 31) And as we observe the cup of “strong delusion” now being drained by those people who treated Brother Johnson and others so shamefully, it should cause no surprise that the same portion is also sent by the Lord to similar persons today; and we may be certain this will continue to a completion. “Because they poured out the blood of saints and of prophets, thou gavest unto them also blood (error) to drink; they deserve it.” (Rev. 16:6, Dia.) However, we are strongly moved to issue a caution to our own readers that we “be not overcome of evil,” lest the same poisonous draft be meted out to us. Brethren, “Keep yourselves in the love of God”; and we keep ourselves in the love of God so long as we keep “the love of God” in us.

If there be any who think others may be retrieved from “the snare of the fowler” by this paper, they need only request additional copies – which will be sent free; or give us names and addresses, and we shall mail from here.

“Now, thanks be to that God, who always leads us forth to triumph with the Anointed one, and who diffuses by us the fragrance of the knowledge of him, in Every Place. Because we are a Sweet odor of Christ to God, among those who are being saved, and among those who are perishing; to these, indeed, an Odor of Death to Death, and to those, and odor of Life to Life; and for these things who is qualified? For we are not like the many, trafficking the Word of God; but really from sincerity, and as from God, in the presence of God, we speak concerning Christ.” (2 Cor. 2:14-17, Dia.)

A CLARIFICATION

In our June paper No. 120, p. 8, we faulted J. W. Krewson for giving erroneous information regarding Christendom's Easter date; and one of his adherents wrote us a rather pointed note to the effect that we were in bad taste in our June comments because J. W. Krewson was simply quoting Brother Johnson, and she felt we should offer public apology for our offense. However, Brother Johnson's statement in the 1940 Present Truth is substantially identical to Brother Russell's comment in Parousia Volume Six, p. 480, which we quote in part: “The method of calculating the date for Good Friday and Easter Sunday in vogue among Lutherans, Episcopalians and Catholics differs from the foregoing in this: They usually, but not always, e.g., this year, celebrate as Easter Sunday the first Sunday following the first full moon after the Spring equinox, and the preceding Friday is recognized as Good Friday.” The following letter is our answer to her, as well as our statement for all our readers:

Dear Sister -------. Grace and peace through our Beloved Lord!

Referring to your recent letter in answer to mine of August 30, I think J. W. Krewson would be well advised to declare when he is quoting Brother Johnson – instead of copying from either Messenger as though it were from his own pen as it seems he is now following once more in the steps of R. G. Jolly. In the present instance, however, it has rebounded to his decided disadvantage.

Anyway, we have before us two statements: One from Brother Russell in Parousia Volume Six, p. 480, and one from Brother Johnson in Present Truth 1935, p. 35, col. 1 – one of which is right, and one of which is wrong. Is there any doubt whatever in your mind which one is right? If there is, you may find in any public library that Brother Russell's statement is the correct one. Brother Johnson knew this, too, as he read Volume Six; and he probably had been well-schooled on this point in his seminary education at Columbus, Ohio. Therefore, I must conclude – and I hope you will agree with me – that his 1935 statement was just a slip of the pen, a mistake he would readily have acknowledged had it been brought to his attention. In fact, my conclusion is verified by Brother Johnson himself on p. 35 of the March 1940 Present Truth, where he gives the answer much the same as Brother Russell gives it in Parousia Vol. 6, p.480.

So here we have a man (J. W. Krewson) claiming to be a teacher in the General Church, who has before him a correct statement and an incorrect statement – the incorrect statement later corrected by Brother Johnson himself; and of those three statements he chooses to publish the incorrect one for the information of his readers. Honestly now, my dear Sister, don't you think, under the circumstances, he is justly deserving of criticism? And don't you think I would be lax in my own obligations if I said nothing about such a distortion? I'm inclined to think he had you believing he was right until I informed you it was wrong. His statement is self-evident nonsense, regardless of where he got it, as his rule would make it impossible for Easter ever to come in March. Therefore, even had he said he was quoting Brother Johnson, I would still feel obligated to state the truth on it – for the benefit of my own readers, as well as for those of his adherents who read our papers.

Our November paper is already complete and has been forwarded to you and mother; but I shall endeavor to clarify what I have published by reproducing this letter, with terse comment in our December paper. Our December paper will not go to the printer for a few weeks yet, which will give you time to answer further if you wish.

