NO. 198: THE ENDING OF THE EPIPHANY PERIOD

by Epiphany Bible Students

No. 198

On pp. 61-63 of the July-August Present Truth, R. G. Jolly treats of the above in a Question of General Interest; and in his statements he engages in quite some harangue and vituperation against us for exposing his errors on the subject. He accuses us of contradicting Brother Johnson, although he himself is the one directly guilty of doing just that. Of course, such a course of power-grasping and falsifying leaders is nothing new. The Jewish priesthood accused Jesus and the Apostles of doing the very things they themselves were doing; the Man of Sin accused Martin Luther and other faithful reformers in like manner; and That Evil Servant accused in similar fashion those who left him. All who are familiar with events among Truth people after 1917 know that JFR accused those who forsook him of being That Evil Servant, of causing divisions among the brethren, etc.; yet these things were all properly placed at his own doorstep. Therefore, it should occasion no great surprise to see history now repeating itself; in fact, we should be surprised if it did not occur during this last special period of the Gospel Age, when persons, principles and things are being manifested in all quarters.

To offer refutation of the diatribe in this Present Truth we now quote parts from E-4:53-56:

“The people eating, drinking, etc., during the Parousia before the outbreak of the great tribulation; were in their activities likened to the people in the ‘period before the flood in their activities; and the people during the great tribulation are likened in their overwhelming to the people being destroyed during the flood. For these two sets of two activities the expression ‘the days’ is used in Luke 17:26, 27, while in v. 30 the expression ‘day,’ and not ‘days,’ is used to represent the period of the great tribulation. Since according to vs. 26 and 27 the expression, ‘the days of the San of Man,’ is limited to the two periods – the one just before the trouble and the trouble period itself – we conclude that this expression refers to two and only two periods. Since v. 30 refers to the second of these as a day, but such a day as the faithful would not especially desire, because of its sufferings; since v. 22 refers to a day of the Son of Man’s days especially desirable to the Church; since the Parousia as the day of His coming has always been desired by the Church; and since no other than these two days are mentioned in the connection, we conclude from these facts as a second reason, that the expression ‘the days of the San of Man’ refers to two and only two periods....

“The expression, The Time of Trouble, Is used in two senses. In its wide sense it covers the period from 1874 until the end of Anarchy and of Jacob’s trouble. In its narrow sense it covers the period from the beginning of the World War in 1914 until the end of Anarchy and of Jacob’s trouble. It is in the narrow – the second – sense of the term that we use it in our subject. We understand that the special tribulation period and the Epiphany as a period are one and the same thing... The Epiphany and the Time of Trouble are identical...... The World War was in the Epiphany; yea, it was the beginning of the Epiphany.... Matt. 26:64 proves that the Epiphany will progress through Revolution...... The Nominal Church and the powers of spiritual control – will be destroyed in completion during, yea, early, in the Revolution, and hence will be out of existence before the Anarchy... We will now quote and expound passages that prove that the Epiphany will end with Anarchy and Jacob’s Trouble, i.e., will end with the end of the trouble.”

In all the foregoing there isn’t the slightest hint that the Epiphany will end “in its restricted sense” in 1954, or any other time before it ends fully – at the end of the Time of Trouble. Note also the statement that the “narrow sense” is from 1914 to the end of the trouble. Now, “restricted” and “narrow” mean the same thing according to Webster’s dictionary. Why, then, does RGJ inject a word of his own choosing here? Manifestly, it is only for the purpose of hoodwinking his unwary readers. If he had used “narrow sense” as Brother Johnson used in the above quotation, even the least alert among his readers would then recognize that the Epiphany Messenger is giving direct contradiction to RGJ’s present contention. Well, let those be hoodwinked by this uncleansed Levite who want it that way. As for us, and our house, we shall “continue in the things we have learned, and been assured of, knowing of whom we have learned them.”

THAT SERVANT’S PRESENTATION

Let us now consider That Servant’s teaching regarding the “times and seasons” of the Second Advent. First, there would come the Parousia (presence) – the small Parousia day; second, the Epiphaneia; and third, the Basileia (Kingdom). All of these are a part of, and run concurrently with the large Parousia Day – the 1000-year-day; but none of them run concurrently with each other; and there is good reason for this. In each of those periods there is a main, though not exclusive, objective. The Parousia was for the purpose of reaping; and that day and that work ended at exactly the same time – September 1914. Immediately then the Epiphany appeared (overlapped by a 25-month period) with a threefold main objective: (1) – “To execute upon them (the kings, nobles and people in general) the judgment written”; (2) – to judge “the quick” (2 Tim. 4:1); and (3) – “devour all the earth with the fire of My jealousy” (Zeph. 3:8) in the Time of Trouble starting in 1914, and continuing to the end of Jacob’s Trouble. As soon as the Epiphany arrived all three of these objectives began to operate: Jordan was smitten in 1914-16 (“bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron”—(Psalms 149:8); the “manifestation” of the “quick” in their various classes began to appear; and “the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come.”

The Basileia will have as its main objective Restitution; and it will appear also as soon as “the word of the Lord goes forth from Jerusalem.” As stated above, there was a 25-month overlapping of the Parousia into the Epiphany; but that did not deter in the least the beginning of the Epiphany work exactly on time. Now RGJ is claiming that his Epiphany and Basileia have been overlapping, running concurrently, since 1954, seventeen years. In proof of his claim, let him point us to just one small item of Restitution work that has been going on since then. On p. 62, col. 1, par. 3, he says this: “God’s faithful had plenty of evidence from Scriptures, reason and facts that the Epiphany’s first lapping into the Basileia period took place in the Fall of 1954.” (let him give us just one fact to prove what he says.) Then he continues: “The evidences that the Epiphany was ending lappingly in 1954 were more numerous for the Lord’s most devoted watchers living at that time than were the evidences that the Gospel Age was ending in 1874, 1878 and 1881 for the Lord’s most devoted watchers living at these pertinent times.” Yes, all those watchers had back there was the parallel dispensations, the days of Daniel, the chronology, and the no-ransom and infidelism siftings! Just think of it, Brethren, and consider the quality of such a statement. It is little wonder that Brother Johnson wrote of RGJ that he “pours out foolish effusions.” (See E-10:591) Yet, right along with such irresponsible statements, this same RGJ declares himself to be the Pastor and Teacher! “Seducers shall vex worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.”(2 Tim. 3:13)

There is a point here well worth noting. Of all the erstwhile Truth people there are only two groups who contend the Basileia (Kingdom) is now with us; namely, the Jehovah’s Witnesses and the Laymen’s Home Missionary Movement. Thus, when RGJ embraces the errors of the Witnesses, he is aligning himself with real select company indeed. And the farther we advance into their kingdom the worse things became in the world. Yet, the true teaching concerning the Kingdom says it will “wipe away all tears.” It seems unbelievable that brethren who were once blessed with the logical and sober teachings of the two Messengers could swallow such drivel; and it simply proves that “they received not the Truth in the love of it, and on this account God will send them an energy of delusion, to their believing the falsehood.” (2 Thes. 2:10,11)

MORE OF RGJ’S PERVERSIONS

On p. 62, col. 1, par. 1, RGJ again repeats his timeworn statement concerning us: “The fallacies and absurdities in the opposing statements made by the errorist who teaches what the Epiphany Messenger termed ‘sophistry’ on Christ’s Thousand-year reign.” However, on p. 36, col. 1, last par., of the May-June Present Truth he is now teaching this same ‘sophistry’ himself; but it seems he’s so befuddled by Azazel that he doesn’t even recognize his own present “fallacy and absurdity.” When these people fall into the clutches of Azazel they talk all sorts of nonsense; and this is just one more sample of it.

Let us recall that, when we first quoted Brother Johnson in E-17, p. 124, on 1 Cor. 15:24 to prove our point, RGJ came up with the flimsy excuse that a “faulty disc” was responsible for presenting an erroneous thought. Now the question is properly in order: Was that “faulty disc” story just another of RGJ’s “misrepresentations” (See E-10:585), or is he now also disputing his own conclusion on 1 Cor. 15:24 in the May-June Present Truth?

Then, an the same page of the July-August Present Truth, col. 2, top, he says this: “We pray for him (JJH, that is) whatever mercy God may be pleased to extend to him.” A few years ago at the Philadelphia Labor Day Convention, he was attempting to inflame his deluded devotees in his “avoid them” policy – to be sure none of them might hear some devastating truth from us – and he made this statement: “You wouldn’t shake hands with the Devil, would you, if you met him on the street?” (Of course, such teaching about disfellowshiped brethren is a direct revolutionism against both Parousia and Epiphany teaching, and is in exact duplication of what the Jehovah’s Witnesses also now teach their dupes. They, too, have deluded their sectarian devotees into believing we are the Devil.) However, now RGJ is telling us that, while he wouldn’t shake hands with the Devil, he is still praying for him! His play on words here is self-evidently rank hypocrisy – and some more of his nonsense. But, then, we have learned by now not to be surprised at anything these “double minded” crown-losers may spout forth. Just talk – “you can fool some of the people all the time!”

As we observe the confused and unclear condition of RGJ’s mind, which prompts him to ridicule his own teachings, we would suggest he would be well advised to do all his praying for himself. Of course, when we recall that he had to take refuge to a psychiatrist in his confusion in 1938, instead of going to the Lord in prayer, we are once more reminded of his empty and insufficient attempts to help himself, or any one else, in his prayer efforts. All this is in exact keeping with Saul going to the Witch of Endor when he could get no response from the Lord. Saul is a type of the Great Company leaders until Armageddon. (See Epiphany Volume 14, p. 5, published in 1949)

THE 1914-1954 PARALLEL

In his confused condition, RGJ continues to stress the 1914-1954 parallel – a parallel which doesn’t ‘parallel’ at all. If he has the Truth here, why doesn’t he make a list of the 1914-1916 events, and give us the similar parallel events in 1954-56? That is the way both Messengers always handled such subjects; but he isn’t doing it because he can’t do it; there are no parallel events in 1954-56. He says we are silent on Scriptures he offers; but not a one of those Scriptures he cites even hints at a 40 year day. The parallel is all he has; and that parallel has produced just nothing. He stresses Luke 17:22,26-30, as Brother Johnson also did; but Brother Johnson clearly states that the Scripture proves the Epiphany is from 1914 to the end of Jacob’s Trouble.

Note E-4:15 (bottom) and p. 16: “A gradual epiphanizing since 1914 will increase and finally come to a climax at the end of the Epiphany (nothing said here about a ‘restricted’ sense—JJH) – the end of the time of trouble.” And further in E-4:51:

“The Epiphany is called a day, notably Luke 17:22-30, and thus proves equal to the Parousia in duration, we infer (emphasis by Brother Johnson) that the Epiphany is a period of forty years.... we think it reasonable to look for the Epiphany to begin to end in 1954 with a probable overlapping of two years and one month into the Basileia Kingdom.”

The small Parousia day came to a complete end in 1916. Yet RGJ now has his Epiphany day continuing right on for seventeen years – with no suggestion for a time of its ending. Yet he insists he has a parallel here! Any one with even a smattering of Present Truth knows the Epiphany did not begin to end in 1954. In fact, it has done just the reverse; it has intensified since that date, as can be seen by the overthrow of the Government in Cuba, the drastic deterioration of the capitalistic system all over the world, the devastating riots in the United States, etc.

RGJ claims the Lord has been dealing with the world since 1954 – when his “Basileia” begins. Can he point to one physical incident to prove that? Or is he once more just using his Grimm’s-Fairy-tale imagination here? The Lord began to deal with the world in a small beginning in 1874, when the Time of Trouble in its wide sense began. He dealt with the world in a much more pronounced manner in 1914, when the Time of Trouble in its narrow sense began – when also its violent features became apparent to all the watchers. Also, all the saints came into Present Truth within about 18 months after September 1914. Is there the slightest reason whatever to believe all the Great Company came into Present Truth in 18 months after September 1954?

When Brother Johnson died in 1950, RGJ was ready enough to declare that his expected stay with us until 1956 was based only upon a parallel which did not materialize. And in this he was quite right. But the expectation of Armageddon and Anarchy by 1956 was also based just upon the same parallel, which did not materialize either. All of these things demonstrate very clearly that there was no such parallel then. If there is excuse for one part of the mistake, there is excuse for all of it.

In all of this RGJ is determined to make his “strange fire” (false doctrine) of Campers Consecrated prevail. And as usual when any one “gazes,” he is forced to cast aside all logic and much salient Truth he once embraced. We remind our readers of his 27 mathematical calculations in the January 1947 Present Truth, which ‘proved’ the 1956 parallel; but he was ready enough in 1950 to conclude (without confessing his errors to the brethren, however) that the 1956 parallel he had so minutely produced in 1947 was just no parallel at all; it was pure Jambresian folly! But this did not deter him from again producing other intricate mathematical calculations to ‘disprove’ his previous calculations of three short years ago – and just about three months after the Epiphany Messenger’s demise (when all priestly help and favor was withdrawn from him: he was no longer hindered by such, even as JFR was no longer hindered after That Servant’s death), and to ‘prove’ – or make way – for further manipulations and plans. But self-evidently, he cannot produce further ‘parallels’ for his extended overlapping, anymore than he can produce his ‘parallel’ for 1954-56. Or will he try?

All of us know that Brother Russell made mistakes in forecasting deliverance of the Church, the end of the time of trouble, and the establishment of the Kingdom in Israel in 1914, etc., just as all God’s people have done over the Gospel Age; but, when time itself proved his conclusions wrong, he did not then continue to insist that it did happen, and that he was right. Only the ‘foolish’ would do this – See Matt. 7:24-27, also Epiphany Vol. 5, Chapter 7. Instead, great and humble man that he was, he himself corrected those mistakes even before 1914 – although some of the crown-losers (‘foolish’ brethren) then living (such as A. H. MacMillan) continued to preach the error right up to the Fall of 1914 – in much the same manner as RGJ has been proclaiming 1954. Had Brother Johnson lived to 1954, we may be sure he too, would have corrected his erroneous conclusions and mistakes – just as he corrected the mistake he made re Armageddon in 1934, which he had based upon the spurious ‘earthquake’ of Matt. 27:52-54. (See E-5:358-64)

The Epiphany night that followed the Jewish Harvest has lasted for more than 1800 years, so it had no time relation whatever to the 40-year day of the Jewish Harvest. And any one not befuddled by Azazel would readily recognize that some changes in time and calculation are now necessary for 1954-56 for the parallel that has not paralleled. All those Scriptures cited by RGJ from Brother Johnson’s writings simply prove that the Epiphany and the Time of Trouble are identical – even as That Servant taught also; but not a one of them offers any hint of the duration of the Time of Trouble. The only fact we now have – from the chronology and the signs of the times, etc. – is that it began in 1914. And this is in keeping with what That Servant and the Epiphany Messenger have faithfully taught: prophecies of future dates cannot be fully understood until we are in them, when they are a trial time for the Lord’s people – and many times they cannot be understood until they are finished.

In our paper on The Third Watch we presented the deduction that the first Watch was from 1874 to 1914 (forty years), the second Watch from 1914 to 1954 (forty years), and the third Watch is from 1954 to 1994 (forty years). But on the 1994 date we offered no positive conclusions, although we inferred that Armageddon, Anarchy and Jacob’s Trouble would take place some time in that third watch – just as Brother Johnson offered no positive conclusions on the details of 1954: he, too, “inferred” that Anarchy would be here by 1956, if the parallel worked out for the 40-year Epiphany period; but it didn’t work out – so his ‘inference’ was wrong. Any babe in the Truth should be able to see that. Even others not befuddled by Azazel can see that certain events that were predicted didn’t turn out when time itself makes it clear. And, when RGJ can’t see it, it simply reveals to all of us the confused condition of his mind at present.

Once more we direct attention to the fact that only two groups that originated in the Truth Movement now claim we are in the Basileia, the Kingdom. They are the Witnesses and the Laymen’s Home Missionary Movement. The one difference between them is their time setting. That Evil Servant has his Kingdom beginning in 1914; whereas, RGJ has his Kingdom beginning in 1954 – exactly forty years later. Here indeed is a parallel based upon fact; and any one with a parallel that fits with that Evil Servant’s conclusion should derive great satisfaction in his accomplishment. And with both those ‘Kingdoms’ that are now presented to us the world has become progressively worse – somewhat similar to the counterfeit kingdom of the Papacy – but the Scriptures clearly teach us that the world will become progressively better once the true Kingdom is established.

Let us now take a further look at Luke 17:20-30: Verse 26 says, “As it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of Man.” RGJ offers this again as ‘proof’ that the Parousia and Epiphany days here in the end of the Age would be of equal length, so we inquire – Were the days of Noah of equal length. The days of Noah represent two periods of time, the one “while the ark was preparing,” when the people ate, drank, and were merry; and the second period of time is the one when the rain came “and destroyed them all.” This latter was a period of forty days (symbolic of a trial time); but the former was many times more than forty days. Surely RGJ is not contending that during the 40 years up to 1954 and the seventeen years up to the present has “destroyed them all”! Thus, there is no time relation whatever to the two days. The time that Noah was building the ark, typed the 40-year Gospel Harvest but there is no Scripture to indicate what length of time he was building the ark. Therefore, if the “days of the Son of Man” are of like character, we need expect no time relation here either. RGJ himself admits we are still in the Epiphany day – some fifteen years longer than his Parousia day, even allowing for the 25-month overlapping. Therefore, to contend that these days are parallels in time is self-evident nonsense.

As stated, the first day of Noah, when the ark was being built, was self-evidently many times longer than the second day. The ark was 300 cubits long. If we use the 25” cubit for calculation, that would make the ark 625 feet long; and nobody of sound mind would contend that Noah and his three sons could complete such a structure in 40 days –33 days, because it was ready for occupancy seven days before the rain began to fall. (Gen. 7:7) Although we have nothing definite on how long it did require to build it, it must have been a matter of years, rather than days or months.

The following quotations pose a few questions: “The fallen angels and the new creatures will be judged – separated (Matt. 25:31,32) – during the Epiphany. Scripture, reason and facts prove that during the war (1914-1918) this separation between the new creatures – the Little Flock and the Great Company – began. However, since this is an Epiphany work, according to this passage, the Epiphany was here during the World War; but other Scriptures show that this separation will continue during the Revolution. Probably it will continue until the early part of Anarchy.” (E-4-57) Does RGJ believe this statement, or is this another Epiphany teaching against which he is revolutionizing to make way for his “strange fire” (false doctrine) of Epiphany Consecrated Campers?

Then, further on p. 59: “Col. 3:4, compared with other Scriptures, teaches that the Epiphany and its work are progressive, having in the War their small beginnings, and in the Revolution their growth and development and reaching at the end of Anarchy and of Jacob’s trouble their grand climax.... This climax is so overshadowingly important that our Pastor placed by far the most emphasis upon it when treating of the Epiphany work.” Here again we ask, does RGJ believe what both Messengers taught on the Epiphany? If he does, how can he contend that the Epiphany ended in “a restricted sense” in 1954, when all of this “overshadowingly important Epiphany work” is still future?

