NO. 578 IN MEMORIAM

by Epiphany Bible Students

Recently a biography of Brother Russell has come into our possession; and we believe our readers will benefit from reading some of it.  The author does not give his name, so we cannot identify him, although he apparently is some one who was very close to That Servant.  The book was copyrighted in 1923.  We have tried to secure more copies of the book, but so far have failed.

We now quote from that book, and begin with some statements in the FOREWORD:  “Our motive has been to do Good, as God has given us to understand what that means; therefore, we have no further explanation to make or apology to offer; merely pleading that we have earnestly and consistently striven to absorb the Truth and the spirit of the Truth which was so beautifully exemplified in the life of the subject in this book - our beloved Brother Russell, who labored so hard and earnestly to teach us how to walk as Christians should. God bless his memory!

“The Bible is THE BOOK of books in every sense; first, there is no other book like it in the world - for it is God’s Book or Message to the human family; second, it is a Book of Books for the reason that it is made up of many books, or portions, by many writers - sixty-six divisions.

“In a complete and connected sense, this Book, though containing the Great Author’s Wonderful Plan of the Ages, was sealed to human understanding until our Lord’s PAROUSIA in 1874, when it was given him to ‘loose the seals,’ using a human instrument, ‘a chosen vessel,’ for this purpose.

“Charles Taze Russell was the one ‘chosen of God and faithful’ to this end; so he, under the Lord’s guidance, gave us ‘The Keys’ to the Scriptures - and to all sincere Christians these ‘Keys’ or Studies, have fulfilled the design of the author; for they have proved to be Helping Hands in the systematic study of the Bible.  This book - MEMOIRS - tells you something about how and under what difficulties ‘That Servant’ attained the desired end - something of the discouragements he met and the obstacles he overcame. It is important to ponder well the revealments herein given pertaining to the Life, Works and Character of one of the greatest men the world has ever known.”

Now to the book proper:  “Charles Taze Russell was born in Pittsburg, Pa., Feb. 16, 1852, of consecrated parents who were of Scotch-Irish descent…In private Pastor Russell admitted his belief that he had been chosen for the great work he had accomplished, as ‘that Servant,’ from before his birth… Up to the age of fifteen he believed as gospel truth all and only such doctrines as had been taught him… The clergy usually discouraged individual Bible research, and the asking of questions was considered equivalent to doubting, and to ‘doubt was to be dammed.’

“By skillful questions, which were unanswerable by either minister or laymen from their sectarian standpoints and by the maneuvering of many seemingly paradoxical Scriptures, an infidel completely routed young Russell, who within a few months became an admitted skeptic.

“At twenty-one Mr. Russell was possessed of much knowledge and voluminous data on religion as believed and practiced in all parts of the world.  Apparently these were to become of no value to himself or others, because of large business responsibilities that were placed upon him at the time.  The question that here confronted him was, ‘Shall I try longer to find the truth on religion?  Or, shall I smother the hope of finding it and strive for fame and fortune among the financial and commercial captains of the time?’  Fortunately, he decided first to search the Scriptures from a skeptic’s standpoint, for its own answer on hell-fire and brimstone.

“Amazed at the harmonious testimony, proving an unexpected but satisfactory answer, he undertook systematic Bible research and was brought to a complete confidence in the Bible as being inspired by an all-wise, powerful, just and loving Creator, worthy of adoration and worship.  Thus a sure anchor for a fainting hope was found, and an honest, truth-seeking heart was made glad.

“In 1877 Pastor Russell called a meeting of all the ministers of Allegheny and Pittsburgh, showed them the Scriptures which indicated our Lord’s presence and urged them to investigate and proclaim the message.  All the ministers of the two cities were present and all of the ministers of the two cities refused to believe.  In that same year he gave up his secular work to devote his entire time and fortune to the work indicated in the Scriptures as incident to the close of the Gospel Age and the change of Dispensations impending.  As a means of determining whether his purposed course was in harmony with the Scriptures, and also as a means of demonstrating his own sincerity, he decided to test the Lord’s approval, as follows:

“(1) Devote his life to the cause; (2) invest his private fortune (about $300,000) in the promulgation of the work; (3) prohibit collection at all meetings; (4) depend on unsolicited contributions (which must be wholly voluntary) to continue the work after his own fortune was exhausted.  Furthermore, in 1881 there were distributed free 1,400,000 copies of Food for Thinking Christians to the Protestant Churches in the United States, Canada and Great Britain, on three consecutive Sundays, by A.D.T. messenger boys.  This was said to have been at a cost of $40,000.00.

“Charles Taze Russell enjoyed the immeasurable advantages of good birth.  His parents were Christian people of marked intelligence and refinement.  His father was a successful retail merchant of Allegheny, Pa.  His mother died when he was about eight years of age, leaving him to be thereafter the boon companion of his father.  As such, he learned to keep the rooms in which the father and son lived, and developed the traits of neatness and precision so marked in after life.

“He began at a very early age to take great interest in his father’s store.  At the age of fifteen, so great was his sagacity as a wholesale buyer of merchandise that his father often sent him alone on purchasing tours to Philadelphia.  A young man of such com-mercial talents would not long be working for others.  He soon started a store of his own; this rapidly increased to a chain of stores. He was one of the pioneers in the development of the marvelously successful idea of the chain-stores, an idea which has since enriched many men.  His wealth increased by leaps and bounds.  This was in the early seventies of the nineteenth century.  Rockefeller was then unknown, nationally.  The known millionaires of that day could have been counted on one’s fingers.

“Still he yearned to know God; but the creeds of Christendom only confused him.  The young man began to see what all the theologians of the ages had failed to see - the harmony of the Word of God and the beauty of His plan.  At the age of twenty-four this young Bible student became aware of the time features of the Scriptures.  It was at this age that he began to see that the end of the Gospel Dispensation would be marked by a great world war.  It was the unfolding of these features of the truth that swept his earthly goods onto the altar of burnt-offering and took him out into the campaign of preaching which ended only with his death.