While I am grateful to you for bringing this to my attention, I am sorry if it has disturbed you; and I hope you will believe that I have only your elective-salvation welfare at heart when I send you my papers as I do.

Sister Hoefle and the others here join me in sending you and Mother our Christian love, with the assurance of our prayers that you may “know the Truth” and the freedom that is sure to come with it.

Sincerely your brother, John J. Hoefle

LETTERS OF GENERAL INTEREST

Dear Brother Hoefle:

I received your letter of Sept. 1 entitled, “Ten Years in Retrospect” – also the July 1 letter (The Roman Church and Its Little Twin). I read them, I feel, with profit. You and I see the Truth very much “eye to eye” – and that is to follow closely to what Brother Russell taught us concerning “God's Plan of the Ages.” I feel the doctrines he taught are Scriptural and true..... He thought Armageddon would be over in 1914, rather than just beginning............

I assume you think I am one of the Jehovah's Witnesses. For a time I tried to go along with them.... but in Jan. 1917 Brother ------- and I went to the annual meeting of the Watch Tower in Pittsburgh... Brother and I felt Bro. Rutherford was the best suited to take over – and we voted for him. I tried to go along with them for a time, but became so thoroughly disgusted with the way Bro. Rutherford advertised himself, rather than the Truth, that I fell away and associated with no one until Bro. Knorr took over. I like his attitude much better. When I married I began associating with them again. I still believed the Truth, however, and had to tell them the Truth. This got me into trouble..... I told them I would keep still in their meetings (Prov. 6:16-19), but not outside. That is the way we stand today.

I love those Witnesses. Their zeal and earnestness sometime make me feel ashamed of myself. But they are blind, being led by blind leaders..... When we talk, to the average Jehovah's Witness we learn how little they know concerning the deep things of the Scriptures. (Note: We find they know very little about their own errors when faced with themJJH)

The Society brethren believe they are going through Armageddon and will be the nucleus of Christ's visible government here on earth. How foolish such an idea! And they think they will have to teach the Ancient Worthies their brand of present truth! Oh, how could they get so far astray from God's way – when it is made so plain in His Word? They reject the Ransom..... They reject the Resurrection and Restitution, disbelieving that the “Father judgeth no man,” but has put all judgment in the hands of His son Jesus Christ. They teach that God has been judging every individual that came into the world since Adam, and will resurrect and give life to only such as are in the “Memorial tombs.” (Note: These are some of the teachings many of the Jehovah's Witnesses deny – when faced with these errors. One Sister – who came into the Truth under Brother Russell – denied that the Jehovah's Witnesses teach these doctrinesJJH)

Now the question is – if Jehovah is using these Witnesses to do this work, why are they kept in such a measure of ignorance?......

I have been rambling on here at considerable length, and no doubt, you are getting tired.... I located in..... in 1954 when I retired, because they had a class already established here. After working with them for two or three years, I began to see that their doctrines were dishonoring my Father. It had been about 40 years since I had studied the “Scripture Studies.” But I still had the Truth in my mind. I was in a quandary. I felt the Society was the Channel the Lord was using, and yet they were so woefully wrong in their views – so far from the Truth taught us by Brother Russell. I began praying to Jehovah to give me the Truth – His Truth – right from His Word. Almost every night on my knees I pleaded with Jehovah to give me His Truth from His Book.... All this time I was reading and studying the Scriptures. The result is some of the things I have been telling you about. I began to feel elated, sort of patting myself on the back. Some of these things I didn't recall seeing in Brother Russell's writings. Then when I began checking with Brother Russell to see if he had these ideas, my ego surely dropped. He had all these things in print when I was in knee britches. I was glad, for I knew then Jehovah had answered my prayers. (When we seek the Lord in His appointed channels He will answer all who seek him in sincerity of purpose – from a pure heartJJH)

And now, Brother, may the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, richly bless you and yours, and all in your house, as you strive to do His will.

Sincerely your brother and sister in Christ ------- (FLORIDA)

Dear Brother Hoefle: Loving greetings in our Redeemer's Name!

Thank you so very much for the lovely birthday greetings, which was forwarded to me... I do appreciate your remembering me. Now I am fairly sure I wrote you telling you I planned to come here Sept. 10, but there was so much confusion I am not sure. It may have been after I found out about this trip, so I may be just repeating what I have told you. August 27 N's Uncle ------- 91 years old, died. The same day J's mother (86 years old) died........