Again on p. 65 (63) we are told that during the Epiphany the Lord will be revealed to the Great Company and the Youthful Worthies as their cleanser and deliverer. Has even a good fraction of the Great Company and the Youthful Worthies yet recognized this, or is this still future? And, if it is still future, in what sense has the Epiphany ended in “a restricted sense,” other than RGJ’s “non”-sense?

Let us now inquire into the manner of man who is presently teaching that the Epiphany has ended in “a restricted sense.” He admits he is a crown-loser, a member of the Great Company, ejected from the Holy and the enlightening features of the golden candlestick. And of such there is this to be found in E-4:87:

“They have accepted and spread various false doctrines (such as Jonadabs, Campers Consecrated, justification outside the linen curtain, etc.—JJH). They have developed sectarian systems (ever ready to disfellowship those who will not accept their errors—JJH).... Their course toward the Lord, the Truth and the remainder of the Lord’s people has not been a praiseworthy one. (p. 93, top) Through false teachings they have corrupted the wells of the Truth. (pp. 93-97)... The errors that they cherish leave their hearts cold and weak and their heads confused and deceived.” (p. 94, top)

And of such the Berean Comment on Matt. 25:30, discussing the “unprofitable servant” described above, says they eventually experience “sorrow, disappointment and chagrin in every sense.” And in all of this we wish to have no part whatever!

“For thy loving kindness is before mine eyes: and I have walked in thy truth. I have not sat with vain persons, neither will I go in with dissemblers.... Lord, I have loved the habitation of thy house, and the place where thine honor dwelleth.” (Psalms 26:3,4,8)

Sincerely your brother,

John J. Hoefle, Pilgrim

QUESTION OF GENERAL INTEREST

QUESTION: – Should Brother Jolly be condemned and rebuked for calling you a “sifting” errorist,” etc.?

ANSWER: – He should not be rebuked if he is telling the truth. In fact, if he is telling the truth, then he would be subject to criticism if he did not make such exposure. Both Messengers often attacked sifters, mentioning them by name, telling us it was their duty to do so; and with this thought we ourselves are in complete harmony. It is only by that method that they could “take heed to all the flock” (Acts 20:28), as St. Paul admonished all faithful “overseers” to do.

However, if he is not telling the truth, then he is guilty of gross slander, assassination of character. And, “By this standard every slanderer is a murderer” (1 John 3:15, Berean Comment). And any who aid and abet him in his evil course would become a partaker of his sins. Also, let us not forget that most of the real reformers during the Age, who were “set for the defense of the Gospel,” were vilified and slandered by the real culprits in the controversy. We have only to consider the case of Martin Luther and the Papacy, and That Servant and the renegades of Babylon, to see this matter fully in its real perspective.

The question then properly arises, How shall we know who is the guilty one in such conflicts? The answer comes clearly enough from Isa. 54:17: “No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper.” Martin Luther’s stewardship doctrine was “Justification by faith,” based upon his favorite text, Rom. 5:1; and with it he decimated Papacy’s error of justification by works. The same can be said for That Servant’s encounter with the Goliath of Evolution during the Harvest reaping period. “Thou camest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield; but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of Hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.” (1 Sam. 17:45) Thus, when we see one in conflict suffering one crushing defeat after another, we may safely conclude he is not of that class whose “righteousness is of Me, saith the Lord.” To all those approved of the Lord, the promise is sure: “I will give you eloquence and wisdom, which all your opponents will not be able to gainsay, or resist.” (Luke 21:15, Dia.)

LETTERS OF GENERAL INTEREST

Mr. Evil Slave Class:

Your God Satan certainly has you in mass confusion! It’s pitiful how Satan blinds the eyes of the unbelievers. What are you fussing about? Jehovah God has given you everything you have! God’s people are Jehovah’s Witnesses and I am happy to be among those ones declaring the “good news” of his Kingdom.

Sincerely, ------- (FLORIDA)

Note: As we have mentioned in this article, this is a sample of what the leaders in the Society teach their sectarian devotees – just as the leaders in the LHMM teach their sectarian devotees, as RGJ instructs them that shaking hands with us is like shaking hands with “the Devil.”

Dear Brother Hoefle: Grace and peace in His Word of Truth!

Just received No. 194. It is good – and the truth on God’s Kingdom on earth, which is to the Jew first. I have a new job now.

I went to the British Convention at Hyde. In the praise and testimony meeting I got up and said that I received the Truth in 1919 and got the Six Volumes of Brother Russell at the same time..... Brother Rutherford was President and his ‘light’ from the throne was error – just doing away with the old established Truth. I could see this was wrong – to get the world to consecrate during the Gospel Age – and it is to the Jew first. Brother ------- who was in the Chair, said, That is one side of it and passed on to other brethren to testify. There was Brother ------- from Miami and Bro ------- from Warsaw, Poland there. I gave as much as I could while they let me stand.

Your Ends of the Ages is very good – and the Truth! I will send you some money soon. Let me know where to. I will close with Hymns 23, 300, 298, 272 and 182.

Your brother by His Grace, ------- (ENGLAND)

Dear Brother Hoefle: Grace and peace!

Just to let you know change of address of Sister ------- She had a slight seizure and was in the hospital for two weeks. She is now walking about and much improved. Sister (her sister in the flesh) has undertaken the charge of the house and thinks Sister ------- will be better in her new house.

Brother ------- joins me in love to you and all the dear ones with you. Assuring you of our continued prayers, and thank you for the timely and refreshing monthly papers.

Sincerely ------- (ENGLAND)

Dear Brother Hoefle: Greetings in our Lord’s Name!

It was good to get your letter, and about the Brother that just died. I never hear much news here. I live all alone and those I once knew are all gone. All that come to the door now are young girls. But they are not like the old ones that used to come – they take tracts and say that they will read them.

I told you that as long as you preached the Truth I would stay with you – and I must say I continue to like your writings. They are just wonderful! I think of you often and pray for you in all my prayers – and I am so glad that you are coming to the Convention...... My youngest granddaughter is married now a year – husband’s grandfather was with the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Your sister in the Lord’s great favor, ------- (PENNSYLVANIA)

NO. 197: IN MEMORIAM OF "THAT SERVANT"

by Epiphany Bible Students

No. 197

His memory deserves to be kept fragrant among us; and it can be so kept best of all by a faithful use of the Truth that he ministered to us, and by a loyal copying of his holy example. Let us by the associations of his hallowed memory seek more and more to glorify the Lord. This will make “that Servant” still be fruitful in our lives! “By it he being dead (according to the flesh) yet speaketh!”

Such a course on our part will conduce to his memory being continually blessed to us and to other!, and is the best kind of celebration of his life and death. The anniversary memorial service for him will also conduce to this end, and therefore may well be kept. We suggest that such services consist partly of prayer, praise, and testimony along the line of the benefits derived by us from our Pastor’s ministry, and partly of an address or of several addresses on various phases of his life, work and character. Past experiences have proven the profitableness of such celebrations, and those to be observed will doubtless carry with them the same lesson. May God bless his memory to us through such services!

Will our Pastor’s work endure? The thought may lie close at hand that it must, of course, endure. But, humanly speaking, the question naturally arises, because the bulk of those who have claimed him as their Pastor have rapidly drifted away from his teaching and practices. We find many of them undermining confidence in his having been “that Servant,” in his view of the organization of the Church, in many of his prophetic views, and in almost all of his chronological thoughts, including those connected with 1914 as the full end of the Times of the Gentiles and of the reaping, thereby brushing aside large parts of Volumes 2 and 3, including the Pyramid chapter in Volume 3. We find others adrift on his chronology, prophetic views and many doctrines.

If we look at the Society, we find that they have gradually and cunningly set aside his Six Volumes and his booklets, yea, all his literature, in the interest of their errors and erroneous literature. They have given up the Pastoral work, the Angelophone, the Photo-Drama and Volunteer work, and have entirely ceased colporteuring his books. His work and his methods of conducting the work cannot longer be recognized in the work that the Society is doing; and in important doctrinal, chronological and prophetical respects they have perverted his teachings. Under another name they have introduced Sunday Schools into their classes, thus perverting the organization and mission of the Church. As they represent the largest body of those who claim allegiance to our Pastor’s teachings and practices, and as the bulk of the rest of those who make like professions are, like them, deviating in important respects from his teachings and practices, the question that is being discussed has, humanly speaking, considerable pertinency. In fact there is only one body of Truth people that does hold strictly to his teachings – the Epiphany-enlightened Truth people.

If we were to answer our question from the standpoint of human experience and probability, we should have to admit that the trend of the teachings and practices among the vast bulk of Truth people is in the direction of abandoning his work and nullifying his accomplishments. That this will not actually be accomplished we are Scripturally convinced; but undoubtedly human reason, in the light of the vast and varied revolutionisms of the past fifty-five years among Truth people, would suggest that our Pastor’s work will not stand. If the forces which have operated with such marked external success in revolutionizing his teachings and practices during these fifty-five years should continue so to operate for many more years, no man’s power, humanly speaking, could prevent the professed Truth people from being perverted in their teachings and practices to such an extent as to give them no more relation to our Pastor’s work than the Roman Church sustains to the work of the Apostolic Church. In view of the Society’s gross revolutionisms against his works, one of the most amazing things to fathom is the mental attitude of many Society adherents who believe that the Society is faithfully carrying out our Pastor’s teachings, policies and arrangements. Of course, such an undiscerning attitude would point to a complete apostasy from our Pastor’s work, if it should continue.

But, despite the unfavorable retrospect, aspect and near prospect, we have the full assurance of faith that the work of That Servant will not perish from the earth! In due time his teachings will emerge unscathed from the burning that will devour present errors. His methods of doing the Lord’s work will be reestablished and will successfully carry forward the Lord’s cause after the fire shall have burned up the revolutionistic methods of doing Truth Work; and after the bad leaders of various Truth groups will come out of the fire discredited because of their revolutionism, and abased because of their self-exaltation, our dear Pastor’s teachings and practices will shine with all the greater splendor because of their successful effects contrasted with the failures of present perversions! Faith, being fully assured of this outcome, can quietly await the Lord’s good time for the fulfillment of its confidence; “for the zeal of the Lord will accomplish it,” “in due time.”

Will our Pastor’s work endure? Temporarily it has suffered and will for a short time continue to suffer a partial eclipse in many minds – but as surely as the Truth is powerful and will in the end prevail, so surely the work that Jehovah gave antitypical Eleazar, our Pastor, to do (Num. 3:32; 4:16) will be realized, and thus will endure. In the meantime, it is the privilege of all who wish to support his work to protest against deviations from, and perversions of it whenever, wherever and however they can.

THE RIGHTEOUS IN REMEMBRANCE

Among other promises that the Lord has given the righteous, is one which pledges that they shall be in everlasting remembrance, i.e., that they will be held in sacred, hallowed and loving memory for their faithfulness (Ps. 112:6). While this promise pertains to the Ancient Worthies especially, it is applicable in a general way to all of the righteous. In the Scriptures, certain righteous ones are specified whose very mention by name in the Bible, is a guarantee that they will be everlastingly remembered; for as long as the eternal Word lasts, so long will such persons, e.g., Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, David, Elijah, John the Baptist, Jesus, Paul, Peter, John, etc., be held in hallowed, sacred and loving memory. So, too, certain righteous ones are specified by name in Church History, whose very mention there as antitypes of certain ones in the Scriptures, is a guarantee that they will be held in everlasting remembrance. As long as the eternal Word is understood in the pertinent antitypes, so long will such persons as Marsiglio, Wycliff Huss, Wessel and That Servant be held in hallowed, sacred and loving memory. Yea, of all extra-Biblical characters, we believe That Servant will be held in most hallowed, sacred and loving remembrance. Thus we need not be ashamed to esteem, love and honor one whom Jehovah has so signally esteemed, loved and honored.

Such honor is proper, because the memory of such persons is worthy of being kept alive; because it does those good who keep it alive; and because it continues the good influence of such a person. St. Paul had this same thought in mind when he tells us we should be “looking unto Jesus.” The lord, Himself, vouches for the faithfulness and wisdom of That Servant’s character (Matt. 24:45–47; Luke 12:42–44) He was faithful in great and small things. He was wise in his words, methods, plans, arrangements and works. He was full of the faith, hope and knowledge that make one wise. He was an example of the self-control and patience that make one strong. He practiced that piety and brotherly love that make one just; and he was a living expression of that charity that makes one loving. Beautifully did he exemplify humility, meekness, long–suffering and forbearance. His courage, industry, self-forgetfulness, liberality, amiability and frugality were most striking. He was as nearly a model Christian as Adamic imperfection has permitted any of Adam’s fallen children to be – a true “example of the believers.” Such a character held in remembrance must prove to be a means of honor to God and helpfulness to God’s Household yet remaining on earth.

The office that he held as “that Servant,” made him the Lord’s special representative, and as such it made him in the most remarkable time of all history, Christ’s special eye, mouth and hand. As the Lord’s special eye, it was, generally speaking, his function to see the things first of all that the Lord desired the Church to see. As the Lord’s special mouth, it was his responsibility to declare the Lord’s message, after being apprised of it himself, to others with reference to God, Christ, the Spirit, creation, man, good and evil principles, persons and things, the fall into, and punishment for, sin, the permission of evil, the ransom, high calling, restitution, justification, consecration, the hereafter, covenants, prophecies, histories and types of God’s Word. As Christ’s special hand, it was his duty to superintend and do whatever work the Lord called on him to superintend and do toward the Church, Great Company, Youthful Worthies, Israel and Christendom. How may we, therefore, cooperate with the Lord in furthering the blessed influence of his memory? In the first place, we can do so by imitating, and by encouraging others to imitate his character by sympathetically contemplating his character, as it displayed itself in his life and work, and hold in our minds and hearts the thoughts of noble traits of character, well developed, strengthened, balanced and crystallized. Such thoughts sympathetically entertained will impress their own qualities upon our hearts, and with the exertion of will-power will impress them on our own characters by the imitation of them produced through such sympathetic contemplation. Likewise, we may wisely commend his noble character, as it expressed itself in his life and works, to other sympathetic souls; and we will thus encourage them to imitate his qualities. Such a course is one of the best ways of cooperation with the Lord in furthering the influence of his memory.

Then, too, we may cooperate with our Lord further the blessed influence of That Servant’s memory by esteeming for ourselves and by helping others to esteem his work. Not only should we rightly esteem his office and help others to do the same; but we should also rightly esteem his work and help others thereto. Rightly to esteem his work, implies our taking God’s view of it. How honorable, effective, faithful and wise was that work in its reaping and gleaning the Church, gathering many of the Great Company and the Youthful Worthies, encouraging despondent Israel, comforting the mourning, binding tares, kings and princes and executing judgment! How wonderful it was from the standpoint of a Teacher, Pastor, Advisor, Lecturer, Author, Preacher, Editor, Theologian and Executive! To esteem him as such and to encourage others to esteem him as such will make his memory a blessing; for it will continue in our own and in others’ lives the effects of his works done in the above-mentioned capacities. This implies that we continue to regard him as our helper by faithfully studying and practicing his teachings, spirit and works and commending them to others for their study and practice. This implies that we cherish and live in harmony with these teachings and practices, defend them against all attacks, and do our part in spreading them as well as encouraging others to do likewise. Our so doing will enable us to cooperate with God in preaching the “good Word.”

On this last point, that of perpetuating his work, we desire to make a practical suggestion: As an opponent of Babylon’s error, his chief exploits consisted of his attacks on the doctrines of eternal torment and the consciousness of the dead. In these two particulars he is typed by Jashobeam, David’s mightiest hero, who, in slaying 800 men at one time, typed our Pastor in his work against eternal torment, and in slaying 300 men at another time typed our Pastor in his work against the consciousness of the dead (2 Sam. 23:8; 1 Chro. 11:11; Jashobeam is, in the former passage, called Adino). In a peculiar sense we have the privilege of battling against the two king errors of Babylon, against which errors our Pastor was at his best as an opponent of Babylonian error, and thus, they, above all others, have the privilege of continuing to work along lines in which he took so able a part. Indeed, in the book, Life–Death–Hereafter, in the Hell and Spiritism booklets and in the five tract of his, he has furnished us with our chief ammunition in antitypical Gideon’s Second Battle. It may be cited here that That Servant’s favorite discourse for the public was, “Where Are The Dead?”

One of the best ways in which we can continue one phase of his work is vigorously to prosecute antitypical Gideon’s Second Battle. Oct. 16 is the anniversary of his leaving Bethel alive for the last time, i.e., virtually ceased directing the work at Headquarters; Oct. 30 is the anniversary of his reporting, as the representative member of the man with the writer’s inkhorn, the completion of the Parousia work; Oct. 31 is the anniversary of his death; Nov. 5 is the anniversary of his New York funeral service; Nov. 6 is the anniversary of his Pittsburgh funeral service; and his burial beginning just before 6 P.M. and ending after 6 P.M., which second period was Nov. 7, in God’s way of reckoning time, Nov. 6–7 is the anniversary of his burial. How very appropriate that we devote the time covered by these events – from Oct. 16 to Nov. 7 – to a specially concentrated attack on the doctrines of eternal torment and the consciousness of the dead, in antitypical Gideon’s Second Battle. Certainly, it would be a most appropriate way of making his memory as the foremost warrior of antitypical David against these two king errors a blessing to the glory of God and our Gideon!

Will we not, dear fellow–soldiers, so adjust our earthly affairs as to enable us to give as much time as possible in sharpshooting with the pertinent tracts, pamphlets, etc., at this time? Will we not, dear brethren, one and all, do our utmost so to celebrate our dear Pastor’s anniversary, as a most fitting way of increasing the blessing of his memory to the glory of God and of Christ in freeing others from the above-mentioned errors, in the attacking of which our beloved Jashobeam freed so many, including almost all of us? Will we not take this matter to the Lord in whole-hearted consecration and prayer? Who is on the Lord’s side in this matter? May we all answer, “Here am I, send me!”

THAT SERVANT – THE STEWARD

According to Matt. 24:45-47 and Luke 12:43-46, some individual was to be invested with an office on account of holding which he would be called “that Servant.” According to these passages, this office would be filled after our Lord was to have returned, but before the Church would leave this earth. Its functions, as stated in these verses, were to be twofold: (1) giving the meat in due season and (2) overseeing the work of the Church. Time and sign prophecies prove that our Lord returned in 1874. After His coming He found our Pastor faithfully ministering as much truth as he had; and after certain tests He honored him in the Spring of 1876 with executive charge of the work and in the Fall of 1879 with special mouthpieceship – the two functions of the office of “That Servant.” And all the while that he ministered as such (from 1876 to 1916), he exercised the functions of that office. He did under our Lord have executive charge of the work of the Church at large, and he was the special agent through whom the Lord gave the Parousia Truth. Thus his having exercised the official functions of “that Servant,” and that during the Parousia, proves him to have been “that Servant.” The fulfillment of the prophecies of the two above–noted passages in him, prove him to have been “that Servant.” Thus the Parousia proves him “that Servant.”