“One truth led logically to another, and made it possible for him to become recognized as the only theologian of the Gospel Age who had been able to demonstrate the harmony of the Bible with itself.  ‘Unto the Angel of the Church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true Witness’ (Rev. 3:14) - and the angel did as commanded, and long since ‘reported the matter.’ ‘Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season?  Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.  Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods.’ (Matt. 24:45,46,47) [We believe our Lord found Brother Russell “so doing” – diligently searching the Scriptures and made him That Servant.]

“Concerning the phenomenal work he did, we offer just a few short statements from him:  Many are the inquiries relative to the truths presented in my writings - whence they came and how were they developed to their present symmetrical and beautiful proportions… I claim nothing of superiority, nor of supernatural power, dignity or authority; nor do I desire to exalt myself in the estimation of my brethren of the Household of Faith, except in the sense the Master urged, saying, ‘Let him who would be great among you be your servant.’  And my position among men of the world and of the nominal church is certainly far from exalted, being ‘everywhere evil spoken against.’  I am fully contented, however, to wait for exaltation until the Lord’s due time… Presently overcoming many besetments, discouragements, etc., to press along the line toward the mark of our high calling, and claiming only, as a faithful student of the Word of God, to be an index finger, as I have previously expressed it, to help you trace for yourselves, on the sacred page, the Wonderful Plan of God - no less wonderful to me, than to you, dearly beloved sharers of my faith and joy.

“No, the truths I present, as God’s mouthpiece, were not revealed in visions or dreams, nor by God’s audible voice, nor all at once, but gradually, especially since 1870 and particularly since 1880. Neither is this clear unfolding of truth due to human ingenuity or acuteness of perception, but to the simple fact that God's due time has come; and if I did not speak, and no other agent could be found, the very stones would cry out... Nor can I name all the little points of Divine Favor in which faith was tested, prayers were answered, etc., remembering that our Master and the early Church left no such example of boasting faith, but rather admonished otherwise saying, 'Hast thou faith? have it to thyself!' Some of the most precious experiences of faith and prayer are those which are too sacred for public display...The Reformation movement, or rather movements, from then until now, have all done their share in bringing light out of darkness. Let me here confine myself to the consideration of the Harvest Truths as set forth in the Scriptures and the Watch Tower...

"I soon began to see that we were living somewhere near the close of the Gospel Age and near the time when the Lord had declared that the wise, the watching ones of His children, should understand - come to a clear knowledge of His Plan. At this time, myself and a few other truth-seekers in Pittsburgh, Pa., formed a class for Bible study and from 1870 to 1879 was a time of constant growth in grace and love of God and His Word. We came to see something of the love of God, how He had made provision for all mankind; how all must be awakened from the tomb in order that God's loving Plan might be testified to them.

"But though seeing that the Church was called to joint heirship with the Lord in the Millennial Kingdom, up to that time we had failed to see clearly the great distinction between the reward of the Church, now on trial, and the reward of the faithful of the world, after its trial, at the close of the Millennial Age: that the reward of the former is to be the glory of the Spirit Nature, the Divine; while that of the latter is to be perfection of the human nature, once enjoyed in Eden by their progenitor, Adam.

UNDERSTANDING THE RANSOM

"However, it was not until 1872, when I gained a clearer view of our Lord's work, as our ransom price that I found the strength and foundation of all hope of restitution to be in that doctrine. Up to that time, when I read the testimony that all in their graves should come forth, etc., I yet doubted the full provision – whether it should be understood to include idiots or infants who had died without reaching any degree of understanding, beings to whom the present life and its experiences would seem to be of little or no advantage. But when in 1872 I came to examine the subject of restitution from the standpoint of the Ransom Price given by our Lord Jesus for Adam, and consequently for all lost in Adam, it settled the matter of restitution completely and gave me the fullest assurance that ALL must come forth from their graves and be brought to a clear knowledge of the truth and to a full opportunity to gain everlasting life in Christ.

"Thus passed the years 1869 to 1872. The years following, to 1876, were years of continued growth in grace and knowledge on the part of the handful of Bible Students with whom I met in Allegheny.  We progressed from our first crude and indefinite ideas of restitution to a clearer understanding of the details; but God's due time for revealing the clear light had not yet come.

"During this time, too, we came to recognize the difference between our Lord as 'the man who gave himself,' and as the Lord who would come again, a Spirit Being. We saw that Spirit-Beings can be present, and yet invisible to men. We greatly grieved at the error of Second Adventists, who were expecting Christ in the flesh, and teaching that the world and all in it, except Second Adventists, would be burned up in 1873 or 1874; their time settings and disappointments and crude ideas generally as to the object and manner of His coming, brought more or less reproach upon us and upon all who longed for and proclaimed His coming Kingdom."

Here we would inject some conclusions of our own. We are fully persuaded that the full and complete understanding of the Ransom enabled Brother Russell to understand and clarify many Scriptures whose meaning had not been understood at all by God's people.  We explain just one: "I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of Hosts. Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar: and he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged." (Isa. 6:5,6,7)

The "live coal" in the above is Present Truth, and particularly the Present Truth upon the Ransom. While in Babylon we were all contaminated with the errors that prevailed there - and especially was this so about the Ransom.  But once we came to a clear under-standing of the Ransom, a great part of that error was purged from our minds. None of us could say this was true until That Servant had given us a clear explanation of the Ransom and kindred teachings. Then the words of Jesus assumed real meaning for us: "Thy whole body shall be full of light." (Matt. 6: 22)

In the text quoted above, the Prophet Isaiah pictures God's people in Babylon before the Harvest - "those that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof." (Ezek. 9:4) But it can properly be applied to Brother Russell himself, who was certainly much disturbed as he dwelt "in the midst of a people of unclean lips” - those obsessed with much confusing error.