I think I told you I have been so happy to have my bound ‘Hoefle’ papers and was re-reading them. Got up to about half-way in the 1960 articles...... so I hope to continue reading them.

With much Christian love to both of you and to all the family, I am

NO. 125: WISDOM - MADNESS - FOLLY

by Epiphany Bible Students

No. 125

My dear Brethren: – Grace and peace through our Beloved Master!

Says Solomon in Ecc. 1:17,18: “I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived.... that in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.” But the Wise Man observes also in Ecc. 7:3 – “Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.” Surely, all God's Fully Faithful people will be In accord with the conclusion that by which “the heart is made better” is to be desired, for “out of the heart are the issues of life.” Solomon's wisdom is legend and truth with a large portion of the human race, whatever may be their religious beliefs or disbeliefs. As Solomon realized he was King in Israel after the death of his father David, the enormity of his task had a very mollifying effect upon him – as was also true of the Epiphany Solomon after the death of his spiritual father (That Servant). The thought never once seized Brother Johnson that he should be 'king In Israel' after 1916 – just the reverse of others of much less ability who were ambitious to be “somebody” in the Lord's Household. This is beautifully outlined in 1 Kgs. 3:7, 9, 10, 12, “I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in.... Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad.... And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. And God said unto him.... Behold, I have done according to thy words: Lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.” And further in 1 Kgs. 4:29-31, “God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart.... And Solomon's wisdom exceeded the wisdom of all the children of the east country, and all the wisdom of Egypt. For he was wiser than all men.”

On one occasion we quoted this Scripture to Brother Johnson, asking how this could be true, since he freely admitted that Brother Russell had a position much superior to his own here in the end of the Age. His answer: I have the knowledge and understanding of God's word that he had, plus what I now have; and that makes more than he had.

It is well stated that “Genius speaks only to genius.” St. Paul expresses a kindred thought in 1 Cor. 2:11-16 (Dia.): “Who of men knows the thoughts of the man, except that spirit of the man which is in him.... We have received that spirit which is from God, that we may know the things graciously given to us by God.... Now an animal man does not receive the things of the spirit of God, for they are foolishness unto him; and he is not able to understand, because they are spiritually examined.” Thus, our approach to God or to understanding the genius of man is calculated entirely upon our own ability to reach a viewpoint on the same level with such genius. Therefore, a lawyer sees eye to eye with another lawyer of the same caliber, a doctor of medicine to another physician, and so on. And, by the same token, the more we acquire of the Spirit of the Lord, the more shall we know the “mind of the Lord.,”

Physically speaking, the human race is divided Into three classes – the magnetics, the repulsives, and the neutrals. In the Bible the human face is often used to portray the quality of love; and, even In man's fallen condition, seldom do we find a human face that is repulsive to our vision. Consequently, there is only a small minority of repulsives – just as there is also only a small portion of magnetics; the vast majority are found among the neutrals. Also, the vast majority of human beings must receive their entertainment and relaxation outside themselves, which accounts for the great demand for actors and artists of various sorts. A few, however, are able to draw their pleasures from within themselves, and such people are never alone. Jesus was one of these, and to His disciples He had said, “I have meat to eat that ye know not of.” (John 4:32) He had that strong reassurance, that inner rest, calm and fortitude which were always His ''meat and drink,''

Of course, with almost every human being there is some brilliant experience – perhaps vague and passing quickly, interspersed with the great expanse of woe that clings as a blanket in this “valley of the shadow” – that brings some few heights of joy to ease the broad and persistent depths of sorrow. From such experience is spun the web of character which flows from the active loom of life, and which will be fine and beautiful, or coarse and homely, according to the skill, carefulness and fineness with which the Individual weaves his “garments of needlework” into a final destiny. It has been well spoken that if we sow a thought, we reap a word; if we sow a word, we reap a sentence; if we sow a sentence, we reap a habit; if we sow a habit, we reap a destiny. This makes clear why St. Paul ever sought to have God's people cultivate right habits of thought – “whatsoever things are true, honest, just, pure, lovely and of good report think on these things.” Such thinking is certain to determine our destiny. “I have set the Lord always before me; because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved.” And any who come into God's Household and faithfully seek to “be transformed” by His Word, Spirit and Providence, develop a firmness of character and brightness of countenance that they otherwise did not have – whatever their classification and position, according to this world's standards, in life may have been.