But the Epiphany gives us many evidences that he was that Servant; and it is the purpose of this section of this treatise to prove this proposition; (1) The forecasts, (2) foundations and (3) binding power of his teachings in themselves and as to the Epiphany; (4) the Epiphany truths, and (5) his arrangements as to the Epiphany work prove it. First, we will set forth the proofs from the forecasts, foundations and binding powers of his teachings in themselves and as to the Epiphany and the Epiphany truths – truths pertaining to the Little Flock, to the Little Flock and Great Company, to the Great Company, to the Youthful Worthies, to the Jews, to the Conservatives and to the Radicals. The proof holds in the following way: If it can be shown that the things which he taught would take place in the Epiphany are now taking place, it would follow that he was given such knowledge of future things as only one in charge of the storehouse could have had. First, he undeniably taught (Vol. 4, Chapter 1) that there would be an Epiphany period following the Parousia, and it would be contemporaneous with the Time of Trouble. He taught this many years before the Epiphany and the Time of Trouble came – long before they were, humanly speaking, to be expected, e.g., in the booklet, Our Lord’s Return. Yea, long beforehand, he even gave 1914 as the year in which the Epiphany would begin. He taught that during that period special manifestation of persons, principles and acts would be made. No one else, except through him, had previous knowledge of these things. They have all come to pass, and prove that he must have had the storehouse in charge in a peculiar sense – as its special steward.

This is likewise manifest from what he taught with reference to the Little Flock, Among other things, he taught that Jesus and the Little Flock, as the antitypical Gideon and three hundred, would engage in two conflicts with errorists during the Time of Trouble, i.e., during the Epiphany. And these antitypical battles surely have been having their fulfillment during the Epiphany: the first battle from 1914 to 1916, and the second beginning in 1920 against the two king errors, the consciousness of the dead, and eternal torment – and yet continuing, as the Battle is not over. His forecasting of Epiphany events involving both the Little Flock and the Great Company, seeing that these events are fulfilling, proves him to have been that Servant. How clearly he forecast the separation of antitypical Elijah and Elisha, and that on account of disagreement on matters of policy is distinct from matters of doctrine, also the second smiting of Jordan by antityplcal Elisha after that separation! He also showed that in the extreme end of the Age – the Epiphany – the antitypical Priests and Levites would be separated, according to the tabernacle picture.

The Epiphany Truth shows us in the divisions of the Lord’s people the fulfillment of this tabernacle picture. In his teaching that Aaron’s white robe represents the covering of the Church, and that Aaron’s putting it off represents the Church passing out of the world, when considered with reference to Aaron’s leading forth Azazel’s goat while still clothed in sacrificial garments, he impliedly taught that while the Church would still be in the flesh, and after its last member had been offered to God by Jesus, the Great Company, as Azazel’s antitypical Goat, would be dealt with. The Epiphany Truth reveals the fulfillment of this before our eyes. But our Pastor taught that all of these things would take place after the reaping – the Parousia – was over; hence would take place in the Epiphany. But to have been able from the Word to have forecast all these marvels implies that he was the steward who had charge of the storehouse to give the seasonal meat, i.e., that he was that Servant. He was God’s eye, hand and mouth.

His teachings on what would happen to the Great Company during the Epiphany confirms the thought that he was that Servant. He taught that the sins of Christendom would be confessed over them, that they would be driven out of the Holy as New Creatures into the Court, and that in their humanity they would be led out of the Court into the fit man’s hands for buffeting experiences. These things are fulfilling toward the Truth section of Azazel’s Goat, and part of them toward its nominal church section, now in the Epiphany. He further showed that, driven out of the Holy, as Levites they would not see clearly the truths seen in the Holy – that they would lose much of the Parousia Truth which once had made them “clean.” (John 15:3) This is also fulfilling now in the Epiphany and these things are being made plain through the Epiphany Truth. Hence the Epiphany Truth, giving the proof of the truthfulness of his forecasts, proves that he was that Servant. He was God’s eye, hand and mouth.

In a less emphatic sense he forecast the Youthful Worthy movement; for he taught that consecrations without the Spirit–begettal would take place during the ministry of the Great Company. He did not use the term, Youthful Worthies; but he did speak of those who are meant by that term. We see about us such a class now operating. The Epiphany Truth has brought out various details with reference to this class; and his teachings now passing into visual fulfillment in their development as a class, he must have been “that Servant” in giving us the forecast; for such a forecast implies that its maker was the one who had full charge of the storehouse – was that Servant.

He likewise forecast that during the Time of Trouble, which he considered synonymous with the Epiphany, the Jews would in Palestine greatly increase in numbers, wealth, influence, possession of the land and development in national respects. This increase in these respects we now see going on before us, and they are additionally a mighty forecast of what will yet take place in the remaining time of the Epiphany. For him to have made such a forecast, which the Epiphany increasingly witnesses as fulfilling, proves that he had charge of the storehouse of Truth, and therefore functioned in this respect as that Servant.

He likewise taught that during the Time of Trouble – the Epiphany – the conservative groups of Society would unite in defense of their order of affairs as against the radicals. This we see taking place on a world–wide scale. The governments are gathering together in leagues and alliances as never before. The churches are federating and uniting as never before. The capitalists are uniting as never before. Moreover, these three conservative groups are supporting one another; for they feel that their spirit and purposes are kindred, and will stand or fall together before the onslaughts of the radicals. On the other hand, he forecast that the radicals would get together, but in two groups: a less radical and a more radical group. This we see fulfilling in the less radical labor parties and in the more radical labor parties – antitypical Jehu and antitypical Hazael. Both of these groups are radical in the estimation of the conservatives. He taught that the less radical group will bring about the Revolution, and the more radical, the Anarchy. While we have not yet progressed to these stages, still in the formation of these groups, we see the seeds from which will spring the plants of Revolution and Anarchy. Thus in these respects we see during the Epiphany his forecast fulfilling; and the Epiphany truths have simply elaborated his forecasts, and when fulfilled, have shown how they came to pass. His forecasts as to Epiphany happenings, clarified by the Epiphany Truth so far as they have been due to be fulfilled, are in the light of the Epiphany truths proofs that he was that Servant.

FUNDAMENTAL EPIPHANY TEACHINGS

From a second standpoint, our Pastor’s relations to the Epiphany truths prove that he was that Servant, i.e., the fact that his teachings have been foundational to the Epiphany Truth, but he was also privileged to do the excavation work for the Epiphany Truth and lay its foundations, that upon these foundations the Epiphany truths, not clearly seen, or not seen at all in his time, could be substantially built. These foundations are certain matters pertaining to the Little Flock, the Great Company, the Youthful Worthies, the tentatively justified, the Jews, the conservatives and the radicals. Under the preceding part of our first proof we called attention to these things as forecasts. Here we call attention to them as foundations of the Epiphany Truth; for the Epiphany Truth is built foursquare upon what he taught us with reference to these classes, not only in certain Parousia aspects, but also in certain Epiphany aspects. Built upon this foundation, the Epiphany Truth, with all its strength to establish Truth and refute error, has stood firm and unbreakable amid attacks, and crushing to error when attacking the latter. To have laid a foundation so substantial that It admits of such a weighty and imperishable superstructure, is a strong evidence of the fact that he was That Servant.

Another aspect of his teachings as to certain Epiphany truths and relations that proves that he is that Servant, is the fact that his teachings cannot in the Epiphany be repudiated or be supplanted by other teachings, without manifesting the perpetrators of such things as Great Company members. This, of course, proves that he, in a most particular sense, represented God as a mouthpiece, and that, therefore, to repudiate his teachings or put others in their place is equivalent to repudiating God’s teachings, or to put others in their place. Many of those who once held his teachings and who regarded him as that Servant, have presumed to repudiate his teachings, or to put others in their place some denying completely that he was that Servant; but this has always resulted in God’s repudiating them as Little Flock members and manifesting them as Great Company members. Why should this be only in the case of his teachings and not in the case of those of others before the Epiphany? Can it be explained on any other ground than that he was God’s special mouthpiece and that, therefore, his teachings are God’s teachings, and that therefore, to rebel against them is to rebel against God (Ps. 107:10,11)? This is the only ground on which such a course on God’s part could be explained, and, therefore, we present it as an Epiphany Truth proof that our Pastor was that Servant. (yes, this is an Epiphany Truth that has been revolutionized against by an erstwhile Epiphany-enlightened Great Company member. The Executive Trustee of the LHMM tells us that the death of the Epiphany Messenger manifested all new creatures as Great Company members. He is a self-admitted Great Company leader, but this manifests him as uncleansed – continuing in his double mind, which all will do until they are fully cleansed.)

So far we have shown how the Epiphany and the Epiphany truths witness to our Pastor’s being that Servant. Now we briefly show how the Epiphany work proves the same thing. The Lord gave, through him the methods and arrangements according to which the Epiphany work of the Levites was to be done. This is especially true with respect to the Levitical work that is to be done by corporations. This being true, we should expect the Divine blessing to rest upon their work to the extent that in a proper spirit they do it according to these arrangements and methods. We should also expect the Divine disapproval to rest upon their work to the extent that they neglect, ignore, pervert or set aside these arrangements and methods, or substitute others in their stead.

All would grant the reasonableness of these two things, if they accept the thought that God gave these methods and arrangements through him. One would also grant that the same would be the case if Little Flock members should observe or neglect, ignore, pervert or set aside the arrangements and methods that God gave through him for its work, or substitute gathers in their stead. What do we find actually to be the case? Those Little Flock and Great Company members who regard these methods and arrangements in their work are blessed therein. Those Little Flock members who ignore, neglect, pervert or set aside these methods and arrangements, or substitute others in their stead, are dropped out of the Little Flock as manifested Levites; and those levites who ignore, neglect, pervert or set aside the methods and arrangements for Levite work, or substitute others in their stead, make failures of their efforts and receive priestly opposition, fit-man experiences and Azazelian buffeting. What does this prove? It undoubtedly proves that God sanctions the pertinent methods and arrangements given through our Pastor, as Divinely obligatory; and this proves that our Pastor acted as that Servant in giving them – that his office as the ruler over the household (one of the two functions of that Servant’s office) is recognized, sanctioned and vindicated by God,

The above considerations are Epiphany–Truth proofs that our Pastor was that Servant, and as such we should heartily recognize, accept and pertinently subject ourselves to him in the lord. We believe that we can best do this by faithfully studying, spreading and practicing his teachings. This should be done at all times. But in harmony with a custom of many years’ standing among Epiphany–enlightened brethren, we believe that especially, but, of course, not exclusively, the period covered by the date of his final leaving of Bethel and the date of burial, Oct. 16 – Nov. 7, might well be taken for the spread of his teachings along the lines of Gideon’s Second Battle. We desire to encourage the dear ones to this end. We also think that it will prove helpful to us better to study, spread and practice his teaching, if we annually celebrate with a fitting service in our ecclesias and, where there are no ecclesias, in private, the date of his passing beyond the veil – Oct. 31. Let us, beloved, do these things not as worshipers of messengers, but as children of our Father, who has so greatly used and honored that Servant, and that, among other things, so greatly to our blessing. And may God bless us therein and bless the memory of our beloved Pastor – that faithful and wise Servant! “Them that honor Me, I will honor.”

CONCLUDING REMARKS

Not seldom we have been asked to publish our Pastor’s last will and testament. These requests have raised the question in our mind as to the advisability of publishing this will. Therefore, we have printed a supply of them, and will gladly mail them free to any who request them. We trust that its re-reading will prove instructive and edifying to all of our dear readers. We would also suggest that it be read as a part of the program of some of our Pastor’s memorial celebrations.

Foregoing we offered the conclusion that That Servant’s teachings would prevail; and we believe there is sound reason for this. In Rev. 8:2 we are told that “seven angels stand in the presence of God, and seven trumpets were given to them”; and Rev. 11:15 states the “seventh angel sounded his trumpet.” Here are the Berean Comments on that text:

“The seventh trumpet, the trump of God, the last trump, the Jubilee trump of knowledge and liberty: It began sounding in 1874 and will continue to the end of the Millennium.”

In verse 18 we are given the result of that sounding: “The nations were enraged, and thy wrath came.” Again the Berean Comment: “Implying contention, world–wide war (written In 1904)... in the great time of trouble.”

All during the Parousia the Truth people were a unit in accepting the foregoing; and time itself has demonstrated the truth thus stated, although some who once accepted it are no longer at all certain if they still believe it – some openly casting it aside. We, however, see ample evidence to confirm our complete belief in the above. That Servant unquestionably began the sounding of the “seventh trump”; and, if it is to continue to the end of the Millennium, then it will sound louder and louder, instead of falling to earth. Thus, the Truth that has come during the primary sounding of that trump cannot fall in decay; it will continue to withstand all attack.

In this connection, we offer Prov. 24:16: “A just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again.” The “just(ified) man” – the Christ Company – would be well represented in the “seven angels, with the seven trumpets.” As each of the angels sounded the special trumpet for that time the truths they gave quickly fell into erroneous hands, which represented the “falling.” But the Truth arose again with the appearance of the next angel with his message; which the text says would occur “seven times.” On every hand we have ample evidence of the falling since the seventh angel has left us, but the statement is sure that “he riseth up again.” But, if the seventh trump is to prevail until the end of the Millennium, it would seem a proper conclusion that the fundamental truths of that seventh angel would have to continue strong all during that time. Thus, the teachings of That Servant will continue to find support from some group of Truth people who are strong enough, and informed enough, to “earnestly contend” for them. And to such the promise will continue sure:

“Thanks be to that God, Who always leads us forth to triumph with the Anointed One, and who diffuses by us the fragrance of the knowledge (the Truth) of Him, in every place.... We are not like the many, trafficking the Word of God; but really from sincerity, In the presence of God, we speak concerning Christ.” (2 Cor. 2:14–17, Dia.)

Sincerely your brother,

John J. Hoefle, Pilgrim

THE LABOR-DAY CONVENTION

At Pottstown, Pa., Sept. 4-6, R. G. Jolly once more resorted to his false-accusing invectives and diatribe against JJH and Company. “They are dead from their class standing,” he says. Yet, from the other side of his mouth he declares he is praying for them (as stated in his July-August Present Truth), which is about what we might expect from one in the clutches of Azazel. Do we have the slightest hint that Jesus ever prayed for Judas? Rather, He said it were good for that man if he had never been born. And St. John definitely tells us in 1 John 5:16, “There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.” Apparently, RGJ is not familiar with that Scripture.

Also, he shouts from the platform, Don’t read anything the sifters write. Of course, this is an exact take-off from Papacy’s conduct during the counterfeit reign of Christ. It is an exact take-off of Big Babylon against the Harvest Truth (They shrieked to High Heaven – Don’t read those erroneous books!); and it is an exact take-off from the instructions of That Evil Servant and the present Jehovah’s Witnesses against present Epiphany Truth. Thus, RGJ finds himself in real superb company in his present teaching. Such advice is a direct revolutionism against St. Paul’s advice, “Prove all things, and hold fast that which is good.” It is a direct revolutionism against That Servant’s teaching to “study to show thyself approved unto God.” Such teaching can do nothing other than develop rank sectarianism in his supporters; and Volume E-4:291 (47) says:

“Sectarianism is a great sin; for it does not act from devotion to the Truth, the Truth arrangements and the Spirit of the Truth, but from devotion to partisanship. The Truth, its arrangements and its Spirit are by it neglected or antagonized whenever this is in the interests of the sect. Their actual, though not verbal motto is: ‘My party I stand for it, right or wrong.’ Therefore they support their sect and leaders regardless of how wrong they are. Among the Truth people the partisan support that the Societyites have given ‘the channel’ and ‘the present management’ in their gross wrongs and errors ever since 1917 is a classic example of the partisanship, sectarianism, that is a part of Great Company uncleanness. This partisanship is at least as extreme as that which the most bigoted of Romanists give the papacy and their church. In what sense can God be spoken of as putting the plague of antitypical leprosy into such a sect? Somewhat after the manner of His sending strong delusions upon reprobates (2 Thes. 2:9, 11). He withdraws hindrance from Satan’s efforts to make them partisans, sectarians.” (He withdraws all brotherly fellowship and favor of the priesthood from them—JJH)

That Servant has this to say: “Another giant which assaults the Lord’s people, but which in the present time can be overcame only by the David class, the body of Christ, is the giant of sectarian influence. How strong, how majestic, how well armed, how influential is this great giant, whose powers are exercised in a large measure in intimidating the Lord’s true children, so that all their lifetime they are subject to bondage and fail to attain the liberty with which Christ makes free indeed!” (Aug. 15, 1903 – Reprint 3231) Now in this Epiphany there is another faithful class that will overcome sectarianism – the faithful Youthful Worthies. The Great Company as a class will not be victors in the battle against Oreb and Zeeb. (See E-5:228)

Thus, every sectarian encourages sin by his teachings. And, as Brother Johnson has stated, It is Azazel’s Goat (one goat for the Lord, one goat for Azazel—Lev. 16: 8, see margin) that has built up the sectarian systems of error; and it seems RGJ is determined to be not one whit behind the chiefest of them. Also, in E-4:290 is this:

“The leprous houses of Canaan are used to represent the Great Company sects; and these suggest to us the sixth form of Great Company uncleanness – their sectarianism.”

Our own course is just the reverse of this: We counsel our readers to place RGJ’s papers side by side with ours; compare them, then determine for themselves wherein the Truth is to be found. And this was the course of RGJ early in the Epiphany toward those who opposed the Epiphany Truth when he was under the restraining hand of the Epiphany Messenger – when the Truth was on his side. That Wise and Faithful Servant also repeatedly advised his readers, Don’t accept anything just because I say so; prove it for yourselves. He did this because he did not want to cultivate a truckling servile spirit in his supporters. He wanted them all to quit themselves like men; and that is our attitude toward our readers. Of course, we had expected something like the above from RGJ, and on our way to the Convention we made comment that we could be sure it would come, because our recent papers have been hurting him badly by pulverizing his “gazing.” The two main targets of the Man of Sin were Martin Luther and Thomas Cranmer, because they, too, had hurt the Papacy more than any of the reformers.

RGJ makes loud lament about Youthful Worthies criticizing him – and his ‘superior’ class. Every time he makes discourse he reveals just how ‘superior’ he is! However, the Ancient Worthies did not hesitate to criticize the renegade ‘superior’ Jewish priesthood, for which they were “stoned, they were sawn asunder, were slain with the sword” (Heb. 11:37). In this they pictured forth the actions of the fully faithful during this Age, who have received similar treatment. They were such as would have been of the Very Elect had they not lived too soon; and the faithful Youthful Worthies today would have been of the Very Elect had they not lived too late to enter that select company. But the Youthful Worthies who have resolved to be “faithful to the lord, the Truth, and the brethren” would be presenting an exercise in futility, a mere profusion of words to no purpose, should they now fail to protest any evils in conduct or errors of teaching against any one – even a Little Flock member – should he be wrong, and leading others into such wrongs. Such an attitude now by RGJ is simply embracing the Age-old evils, The Divine Right of Kings and the Divine Right of the Clergy. “The King can do no wrong”; and the clergy are the interpreters of Holy Writ, the mouthpieces of God. As instance RGJ’s “doublemind,” he actually instructed us to go to other Levite groups after 1950 to protest against their errors; but now “it has come upon thee, and thou faintest; it toucheth thee, and thou art troubled.” So, what was right then is wrong now!