Now more from the book: "It was about Jan. 1, 1876, that my attention was specially drawn to the subject of prophetic time, as it relates to these doctrines and hopes. It came about in this way: I received a paper called The Herald of the Morning, sent by its editor, Mr. N. H. Barbour. When I opened it I at once identified it with Adventism from the picture on its first cover, and I examined it with curiosity to see what 'time' they would next 'set' for the burning up of the world. But judge not a book from its cover!  To my surprise and gratification I learned from its contents that its editor was beginning to get his eyes open on the subject which for some years had so greatly rejoiced our hearts in Allegheny - that the object of our Lord's return is not to destroy, but to bless all the families of the earth; and that His coming would be thief-like, and not in the flesh, but as a Spirit Being, invisible to men; and that the gathering of His Church and the separation of the wheat from the tares would progress in the end of this Age without the world's being aware of it.

"I rejoiced to find others coming to the same advanced position, but was astonished to find the statement very cautiously set forth that the editor believed the prophecies to indicate that the Lord was already present in the world (unseen and invisible) and that the Harvest Work of gathering the tares was already due; and that this view was warranted by the time prophecies, which but a few months before he supposed had failed.

"Here was a new thought; could it be that the 'Time Prophecies,' which I had so long despised because of their misuse by the Adventists, were really meant to indicate when the Lord would be invisibly present to set up His Kingdom - a thing which I saw could be known in no other way? It seemed, to say the least, a very reasonable thing that the Lord would inform His people on the subject - especially as He had promised that He would not leave them in darkness with the world, and that although the day of the Lord would come upon all others as a thief in the night, it should not be so to the watching, earnest Saints.

"I recalled certain arguments used by my friend, Jonas Wendall and other Adventists to prove that 1873 would witness the burning of the world, etc. - the chronology of the world showing that 6,000 years from Adam ended with the beginning of 1873, and that other arguments drawn from the Scriptures and supposed to coincide. Could it be that these time arguments, which I had passed by as unworthy of attention, really contained an important truth which they had misapplied?

"Anxious to learn from any quarter whatever God had to teach, I at once wrote to Mr. Barbour, informing him of my harmony on other points and desiring to know particulars why and upon what Scriptural evidences he held that Christ's presence and the Harvesting of the Gospel Age dated from the Autumn of 1874.

"The answer showed that my surmise had been correct, namely, that the time prophecies - arguments - chronology, etc., were the same as used by Second Adventists in 1873, and explained how Mr. Barbour and Mr. J. H. Paton, of Michigan, a co-worker with him, had been regular Second Adventists up to that time; and that when the date 1874 had passed without the world being burned up, and without their seeing Christ in the flesh, they were for a time dumfounded. They had examined the time prophecies, which seemingly passed unfulfilled, and had been unable to find any flaw, and had begun to wonder whether the time was right and their expectations wrong; whether the views of restitution and blessings to the world, which myself and others were teaching, might not be the things to look for.

"It seems that not long after their 1874 disappointment, a reader of The Herald of the Morning, who had a copy of the Diaglott, noticed something in it which he thought peculiar - that in Matthew 24:27,37,39, the word which in our Common Version is rendered coming is translated presence. This was the clue; and, following it, they had been led through prophetic time toward proper views regarding the object and manner of our Lord's return. I, on the contrary, was led first to proper views of the object and manner of our Lord's return, and then to an examination of the time, indicated in God's Word. Thus God leads His children from different starting points of truth; but when the heart is earnest and trustful the result must be to draw all such together.

"But there were no books or other publications at that time setting forth the time prophecies as then understood; so I paid Mr. Barbour's expenses to come to see me at Philadelphia, to show me fully and Scripturally, if he could, that the prophecies indicated 1874 as the date at which the Lord's presence and the harvest began. This was in the summer of 1876. He came, and the evidence satisfied me.  Being a person of positive convictions and fully consecrated to the Lord, I at once saw that the special times in which we were living have an important bearing upon our work and duty as Christ's disciples; that being in the time of the Harvest, the Harvest work should be done; and that the present truth was the sickle by which the Lord would have us to do a gathering and reaping work everywhere among His children.

BEGINNING OF THE HARVEST WORK

"I inquired of Mr. Barbour as to what was being done by him and the Herald. He replied that nothing was being done; that the readers of the Herald, being disappointed Adventists, had nearly all lost interest and stopped their subscriptions; and that thus, with money exhausted, the Herald might be said to be practically suspended. I said to him that instead of feeling discouraged and giving up the work since with his newly found light on restitution (for when we first met he had much to learn from me on the fulness of restitution, based upon the sufficiency of the Ransom given for all, as I had much to learn from him concerning time), he should rather feel that now he had some good tidings to preach, such as he never had before, and that his zeal should be correspondingly increased. At the same time, the knowledge of the fact that we were already in the time of the Harvest gave me an impetus to spread the truth such as I never had before. I, therefore, resolved upon a vigorous campaign for the truth.

"So I determined to curtail my business cares and give my time, as well as my means, to the great Harvest Work. Accordingly, I sent Mr. Barbour back to his home, with money and instructions to prepare in concise book-form the good tidings, so far as then understood, including the time features, while I closed out my Philadelphia business, preparatory to engaging in the work, as I afterwards did, traveling and preaching.

"This little book of 196 pages thus prepared was entitled 'The Three Worlds'; and as I was enabled to give some time and thought to its preparation, it was issued by us both jointly, both names appearing on its title page, though it was mainly written by Mr. Barbour. While this was not the first book to teach a measure of restitution, nor the first to treat upon the time prophecies, it was, I believe, the first to combine the idea of restitution with time prophecy. From the sale of this book and from my purse, our traveling expenses, etc., were met. After a time I conceived of adding another harvest laborer to the force, so sent for Mr. Paton, who promptly responded and whose traveling expenses were met in the same manner.