''The whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together,” nor should God's people be foolish enough to think it shall not come nigh unto them. Even our Beloved Lord “learned obedience by the things which He suffered”; and “as He was, so are we in this world.” Few people can stand adversity, and fewer still can receive prosperity and still maintain an even keel. one shopkeeper put the sign In his window, “Hats enlarged to fit any promotion”; and it is little wonder that Solomon was forced to conclude that ''vanity, vanity, all Is vanity.” “What is that In thine hand?” the Lord had said to Moses; and this query comes with equal force to each in his own place, for “it is required of stewards that a man be found faithful.” The vast majority strive and strain for the pelf that perisheth, but which they think will permit them to say, “Soul, take thy ease,” as had been true of the inhabitants of Sodom, where “pride, fullness of bread, and abundance of idleness was found in her”; but to all who regard the things of time as transient and elusive, the following verse will find acceptable lodging:

When fortune smiles, and full of mirth and pleasure

The days are flitting by without a care,

Lest you should be content with only earthly treasure,

Let these few words their fullest import bear:

This, too, will pass away!

It is a common expression, “You can't take it with you”; and, while this may be true of what we have in perishing things of clay, it is certainly not true of what we are in excellency of character. This latter none can take from us, nor does God ever forget it, as evidence Isa. 49:15,16, ''Can a woman forget her suckling child? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee. Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.” Thus, riches may vanish, health may fail, friends forsake, and enemies take up reproach and revile us – yea, even “brethren cast you out” – despair and despondency may come in like a flood (''reproaches have broken my heart”), yet full victory is assured to those who keep up the ''good fight''; the promise is theirs, ''Ye shall reap if ye faint not.” It is aptly stated that we may never have full appreciation of good food until we have been ravenously hungry, nor enjoy the cool refreshing waters of the hidden spring until we have first crossed the desert. one philosopher once intentionally forced himself to go without water for three full days in high summer that he might experience the gripping joy and satisfaction of assuaging such a thirst. (Please consider we do not advise any of our readers to pursue a like experiment; we are certain to have a sufficiency of tribulation to tax the strength of the least unto the greatest even as we do our best to travel life's pathway in even stride. “In the world you shall have tribulation.”)

In the midst of the cares, perplexities and difficulties, from “fightings without and fears within,” we may find solace in the example of Job, ''Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him.” (Job. 13:15) God's Fully Faithful people may rest in the sublime words of St. Paul (1 Cor. 10:13), “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able (to bear); but will with the temptation also make a way to escape.” Therefore, if we break a leg, let us remember that thousands of others “without God and without hope in the world” also have broken legs; if we suffer the loss of loved ones, “we sorrow not, even as others which have no (substantial) hope” (1 Thes. 4:13), and who also mourn the loss of those dear to them. “Behold, I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction” (Isa. 48:10); but the arm of flesh has its limitations in ourselves and in others, nor will weak man ever be permitted to stay God's great purposes – in His people as individuals, or in His great eternal purpose for humanity as a whole. “When He giveth quietness, who then can make trouble?” Those who have never served as a “good soldier” under the Great Captain can know nothing of such consolations. Such “good soldiers” may appear to men to be solitary sentinels on the isolated outposts of the “good warfare” for Truth, but each may rest secure that he is never alone – “Lo, I am with you all the days, even to the end of the Age.” And the years of experience, if properly applied, enable one and all to “endure hardness as a good soldier,” even as St. Paul gave eloquent testimony of the refining and enduring effects of his own faithfulness as a “good soldier,” “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing.” (2 Tim. 4:7,8)

Mankind in general does much too little thinking. Even here in the United States, where the burden of the curse has been eased so very much during the past fifty years, there is a large segment of the population that works eight hours a day, sleeps eight hours a day, eats and drinks and is entertained in some insipid form for eight hours a day – and they think the rest of the time! However, there are those who do think, and think very straight and clearly; as Shakespeare put into the mouth of one of his characters, ''Yon Cassius thinks too much; such men are dangerous!” And, while schemes dark and sundry may emanate from those whose thoughts are evil, yet there can never be too much of thinking on the better things – those things St, Paul gives in his epistle to the Philippians. Much of the thinking of human beings has been based upon unsound premises, such as the old Roman philosophy, “Without slaves there can be no leisure; without leisure there can be no thinking; and without thinking there can be no progress.” All the more enlightened nations have long since discarded that doctrine.

“Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh,” and good listeners often gain quick and sure insight into the hearts of those they meet just by allowing them to talk. “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he”; and the thoughts of the heart are certain to reveal themselves in one form or another, because “A man's wisdom maketh his face to shine, and changeth the strength of his countenance.” Thus, a wise and good man will be motivated by just and good thoughts – which will cause him to speak and act justly, nobly; “the wisdom which cometh from above is without partiality and without hypocrisy.” This is the grand ideal, of course, which no member of the fallen race can achieve in perfection; but the appeal on every hand to “think” offers eloquent testimony to the rating that the better-born among men give. to it. It is said that the one and all-gripping slogan of John D. Rockefeller was, “I am bound to be rich”; and rich he became – perhaps the world's first billionaire. But those who labor for “the wisdom from above” also acquire a wealth which the world cannot know, neither can it take away; whereas, “the meat that perisheth” is so often only too quickly dissipated. It is a proper observation that “distance lends enchantment,” and that the pasture in other fields always appears to be greenest; yet it is also a solid truth that “familiarity breeds contempt.”

Perhaps the most tragic example in all history of this sage expression is to be found in Jesus' own family and the locale in which he grew to manhood. It was in Nazareth that His boyhood acquaintances had contemptuously said of Him, “Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? And they were offended because of Him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honor, but in his own country, and among His own kin, and in his own house. And he could do there no mighty work... And he marveled because of their unbelief.” (Mark 6:1-6) There is no record that any of Jesus' brothers and sisters accepted Him when He was here; and at the cross there is the pathetic spectacle of Jesus resigning His mother to “that disciple whom Jesus loved” (the Apostle John), rather than to one of her own sons. We have often pondered, What will His brothers and sisters think of themselves when they experience the “common salvation,” and realize that they then stand in life because of the one they knew so well that they would have no part of Him during His ministry of sorrow!

But the appeal to all who have accepted Him is that they be “transformed by the renewing of their minds” that they may know what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God. (Rom. 12:2) Nor shall we succeed in this “transformation” except by “thinking on these things”; therefore, it is well that we “give our hearts to know wisdom” – the wisdom which is first pure, then peaceable, etc. And this appeal to all God's people to “get understanding” enables them to “know the Truth, and the Truth shall make you free.” This is just the reverse of all heathen and of all false Christian religions, which instruct their adherents to allow their priests to think for them on matters religious; otherwise, they may become confused. This is especially true of the Roman Catholic system, which forbids its devotees to read the Bible for themselves, or to read any literature not accepted by the board of censors – as is also true of its “Little Twin” (the Jehovah's Witnesses). This same attitude was followed by the Society after Brother Russell's death, just as it has been advocated by some since Brother Johnson's death. Brother Johnson gives this in E-3:311 – “J.F.R. sought to prevent the Societyites from partaking of the spiritual feast offered.... Personally, by letter and by instructions to his pilgrims he not only counseled against reading that and other teachings that appeared in The Present Truth, but he specifically told his adherents, some of whom were burning the copies of The Present Truth that were being sent to them, not to burn them, but to send the papers back to the publisher unopened, with the word “refused” written on the wrapper.... and thus he sought to prevent their getting any more copies of this journal.” This same advice has been given by R. G. Jolly regarding our publications, and we have received some of the same kind of “refusals” written on the wrapper from his sectarian devotees. We should “think it not strange,” when such errorists follow in the footsteps of their predecessors in error. Such bigotry should sound an immediate warning to all who have been enlightened in even slight degree by Present Truth. Of the Roman system it has been aptly observed that their slogan is, “Reading (other than Catholic literature) is doubt; doubt is heresy; and heresy is Hell.” It was indeed reading of the Bible that made of Martin Luther a ‘heretic’; had he not read, he would have remained a loyal “believer,” a cringing serf of the Roman system.