He says the sifters are bitter because they expose his sins and errors. Was Bro. Johnson also bitter when he exposed the same things in RGJ and published them in his books for all to read? Much of what we say about him is simply quoting from those books – books he himself offers for sale to one and all as the Truth. Of course, it is clear enough from the record that he tried to ‘gain control of Brother Johnson’ (See E-10, pp. 586-594) and tried to talk down the Lord’s mouthpiece as his equal, as RGJ and his soulmates “darkened counsel by words without knowledge.” (Job. 38:2) Indeed, we are in a much better position now to appreciate the vexations and Afflictions that this ‘superior’ class brought upon Brother Johnson! During the Epiphany Messenger’s life we had much pity and sympathy for RGJ, and so expressed ourselves; but we see now that all of our sympathy should have been with Brother Johnson who was persecuted and afflicted for his faithfulness to the Lord, the Truth and the Brethren. But, “Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” So while we can sympathize with the Epiphany Messenger, those who are guilty of causing his sufferings are more to be pitied, because they do not receive the reward of the fully faithful – and because their afflictions will be much more, and harder to bear.

A SIGNIFICANT TYPE

At the death of Solomon there was rebellion in Israel, as related in the 12th chapter of 1st Kings, the Jews then becoming divided into the ten tribes of Israel and the two tribes of Judah. In that division the ten tribes elected Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, as their king; and that individual immediately proceeded to commit three great sins: He made two calves of gold, “he set the one in Bethel, and the other put he in Dan. And this thing became a sin.” (1 Kgs. 12:29,30); “And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people” (I Kgs. 12:31); “stood by the altar to offer incense.... And his hand dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to him.” (I Kgs. 13:1-4) The two calves type sectarianism and clericalism; and Jeroboam’s actions as just given were so revolting that of at least 17 kings that subsequently reigned in Israel, the record states, “For he walked in all the way of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and in his sin wherewith he made Israel to sin, to provoke the Lord God of Israel to anger with their vanities.” (1 Kgs. 16:26) “And this thing became sin unto the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the face of the earth.” (I Kgs. 13:34)

It is not our wish to set Jeroboam forth as a type of RGJ, but the illustration fits his actions since the death of the Epiphany Solomon, in his encouraging sectarianism by telling his followers not to read any refutations of his presentations, and of his offering “strange fire” (false doctrine) before the Lord. The three sins Jeroboam committed are given great stress as a warning to all not to go and do likewise. The attempt to offer incense upon the altar which he had made (which was a priestly work in Israel) ii just another way of, saying he offered “strange fire” (false doctrine) before the Lord. In the wilderness journey those who tried that were immediately stricken dead; but the punishment to Jeroboam was merely that his hand dried up. This was not the golden altar of the Holy, but one which Jeroboam himself had constructed, which may account for the lesser punishment to him. In the case of RGJ he, too, has offered “strange fire” (false doctrine) of Campers Consecrated – an action strictly forbidden to any one that has been ejected from the Holy as he has been. And our efforts to refute and correct him have so thoroughly disturbed him that he is now forced to resort to gross sectarianism to keep himself afloat. His conduct at present is an exact duplication of the course of That Evil Servant and his supporters, as it is related in E-4:221-224:

“Satan is the most cunning being in the Universe. Hence, among others, he seeks to enlist on his side those who like him are more or less cunning. In working against the Truth servants he always studies how best to overthrow their influence... He invents fictitious weaknesses.... whether the charges are true or false. This accounts for his charging through his dupes our Lord as being illegitimately born, as a madman, as a demoniac, as a blasphemer and as a rebel.... In the same way he caused That Servant to be falsely slandered as a heretic, as an immoral man, as a swindler, and as an unkind and unfaithful husband. Whenever religious errorists and frauds cannot meet the exposures of their false doctrines or evil practices by argument, Satan fills their mouths with false and malicious slanders against their exposers. (One goat for Azazel – Lev. 16:8, margin—JJH).... Warnings not to read our writings.... Of course, Satan finds the bad Levite leaders just the persons to be his ready mouthpieces in this work.... Let us, dear Brethren, rejoice that thus we may drink together this cup with the Lord and with others of His Priesthood. It is necessary that such experiences come, that the approved may be manifested, that the partially approved may be manifested, and that the totally disapproved may be manifested. And such will indeed be the result of such experiences; for we are living in the Epiphany! And who shall stand when He maketh manifest?” All unbiased persons who heard RGJ’s discourse an Sunday night will recognize that the foregoing is an exact and fair description of his tactics.

THE QUESTION MEETING

In the Monday morning Question meeting, the Hill Ophel was discussed by RGJ, and it would seem that our recent refutations have him badly confused. The question was asked: Are you revolutionizing against the teachings of the Messengers and the Apostle Paul when you teach Epiphany Campers Consecrated will be the chief class in Restitution, honor and position? He emphatically denied that he was revolutionizing against the Truth given to us by the Apostle Paul and the two Messengers. He made quite some bugaboo about those who read something into his presentations that isn’t there – especially the sifters. He asserted that the Hill Ophel has only an Epiphany application – that his Consecrated Campers (whom he claims are typed by the hill Ophel) are certainly now more desirable than the unconverted Jews;” that now in this Epiphany period we are looking to the ‘hills;’ All things being equal, we would have no quarrel with this.

Certainly, any one now trying to be a Christian should be more acceptable to us than any one who is not so. But here is what he presented in his May-June 1971 Present Truth on the Consecrated Epiphany Campers and the hill Ophel:

“In this connection the Consecrated Epiphany Campers, represented by the hill Ophel, are clearly distinguished as a higher class than the rest of the Quasi-elect and the Non-elect, who are represented by the valley sections of Jerusalem. Bro. Johnson shows this, e.g., in E 16, p. 283 (comp. E 4, 321), where we read: ‘The valleys of the city represent the subjects of the Kingdom – the restitution class.’ Note also his statement in E 12, p. 526: ‘the valley between (evidently he is referring to the Tyropoeon valley, which separated the hill Ophel from Mount Zion) symbolizes the Restitution class: the higher parts (of the valley) the quasi-elect, believing Jews and faithful faith-justified, and the lower parts the unbelieving Jews and Gentiles of this life’.... The highest class among them will be the-consecrated Epiphany Campers, who as consecrated ones during the time of sin’s ascendancy will by faithfulness to God have developed in Christ-likeness more than the rest of the quasi-elect. As mentioned above, they are represented by one of the three ‘little hills’ that will ‘bring peace (shalom, prosperity) to the people by righteousness’ (Psa. 72:3).” (P. 40, col. 1 and col. 2)

RGJ mentions his Campers Consecrated “who as consecrated ones during the time of sin’s ascendancy,” etc. We have repeatedly quoted from That Servant and the Epiphany Messenger that all who consecrate after the High Calling is closed and before the Highway of Holiness is opened, will be rewarded, if faithful, in partnership with the Ancient Worthies – i.e. will receive “the better resurrection.” (Heb. 11:35)

And in his extensive article on the Hill Ophel In the Nov-Dec. 1970 Present Truth, col, 1, p. 90, he gives this:

“In this connection the Consecrated Epiphany Campers represented by the hill Ophel, are clearly distinguished as a higher class than the rest of the Quasi-elect and the Non-elect, who are represented by the valley sections of Jerusalem... By such ‘prophesying’ and otherwise the Quasi-elect, ‘the lowest order of Abraham’s pre-Millennial seed,’ will ‘as the special assistants of the Ancient and Youthful Worthies’ be specially used above the rest of the restitution class to bless all the families, nations and kindreds of the earth according to the Covenant’ (E 11, p. 293). Chief among them will be the Consecrated Epiphany Campers, who as consecrated ones during the time of sin’s ascendancy will by faithfulness to God have developed in Christ-likeness more than the rest of the Quasi-elect. (RGJ is clearly setting forth a Millennium picture here – and NOT an Epiphany picture—JJH) As mentioned above, they are represented by one of the three ‘little hills’ and will ‘bring peace (shalom, prosperity) to the people by righteousness.’ We thank God for this additional item of advancing Truth on the Consecrated Epiphany Campers, given to His people in due time for the strengthening of their faith as to His provision for this class, the fifth class of His consecrated people. We know that it, like all other parts of the advancing Truth, it will come under special attack by the Adversary. Satan has always opposed the ‘meat in due season,’ given by our Lord to supply the needs of His people.”

At this same Labor Day Convention he tells the brethren that he has never taught that his Consecrated Campers are a higher class than the Jews; that they are only ‘higher’ now in this Epiphany period. Is he now Joining the ‘Adversary’ (the “sifters”) in” opposing” the Advancing (?) Truth that he presented in the May-June 1971 Present Truth and in the Nov-Dec. Present Truth? Is he now confessing what he presented on the hill Ophel regarding the Kingdom picture, together with other errors about their being the highest class in the Kingdom, is actually advancing Error, and not advancing Truth at all? Of course his ‘adversary’ against such errors has been especially JJH and Company.

He then progressed to the Millennial picture and pointed out in no uncertain language that he had not revolutionized against the Truth as given by the Apostle Paul and the two Messengers – as the Jews would be chief in the Kingdom, but they are not chief now in this Epiphany. He pointed out that his Campers Consecrated would have to become Jews in the Kindom. Thus, if his Campers are more desirable now, then the only advantage he can offer them is PRESENT REWARD for their sacrificing. This is indeed something new and unusual in the Harvest Truth teachings! And, when he says that his Campers Consecrated would eventually be grafted in with the Jews, he could not only include in that statement the Campers, but All the quasi-elect, as well as all Restitutionists who eventually gain life – because every one receiving Restitution must eventually come into one of the twelve tribes of Israel – which is another proof that the JEWS will have the pre-eminence among the Restitutionists, just as the Apostle Paul and the two Messengers have taught. And further, he is now clearly teaching that his sacrificing Campers now will actually be demoted in honor in the Mediatorial reign. This should greatly encourage all of them to be fervent in spirit, serving the lord now! We have been taught before that the “promises” are necessary to encourage us to “keep on keeping on” the narrow way of self-sacrifice.

Then a question was asked: “Brother Johnson teaches the Adamic death process will be plagued out of the willing and obedient. Will the Adamic death process be plagued out of the unwilling?” His answer was an emphatic No! He said it wouldn’t be eliminated from the ‘sinners’ of a 100 years, nor from the goats of the Little Season. He said this question was antagonistic, and ridiculed the word ‘plagued’ – didn’t like the word and thought it was used too many times. He made quite some buffoonery over it, and had his audience laughing. However, we do not “rejoice in iniquity.”

Of course, many of his listeners have probably never read Volume 15 at all; and it seems RGJ is not overly familiar with it himself, or he would not publicly have ridiculed Brother Johnson for using the word ‘plague’ so many times; so we make the generous allowance that “through Ignorance he did it.” But we make the observation here that he often reveals his “foolish virgin” limitations when he casts his puerile jibes at the sifters. On p. 215 of E-15, Brother Johnson says this:

“It is during this period that God by Christ will by resuscitating all the dead destroy hades – the Adamic death state – and will by restitution processes plague the Adamic death process out of existence (Hos. 13:14; Rev. 20:13,14), even as vs. 23-28 prove.”

And in the face of all this sarcasm and frivolity, he had the effrontery to tell the brethren at that Question meeting that the ‘sifters’ teach that those who don’t have the Adamic death process eliminated from their characters would die the Adamic death – and he ridiculed us for teaching such error.

For the record, and the benefit of our readers, we have never made such a ‘foolish’ statement; we were attacking his error that the Adamic death process would be eliminated in the goats at the beginning of the Little Season, as he Then was teaching. We know, even as all faithful Bible students know, that any one coming back from the death state in the Kingdom cannot again die the Adamic death – but we also know that there will be many who will not submit to the righteous rule of the Kingdom and will never have the Adamic death process (unholy heart’s condition) eliminated from their characters. But, as has often been in the past, he accused us of teaching false doctrine when he himself was the guilty one. In all this he is “reeling to and fro like a drunkard.”(Psalms 107:27)

In one of our papers where we were refuting RGJ’s error that the Adamic death process would be eliminated in the goats at the beginning of the Little Season, we quoted a statement made by RGJ in the Jan-Feb. 1970 Present Truth, p. 15, col. 1, par. 3, and which we now reproduce as follows:

“Note this: If ‘the Adamic death – or dying – process’ would be ‘still present with’ the Goat class in the Little Season, then under that Adamic death process they would still in the Little Season gradually be dying the Adamic death, and would continue to do so as this process would proceed to accomplish its work to a finality.” (This is RGJ’s own statement, and all emphasis by him—JJH)

RGJ was then – in that Jan-Feb. 1970 Present Truth – contending that all restitutionists would have the Adamic death And the Adamic death process eliminated at the beginning of the Little Season. Certainly all the willing and obedient will have the Adamic death process eliminated from their characters at the beginning of the Little Season, because all who survive the Little Season will enter it with perfect characters. They would not be able to stand the tests of that Little Season if they did not enter it with perfect characters. But the goats – those who have not obeyed from the heart during the Kingdom – will not be able to stand the tests, and will be manifested as goats.

And further in this Jan-Feb. 1970 Present Truth, p. 15, col. 1, par. 4, RGJ gives this: “If this errorist’s teaching were correct, that the ‘unholy heart’s condition’ of the ‘goat’ class is ‘the Adamic death (or dying) process still present with them,’ and that ‘those persons ‘defiled’ with it must first be destroyed before the thing can be annihilated,’ then the Ransom would fail in its restitution work of giving full deliverance from the power of Adamic death (including the Adamic dying process) before placing them on trial in the Little Season for everlasting life or everlasting death the Second Death.”

From these quotations from the Present Truth, can there be any doubt that he is the one who was teaching the error that “If the Adamic Death process were still with the goats in the Little Season they would be dying the Adamic Death?” But now – at this Labor Day Convention he reverses himself on this teaching, as he emphatically declares that those who die the ‘sinners’ at 100 years of age, as well as the goats of the Little Season – DO NOT HAVE THE ADAMIC DEATH PROCESS ELIMINATED FROM THEIR CHARACTERS!

And he also quotes from Brother Johnson in his Jan-Feb. 1970 Present Truth the following: “Our Lord will operate restitution processes on the race so powerfully during those thousand years as to bring all the obedient to perfection – those obeying only externally, and not from the heart, to perfection of physical, mental, moral and religious faculty, but not to perfection of character (not having eliminated the Adamic death process from their characters—JJH); and those who obey externally and also from the heart, to perfection of both faculty and character. Thus the entire race will be perfect when the Millennium is over, and it will be in a better position to be tested for fitness or unfitness for everlasting life than inexperienced Adam and Eve were when they were put on trial for life in Eden (E 2, p. 145).”

And with the above we fully agree, but there is nothing in that statement from Brother Johnson that would support RGJ in the errors he was presenting in that Jan-Feb. 1970 Present Truth. In his confused state of mind he often quotes from the Messengers and from the Scriptures statements and texts that annihilate his own position. Brother Johnson has repeatedly said the Great Company leaders would do just that while they are befuddled by Azazel – and this is just one more sample of it.

He has also revolutionized against the Abandonment process of the Great Company as given on p. 525 of E-15. He sets aside Brother Johnson’s teaching that ALL Great Company members would have to be fully abandoned to Azazel before their cleansing could be effected – those who lost Little Flockship by the ‘skin of their teeth’ (which RGJ so often quotes, indicating he is among that group) and those who escape the Second Death by the same margin. RGJ now teaches this is all wrong – that some of them don’t have to be fully abandoned – all brotherly fellowship and favor withdrawn from them – before they get their cleansing. He tells us that the “Good levites” – he and those Great Company members who agree with him – have an “attenuated” sort of abandonment. However, Brother Johnson didn’t use the word ‘attenuated’ for the Abandonment process in his teaching. He also stated that some of the Little Flock went into the Second Death. While it is true that those who go into the Second Death since Pentecost have at one time been of the Little Flock, but when he makes such a statement as that, it is only a half-truth, because only the Great Company are in danger of the Second Death. The Little Flock are in danger of losing their crowns, if measurably faithful. When a Little Flock member loses his crown, he is first remanded to the Great Company.

It seems most appropriate here to quote from E-15:519-521 on the Great Company while very unfaithful:

“As we saw that there was a progress from good to a mixture of good and evil in their dispositions, the good being the Holy Spirit in them, while they were measurably unfaithful, so there is a progress in their condition of being very unfaithful; for it degenerates into varying degrees of a preponderance of the evil mind over the good mind in the worst of them, and in the preponderance of the good mind over the evil mind in a comparatively few of them – those who almost, but not quite won out in the high calling; and in some it is more or less a case of half of one and half of the other, with considerable of see-sawing between them. Yet a double mind is in all of them, as James assures us: ‘A double minded man is unstable in all his ways’ (Jas. 1:8), with very much of variation in the double-mindedness in the individuals, even as we saw above. In their stage of being very unfaithful, the bad side of their double mind works overtime, varyingly, as must always be kept in mind, in various individuals.

“Always they either set aside in revolutionism more or less of the teachings of the Bible and more or less of the arrangements that God has given for His work, or they partisanly support others who become guilty as leaders or ledlings of these two forms of rebellion... As these evil qualities grow in them under Satanic manipulation they lead their followers into increasing errors and Satan-given wrong arrangements of the Lord’s work. These revolutionisms arousing the opposition of the faithful, controversies set in, wherein, to defend themselves against the Scriptural truths that the faithful bring against their errors, to maintain a semblance of consistency in their errors, They give up one truth after another; and their sectarian crown-lost followers partisanly support their leaders in these controversies, and thus with them lose more and more of the lord’s truths and arrangements, though they together with the newly adopted errors hold to those formerly held truths and arrangements not involved in these repudiations. With all of this they increasingly lose part of their ability to discern between truth and error. This shows a deterioration in the bad part of their intellects and their intellects’ contents, while it still shows that their intellects still retain some of their former ability to see and to retain some truth – doublemindedness in their intellects in varying degrees....

“As their heads-deteriorate, so do their hearts deteriorate. The very fact that their heads deteriorate is preceded with some deterioration of their hearts, and in turn is followed by further worsening of the heart. Their errors of head certainly partially undermine their faith, sear more or less their consciences and put a cloud between them and the Lord, curtailing their spirit of prayer and a lively sense of His favor, fellowship and approval. Moreover, they make them more or less bitterly partisan against the faithful for their opposing their wrong course (reviling them as sifters and renegades from the faith—JJH), whereas they should love and appreciate them all the more for their efforts to rescue them from the snares of Satan.”

At this same Question Meeting, a question was asked: “Do you advise the Lord’s people to go to a psychiatrist?” He answered that they should not – that the Lord is the place to go – with which we agree. However, he did say there were some exceptions in cases of legal necessity, etc. We are glad to note, too, that he has come to that conclusion. Perhaps now he himself wouldn’t go to a psychiatrist again, as he did in 1938 when he was manifested as a crown-loser. And that is some improvement.