"But noticing how quickly some peop1e forget what they have heard, it soon became evident that while the meetings were useful in awaking interest, a monthly journal was needed to hold and develop that interest. It seemed, therefore, to be the Lord's indication that one of our number should settle somewhere and begin again the regular issuing of the Herald of the Morning. I suggested that Mr. Barbour do this, as he had had experience as a typesetter and therefore could do it the most economically, while Mr. Paton and I would continue to travel and contribute to its columns, as we should find opportunity. To the objection that the type had been sold and that the few subscriptions which would come in would not, for a long time, make the journal self-sustaining, I replied that I would supply the money for purchasing the type, etc., and leave a few hundred dollars in the bank, subject to Mr. Barbour's check, and that he should manage it as economically as possible, while Mr. Paton and I continued to travel. This, which seemed to be the Lord's will in the matter, was therefore done.

NEW ADHERENTS TO THE WORKING FORCE

"It was after this, while on a tour of the New England States, that I met Mr. A. F. Adams, a young Methodist minister, who became deeply interested, accepting the message heartily during the week that I preached to his congregation. Subsequently, I introduced him to little gatherings of interested ones in neighboring towns, and assisted otherwise, as I could, rejoicing in another one who, with study, would soon be a co-laborer in the Harvest field. About this time, too, I was much encouraged by the accession of Mr. A. D. Jones, then a clerk in my employ in Pittsburgh, who was a young man of activity and promise, one who soon developed into an active and appreciative co-laborer in the Harvest work. Mr. Jones ran well for a time, but ambition or something eventually made utter shipwreck of his faith, leaving us a painful illustration of the wisdom of the Apostle's words, 'My brethren, be not many of you teachers, knowing that we shall have the severer judgment.’

"Thus far all had gone smoothly and onward: we had been greatly blessed with the truth, but not specially tested in our love and fidelity to it.  But the Spring of 1878, the parallel in time to our Lord's crucifixion, and of His statement to Peter, 'Satan hath desired to have you, that he might sift you as wheat' (Luke 22:31), the sifting began which has Continued Ever Since; and which must, sooner or later, test every one who receives the light of present truth. For this fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is - whether he has built his faith flimsily of wood, hay and stubble, instead of valuable stones of God's revealed truth; or whether he has built it upon the shifting sands of human theories, or upon the solid rock, the Ransom, the only foundation which God has provided.

"They who build upon that Rock shall be safe personally, even though they have built up an illogical faith, which the fire and shaking of this day of trial will overthrow and utterly consume, but they who build upon any other foundation, whether they use good or bad materials, are sure of complete wreckage.

"The object of this trial and sifting evidently is to select all whose heart-desires are unselfish, who are fully and unreservedly consecrated to the Lord, who are anxious to have the Lord's will done, and whose confidence in His wisdom, His way and His Word is so great that they refuse to be led away from the Lord's Word, either by sophistries of others, or by plans and ideas of their own. These, in the sifting time, will be strengthened and shall increase their joy in the Lord and their knowledge of His plans, even while their faith is being tested by the falling into error of thousands on every hand.

FIRST HARVEST SIFTING

The sifting began thus: Regarding St. Paul’s statement, 'We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye,' etc., we still held the idea which Adventists, and indeed all Christians hold, that at some time the living saints would be suddenly and miraculously caught away bodily, thenceforth to be forever with the Lord. And now our acquaintance with the time prophecies led us to expect this translation of the saints at the point of time in this Age parallel to the Lord's resurrection; for many of the parallelisms between the Jewish and Christian Dispensations were already seen by us, and formed one of the features of the little book The Three Worlds.

"We did not then see, as we do now, that the date, 1878, marked the date for the beginning of the establishment of the Kingdom of God, by the glorification of all who already slept in Christ (that is, the dead in Him), and the 'change' which St. Paul mentions is to occur in the moment of death to all the class described, from that date onward through the Harvest period, until all the living members of the 'body of Christ' shall have been changed to glorious Spirit-beings. When at that date (1878) nothing occurred, which we could see, a re-examination showed me that our mistake lay in expecting to see all the living saints changed at once, and without dying, an erroneous view shared in by the whole nominal Church, and one which we had not yet observed or discarded. Our present clear view was the result of the examination thus started.

"I soon saw that the Apostle's words, 'We shall not all sleep,' that the word sleep was not synonymous with die, though generally so understood; but, on the contrary, the expression sleep, here used, represents unconsciousness; and that the Apostles wished us to understand, that from a certain time in the Lord's presence, His saints, though they would die like other men, would not remain for any time unconscious, but in the moment of dying would be changed and would receive the Spirit bodies promised. Throughout this Gospel Age death of the Lord's children has been followed by unconsciousness - ‘sleep.’  This continued true of all who 'fell asleep in Jesus' up to the time when He took the office of King, which we have shown was in 1878 (Volume 2, Studies in the Scriptures, pp. 218, 219)

"Not only did the King at that time 'awaken in His likeness' all the members of His body, the Church, who slept, but for the same reason (the time establishing His Kingdom having come) it is no longer necessary that the 'feet,' or last remaining members should go into 'sleep' or unconsciousness. On the contrary, each now, as finishes his course, faithful unto death, will at once receive the Crown of Life, and being changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, can not be said to sleep, or to be unconscious at all. Here, then, 1878 is applicable, 'Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord.' So this reexamination showed further light upon the pathway and became a great cause for encouragement, as evidencing the Lord's continued leading.

"But while I was thus helped to clearer views and brighter hopes, and while I diligently endeavored to help others, the Spring of 1878 proved far from a blessing to Mr. Barbour and to many under his influence. Rejecting the plain, simple solution presented above, Mr. Barbour seemed to feel that he must of necessity get up something new to divert attention from the failure of the living saints to be caught away en masse.