And, while thinking of the right sort is advocated throughout the Holy Writ, we should ever consider that thinking of the wrong sort can quickly lead to the morass of confusion which is to be found In so many quarters. The words of Jesus are so very pertinent here, “Wisdom is justified of all her children.” Thus, the Roman Church correctly teaches that there is but one true Church, which is the custodian and steward of the Truth. This Truth none can deny; but they then proceed with the next step – We are that true Church. All who accept this second premise are then easily led captive to the enslaving precepts of the system. By the same token, if one is falsely labeled a ‘sifter,’ those who believe the falsehood would then easily be deterred from investigating that person's teachings. But we are admonished to “stand fast in that liberty wherewith Christ hath made you free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.” However, even while advocating the fullest freedom in God's Household, there is also that restraining precept, “Ye were called unto liberty, only use not liberty as an occasion to the flesh.” Thus, “all things are lawful, but all things are not expedient.”

We are told to “prove all things, and hold fast that which is good.” However, if this text be not read with sanctified reason, it may be badly misleading. It is not possible for any of us to prove all things; but it is possible – and proper to prove all things we accept that pertain to religious truth; otherwise, it would not be possible for us ever to “know the Truth.” As the Bereans of old “searched the Scriptures daily to see if those things taught to them were true,” so should we also; and this alone will make us “rooted and grounded in the faith as ye have been taught,” a burning and a shining light. All such, who ''hunger and thirst after righteousness (the Truth and the spirit of the Truth) shall be filled.”

Therefore, let all consider that ''wisdom is the principal thing; therefore, get wisdom; and with all thy getting, get understanding.” Such is our prayer for all our readers.

Sincerely your brother,

John J. Hoefle, Pilgrim

QUESTIONS OF GENERAL INTEREST

Question: – Do the quasi-elect have the “peace of God”?

Answer: – No – only the sanctified have the “peace of God.” The peace of God is only for the elect in this Faith Age. So long as the quasi-elect retain their duty-love to God and Man, that they attained in the Court, they will retain the “Peace with God” that is their portion in making this most important first step. God gives His peace – “the peace of God” – only to those who have a justifying and sacrificing faith, the faith required for those who walk a narrow way – the elect during the reign of sin and evil, which is a step farther than Justification; and only the elect (the Little Flock, the Ancient and Youthful Worthies, and the Great Company when cleansed) are blessed with this peace during the Gospel Age. Brother Johnson has a splendid article on this subject In the November 1944 Present Truth.

................................................................................

Question: – When the Great Company are In Azazel's clutches, do they have “peace with God” and the “Peace of God”?

Answer: – No, they do not! They violate both their Justification and Sanctification vows – some more and some less. In proportion as they have violated their vows, in that same proportion they lose their “peace with God” and the “Peace of God.” The Lord does not uphold their evils of teaching and practice, which they get from Azazel – nor does He grant them victory In controversy. This is so very clearly revealed in the course of King Saul in 1 Sam. in chapters 13 through 31. Only the Fully Faithful are able to put all their adversaries to flight. “I will give you eloquence and wisdom, which all your opponents will not be able to gainsay, or resist” (Luke 21:15, Dia.), is one of the exceeding great and precious promises reserved only for the Fully Faithful. Note especially the Berean Comments on this Scripture. Azazel doesn't uphold them either; he doesn't mind how much they are humiliated and defeated because of the errors he has given them. He doesn't love them; he wishes to destroy them. But the Lord loves them so long as they remain In the Household, even though He doesn't spare “the rod of affliction.” The rod of affliction is no comfort to them, but rather humiliating and unappreciated. But the rod – either to correct, or refine, whichever the case may be – to the Fully Faithful is a rod of comfort to them, because they want the Lord's correction; they want to develop a character ''mete for the Master's use.” (See Psalms 23:4)

Not so with the Great Company so long as they are doubleminded: Their fleshly mind desires to do things in accordance with their will and way. Until such time as they become single-minded, this same condition will exist in them; but when they have had enough and “cry unto the Lord” in their distresses (Psa. 107:13), He will deliver them. R. G. Jolly touched on this Psalm (vs. 22-28) as applicable to the world, at the Philadelphia Convention, but he didn't refer to verse 13, a specific text that applies to his Class. We are living in the Epiphany period when persons, principles and things are being made manifest. The Great Company either as a Class, or as Individuals in their leaders (in the Little Babylon groups as well as in Big Babylon) have not reached this point yet – they have not “cried unto the Lord” to deliver them from their bondage of error (although those Individuals – cleansed as such all during the Age have had their proper buffeting and no doubt “cried unto the Lord.” – We refer specifically to the leaders and Class cleansing): rather they have persisted in their revolutionism even after they have been clearly refuted by the Lord's faithful Star Members' teachings. They are still sitting “in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron” (Psa. 107:10). When the prophecy is fulfilled – “mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all” (Rev. 18:21), then the “great multitude” will cry unto the Lord for their deliverance.