He complained also about “antagonistic questions” presented in that meeting. All the questions we heard him handle were straight Bible questions, some of which we ourselves offered, and some from others about whom we know nothing. However, just why should any Bible question be ‘antagonistic’? Clearly enough, the answer is they were antagonistic to his errors, but not at all antagonistic from a Truth standpoint.

Those of us who have been in close contact with the measurably faithful New Creatures since the demise of the Epiphany Messenger, who are undergoing the experiences outlined above from E-15, are in a position to more fully appreciate Brother Johnson’s faithful teaching on this Class. It is indeed a most pitiable condition for these brethren! But there is a brighter side – those who remain in the Lord’s Household will in due time seek to extricate themselves from Azazel’s clutches, at which time the Lord, as well as the faithful brethren, will gladly take them by the hand and assist, help and encourage them to a “better way.” Those who see their sins of teaching and practice, yet tacitly go along with them, are not to be commended – their course is not praiseworthy. “Know you, That he who turns back a sinner from his Path of Error will save his Soul from Death, and will cover a Multitude of Sins.” (Jas. 5:20, Dia.) We do not “rejoice in iniquity,” nor do we rejoice in the Unprofitable Servant’s “Gnashing of teeth... Sorrow, disappointment and chagrin in every sense” (Matt. 25:30 – See Berean Comment). However, these brethren still love the Lord, although rejecting His leadings and Headship. But when they “cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses” (Psa. 107:13), they, too, will rejoice in the Lord and will “rejoice in the Truth.” They will eventually “wash their robes, and make them white in the blood of the Lamb” (Rev. 7:14), and will be “before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple” (v. 15); and in this we will all rejoice that they have gained the victory, with palms in their hands. (See Rev. 7:9)

LETTERS OF GENERAL INTEREST

Dear Brother Hoefle:

My dear Brother, I have been receiving your monthly letters for a long time, and I want to thank you very much – and ask that you kindly continue sending them to me. I appreciate them very much. I would like for you to send the December 1970 letter on the Memoriam of Brother Russell – “That Servant” – and the June 1971 letter on The Bible, to Brother ------- I liked both of them very much.

Brother, I wish I could write you a letter. I have much I would like to talk to you about, but age is getting me down. You wouldn’t be able to make sense out of it. What I want now is for you to send these papers to Brother .------- I will write to him and tell him that I am having them sent. He, like myself, was in the colporteur work shortly after the turn of the century. He holds pretty much to the Jehovah’s Witnesses, but was thrown out by them many years ago. He and two other brothers stayed at my Mother’s home way back around 1910. My Mother brought me into the Truth when I was in my ‘teens.

I cannot go along with the Jehovah’s Witnesses either, but feel they are making many believers in Christ... I believe the Great Company are spirit-begotten, but he believes the Great Company will be human beings on this earth – just as the Jehovah’s Witnesses teach and believe now. I can’t go along with their ideas. Read 2 Tim. 4:2,3. Paul, of course, got a crown of glory, honor and immortality, but there are others who come through the “great tribulation” and get a crown of righteousness, which will be a passport into God’s Heavenly family. – (See Rev. 19:9 and Rev. 7:9)

Please use the enclosed for the good cause. May the Lord bless and keep you!

Your brother ------- (OHIO)

....................................................................

Dear Brother Hoefle: Grace and peace be multiplied!

You will have received our letter with names enclosed and our answer to your card by now. You probably are back from the Labor Day Convention by now. We await your report, dear Brother Hoefle. Our prayers were with you both as you attended, and we feel assured the Lord will bless your ministry, which we think is very noble. God bless you as you continue to expose the errors as they constantly keep cropping up and we know the Lord is with you as you continue to serve the brethren, and in holding fast to the faith “once delivered unto the saints.” Let us stand fast in the liberty “wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bandage.” And again God bless you! Sister joins with me in sending you and all the dear ones at Mount Dora warm Christian love.

Your brother and sister ------- (NEW JERSEY)

In Jude, verse 3, Dia., the Apostle admonishes, “I had a necessity to write you, exhorting you to earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered to the saints.” In this time, when Combinationism is rampant on all hands, here is some Scripture that receives little or no attention – even from some who claim to understand its real import. At the outset it is well that we remember that faith has three meanings in the Bible – first, it is what we believe (the Truth), second, it is the quality by which we believe (mental appreciation and heart’s reliance upon God and Christ), and, third, it is faithfulness. When St. Jude tells us to “contend for the faith,” he is referring to the first meaning of the word; namely, contend for the Truth. This is in keeping with the Manna comment for Sept. 23: “Our good fight of faith consists in a considerable measure in our defense of the Word of God.... This will mean our willingness to stand for the Truth at any cost and against any number of assailants... As the Apostle again says, ‘I am set for the defense of the Gospel.’ We can do no less than defend the Truth. The Truth is God’s representative, Christ’s representative, and hence our standard, and as true soldiers we must defend our standard, even unto death.”

There is a slogan common among men, He who fights and runs away lives to fight another day; but this certainly can have no embrace from those who “earnestly contend for the faith.” This is confirmed by the Apostle Paul in Phil. 1:17, Dia., “I am placed for the defense of the glad tidings” – in much the same manner as “God has placed the members each one of them in the Body.” (I Cor. 12:18) Both of these texts draw good comparison to a sentinel on guard in an army – he is set there to admit all the eligibles, just as he is also set to intercept all the ineligibles. Once this matter is clearly discerned, it will then become readily apparent how wrong are those who have decided they will have no controversy. Certainly, their stand has no support whatever in the Scripture: in fact, it is a direct contradiction of Scripture.

Sometime back, one who would be a teacher in the Lord’s House made the foolish observation that only error needs defense; the Truth can defend itself. From the foregoing, it is clear enough that the two Apostles and That Servant held just the reverse position. Those of us who are acquainted with the facts know that Brother Russell was inherently a gentle man – a man of peace; yet a large part of his ministry was spent in controversy – just as the Prince of Peace spent most of His earthly sojourn in warring for the Truth and the principles it embraced. Eventually, when His Kingdom is established, He will in all truth be the Prince of Peace. He will then establish a peace among men the likes of which they do not now comprehend. Thus, if we become involved in controversy, we, too, may contemplate a better day when there “will be no night there” – no error to cause controversy. But that time is not yet. David in his wars typed Brother Russell in his wars; and the Scriptures tell us definitely that David was a man of war – so much so that the Lord would not allow him to build the temple (the Lord’s house), but that honor was reserved for Solomon, whose name is the Hebrew for peace. So also, the Greater Solomon will eventually speak “peace” to the people, but that day is still future.

In 2 Tim. 4:6-8, Dia., St. Paul is in effect giving his own burial eulogy: “The time for my dissolution has come near. I have maintained the good contest. I have finished the race, I have guarded the faith” – the Truth, that which had motivated him during the years of His Apostleship. He had been well imbued with the understanding that God had placed him in the Body for that very purpose; and he had practiced what he preached, “steadfast, unlovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord.” (1 Cor. 15:58)

STUDY TO SHOW THYSELF APPROVED

Before one can teach others – defend the Truth – he must himself first be taught. It is well given that the big difference between the professors and the students is that the professors have read the books first. Thus, St. Paul counsels, “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed.” Brother Russell also recognized the force of this counsel, as shown by the December 20 Manna comments: “Only the studious find the narrow way to the Divine approval and acceptance.... study the doctrine (the Truth—JJH); study your course of conduct to keep it in harmony with the doctrine... Study to perform the duties of a faithful soldier of the cross.”

It is a sage observation that the average man is as lazy as he can afford to be; and this is more pointedly true of the Mind than of the body. Like trees, human beings die in the top first; we often see people whose bodies still have some semblance of life, but whose minds have flitted off into space. And we see Christians on every hand whose faith (mental appreciation) has been considerably blurred by the ravages of time. Thus, we have St. Peter’s statement, “I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth.” (2 Pet. 1:12)

According to the Information that comes to us, Bible studies are conducted among some Truth groups where a half dozen different answers are given to the same question, at least five of which may be wrong. Yet there is no correction by the leader; each is permitted to believe any answer that suits him. Viewed from any standpoint, this is certainly Babylon, and comes well within the scope of St. Paul’s statement, “Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.” (2 Tim. 3:7) At the other extreme, we find some leaders who are ever striving to produce some new and different answers to those furnished by Brother Russell – just to be different. And of such Bro. Russell makes some pointed comment:

“The church has been responsible in considerable measure for the stumbling of those whom it has recognized as elder-brothers and teachers. While they should not think evil, or surmise arrogance, they should be so wakeful to their own duties toward these brethren that they would not unduly flatter them, nor unduly encourage them, nor stimulate them to manufacture new light (such as justification in the Camp, a consecrated class in the Camp in the same location as is occupied by the rebellious nominal church—JJH).

“On the contrary, all who are spiritual should be helpful to those elder-brothers; should compliment them on their loyalty to the Lord, and to the old, old story, rather than commend them for fanciful fictions, or encourage them further along such lines. The Gospel of Grace has not changed (nor have the fundamentals of Harvest Present Truth—JJH); it is still the old, old story; it still includes the thought of our calling and election by faithfulness to the terms laid down in the Scriptures. The brethren should be encouraged along these lines rather than along the lines of manufacturing types by guess-work without any authority of the Word of God (such as the Hill Ophel typing Campers Consecrated, which also finds no support whatever in any Scripture—JJH).”

ERROR AND TRUTH AS TESTS

The question logically arises, Why should the Lord allow such vagaries among His people? Many are perplexed by this question, yet the answer is conveniently simple, when seen in the proper light. It is well stated in Micah 5:5,6: “When the Assyrian (the errorists) shall come into our land (the sphere of the Truth and its spirit): and when he shall tread in our palaces (by attempting to overthrow fundamental doctrines, such as justification outside the Court in this faith Age, etc.), then shall we raise against him seven shepherds (competent teachers who shall watch over your souls as they that must give an account).” And such faithful teachers “shall waste the land of Assyria with the sword (bring against the errorists sharp cutting truths – “the word of God, quick and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword”—Heb. 4:12)... thus shall He deliver us from the Assyrian (the errorists), when he cometh into our land, and when he treadeth within our borders.” Here is one more pointed Scripture that approves of controversy on various occasions. Jesus Himself established the law for us for this Gospel Age: “Think not that I am come to send forth Peace on this land; I am come not to send Peace, but War. For my coming will set a Man against his Father, and a Daughter against her Mother, and a Daughter-in-law against her Mother-in-law; so that a man’s enemies will be found in his own family.” (Matt. 10:34-36) It is an inescapable duty of those who would be “faithful to the Lord, the Truth and the brethren.” And to such the Lord’s promise is sure: “And it will turn out to you for a Testimony... for I will give you Eloquence and Wisdom, which all your opponents will not be able to gainsay, or resist.... And you will be hated by all on account of my name.” (Luke 21:13-17, Dia.)

Especially has this promise been evident in both Harvests. Certainly, the Apostles and other teachers in the Jewish Harvest put to flight all opponents. And in the Gospel Age Harvest the same was also definitely true. This has been in keeping with the prophecy: “I will make thee a new sharp threshing instrument having teeth.” (Isa. 41:15) A threshing instrument is only for harvest purposes; and those familiar with the facts know that the Harvest Truth did have “teeth” in it. “Thou shalt thresh the mountains – kingdoms (by exposing the error of the Divine right of kings, etc.) – and beat them small (the Harvest message revealed how ridiculous were such claims, made them truly look “small”) .... thou shalt rejoice in the Lord, and shalt glory in the Holy One of Israel.” The teaching is clear that the elect, especially their teachers, will be victorious in the Harvest conflicts with error. “No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper” (Isa. 54: 17). Therefore, when we see any leaders being defeated in “contending for the faith,” we may know of a certainty that they were earnestly contending for error, and they suffered the defeat of errorists. Had they been fully faithful, the promise of victory against every weapon would have been theirs; and their lacks became clearly evident to all who witness their downfall – just as was true of King Saul in his defeat by the Philistines. In that conflict he typed the crown-lost leaders being completely defeated here in the end of the Age.

Upon receiving the Truth, which is in “the mouth sweet as honey” (Rev. 10:9, 10), many reach the mistaken conclusion that they have come to the end of all controversy, and have entered the Beulah land of rest and peace, never again to be disturbed. But not so! “Good soldiers” must ever be ready to do battle whenever and wherever occasion arises; and it is an experience common to all who have borne any part of the burden and heat of the day that “when the sons of God present themselves before the Lord, Satan comes also.” (Job 1:6) And he is not one to promote the peace and prosperity of Zion in any measure – although he often appears to be so with “words smoother than butter.” Rather, against the Kingdom and its establishment, and against any and all of the Elect, he is the avowed enemy – ready to cast a stone among them at every opportunity. Thus, they are his special targets – always pitting the “wheat” class against the “buckwheat” class; “the peace of God which passeth understanding” is anathema to him. Therefore, as soon as any of the Elect escape from the kingdom of darkness – from “the veil that is spread over all nations” (the veil of ignorance and superstition)—Isa. 25:7 – they should logically expect to be the special target of the Prince of Darkness; and experience has taught us all that this is certainly true. We need only consider the experience of Jesus Himself in Matt. 4:1-11, after His forty-day fast in the wilderness for confirmation of this conclusion.

It is well, however, to keep in mind that Satan is a master of deception, which is clearly illustrated in his trickery with Eve in the Garden. “The woman was deceived.” Hence, he does not blow a trumpet before him when he leads God’s people astray, even though war is in his heart. “The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart: his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords.” (Psa. 55:21) He is indeed the “wolf in sheep’s clothing” – the “angel of light” – the proclaimer of “advancing truth,” which always does away with the Truth already established. This is the clear record for the entire Gospel Age to those of us who are “established in the Present Truth.” And he readily downgrades those who oppose his errors. Jesus was grossly slandered by the “preachers” of His time, as “a glutton and a winebibber”; Martin Luther was the “heretic,” the renegade who got drunk (also a winebibber), the “sifter” who caused divisions, etc., by the words of the Man of Sin; the loving and lovable John Wesley was the “dissenter,” the nomadic preacher without a pulpit (to which he replied, “The world is my pulpit”); and Brother Russell was the “illiterate haberdasher,” the braying Balaam’s ass, etc.

But sad to say, many who would rest at ease upon their creed beds fell into the snare of the fowler, which is one of the evidences now, one of the “signs of the times,” that we are in “the evil day.” The Harvest siftings abundantly confirm this; and the sixth slaughter weapon of Revolutionism is everywhere rampant. One of the chief weapons of this sifting work is the cry, No more controversy; let us have peace! Instead of “spoiling” the Assyrian (the sifting errorists), they allow the Assyrian to spoil them.

THE PATH OF THE JUST

Those who continue to “fight the good fight” along the lines prescribed in the Bible continue to progress; whereas, “those who sleep” retrogress. Without activity in the study, practice and spread of “the good Word of God” there will not only be no progress, but there will be just the reverse. Thus, St. Peter (2 Pet. 3:18) exhorts us, “Grow in Grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus”; and Brother Russell states that it is impossible to do one without the other. And it follows, too, that when we see others introducing “strong delusions” in the Truth movement, it is our bounden duty to “raise up a standard against such.”

Often we hear the text quoted, “The path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.” (Prov. 4:18) Today many contend that this is an individual matter, with sufficient knowledge in the Six Volumes of Scripture Studies and other Parousia writings to accomplish this. This is only a half truth, and half truths are more misleading than whole errors. Accepting such a position, makes it easy to go to sleep. But note the direct contradiction to such a position in Parousia Vol. 1, p. 20: “Those who will turn away from the mere speculations of men, and devote time to searching the Scriptures, not excluding reason, which God invites us to use (Isa. 1:18), will find that a blessed bow of promise spans the heavens... For the child of God a lamp is provided which dispels from his pathway much of the darkness.... But it is only ‘the path of the just’ that ‘is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day’....... The class referred to is ‘Justified by faith’..... While it is true that the path of each individual believer is a shining one, yet the special application of this statement is to the just (justified) as a class.... The light will continue to increase beyond the present – unto the perfect day... illuminating as it becomes due!”

And to emphasize this statement we offer another comment from the 1912 WT Reprints 5035, under the caption, Light Shining More and More Unto The Perfect Day:

“It would not be becoming on our part to speak with positiveness of how much our Lord knew during His earthly ministry. For how could we know except as it was declared. He said that the times and seasons were not at that time known by any but ‘the Father only.’ We cannot doubt that He knows all on that subject now. And if our surmises are correct, we know more on that subject now than our lord did then.”

And by the same process of “reason” we can now say, we know more on some things today than did Brother Russell during his lifetime. Surely, none would dispute this self-evident truth, although this offers no occasion at all for ‘boasting’ over present possessions of Truth – nor was Brother Russell boasting when he stated, as quoted above, “we know more on that subject now than our Lord did then.”

STRONG DELUSIONS

Nevertheless, it is a fair and reasonable question, Why does the Lord permit the strong delusions and trials of this evil day, when they actually do overthrow the faith of many and severely test all? The Apostle Paul answers this question (2 Thes. 2:1012): “For this cause God shall send them (those who received not the love of the Truth that they might be saved) strong delusion, that they should believe a lie (such as no more controversy, the world on trial now before Armageddon – the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ teaching; justification outside the linen curtain of the Tabernacle Court, etc. – the teaching of the LHMM); that they might be condemned who believed not the Truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.” Note the added force to this text as it is given in the Diaglott: “God will send to them an energy of delusion, to their believing the falsehood; in order that all those may be judged who believed not the Truth, but approved the iniquity.” Plainly, then, we are told that God not only permits, but also desires, that the faith of His professed people should be severely tried. And if the thousands fall by these fiery darts of the enemy, it is because they are unworthy of the Truth not having received it in the love of it, much the same as “The spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him.” (1 Sam. 16:14)

Many indeed receive the Truth very much as a child receives a new toy. It is a curiosity, something new (like Grimm’s Fairy Tales when read for the first time), to be enjoyed for a season and then laid aside to be superseded by something else that temporarily pleases the fancy – some “sleight-of-hand” that may be produced by an aspiring leader. Then there are some who grasp the Truth as a cudgel wherewith to gain the honors of victory in arguments with opponents – they are overcome by the “knowledge that puffeth up.” It is a sound teaching that the Truth brings to its recipients “the peace of God which passeth understanding”; and such peace comes to one and all so long as they “receive the Truth in the love of it”; but such peace is not the peace of indifference, not the peace at any price, not the peace of cowardice when controversy appears.