"But, alas! how dangerous it is for any man to feel too much responsibility and attempt to force new light. To our painful surprise, Mr. Barbour wrote an article for the Herald denying the doctrine of the Atonement; denying that the death of Christ was the ransom-price of Adam and his race, saying that the death of Christ was no more a settlement of the penalty of man's sins than would the sticking of a pin through a fly and causing it suffering and death, be considered by an earthly parent as a just settlement for the misdemeanor of his child."

As our beloved Pastor has so truly said, "How dangerous it is for any man to feel too much responsibility and attempt to force new light." We have found this true in JFR after he became President of the Society. He disposed of Tentative Justification, and also replaced the "great multitude" as a spiritual class to an earthly class; and one error brought on other errors, such as "dividing the sheep and the goats" before the New Covenant is inaugurated. The Jehovah's Witnesses now teach that there will be no resurrection for Adam, the Scribes and Pharisees or any of the wicked. Those who do not join them before Armageddon will not be resurrected, etc.

Another group has invented a new class because of the disappointment of 1954. They felt "too much responsibility" and attempted to force new light; and that new light (?) has forced them into many other errors – such as a narrow way in the Camp, perverting Tentative Justification, their newly-invented class to be first in the Kingdom blessings instead of "to the Jew first" as taught by the Apostle Paul, etc. However, they still distribute the Studies in the Scriptures, which is a far-cry from the Witnesses, for which we commend them.

It is our hope and prayer that what we have given may prove a rich blessing to our readers, and that the subject of That Servant has been magnified and strengthened in the hearts of all. God bless the memory of That Servant!

We also pay tribute to the Epiphany Messenger who faithfully upheld and defended the Truth given us by That Servant. We honor those whom God honors in keeping with 1 Samuel 2:20: "Them that honor Me I will honor." In so doing we will grow in grace and knowledge of our Beloved Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and continue in "the faith once delivered unto the saints." (Jude 3) God bless the memory of the Epiphany Messenger!

"Let them shout for joy, and be glad, that favour my righteous cause: yea, let them say continually, Let the Lord be magnified, which hath pleasure in the prosperity of his servant." (Psa. 35:27)

NO. 577 TO THE JEW FIRST

by Epiphany Bible Students

In Rom. 2:10 St. Paul makes this statement: "Glory, honor, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile." Since we entered the tribulation period in 1914 the Jews have been the object of much and varied controversy; and we may logically expect more of it before lasting peace is established in the earth.

This uproar has not only been by way of armed conflict, but the literary conflict has kept pace with it. And, as should be expected, much of the literature has been badly tainted with error – an epidemic of it; so it seems timely to offer an analysis of some of these contentions.

ANGLO-ISRAELISM:  The theories of this organization have received rather wide acceptance in some parts of society, the kernel of the teaching being briefly this: The real Jews are not those claiming to be such, but the real ones are actually the British nation. They tell us that the name is from two Hebrew words - Brith and Ish - the meaning of which is Chosen Man, which is a fitting description of the British people. And, as may be expected, they produce Scripture to “prove” their point:

"Whereas thou has been forsaken and hated, so that no man went through thee [this was especially true after the Reformation uprising shook off the papal yoke, and England became one of the chief targets of Roman opposition], I will make thee an eternal excellency, a joy of many generations. Thou also shalt suck the milk of the Gentiles, and shalt suck the breast of kings [Up to 1914 it could be properly stated that England's sun never sets. Its far-flung empire was a special source of pride to the English people; they were a dominating force throughout the world.]; and thou shalt know that I am the Lord and am thy Saviour and thy Redeemer, the mighty one of Jacob. For brass I will bring gold, and for iron I will bring silver [the revenue from places such as India, South Africa, etc., was exceptionally great], and for wood brass, and for stones iron: I will also make thy officers peace, and thine exactors [revenue collectors] righteousness." (Isa. 60:15-17) Rotherham's translation of verse 16 is even more emphatic: "Thou shall derive sweet nourishment from the nations, yea on the bounty of kings thou shalt be sustained."

Additional “proof” is produced from Isa. 61:6: "Ye shall be named the priests of the Lord: men shall call you the ministers of our God: ye shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory shall ye boast yourselves." It needs no argument that the general import of these Scriptures did seem pertinent to England up to 1914; London was the financial center of the world. Most of the financing of the nations was done through English banks; none dared offend them lest their credit be cut off.

Be it noted that the Anglo-Israelites do not claim that the English represent the whole twelve tribes of Israel, but merely the ten "lost" tribes – that part called Israel after the revolt separated the ten tribes from the two tribes of Judah and Benjamin when Solomon died. Jeroboam was the first king of the ten tribes, and he proceeded immediately to corrupt their religion; and he and succeeding kings proceeded to deprave the ten tribes much more than was true in the two tribes. Therefore, the Lord finally sent Shalmaneser, King of Assyria, to wage war against them; and he completely defeated them in 739 B.C., at which time most of the ten tribes were carried away into Assyrian captivity. (2 Kings 18:9-11)  To replace the captives the Assyrian King sent a horde of heathen Babylonians, who corrupted the Jews that remained and introduced their heathenish religion in the land. This conglomerate multitude became known as Samaritans; and were much detested by the two tribes.

By the time the two tribes were carried off captive to Babylon (133 years later) the ten tribes had become widely scattered – so much so that history does not give a clear account of what became of them. Thus, they became "lost"; and the contention is that they finally settled in what is now England, that the English people presently are the true descendants of those ten lost tribes; and are in fact the real Jews. The word Jews occurs for the first time in the Bible in 2 Kings 16:6. It is a distortion of the word Judah, which eventually was pronounced Joods, then Jews. Thus the two tribes are Jews, not Israelites; and, say some, Jesus made this clear distinction to the Apostles in Matt. 10: 5,6: "Go not in the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not; but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." From this Scripture they contend Jesus was telling His disciples to find the ten "lost" tribes (lost sheep of Israel).