LETTERS OF GENERAL INTEREST

Dear Brother Hoefle: Loving greetings In our Precious Redeemer's Name!

Your kind letter with the tracts enclosed received some time ago – and thank you very much. Of course I appreciate them very much – because they are a Part of the precious Harvest Sickle, and part of the Fifth Volume of Studies in the Scriptures. We used to put them out a few years back, especially “Where are the Dead.”

I never met Brother ------- you mention, but I have heard of him. I do not know what became of him – whether he stayed with the Society or where he is. Here are the names and addresses of some members of our class for your mailing list; I do not have all their home addresses.

May the dear Lord continue to bless and keep you – and all the dear brethren with you in the Narrow way. This is my sincere prayer for all of you.

Your Brother by His Grace In His Service ------- (NEW YORK)

.......................................................................

My dear Brother Hoefle: Greetings In the Master's name!

Yours of July 19 came to hand quite safe and was received with much appreciation and thanks. Thanks also for the August and September papers and the tracts....... I really enjoyed the August paper – agree that it is the crownlost leaders and their supporters that built up Great and Little Babylon; and it is their errors that are at the bottom of every sifting – error of teaching and practice, even up to this day of the Epiphany. I also note what you say about priestcraft and priest'graft.' These are the doubleminded ones who try every conceivable means to gain numbers and material gains, as you make reference to J. F. Rutherford and his slave labor – and at the same time claiming to be strictly adhering to Pastor Russell, or in the case of the Epiphany brethren, claiming to adhere to both Pastor Russell and Pastor Johnson.

I also enjoyed the September paper – Ten Years in Retrospect. It is indeed enlightening and encouraging. Question of General Interest of the No. 123, I think with one stoke of the pen you have wiped off the “strange fire” of Campers Consecrated and quasi-elect Consecrated. I only hope their advocates would read that number and take note of all the references you make pointing to Brother Johnson's writings to the contrary of these false teachings.....

All the dear friends are in good spirit, thank the Lord, and ask to tender their love to you and Sister Hoefle and to the dear ones with you – as well as to those with whom you come in contact. And so comes our prayers on your behalf as we also solicit yours. To the All-Wise God, be glory through Jesus Christ forever! Amen. (Rom. 16:27)

Your brother by His Grace, ------- (TRINIDAD)

Dear Brother Hoefle: Grace and peace through our Blessed Lord and Master!

It is a pleasure to write you, as much blessings are received in your response. I must acknowledge the receipt of ... lbs. from Brother ------- May the dear Lord bless him for his labor of love! We wish we could all say more and do more at times for the Lord. He is so gracious toward us!

The monthly articles are so interesting and add strength to the faithful at this dire time of need. In your September article – Ten Years In Retrospect – you stated you were hopeful R. G. Jolly would have recovered.... But if I understand aright I see him.... acting very daring in his wayward course. I have read and noticed how Brother Johnson dealt very kindly and justly toward those who opposed the Truth In his times – very much as you have been trying to do toward those of our times. But will they take heed? Oh, when the light in one become darkness, how great is that darkness! (Matt. 6:23)

May God continue to bless you as you strive to serve Him faithfully. With this comes my warm Christian love for you, Sister Hoefle and the dear ones with you.

Sincerely your brother ------- (JAMAICA)

My dear Brother Hoefle: Grace and peace be multiplied!

I must thank you for your kind letter to me, and to know I have been in your thoughts and your prayers... These have brought much consolation to me at this time. I can assure you, my dear Brother, that my present experiences have enabled me to live closer to my Lord and Redeemer (Psalms 119:67); and I do rejoice in His promises that all things must work together for my good, and to them that love God – the called according to His purpose (Rom. 8:28)

May the Lord Jesus Christ and our dear Heavenly Father continue to bless and keep you in His love while you continue to abide faithful in His service. Continue to pray for me, as I cease not to make mention of you in my prayers, Love to the dear sisters and other brethren with you.

Your sister in the Lord, ------- (TRINIDAD)