The Truth does indeed make strange bedfellows – widely separated by race, nationality, education and other providential circumstances. Thus, we find some who are too aggressive – just as we find some that are not aggressive enough; but a proper application of the Truth and its spirit will eventually give to all “the spirit of a sound mind” – it will calm down the warmongers, and energize to battle those that would calmly permit the Truth stream to be polluted. St. James has properly stated the matter: “The wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable.” To those who would ignore this plain Scripture the Prophet Amos has some critical words: “Woe to them that are at ease (at peace with all men) in Zion... that lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their couches” (in languid indifference when errorists – the Assyrian – would muddy the clear pure Harvest Truth-stream)—Amos 6:1-4. Our Lord Himself says, “Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their father to the false prophets.” (Luke 6:25)

In this connection, That Servant has some more to say in the Sept. 1, 1916 Watch Tower, Reprint 5949:

“Let us remember, too, that God has promised to keep and guide the minds of those whose hearts are loyal and true to Him. We should therefore conclude that if the Lord is thrusting any one out of the light as unworthy of it, into the outer darkness of the world, if He is permitting unfaithful ones to be seduced by the great enemy, it is not our mission to follow them into the outer darkness by reading, conversation, etc. We are to remain with the Lord and those who are walking in the light, and seek others to take the places and crowns of those who now deny or ignore the precious blood of the covenant wherewith they were once sanctified. Neither are we to waste sympathy upon those who depart.”

Although we are not heart-examiners, God is; and, when He manifests one by permitting him to go into outer darkness – as is true of the “unprofitable servant” of Matt. 25:30 (see Berean Comment), then we can know of a surety that there was something wrong with the heart, with the character, of which we may have been unaware. But, when this does become apparent, then we have the indisputable evidence of the loss of God’s favor gauged by the depth of his departure into “outer darkness.”

Such conclusion would also be strengthened by the depth of the Holy Spirit in those observing the deflection. St. Peter clearly revealed that he had read the heart of Ananias – “Why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart?” (Acts 5:4) – and St. Paul corroborates this opinion: “The Word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” (Heb. 4:12) The word “discerner” in this text is from the Greek ‘kritikis,’ meaning critic or judge. It is found only once in the New Testament, and is derived from the Greek ‘krino’: it is closely related to the Greek ‘krisis,’ which is translated damnation in John 5:29, the real meaning of which is judgment. Jesus Himself substantiates this meaning in Matthew 7:15-16, Dia.: “Beware of false teachers... By their fruits you will discover them.” These words would be empty indeed were we unable to penetrate any deeper than the skin, although it is common fallacy among men to “look on the outward appearance,” which offers the warning that we should ever proceed very cautiously when attempting to “discern the thoughts and intents of the heart.” We are not to judge according to the faults and blemishes of the fallen man, but we are to judge (recognize) them according to their faithfulness to the Truth – or by their revolutionisms against the Truth and departure from that Truth they once received. It is the “Word of God” that manifests such people to us.

However, it is here timely to stress that all of the Lord’s followers have more or less faults and blemishes, but these failings are not to determine our opinion of them –their heart condition. There can be only one touchstone, and that is the Truth itself. Said Jesus, “Now ye are clean through the word (the Truth) which I have spoken unto you” (John 15-3); and this offers the ready conclusion that those who cast away the Word that once sanctified them are now become self-evidently unclean – not on the surface merely, but in the heart. Usually blemishes are apparent on the surface, and some are quick to conclude that such appearance is a gauge of the heart, but this is a mistake, and should certainly be avoided. “Not many wise men, not many mighty, not many noble, are called,” so it has always been easy to see the faults of the called ones; but it is definitely not the privilege of the called ones to parade the faults of other called ones – and this should hold true even if we see them losing the Truth – even though we may realize that there was something unworthy in their characters that caused them to lose the Truth that once sanctified them, something that caused the Lord to manifest them as such. All of us know that Brother Russell declined to attack the morals of the Roman priesthood; he allowed the Truth to manifest them and their errors.

Knowledge is not the primary gauge of Christian character, because all of the saints after Apostolic times – had more or less of error; yet they made their calling and election sure. However, That Servant taught that we should esteem most highly those whose zeal for the Truth actuated them to systematic and energetic study of the Word; especially so, those elders “who toil in word and teaching” (I Tim. 5:17). St. Paul says such should be “esteemed worthy of double honor,” because they are those who come within the scope of Psalms 42:1: “As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, 0 God.” Conversely, those who esteem the Truth lightly, merely to minister to their selfishness, or their ego, or for present advantage (“through covetousness with feigned words making merchandise of you”—2 Pet. 2:3), are unworthy of it; and it is God’s will that they should lose it. Therefore, “strong delusions” are sent, which “if it were possible, would deceive the very elect” – to separate the true from the false. In this Age of faith the Truth was not designed for the “slothful in business,” or for the wicked or avaricious.

St. Peter describes this latter evil very well in Acts 8:20-23: “Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God... Thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity.” Indeed, “Light (Truth) is sown for the righteous (those who receive it in a good and honest heart), and joy (the joys of the Truth and its spirit) for the upright in heart.” Some of us have wondered why our relatives or close friends did not receive the Truth gladly; but, when they did not receive it thus, we should conclude that they are not “of the Truth,” and should direct our efforts toward more responsive minds. “The Veil that is spread over all nations” has fostered many superstitions of wide variety; and over the centuries these vagaries have gripped the minds of many with compelling force. We are very well acquainted with a multi-millionaire who would not think of undertaking any kind of voyage on Friday; but no one would suspect him of such weakness unless they had become intimately acquainted with him. It is very unlikely that such a mind would be responsive to sound sober truth, nor would he be in favor of engaging in any controversy that would challenge his ludicrous flummery. Such a man would not be inclined to “earnestly contend for the faith.”

The faithful children of God embrace the Truth because they have a warm affinity for it; and they are most happy when they can minister it to other receptive hearts and minds. “His word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones,” which instantly prompts such to “earnestly contend for the faith” – to “preach the word in season and out of season” – in winsome presentation, or in sharp controversy whenever occasion demands. All such realize the unspeakable value of the Truth, they always give “thanks unto God for His unspeakable gift” His “inexpressible gift”—2 Cor. 9: 15, Dia. Such “buy the Truth, and sell it not” they sell it not for money or for “the praise of men.” This is what is meant by receiving the Truth into a good and honest heart. And to all such the promise is sure, “He shall give His angels (Messengers competent teachers well established in “the present truth”) charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.”

During this faith Age, the “angels” are usually well-instructed brethren who have studied to show themselves workmen approved of God, who rightly divide the Truth ( 2 Tim. 2:15), ever joyfully willing to feed the flock of God – or even some sister well established in present truth, who takes a motherly interest in the lambs of the flock. We may be certain that the Lord always provides for His own; and “great peace have they which love thy law, and nothing shall offend (stumble) them.” Thus, the one thing to which all the elect should first look is what they have received – and still hold – the Truth in the love of it. All who do this have, for Gospel-Age purposes, inherited goodly Canaan land, which means that they have acquired the Truth and the spirit of the Truth. This is what is meant by “continuing in My Word” – and “you shall know the Truth, and the Truth shall make you free.” Such belief of the Truth comes only through a real sanctification of the spirit – a complete setting apart to the Divine will and service. This will sometimes put us on the mountain top, as it also will often place us “in the valley of the shadow” – sometimes “sons of peace,” sometimes “good soldiers” able and willing “earnestly to contend for the faith.” The sufferings of our Lord were directly or indirectly caused from advocating unpopular truths and exposing popular errors – and if we would be faithful we “ought also so to walk, even as he walked.” (1 John 2:6)

We should not expect to see all in any ecclesia thus fortified, and we must make due allowance for “growth in Grace and in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus”; but God has provided His angels (messengers) to accomplish this in all whose “Mind is stayed on thee” – “for the complete qualification of the saints for the work of service.... till we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a full grown man,... so that we be infants no longer, tossed and whirled about with every wind of that teaching which is in the trickery of men.... but being truthful in love, grow up in all things into him.... according to the proportionate energy of each single part of the Body.” (Eph. 4:12-16, Dia.)

Sincerely your brother,

John J. Hoefle, Pilgrim

NO. 195: THE MAY-JUNE PRESENT TRUTH

by Epiphany Bible Students

No. 195

Despite Brother Johnson’s repeated and emphatic remonstrances against “gazing,” RGJ continues to “gaze,” his latest performance being found on pages 37-41 of the May-June Present Truth. In view of the disastrous “gazing” he did in the Parousia – as recorded in the Nov. 15, 1910 Watch Tower – and in view of his 27 “mis”-calculations as recorded on pp. 7-14 of the Jan. 1, 1947 Present Truth (in which he also produced corroborative ‘proof’ from the pyramid that the last saint would be with us until Oct. 1956), it would seem he should have had more than enough of “gazing.” But not so! When 1950 indisputably demolished his “house of sand” on the 1956 dates, he immediately produced a new set of figures from the pyramid to substantiate 1950 for the last saint gone – although that date is to be found nowhere in the Bible, which should have deterred him from attempting to shackle on his readers something from the “Witness” as though it were a Bible teaching. It seems that “gazing” (making pictures and types) is one of his besetting sins; and we would strongly urge him to take heed to the words of the Apostle Paul: “Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us” and continue in his class standing. It is a fearful thing to offer “strange fire” before the Lord – admitting as he does that he has been ejected from the Holy. We write this in the fervent hope that he will speedily recover himself from this “besetting sin.”

Comes now some more on “The Nethinim” to ‘prove’ his Campers Consecrated, along with which he mixes his “gazing” on the half tribe of Manasseh and the hill Ophel, which will now have our consideration. He reiterates his “gazing” that the “half tribe that had its inheritance west of the Jordan types the Consecrated Epiphany Campers,” although the ONLY proof he offers for this is that they had the same name as the other half of the Tribe east of Jordan – a very meager foundation upon which to build any type. It has been emphasized in Epiphany writings that type and antitype must correspond in every detail, so we ask – Just what is there in the type that corresponds to his antitype? Let us keep in mind that the half tribe west of Jordan did not even have territorial connection with the half tribe east of Jordan. Nor did those west of Jordan have one iota of position or inheritance over the other nine tribes about them. As has been stated in Epiphany writings, the tribes of Reuben, Gad and one-half of Manasseh east of Jordan type the Elect – The Little Flock, the Great Company and the Youthful Worthies. And there is plenty of substance in antitype to prove this.

But we find just the reverse to be clearly proven from Scripture regarding his “gazing” type west of Jordan. Note Josh. 17:12: “The children of Manasseh could not drive out the inhabitants of those cities; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.” Here is a clear description of Gospel-Age crown-losers – the measurably faithful, because they do not overcame their enemies. Yet, in spite of this clear rebuke, RGJ says his Campers Consecrated non-existent class is as fully faithful as the Youthful Worthies You can’t tell the difference unless you ask them what date they first accepted Present Truth. He makes this statement despite the fact that both Brothers Russell and Johnson taught that there is a very clear demarcation between the world of mankind and the Household of Faith – between Restitutionists and the Elect. And let us not forget that Brother Johnson made no such distinction for the half tribe west of Jordan. He said the half was to be taken for the whole, thus giving ten tribes of Israelites as typical of all restitutionists – ten being the number of classes lower than the Divine.

At the top of p. 38, col. 2, he again emphasizes the fall of 1954 for the end of the Epiphany period in its “restricted sense,” although he has not produced anything from the writings of the Epiphany Messenger to support him. This also is just some more of his “gazing.” As Brother Johnson said of some of his kinsmen earlier in the Epiphany, they repeat, repeat, repeat in brazen parrot-like manner – thus hoping to recruit some of the unstable and the unlearned to their cause.

And in that same paragraph he offers this: “In the fall of 1954 those tentatively justified ones who had not consecrated ceased to be tentative Levites, in the Court; and since then those among them who have continued to believe in Jesus as their Savior and to practice righteousness have their standing in the Camp as tentatively justified ones. There they have been joined since the Fall of 1954 by many newly tentatively justified.” Brother Johnson has unequivocally stated that all who are forced from the Court here in the end of the Age lose their tentative justification, calling them merely “faith justified.” And he had good reason for this: There can be no justification outside the linen curtain of Christ. They must wait for their due time – wait until the New Covenant is inaugurated and the Highway of Holiness opened up for them.

But the most revolting babel of this statement lies in the words: “Many newly tentatively justified” since 1954. Just how “many” has he won since 1954? Or, is he now referring to Billy Graham? Regardless of that, he repeatedly relies on the explanation of Rev. 22:10,11, as given on p. 114 of E. Vol. 10; and that tells us: “After 1954 no more persons will enter the tentatively justified state.” It seems it doesn’t bother him at all if he contradicts himself, as he joins hands with That Evil Servant in presenting a non-existent class here in the end of the Age. When the latter offered such a class, that should have put us all on immediate guard to look for the error in it, because he offered not one scintilla of ‘new light’; rather, he perverted or rejected completely every important feature of Harvest Truth – just as the Pope in Big Babylon has done with the Truth over the years. This one thought alone should have sobered RGJ before plunging into such bedlam; but, having been abandoned to Azazel in 1950 – as was JFR in 1917 – by the complete removal of the restraining hand of the Priesthood, we should expect much the same performance by him on any ‘new light’ he attempts to present.

In previous papers we have emphasized our full agreement with the interpretation of Rev. 22:10,11, as given in E-10:114; but we have also stressed that time itself has revealed that the time setting for the application of the text was wrong. In this connection, even Brother Johnson himself has warned us about being too positive about 1954, as note the following from E-4:52:

“Some years after the fall of 1956, when the probable lapping of the Epiphany into the Basileia will likely be ended. (Even RGJ admits that the lapping did not end in 1956—JJH) It will thus be seen that on some phases of this subject we cannot as yet speak with positive assurance.”

However, now that 1956 is fifteen years behind us, we certainly can speak with positive assurance on the fact that much of what was expected then did not occur. Yet RGJ proceeds just as though it had occurred – much the same as an intoxicated man is certain he can see two lamp posts, when only one is there. “They that be drunken are drunken in the night” – the Epiphany night.

THE HILL OPHEL

RGJ has now also added the Hill Ophel to his “gazing” technique, claiming that It also types his Campers Consecrated; but the fundamentals of the situation also clearly refute him here, too. At the time of David and Solomon the City of David (Jerusalem) was surrounded by a wall these two rulers erected; and this wall definitely restricted the City to include only Zion, Moriah and Ophel, and the southern portion of the Tyropoeon Valley. A second wall eventually included the Hill Acra; but Mount Bezetha did not come within the scope of the City until after Christ, being completed not long before the overthrow of the city in the year 70 AD. by Roman Emperor Titus. This is in full harmony with the truth that the Youthful Worthies (typed by Bezetha) are the last elect class to appear during the Faith Ages.

In a previous paper we stated that the Hill Ophel typified the Jews if it has any typical significance at all; and this conclusion is confirmed by the original terrain of the city as it emerged through the efforts of David and Solomon – at which time the Jewish nation reached the pinnacle of its Old Testament glory. With Zion typing the Elect Little Flock, Moriah the Ancient Worthies, the only other application of Ophel would be to the Jews, because they were the only ones there during David’s reign. The Ancient Worthies had already been there through Abraham; and the Christ Company were there anticipatorially as a part of the coming Massiah through the line of David. “He hath chosen us in Him before the foundation of the world.” (Eph. 1:4)

St. Paul tells us in Rom. 1:16 that “salvation is to the Jew first”; and all Truth people accepted this application throughout the Parousia. It is only since 1916 that some have attempted to change this – the two principal perverters being the Jehovah’s Witnesses and RGJ. Both of these now claim their non-existent hybrids will supersede the Jews in the salvation process; thus, RGJ is in real good company indeed when he joins hands with the Jehovah’s Witnesses in perverting this outstanding truth – all in order to substantiate his “gazing” invention of a new class outside the linen curtain of Christ’s righteousness in a Faith Age.

It should be recalled that much stress was placed in 1954 about the Truth people then starting the work of filling the Epiphany Camp with RGJ’s newly-invented class; but this feature of the ‘plan’ is not mentioned any longer because of the miserable failure of the efforts to accomplish this program. And we mention once more Brother Johnson’s teaching on this subject:

“The Epiphany Camp in the finished picture (have we yet reached the ‘finished picture’?—JJH) is the condition of the truly repentant and believing, but not consecrated Jews and Gentiles” (E-10:209).

There is also at least one other hill in the city proper – the Hill of Evil – south of the Valley of Hinnom and directly opposite Mount Zion, where Judas is said to have bargained for the betrayal of his Lord. Upon this slope is the traditional Aceldama, “the field of blood.” RGJ should have some antitype for this hill, too, if he has one for the Hill Ophel. Of course, Brother Johnson knew about these hills when he wrote that the four peaks – Zion, Moriah, Acre and Bezetha – typed the four elect classes, with the elevations (such as the two hills just mentioned) typing the quasi-elect, while the lower levels typed the restitutionists in general. We accept his explanation, as we allow others to follow the Jehovah’s Witnesses and RGJ.

Of all the groups emanating from the Harvest Truth Movement we know of only two who downgrade the Jews in their Kingdom standing – only two who claim their newly-invented non-existent classes will have precedence over the Jews – these two being the Jehovah’s Witnesses with their “great multitude” and RGJ in the laymen’s Home Missionary Movement with his Campers Consecrated. And they both do this in direct contradiction to the clear Scripture teachings and their interpretations by That Servant and the Epiphany Messenger. So far as we know, all the other prominent Truth groups still adhere to “the things they have been taught” on this subject regarding the Jews; It is little wonder, when we see such distortion of the Truth in our very midst, that St. James warns against these “sinners” and their “path of error” – crown-losers perverting the Truth—Jas. 5:20, Dia. (See Berean Comment) And we would consider it a dereliction of duty on our part should we not sound an appropriate warning to all who “have an ear to hear.”

Also entering into this discussion is the statement on p. 25 of the Berean Topical Index: “A type must not be used to teach a doctrine, but merely to illustrate one that is already taught in plain terms.” If we how ignore RGJ’s types – the half tribe of Manasseh and the Hill Ophel – as That Servant clearly states we should do in such cases, just what Scripture do we have to support Campers Consecrated? The answer very clearly is – NOTHING!

PILGRIM BROTHER W. H. BROWN

On p. 47 RGJ pursues further the attitude of Brother Brown on some errors that have emanated in the Present Truth since 1950 – says he is doing this “to defend his name against the false impression that is being circulated, which implies that he finally espoused errors that he had formerly rejected.” This apparently is aimed at us – in typical devious manner of a doubleminded man – implying that we have been guilty of falsehood in what we published in our February paper No. 188. For the record, we wish to say that so far as we know Brother Brown continued to believe Brother Johnson was the last saint, as he also continued to reject Campers Consecrated. We have a number of letters in our file that will support this. In our paper No. 188 we simply published what Brother Brown wrote us – and that shortly before his death – which letter we have in our file. We offer now a letter from the Brother dated Dec. 29, 1969, in which he is profuse in his apology for the letter RGJ published from him in 1969:

“My dear Brother Hoefle: Greetings in the precious name of Jesus our Lord! I am sending you just a few loving words for calling you a sifter. Now, all you say to me in your letter is right. I should have used other words, and not ‘sifter.’ So pardon me. I say, pardon from my heart. I am sorry I used that word. Jesus said forgive a brother 7 times 70 times – 490 times. So please forgive me. I read all that – very sorry. Pardon me! I am very sorry... I will not murmur nor repine at what the Lord’s providence may permit... I say, pardon me. It is only that slip I made. In closing, I am very, very sorry. Hymn 78, 205... Must close with love, and the New Year opened with love. Brother Johnson says, be sincere. Plenty love to dear Sister Hoefle and wishes for the New Year. Poem of Dawn 275 and 279. The Lord bless you! Poem 124; Heb. 13:20,21. Pray for me, as I do for you both. I remain to you both the same as I was in 1957. Bro. Brown, Pilgrim—2 Tim. 2:7.” (All emphasis by Brother Brown)

It will be noted the Brother mentions 1957, which was the year we first visited Jamaica at the invitation of Sister Condell and a number of other brethren in that locality. We have given details on that visit in other papers, so do not repeat them now. However, at that time Brother Brown was very warm and friendly – was so happy that he had lived to meet us personally. He told us then that he was persuaded he had lost his crown – had come to that conclusion even before Brother Johnson died, because he knew of flaws in his character unknown to others. We know from Scripture (Jas. 1:8) and from the writings of both Messengers, that all crown-losers are doubleminded, unstable in all their ways; but it causes us much sorrow now to emphasize this about a brother who is no longer here to answer for himself; and we assure our readers that we do so only because of the wretched tactics of RGJ to force the issue against a member of his own class standing. It has become a matter of self-defense with us.