Just a superficial examination of this last text should convince any unbiased mind that Jesus did not mean anything like what this cult now tries to read into it, because not one of the Apostles ever went to England; and some of them certainly would have done so had Jesus told them to do it. In fact, about the first authentic date in history for England is established at 55 B.C., at which time Julius Caesar invaded the Island; and that was just 85 years before Jesus began His ministry. Furthermore, the undisputed records tell us that the first conversion to Christianity in England was in Kent in A.D. 597 by St. Augustine. That was about 500 years after the last of the Apostles died. Therefore, any one who would try to use Matt. 10:5 to prove Anglo-Israelism must be in desperate straits for something to say concerning the error.

Here is a quotation from one authority on the subject: "Jew - One belonging to the tribe or to the Kingdom of Judah. Then the meaning was extended, and the word was applied to any one of the Hebrew race who returned from the Captivity [in 536 B.C.] and finally it comprehended all persons of that race throughout the world (Matt. 2:2)." Matt. 2:2 says Jesus was "King of the Jews" - not King of the Israelites. And Rom. 2:10 says "to the Jew first - not to the Israelites first. Thus, if we would make any discrimination at all between the ten tribes and the two tribes, we would be forced to conclude that it is the Israelites who are not Jews. But it is well established that parts of all twelve tribes returned from the Captivity in 536 B.C., although the larger number were from the tribes of Judah and Benjamin.

OTHER VAGARIES

Another publication attacks the Jews from a different angle: "Any student of the Scripture knows that Jesus Christ was not a Jew. He is a Galilean and an Israelite.  The apostates which crucified our Lord and perpetuate the hate for our Lord were identified by Jesus when He said: 'If ye were the children of Abraham, ye would do the works of Abraham, but ye are of your father the Devil, a liar from the foundation of the earth.’” Taking figurative statements of the Bible and attempting to apply them literally has wrought no end of confusion throughout Christendom during the entire Gospel Age. Certainly, those people who were bantering Jesus did not actually have the Devil as their father; they were human beings the same as the rest of us, except with different characters. Rev. 5:5 specifically says Jesus is "The lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of David"; and Heb. 7:14, Dia. is even more to the point: "It is very plain that our Lord has sprung from Judah." Thus, when they say, "any student of the Scripture knows that Jesus Christ was not a Jew," it is clear enough that they “study” only such Scriptures as can be applied to their own ideas. Any Scripture that contradicts them is blithely ignored - as though it did not exist.

These same people also declare that Jesus Himself was an outstanding Jew hater; so we offer another pertinent Scripture that directly contradicts that thought: "Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; that you may be the children of your Father which is in Heaven… If you love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?" (Matt. 5:43-46) And further in 1 Cor. 2:8: "Had they [the Jews] known, they would not have crucified the Lord of Glory.”

Yet more: This same group contends that the Jews are the Antichrist. Clearly enough, they do not understand the meaning of this word, which actually means "in the place of Christ," rather than "against Christ."  Once the real meaning of the word is understood, we then have no difficulty in connecting it with St. Paul's words in 2 Thes. 2:3,4: "Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God ... so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God."

Of course, St. Paul wrote the foregoing many years after Jesus had been crucified, so it could not possibly refer to the Jews. He does say that this great Apostasy (this mystery of iniquity) "doth already work," yet its real force would not be felt until some future time. This same publication leans heavily upon Martin Luther in support of their anti-Jewish contentions; yet here is what Martin Luther himself said concerning Antichrist: "The faith and the Church are at stake.  I rejoice to suffer in so noble a cause.  I am not worthy of so holy a trial.  I feel much freer now that I am certain the pope is Antichrist... I hope none but the papists will stain their hands in my blood. Antichrist reigns... All the articles of John Huss were condemned by Antichrist and his apostles in the synagogue of Satan... On the left Christ is washing the disciples' feet; on the right Antichrist, the pope, is having his toes kissed by monarchs."

JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES: This organization also adds its loud voice toward castigation of the Jews, because the Jews generally will have no part of their teachings. The Witnesses do not advocate violence against the Jews, or revile them politically, but they do predict extreme violence for them in the approaching Armageddon - at which time they forecast the extermination of all people, including the Jews specifically, that have not joined their organization by the time the holocaust arrives.

In this the Witnesses mimic the Antichrist, who also contends the Roman Catholic Church is the one true church; and during papacy's counterfeit reign from 799 to 1799 they were very vociferous that there could be no salvation outside their church. And we may observe here that those who make such claims go more and more into error - "outer darkness."  This is well typified in the attempted construction of the Tower of Babel.  Men said, "Let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto Heaven." (Gen. 11:4) They would have insurance against another flood (in spite of the promise that "the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh" - Gen. 9:15); they would build Bab-El (Gateway to God). As retribution for this affront, the Lord confused their tongues; they could no longer understand one another.

Thus, the effort became known as Babyl, meaning confusion - the same being typical of the efforts of the Roman Church, and presently in our day of the Witnesses, to build a "Gateway to God"; that is, WE are the one true church - no salvation outside of us - no other access to God.  And just as the Roman Church lost all important Biblical truths as presented by St. Peter, so the Witnesses have also lost the great majority of that system of truths that was left to them by the one they claim as their founder, Pastor Russell.

The time is now with us for the manifestation of persons, principles and things in a way never before done in the history of the human race. "The Lord will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of hearts." (1 Cor. 4:5) And, while we have no thought of success in stopping present inequalities and erroneous teachings, we can warn those who have "an ear to hear" not to be partakers of such sins.  The evils of "this present evil world" (Gal. 1:4) will continue apace with the sound exposures until the Lord's Prayer is fulfilled: "Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is done in Heaven."  "Expecting and hastening the presence of the Day of God, on account of which the Heavens [the present ecclesiastical order] being on fire will be dissolved, and the elements [various political, labor and social organizations] burning intensely will melt. But we, according to His promise, are looking for new Heavens [a universal truth-motivated religious order] and a new earth [new social order], in which dwells righteousness." (2 Peter 3:12.13. Dia.)