We scrupulously try to adhere to the Truth as we have received it – and also to principles of the Truth – as we seek to serve the Lord, the Truth, and the Brethren in sincerity and in truth. Clearly enough, the self-contradictory letters to RGJ and to us make glaringly manifest a double mind – just as RGJ often has manifested (The Epiphany is the special period for manifesting persons, principles and things.) At one time the Brother wrote us that he was then writing to RGJ to tell him he could not accept Epiphany Campers Consecrated – that he could not accept such a doctrine, as there was no Scripture to support it. Whether he wrote that letter we do not know definitely; but RGJ should be able to tell us if he has such a letter in his file. Of course, we know from Brother Johnson’s writings that RGJ has a bad conscience, that his statements are often unreliable, and false-accusing, and must be regarded accordingly. Whether or not Brother Brown wrote the letter to RGJ, we do have a letter that he wrote to us at a later date, some of which was quoted in our No. 188, and which we reproduce here:

“I don’t teach Consecrated Epiphany Campers, as the Camp represents the world of mankind in sin and needing atonement, and desiring it. I see now the world of mankind must wait their ‘due time’ – must wait till the reign of Christ begins.... Again I say, he who distinguishes clearly teaches right.”

And we might add here that both RGJ and Brother Brown taught right to the general public as long as the Epiphany Messenger was with us. However, in view of Brother Brown’s advanced years (some claim he was 104 when he died), we make generous allowance for his instability, even as Brother Johnson did for R. G. Jolly when he was with us although it seems Brother Brown had the decency and morality to the last to admit a mistake when he was caught in one, and to follow the instructions of his Lord in such matters and we know the Lord will reward him accordingly. Thus, we still harbor fond and benevolent memories of Brother Brown; and we regretfully wish we might say as much for all other crown-losers in this Epiphany period. From the record he must have been one that lost his crown by the “skin of his teeth.”

THE LOST AND RESTORED DOMINION

In this same Present Truth is an article with the above caption; and on p. 36, col. 2, last par., is this statement:

“Mankind’s dominion over earth will not be fully restored to them by Christ until the end of the Millennial Age, after the ‘little season,’ when He will say to the righteous of mankind, ‘Come ye blessed of My Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.”

This statement is indeed the truth, a truth which we have repeatedly stressed – and proved from indisputable Scripture – a truth which RGJ strenuously disputed, embellished with his usual name-calling. It seems he is now accepting the truth we gave just as though he had never been in error on it. A Levite abandoned to Azazel is indeed a sad spectacle to behold!

However, on the same page, col. 1, par. 4, he gives this: “This restoration of the obedient of mankind will not be completed until at the end of Christ’s mediatorial reign, ‘for He must reign, till he hath put all enemies under His feet.’ Then He will deliver up the kingdom to God. (I Cor. 15:24-28).” Considering both of these statements together, it would seem RGJ is now teaching that the mediatorial reign will continue until the end of the Little Season. Will he make himself clear here?

“Blessed be that God of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenlies, by Christ.... which He caused to overflow towards us, in all wisdom and intelligence.. in order that we might be for a praise of His glory.... That the glorious Father may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the full knowledge of Him.... that you may know what is the glorious wealth of His inheritance among the saints.” (Eph. 1:3,8,12,17, Dia.)

Sincerely your brother,

John J. Hoefle , Pilgrim

QUESTION OF GENERAL INTEREST

QUESTION: – In Acts 1:7 Jesus said, “It is not for you to know the times or seasons which the Father appointed by His own authority,” – but in 1 Thes. 5:1 St. Paul said, “Concerning the times and the seasons, Brethren, you do not need to be written to; for yourselves know accurately.” How do we harmonize these seeming contradictions, and what is meant by “the times and seasons”?

ANSWER: – The statement by Jesus must be read in like manner as His statement in Matt. 24:36: “No one knows concerning that day and hour (when Jesus would return again, and the Kingdom be set up); no, not the angels of the Heavens, nor the Son, but the Father only.” At the time Jesus was speaking He truthfully declared that He did not know, but He does not say that He would never know; and subsequent Scripture clearly teaches that Jesus eventually did know, and that His faithful followers would also know. There is no point at all in giving prophecy if it is never to be understood; and even when it is understood by some, there is no indication that it would be understood by all. “Only the wise shall understand.”

The word ‘times’ in both texts is from the Greek chronos, and forms the root of our English word ‘chronology,’ which word means the science of assigning to dates their proper events. The word ‘seasons’ means a season, or due time. To gain a clear understanding of these expressions it is well to remember That Servant’s teaching that prophecy cannot be understood in detail until it has been fulfilled, or is in course of fulfillment. That being true, we come to the logical conclusion that God’s people can “know accurately” only those times and season that apply to their particular day. As instance, at the First Advent the Apostles and a very small select group recognized that Jesus was the Christ – although the great majority did not. Therefore, Jesus said of that majority, “Thou didst not know the season (kairos) of thy visitation.” (Luke 19:44—Dia.) And, while the Apostles and others did then know the “season of visitation,” they did not know clearly the times and seasons of the generations that followed them. Therefore, St. Paul said the Ransom for all would be “testified in due time”—1 Tim. 2:6.

In Noah’s day the times and seasons – of due Truth – predicted the coming flood, but the great majority understood not. And in the destruction of this “present evil world” Jesus said there would be a similar condition, “They understood not till the deluge came, and swept them all away.” However, those in the Parousia Truth Movement understood very clearly – many years before 1914 – what was coming – they knew the times and seasons pertinent to their own welfare. That Servant was acutely aware of this situation, as note his comments in Parousia Vol. 3, p. 124:

“While each of the time prophecies accomplishes a separate and distinct purpose, the central object of their united and harmonious testimony has been to mark, with definiteness and precision, by either direct or indirect evidence, or corroborative testimony, the date of our Lord’s second advent, and of the establishment of His Kingdom in the earth; and also to mark the various stages (the times and seasons—JJH) and means of its establishment, during the harvest period.”

Brother Russell also realized that a specific work would be due to be performed at each proper time and season: “The present is the time (written in 1890—JJH) for the sealing of the servants of God in their foreheads, before the storm of trouble bursts (Rev. 7:2,3)... before the night cometh and the door of opportunity to labor is shut.” (Par. Vol. 3, p. 211) But he also saw “through a glass darkly” a future “time and season.”

“After this (reaping) period the dark night of the world’s tribulation must find place... Observe that, when this night cometh, when the reapers must cease their labors; it will prove that this final work of the Gospel Age is accomplished.” (Par. 3, P. 211)

In Mal. 3:1-3 we find perhaps the clearest of Scripture concerning the time from 1874 to the end of Jacob’s Trouble, and in this we are told that “the Messenger of the Covenant” would during this time “sit as a refiner and purifier (polisher) of silver (the Truth): and He shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold (the Little Flock) and silver (the Great Company), that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness.” The Prophet tells us that this period is broadly divided into two periods: “The day of His coming” and “when He appeareth” (maketh manifest). The day of His coming was the forty-year period from 1874 to 1914, during which time the world in general knew almost nothing at all of what was going on. At that time “The Messenger” did not “appear” to them.

But the situation changed acutely in 1914, when the great trouble started. The Messenger not only then proved His presence to the “Watchers,” but He began to be revealed to the world in general in the fires of that day. In July 1916 That Servant discussed this text, and we quote some of what he said:

“The Scriptures call this day ‘the day of the Lord,’ ‘the day of Jehovah,’ ‘that great and notable day,’ etc... This prophecy of our text is still in process of fulfillment.. Those who have been teaching errors will soon be ashamed, while the fire of this day will only manifest the Truth to all... The Apostle Paul in his writings lays special emphasis upon the fundamental importance of correct doctrinal teaching.... This day means the shaking of society in a manner and to an extent never before known (as is now in process—JJH), and as thoroughly that another shaking will never be necessary... The hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies (Hail, hard cutting truths—JJH)... and only God’s truly consecrated church would be in the light (in Present Truth—JJH) and not be taken unawares.”

From this it should be clear enough that the leaders among God’s people should “earnestly contend for the faith” (the Truth) to the full extent of their ability and providential circumstances; and should be fully informed as to “the times and seasons” and to “know accurately” the times and seasons in which we now are.

That That Servant could not foresee the length of this day is not to his disparagement. He clearly understood the times and seasons of his own lifetime, and spoke in generalities of what has followed since his death; but the details and the length of time he could not see. However, this does not mean that we who now live cannot see them; in fact, it is our special privilege to see them very clearly. Yet here again we do well not to attempt to speak too emphatically about the years ahead – when the special times and seasons of future years will speak for themselves – just as clearly as we see present happenings.

That Servant was definite in his teaching that the Epiphaneia, or Apokalypsis, would be synonymous with the time of trouble – the day in which we now are. And in the quotation given above on Mal. 3:1-3 he also stated that the Great Company would be specially revealed in this period, because their House “built upon the sand” would topple over as their erroneous teachings were graphically exposed. A text pointedly pertinent here is 2 Tim. 4:1: “Jesus Christ shall judge the quick and the dead at His appearing (epiphaneia) and kingdom (basileia).” Re-arranging just a little – Jesus shall judge the quick at His epiphaneia, and the dead at His basileia.

There is no dispute at all among the various Truth groups that the basileia (kingdom) is a period of time, though many of them declare that the epiphaneia is not a period of time. However, by analagous reasoning, if the basileia is a period, it would self-evidently follow that the epiphaneia must also be a period of time; and St. Paul says that in the epiphaneia judgment day the “quick” would be judged. These “quick” would be the fallen angels, who have never been under the death sentence, plus the new creatures in Christ “you hath He quickened.” Crown-losers have been judged all during the Age as individuals perhaps millions of them; but they could not be judged as a class until here in the end of the Age, when there was a clear cleavage between them and the Fully Faithful. This Epiphany, then, is their judgment day as a class. “He shall purify the sons of Levi” when “the Messenger shall suddenly come to His temple” at His coming and manifestation—Mal. 3:1-3; and we have been witness to these “times and seasons” (the chronos and the kairos) since the antitypical fire and brimstone began to fall upon “the great city, which is called spiritually Sodom and Egypt, where also the Lord was crucified.” (Rev. 11:8) And these “times and seasons” will continue to a completion – until all has been accomplished that they are destined to accomplish.

Another feature of the “times and season” of this Epiphany period is to be the destruction of the Man of Sin – “whom the Lord Jesus will consume with the breath of His mouth, and annihilate by the appearing (epiphaneia) of His presence (parousia)”—2 Thes. 2:8. So long as the Man of Sin continues to flourish we may be certain that the Epiphany is still with us, because he is to be annihilated during that period; he is to be annihilated by the epiphaneia of His parousia. This judgment of the quick, and the destruction of the Man of Sin during these epiphany “times and season” seem to attract little notice from many of the Truth groups; and even those who once claimed to be informed on these “times and seasons” have now lost a considerable part of their understanding on them. Some of them claim the Epiphany is already completely behind us, while others say that it ended in a “restricted sense” in 1954 – despite the clear fact that the Man of Sin is still with us, and despite the fact that the three major items of the Time of Trouble are also still future.

The emphasized teaching of That Servant is that the epiphany and the apokalypse, as an act and as a period of time, are synonymous; and they are also synonymous with the Time of Trouble. Thus, to declare that the Epiphany in any sense at all ended in 1954 is a direct contradiction of that teaching, as it forces us to conclude that the Time of Trouble also ended in a “restricted sense” at that time; whereas, “the nations as the vessels of a potter shall be broken to shivers” (Rev. 2:27) is an act still future. Never before has the Apostle’s counsel been more timely – “rightly dividing the word of Truth.” But if we follow his advice, then “you yourselves know accurately... When they may say, Peace and Safety, then sudden destruction impends over them... and they shall by no means escape.” (1 Thes. 5:1-3)

NO. 194: GOD'S KINGDOM SINCE 1914

by Epiphany Bible Students

No. 194

In the Watch Tower of October 15, 1966 (pp. 613-626) The Jehovah’s Witnesses present an article titled What Has God’s Kingdom Been Doing Since 1914; and, since we ourselves being intimately familiar with the events that have occurred since that date, we believe our readers will welcome an analysis – a presentation of Fact against Fiction. In their treatise the Witnesses stress the year 1914 as the time for the establishment of God’s Kingdom on earth – with themselves as the earthly visible representatives of that Kingdom. That 1914 is a very marked date in human history needs no argument; nor is any argument necessary for informed Bible students that that year is also clearly set forth in Old and New Testament prophecy. Clearly enough, then we have no objection to the date itself; it is then only with the events that occurred in 1914 and since – and their Biblical and secular significance that we part company with the Witnesses’ expressions.

Let us first consider Mal. 4:5, 6: “Behold, I will send you Elijah the Prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord: And He shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.” These are the last words of Old Testament Holy Writ; and for centuries that have intervened the Jews have given a literal interpretation to the prophecy – so much so that many of them to this day have a vacant chair at their Passover table each year, for the use of Elijah – just in case he should make unexpected appearance. But a critical examination of Matt. 11:14 will reveal clearly enough that Jesus interpreted Elijah as a type of the Gospel-Age Christ Company, which, coupled with the Malachi text, sets him forth as a type with specific purpose – namely, Elijah prefigured the Gospel-Age Church in its endeavors to reform “this present evil world” – to reform the irreformable – which task has never yet been accomplished.

In discussing John the Baptist, and his status, Jesus had said of him: “If ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was to come.” The American Revised Version gives the text like this: “This (one, John the Baptist) is (represents) Elijah that is (literally, the one being about) to come.” And what John did then on a small scale for Israel in preparing “the way of the Lord” for Israel makes him an antitype of EliJah. Note now Matt. 17:12, 13: “Elias is come already, and they knew him not... Likewise shall also the Son of Man suffer of them. Then the Disciples understood that He spake unto them of John the Baptist.” And, since John antityped Elijah announcing Jesus at His first Advent, so the Gospel-Age Church would antitype Elijah in much greater degree in announcing Jesus at His second Advent in power and great glory.

Jesus having so clearly marked Elijah as a type, we are now justified in studying the events in Elijah’s life for helpful information concerning the antitype. In 1 Kgs. 19:8 it is stated that “he did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the Mount of God.” In Heb. 12:18-20 St. Paul very clearly declares that Horeb (or Sinai) was a type of the greater mountain (kingdom), which would be the answer to the prayer: “Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done an earth, as it is in Heaven.” And Elijah’s going “forty days” in the strength of the food he received would antitype the Greater Elijah (the Gospel-Age Church) going forty antitypical days (or forty years) from 1874 to 1914 – when, for the first time in Gospel Age history “the stone cut out of the mountain without hands” (Dan. 2:45) was collectively and individually sufficiently complete to begin to “break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms.” The end of the Gentile Times had been reached, and their eviction was then immediately begun. This is in exact harmony with Brother Russell’s teaching on the subject.

SINCE 1914 - A SECOND COUNTERFEIT KINGDOM

The foregoing is probably not too much at variance with what the Witnesses themselves believe of the situation up to 1914; but we shall now examine some of the happenings since that time. One of the first major undertakings of the Witnesses after the death of Pastor Russell in October 1916 was the publication in 1917 of Volume VII of Studies in the Scriptures – under the name of the International Bible Students Association, Watch Tower Bible & Tract Society, as they were then known. That Volume 7 was also titled “The Finished Mystery,” was hailed as the seventh vial fulfillment of Rev. 16: 17; and certain statements in that book concerning patriotism, etc., were construed by the United States Government as a decided interference with their prosecution of the war against the Central Powers, resulting in eight of the organization’s leaders being sent to Atlanta Penitentiary in 1918 (from which they were subsequently pardoned in 1919).

Shortly after their release from durance vile, a sharp and widespread controversy arose among the former adherents of Brother Russell over the chronology which he had produced from the Scriptures; and the leaders of the Society made valiant, correct and commendable defense against those who were attempting to find the chronology wrong by some nineteen years. Both Volume 7 and the chronology were made tests of fellowship; and an extensive division resulted. Many were disfellowshiped because they could not accept the multitudinous errors in Volume 7, and others were disfellowshiped because they wished to reject the true chronology as given by Brother Russell. But it was only a few years until the Witnesses themselves forsook the true chronology, and rejected their own Vol. 7 so much so with the latter that it is now ‘Index Expurgatorious’ to their own members. This poses a timely question: If Volume 7 is wrong now, was it not equally wrong in 1917 when the uproar occurred concerning it? And, if they have been the visible Kingdom of God on earth since 1914, what explanation do they now offer for such a colossal blunder on the part of the Lord? “God is not the author of confusion.” Furthermore, if the chronology was right fifty years ago, it should still be right.  Mathematical calculations are the same - yesterday, today and forever!

SATAN CAST OUT OF HEAVEN

The article under discussion also proceeds to say that in 1914 Satan was cast out of Heaven, and “his angels were hurled down with him.” The account of the angels that sinned is discussed by the Apostle Peter, and we now quote it from Wilson’s Emphatic Diaglott translation (2 Pet. 2:4-6): “God did not spare the angels who sinned, but having confined them in Tartarus (translated ‘Hell’ in the King James version – from the Greek Tartaroo, meaning the thick murky atmosphere about this earth) with chains of thick darkness, delivered them over into custody for judgment; and did not spare the Old World, but kept in safety Noah, the eighth, a Herald of righteousness, bringing a deluge on the world of impious men; and condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, reducing them to ashes, making them an example for the impious hereafter.” It should be noted that all of this text is stated in the past tense – that it is a chronological narrative, giving the events in order of time. Thus, the first one mentioned is “the angels who sinned”; the second, the “deluge on a world of impious men”; and third, and final, Sodom and Gomorrah. Surely, this is clear evidence that the “angels who sinned” had been cast down to Tartaroo (confined to the atmosphere of this earth) even before the flood destroyed the ‘‘world that was.”