THE TRUTH ON THE JEWISH SITUATION

Beginning with p. 243 in Parousia Vol. 3 of Studies In The Scriptures, there is a chapter on The Restoration of Israel, some of which we shall quote, or paraphrase, with some additions of our own:

Among the relics of antiquity that have come down to our day, there is no other object of so great interest as the Jewish people. The Adversary and his blinded dupes have sought to destroy and eliminate the Jews - just as many of them have also tried to destroy the Bible ("My two witnesses [the Old and the New Testament] shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days [the papal supremacy from 539 to 1799] in sackcloth" - Rev. 11:3) - suppressed and depressed as those that mourn for the dead.  But the very fact that the Jews are here today, as a people distinguished from other peoples (in keeping with the commandment of the Lord given to them more than 2,500 years ago:  "Separate yourselves from the people of the land" - Ezra 10:11), should cause any God-fearing person to realize that even in their "cast-off" condition God has overruled their preservation - just as He has preserved His inspired Word.

Let us emphasize once more that all the Bible writers were Jews; and St. Paul makes a capital point of this in Rom. 3:1,2: "What advantage then hath the Jew?... Much every way; chiefly, because unto them were com-mitted the oracles of God." And this statement is complemented in Rom. 3:29: "Is He the God of the Jews only? Is He not also of the Gentiles?"  Further in Gal. 2:15: "We who are Jews by nature."  Here St. Paul tells us that he himself is a Jew; and he wrote a large part of the New Testament.

Let us emphasize also that at the time of the Exodus from Egypt the Jews were the only nation that worshiped but one God. "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord." (Deut. 6:4) The various heathen nations had a multiplicity of Gods - a god of war, a god for love, a god for vegetation, etc.  And with all of their gods combined they could not even remotely approach the idealism that came to the Jews through their "one Lord."

The searchers after ancient lore have untiringly questioned every inanimate object that could give a mite of historic or scientific information.  Monuments, altars, tombs, relics of public and private edifices, paintings, sculptures, hieroglyphs and dead languages have all been appealed to; and some have even tried patiently to discover the line of actual truth that probably inspired the many fanciful traditions, legends, songs, etc., that have come floating down the centuries in order to learn all that is possible to know of human origin, history and destiny. But a most interesting relic, and one whose history can be most easily deciphered and understood, is the Jewish people. In them we have a monument of antiquity of inestimable value, upon which are recorded, in clearly legible characters, the origin, the progress and final destiny of the whole human race - a living and intelligent witness of the gradual outworking of a wonderful purpose in human affairs.

As a people, they are marked as distinct and peculiar by every circumstance of their history, and by their common religious faith, as well as by every element of their manners and customs.  A forceful proof of this was to be observed in the war in the Fall of 1973 on their Atonement Day - a day in which ordinarily the orthodox Jews refrain from food and water. Under the heat and the strain of the battle that day many of the Jewish soldiers became dehydrated and well-nigh exhausted, yet they persisted in the abstinence - although their leaders had granted them freedom from the age old custom. Thus, some of them at least still try to adhere to the Law of Moses and the covenant which Moses mediated for that nation almost four thousand years ago. The national characteristics of many centuries ago are still prominent, even to their fondness for the leeks and onions and garlic of Egypt, and their stiff-necked obstinacy.

As a people, they truly had much advantage in every way, in having committed unto them "the oracles of God," developing among them poets, lawyers, statesmen and philosophers, and leading them up step by step from being a nation of slaves in Egypt to be - as in the time of Solomon (the zenith of their glory) - a people distinguished and honored among the nations, attracting the wonder and admiration of the world. (1 Kings 4:30-34; 10:1-29)

Since they cast off and condemned the Just One and said, "His blood be upon us, and our children” (Matt. 27:25), they have again suffered, even more so in many instances, than they did in their Old Testament stripings. This had its horrible beginning in the year A.D.70, when the Roman Army under Titus captured Jerusalem, destroyed their temple, and scattered them throughout the Gentile world. In their treatment of Jesus, God took the Jews at their word: When Jerusalem finally fell into the hands of the Romans, there was a circle of crosses around the City, with a dead Jew hanging on every one of them.  Prophetically it has been written of them, "Fools because of their transgression [when they crucified the Lord of Glory], and because of their iniquities [their violations of the Mosaic Law], are afflicted." (Psa. 107:17)  Present-day instances of this are to be seen in the terrible treatment they have received in Germany, Russia, etc.

Israel has been a nation scattered and peeled - driven as exiles from country to country, from province to province, and have been deprived of almost every right and privilege which other men enjoyed. Rejecting Christianity - in its corrupted as well as in its true form - they became the objects of the contempt and relentless persecution of the Church of Rome.  Thus estranged from God and from their fellow men of every nation, sad and pitiable indeed has been their miserable condition. During the relentless Papal perse-cutions of the Dark Ages, they have suffered in common with the saints and martyrs of Jesus - the Christian for his rejection of Antichrist, the Jew for his rejection of both Christ and Antichrist.

The treatment accorded them forced a marked change in their way of life. Canaan was a goodly land - "a land flowing with milk and honey" - so that a large segment of that people were engaged in farming and animal husbandry. But such things could not be carried with them as they were chased from nation to nation; and this forced them into businesses of various kinds, and into the money markets. In this manner their "quick assets" (stocks, bonds, cash, etc.) could be carried with them, so that today it is the oddity of the first rank to see a Jewish farmer. Almost all of them are in the cities, pursuing their professions or marketing their various wares; they no longer take the chance of having to leave their farms behind them as they moved on.