Further corroboration of Scriptural fact against the Witnesses’ Fiction is to be found in the performance of Jesus and the Apostles on numerous occasions casting out demons – evil spirits – fallen angels – Satan’s partners in the master crime of all Ages. Just a few such citations are: Matt. 4:24, 8:16; Mark 3:22; Luke 4:41 – 10:17; Acts 5:16 – 16:16-18 and 19:12, etc. Also, the words of Jesus, Luke 10:17, 19, Dia.: “The seventy returned with joy, saying, Lord, even the demons are subject to us by thy name. And He said to them, I saw the Adversary falling from Heaven like lightning.” Certainly, this is a clear statement by the Lord Himself that Satan had been cast out of Heaven before this Gospel Age had even begun. Also, 1 Pet. 5:8, Dia.: “Your opponent, the enemy (Satan), like a roaring lion, is walking about, seeking to devour.”  Who are the “Your” in this text? We answer, they are the people to whom St. Peter addressed his letter – “To the sojourners of the dispersion, of Pontus, Galatia,” etc.  It needs no argument that those Jewish “sojourners of the dispersion” were people here on earth, so it would be interesting to hear from the Witnesses how Satan walking about in Heaven could devour human beings here on earth. Or is this just some more of their fiction against fact?

But perhaps the most compelling of all argument against their fiction is our Lord’s prayer: “Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in Heaven.” Would any of us be foolish enough to contend that God’s will was being done in Heaven if Satan and his horde of hoodlums had been there “as a roaring lion,” seeking to devour? Yet the Witnesses now make great claim that their proclamation of these errors – this fiction – is the expression of God’s Kingdom on earth since 1914! And in all this they have been casting aside one truth after another since 1914 – truths for which they stoutly contended at least through 1916. Not only so, but they have been changing their own teachings with great rapidity year after year in distressing confusion – although the Scripture is very emphatic that “God is not the author of confusion” – that when His Kingdom is actually established on earth “the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein.” (Isa. 35:8) In spite of this clear promise, however, we believe it is a fair appraisal that the large majority of the Witnesses’ devoted, dedicated adherents do not now have a clear understanding even of what they themselves should believe – one strong reason for this being that, as one prominent official, their vice-president, put it some years ago: “We don’t believe this year what we did last year, and we probably won’t be believing next year what we believe this year.” Can such bedlam possibly be the “desire of all nations” which is promised to come when God’s Kingdom really begins to operate here on earth?

At this point it is in order also to call attention to another very radical change they have made in their teachings since they have been the “representatives of God’s Kingdom,” so we quote from p. 134 of The Finished Mystery:

“Instead of teaching that the saved of our race will all be saved to the same thing, the Scriptures show two degrees or kinds of Heavenly salvation (which is correct, and exactly as Pastor Russell taught it—JJH)... the Little Flock, who are to sit down with Christ in His Throne; the Great Company who are to stand before the Throne, having the palms of martyrdom but without the crowns of glory.

At present the Witnesses have made their “Great Company” of Rev. 7:9 a “large multitude” of human beings – their present dedicated devotees, who are to live right on through Armageddon and continue to live forever right here on earth – a complete reversal of what they received from Brother Russell, and which they enthusiastically taught some fifty years ago – after 1914 so our readers may determine for themselves which is fact and which is fiction in this extreme change they have made.

COMFORT FOR THE JEWS

Another complete reversal is their present teaching on the re-gathered Jews in Palestine to what it was forty years ago. In 1925 their then President J. F. Rutherford produced a new book – COMFORT FOR THE JEWS – and here is some of the comments to be found on the Frontispiece:

“JUDGE RUTHERFORD, known throughout the world as a friend of the Hebrew people, is vigorously supporting the claim of the Jews to the Holy Land... His lectures to large audiences, which have been broadcast throughout the world, on ‘JEWS RETURNING TO PALESTINE,’ have created an intense interest. This Volume is the first unbiased presentation of the subject from the Scriptural viewpoint published.”

Then an the next page is quoted Psa. 122:6: “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: They shall prosper that love thee.” All of this is correctly based upon the clear Scriptural declaration (Isa. 2:3), “Out of Zion (the Glorified Messiah and His Elect Bride, who are the primary seed of Abraham, who are to bless all nations—Gal. 3:8) shall go forth the Law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem” – which city will contain the true earthly ‘Princes’ (rulers – representatives) of the Kingdom. All of this is now categorically denied in the Watch Tower of October 115, 1966:

“The earthly Jerusalem has nothing to do with it,” they say; “Since Jesus was put to death on Calvary outside the walls of Jerusalem in the year 33 CE. that city has no connection with God’s Messianic Kingdom.”

After correctly discussing the dispersion and the terrible afflictions of the Jews all during this Gospel Age, the Judge then proceeds to say on p. 45 (also correctly):

“But is Israel cast off forever? The answer is No indeed. Mark the statement made by the Lord to Ezekiel at the time of pronouncing the final decree against them. It is: ‘I will overturn, overturn, overturn it; and it shall be no more until He come whose right it is; and I will give it Him’—Eze. 21:27 (Emphasis by the Judge). The mere fact that the Lord said He would overturn it until a set time, is conclusive proof that it is God’s purpose to restore Israel to His favor upon certain conditions. But when? The answer is, With the coming of Shiloh, the Messiah, to whom shall the gathering of the people be, as promised in Gen. 49:10. Then He of whom Moses was a type shall come into His own... That will mark the time when the favor of God may be expected to return to Israel.” (Book, Comfort For The Jews)

This clear and emphatic statement by the Judge is indeed the truth, and the Witnesses believed it to be the truth forty years ago; but THEY DON’T BELIEVE IT NOW – although they claimed to be witnessing to God’s Kingdom then, just as they claim to be doing so now. Thus, again the question: Were they teaching fiction then, or – are they teaching fiction now? To help our readers to arrive at the correct answer to this question, we now quote Zech. 14:1-3: “Behold, the day of the Lord cometh (the times of restitution spoken by the mouth of all the Holy Prophets—Acts 3:19-23), and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee. For I will gather all nations (Gog and Magog, the hosts of merciless plunderers of regathered Israel) against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city. Then shall the Lord go forth, and fight against those nations, as when He fought in the day of battle” – as He did for Joshua against the Amalekite kings at Gibeon (Josh. 10:1-14), as He fought for David against the Philistines at Baal-Perazim (2 Sam. 5:17-21), and as He miraculously delivered Israel from the hosts of Midian by Gideon and his band of 300 men, the Midianites and the Amalekites being “like grasshoppers for multitude; and their camels without number, as the sand by the seaside for multitude” (Judges 7:1-25). This miraculous help is to come to the Jews at Jerusalem In “the day of the Lord” (just before the real Mediatorial Kingdom is established at Jerusalem), clearly testifying that this delivery from their enemies is an event yet in the future.

A BRIEF RESUME

In the foregoing pages we have detailed only a few of the major reversals of teaching by the Witnesses over the past forty years. If we attempted to analyze all of their variations, it would probably require a good-sized book. Clearly enough, a great part of their ‘‘witnessing” could be nothing less than fiction – either then, or now – because they now teach just the reverse of what they did a few years back. For the benefit of our readers, we now offer some Scriptures which will help determine if their present-day witnessing is fact or fiction:

“When thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness” (Isa 26:9). Have the inhabitants of the earth really been learning righteousness by this somersaulting change in teachings with each succeeding year? “They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my Holy Mountain (Kingdom): for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, As the waters cover the sea” (Isa. 11:9). Which shall we consider “the knowledge of the Lord” – what the Witnesses gave us forty years ago, or what they are giving us now? And have men ceased to “hurt or destroy” as a result of their “knowledge,” or do we not see more hurting and destroying than ever before in human history?

All of this performance by the Witnesses is an identical twin to the Papacy claims during their false “kingdom” from 799 to 1799, when they also went from one error into another, freely excommunicating the ‘heretics’ who did not agree with them - just as the Witnesses also now do. And, as they now claim to be separating the Sheep from the Goats, so Papacy also claimed to be separating the saved from the damned – then, the same as now, offering false promises to the ‘faithful,’ and decreeing false punishments to the ‘unfaithful.’ And, also like the Papacy, they have been guilty of drastic mistranslation of the Scriptures to make them fit their present contentions.

Let us emphasize the very close similarity of the first counterfeit Kingdom of the Papacy in 799-1799 to the second counterfeit now being preached by the Witnesses.  Said the Papacy, If you do not accept us, you are lost – in eternal torment. Say the Witnesses, If you do not accept us, you are lost in unending death. Said the Papacy, We are the Vicar of Christ on earth, the infallible repository of God’s Word – no salvation outside of our domain. Say the Witnesses, We are the visible representatives of God’s Kingdom on earth since 1914, no salvation outside of us and the teachings we offer. And in both counterfeit kingdoms the teachings were repeatedly changed – diametrically contradicting previously-held beliefs, yet loudly proclaiming themselves to be the Mouthpiece of God on earth, while shouting anathema at all dissidents, excommunications for so much as a question against what comes from the “Channel.”

As That Servant has so aptly said, “When the Truth comes into conflict with error, when the Sword of the Spirit, wielded by some of the Lord’s simple followers, proves mighty in the overthrow of error – when the light of Present Truth, and the clearness in which it is presented, and the beauty in which it can be seen and appreciated, is contrasted with the error, the result is either that the Truth is seen in its beauty, or the erring one opposing it becomes more densely blinded than before.’’

And it Is a very pleasant observation that the Truth always deals much more generously with the errorists than do the errorists with those who have the Truth. During Brother Russell’s ministry the preachers of error all over Christendom were consigning him to “the hottest corner in Bell” – all the while he himself was allowing for them the “Gospel (good news) of the Kingdom” under the benign mediatorial reign of the Christ.  Likewise, the Scribes and the Pharisees were labeling Jesus as an emissary of “Beelzebub,” as He himself was predicting for them that they would “see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and all the prophets in the Kingdom of God” (Luke 13:28). So also the Papacy – during their counterfeit kingdom – not only sentenced the “heretics”  to eternal torment, but actually started the torment for many of them by splitting their  noses, pouring molten lead into their ears, tearing them apart limb from limb on the rack, while the recipients of their heinous torture were praying peace and forgiveness for their tormentors. In similar manner, the Witnesses now consign to everlasting extinction those who reject their errors although those of us who have the Truth allow for the deluded devotees of their “kingdom” a full opportunity to imbibe the “knowledge of the Lord” (the Truth) under benign real Kingdom conditions. Recently one of the Witnesses called at our residence, while we were absent, with intent to berate us. At the end of a courteous hearing, he said of us as he left the house, “He’s a dead man!” It is indeed a sad commentary that the tendency of errorists always seems to be to heap imprecations, excommunications (“make fire come down from Heaven in the sight of men”—Rev.  13:13) and revilings upon those who expose their errors — even while those with the Truth make generous allowance for those in error. All of the Heathen Gods are cruel Gods, as can be seen from their hideous portrayal on the totem poles and other idol constructions.

The Jehovah’s Witnesses claim Pastor Russell as their founder, but this is what he says about the true Kingdom in the very year of 1914 – a most forceful contradiction to their present claim that the appearance of their organization constitutes the visible Kingdom on earth:

“The Ancient Worthies (not their earthly organization!—JJH) will be the earthly representatives of the Messianic Kingdom (See the 11th chapter of Hebrews for a list of the names of some of these faithful Ancients—JJH).  The Christ, however, will be the great Teacher in glory, from whom all instructions will come through these earthly representatives. As people begin to get the true, the real knowledge about the glorious character of God, they will begin to see how inferior they are. Then (when ‘‘Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and all the prophets, are in the Kingdom” (in Jerusalem – Luke 13: 28—JJH) they will be in condition to receive instruction.” (See Reprint 5583, December 1, 1914) (The prophets were “holy men of God” – 2 Pet. 1:21 – so they will be “in the Kingdom”—JJH)

CONCERNING ARMAGEDDON

The Witnesses’ promise to their dedicated “Large Multitude” of life eternal through Armageddon and on through the Ages to come is also some more of their fiction – is also a complete reversal of their past teachings. We quote now from p. 3 of the Publisher’s Preface of The Finished Mystery:

“In the light of Divine Prophecy, now being daily fulfilled and made clear to ‘the watchers,’ the following from the pen of Pastor Russell is further proof that he was sent of God to this generation. Long years before the beginning of the trouble now upon the nations he wrote: ‘The four exhibitions of the Lord, given to Elijah, represent, we believe, four manifestations in which the Lord is about to reveal Himself to mankind, the first three of which will prepare man for the final one, in which will come the desired blessing to all the families of the earth. These are:

(1)        The mighty winds rending the very rocks. Blowing winds seem to be used in Scripture for wars...

(2)        An earthquake. Throughout the Scriptures an earthquake seems always to represent revolution...conditions which would follow such a war would make revolution the next thing in order.

(3)        The fire from Heaven – an epoch of Divine judgments and chastisements upon a maddened, but unconverted world, wild in anarchy, as other Scriptures show us. The results of their wars, revolutions and anarchy, in the failure of their schemes, will have a humbling effect, and will prepare mankind for God’s revelation of Himself in

(4)        The still small voice. Yes, He who spoke to the winds and the waves of Galilee will, in due time, speak peace to the peoples.”

The foregoing is now also repudiated by the Witnesses in some of its major parts, because it makes a shambles of their present claims and fictional hopes presented to their dedicated devotees; but, as we said in our January 1966 paper, Time itself is making them appear very ridiculous. In the Witnesses’ present feverish endeavors to separate the Sheep from the Goats, there is one determining question which should prove beyond the shadow of doubt to all unbiased minds if their present teaching is fact or fiction: IS SATAN NOW BOUND?

It is clearly stated in Rev. 20:1-3 that ‘‘An angel laid hold on that old Serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years. And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more.” Would any one of sound mind – or even the Witnesses themselves –contend that Satan is now bound? And, if he is not bound, then he must still be deceiving the nations. And, if the nations are being deceived, how can they possibly be held accountable for their deception? It is exactly the same as a sleight-of-hand performer tricking his audience by his manual manipulations.

Be it noted that the Papacy made exactly the same mistake in their counterfeit kingdom from 799 to 1799, when they also were separating the Sheep from the Goats –except that they now claim that Satan was indeed bound then – that he has been “loosed for a little season” since 1799. Thus, their counterfeit kingdom was an improvement in theory, at least – upon the present kingdom of the Witnesses. The Witnesses do not claim that Satan is bound – at least not yet have they made such claim. But perhaps we should give them time!

But for now let us keep in mind the promise of Rev. 21:3-4: “Behold, the Tabernacle of God is with men... and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain.” During the Papal counterfeit kingdom there was just the reverse of this great promise –violence, cruelty and oppression, prevailed in all quarters. And during the Witnesses’ kingdom since 1914 it is also evident that violence – “nation against nation” – is the prevailing order of the day. Judge Rutherford was wont to stress the “physical facts” in his lectures and writings forty years ago; therefore, we would now call upon the Witnesses to catalog the “physical facts” to prove that the benign Kingdom of God is now with us. However, we now place ourselves on record in predicting an even greater “Armageddon” delusion than was their “Millions Now Living Will Never Die” delusion before 1925.  “He that hath an ear to hear, let him hear.”

Let us consider also the promise, “They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain (Kingdom): for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord” (Isa. 11:9). Today we find just the reverse of this in the earth – ‘‘men’s hearts failing them for fear” – the violence of the atomic bombs, etc., is multifold greater than was the violence that filled the earth in the “world that was” (2 Pet. 3:6; Gen. 6:11) Also according to the Witnesses’ own contentions, the vast majority of religious teachers in the earth today are rank frauds – deceiving the people with error, instead of teaching them the “knowledge of the Lord.” But, when God’s true Kingdom is actually in operation in the earth, “they shall no more teach every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying Know the Lord: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them.” (Jer. 31:34) It should need no argument that millions upon millions of human beings today have not the mental capacity to recognize the truth when it is presented to them; that is why it is so easy for “grievous wolves” to prosper greatly today – something all should expect in this great “Time of Trouble.”

“Now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are set up; yea, they that tempt God are even delivered.” (Mal. 3:15) This is just the reverse of what we may expect when the true Kingdom of God is here – when “the Tabernacle of God is with men.” “Do you therefore, Beloved, being forewarned, be on your guard, lest being led away by the deceit of the lawless, you should fall from your own stability; but grow in favor and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” (2 Pet. 3:17, 18, Diaglott)

LETTERS OF GENERAL INTEREST

Dear Brother Hoefle:  Grace and peace!

Received yours of recent date, and as always glad to hear from you – and to hear you are having such nice weather. We can understand the pressure you are under at times with the work. We are sure that you are doing your best, and we do appreciate your service in the Lord – and agree that it is a wonderful privilege to serve the One who has done so much for us in opening our eyes of understanding to His great Plan of the Ages.  What a blessing! while so many groping in darkness.... I am glad to say Sister is coming along nicely, and she joins with me in sending you and all at Mount Dora our warm Christian love, and His rich blessing.

Your brother and sister ------- (NEW     JERSEY)

....................................................................

Dear Friends:

I enclose a very small check and express my great appreciation of the articles I have received from you. I look forward to them always. I am entirely isolated and a shut-in. My general health is better than it was for several years – but I am over 80 years old, and handicapped in several ways..... My eyes are much better than they were. I thank God I can read these messages now without help.

My special love to Sister ..... with whom I did colporteur work in 1912. God bless you and your work!

Sister ------- (OKLAHOMA)

Dear Brother Hoefle:

I have read your Extra Edition No. 11 re Persecution of Jehovah’s Witnesses In Africa. This topic hits the ailments of that sort of people right on the head. Would you please send me about 10 each of the free literature as marked: Nos. 1 through 10 – to 121? We are pretty well known among the local Witnesses, as they pester us every so often with their books, etc. They have just finished a new Kingdom Hall here in the City, and they have a large BLOW-OUT every so often here. So I would like to have this ammunition to hand to them when they come to pester me. They know that my father and mother were of Brother Russell’s organization, as some of them used to come here at this house to attend meetings when the various Pilgrims gave a talk. You see this place was a regular place for all the various brethren and Pilgrims to stop off... was always open for all of the Lord’s people in the days of Brother Russell. After he died in October 1916, everything changed – and every one seemed to be going in different directions; “The Shepherd its Smitten, and the sheep scattered.”

God bless you;  As ever,  Brother ------- (NEW YORK)

....................................................................

Gentlemen:

In this morning’s mail I received the article relative to the Bible, and found it very interesting. I am sure that the people who wrote the Bible received much of their information from the Holy Spirit of God..... I am enclosing an article I wrote entitled, “True Meaning of Christianity.” It explains my ideals of Christianity.....

Sincerely ------- (FLORIDA)

Dear Brother Hoefle:

I have noted previously one or two of your leaflets of particular interest, but have not been struck as much by them as this your latest No. 192 – The Bible. I am not aware how many issues you have sent here. I do not believe they have been coming long. How did you obtain my name and address?

This latest paper is a marvelous reference paper. Much has been said about the glass darkly Scripture – glass not having been manufactured then.... Each of these texts we can clarify will also aid others, I believe, to believe the inspired word (your p. 7, par. 2) May I please request several copies of these papers  The Bible – so I can share them with others. Please send me a bill for same as soon as possible.

Many thanks! Sister ------- CANADA)