Nevertheless, whether they are still blinded to God's promise to deliver them once more, as He did from Egypt, and from their various captivities, God is faithful that promised: "Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will make a New Covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah [this certainly includes all twelve tribes]: Not according to the covenant I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the Lord: But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts and write it in their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people." (Jer. 31:31-33)

God has not made this New Covenant with Israel yet, but we can be sure that they never again will be entirely driven out from Jerusalem. He has planted them back in their own soil - in the land promised to Abraham, to him and to his seed after him forever - and even though we see them greatly oppressed, we can be sure that no one will drive them out of that land. The promise of God is to natural Israel - to be planted again in their homeland; but "all Israel" includes only those faithful covenant-keeping Jews:  the others are counted as the heathen. And it will be through those faithful Jews that all the families of the earth will be blessed.

"The Scriptures, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel [the good news] unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed." (Gal. 3:8)  And we may be sure that those faithful covenant-keeping Jews, who have continued in their faith during the harrowing experiences meted out to them during their "cast off" condition, will with alacrity and joy walk up the Highway of Holiness (Isa. 35:8) under their New Covenant ameliorating conditions.

Up to the time of their casting off by Jesus, the Jews were the only nation that had covenant relationship with God. "O children of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up from the land of Egypt.  You only have I known of all the families of the earth: therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities." (Amos 3:1,2)  Any of the people of other nations who could come into relationship with God had first to become proselyte Jews. And the same conditions will apply when the New Covenant is inaugurated - any who will be the recipient of those blessings must first become Jews.

So it was with the ministry of Jesus and the Apostles - the gospel was first presented to the Jewish nation; and the message of Christian salvation has come to us through them.  Cornelius was the first Gentile convert (Acts Chapter 10); but he had to wait for three and one-half years after Jesus' death before God would give to him the Holy Spirit.  Since that time the gospel has been alike to Jew and Gentile, although very few of the Jews have become Christians. "Blindness in part has happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in." (Rom. 11:25) Nevertheless, it should be emphasized here that the blessings and privileges of the Mosaic Law were offered "to the Jew first”; likewise, the blessings and privileges of Christianity were also offered "to the Jew first."  Also, the blessings and privileges of the New Covenant will be "to the Jew first."

A "New Covenant" necessarily carries the inference of an Old Covenant, the same being the Law Covenant given through Moses, of which the Gentiles were not in any way included. Therefore, a new covenant could not possibly be made with the Gentiles, because they have never had an old one. Any Gentiles wishing to partake of the old covenant had to become Jews; and some of them did just that, as instance - "Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch." (Acts 6:5)  The same limitation will apply with the New Covenant: Any who wish to receive its blessings will have to become Jews. "Salvation is of the Jews." (John 4:22)

JACOB'S TROUBLE

"These are the words that the Lord spake concerning Israel and concerning Judah [all twelve tribes are included in this]. For thus saith the Lord; We have heard a voice of trembling, of fear, and not of peace [which has been occurring since 1948, and will be yet greatly increased]... Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob's trouble; but he shall be saved out of it." (Jer. 30:4-7)   Jacob is a term often applied to the entire nation of Israel in the Old Testament; but Jacob is never used to designate the Christian church.

That “great day” of the foregoing text is described in more detail in Zech. 14:1-3: "Behold, the day of the Lord cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee. For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city. Then shall the Lord go forth, and fight against those nations, as when He fought in the day of battle."

Outstanding instances of the Lord fighting for Israel in ancient times are given in Ex. 17:8-14, where Amalek and his army were decisively defeated by Joshua; and in Judges 7:15-22, where Gideon with a band of 300 men accomplished the destruction of a Midianitish army "as grasshoppers for multitude; both they and their camels were without number." See also 1 Kings 20:1-21,29, where Ben-hadad and "thirty and two kings with him" lost "an hundred thousand footmen in one day."

"Jacob's Trouble" is still in the future, so we are now privileged to see only the overall picture; but enough is revealed to give us a fairly good idea of the event - in keeping with the words of St. Peter: "We have also a more sure word of prophecy, whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn" (2 Pet. 1:19), the dawning day here being the inauguration of the New Covenant with Israel.

Lest any of our readers should draw an overly pessimistic conclusion about Jacob's Trouble, we would remind them of these facts: At the time they were cast off by Jesus just before His death ("Behold, your house is left unto you desolate" - Matt. 23:38) the Jews, as a nation, began their decline; and they lost their national existence completely in the year A.D. 70, when the Roman army scattered them throughout the earth. And from that date onward the Gentile supremacy waxed greater and greater.  However, since their restoration to their homeland the Jews as a nation have been on a gradual upgrade; whereas, the Gentile nations have become steadily more shaken and distressed. And this disparity will become much more pronounced in the years immediately ahead. The writing of Isa. 60:1-3 is now markedly pertinent:  “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the Lord shall arise upon thee.  And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising."

SUMMATION: Those who ignore or openly contradict the foregoing interpretations are rejecting large and important parts of the Bible, whether they realize it or not. As instance, the Jehovah's Witnesses lay great stress upon their Bible “proofs” for what they teach; yet we cannot recall one instance where they have given any comment at all on Jer. 31:31-34, or Isa. 60:1-3, or upon various statements of St. Paul concerning the Jew.

Neither the Witnesses nor any groups who have cast out the Jews can produce any Scriptures that support their contentions about the Jews, but we can produce many Scriptures to support our contentions: "And there shall be no more a pricking brier unto the house of Israel, nor any grieving thorn of all that are round about them, that despised them; and they shall know that I am the Lord God. Thus saith the Lord God; When I shall have gathered the house of Israel from the people among whom they are scattered, and shall be sanctified in them in the sight of the heathen, then shall they dwell in their land that I have given to my servant Jacob." (Ezek. 28:25,26)

"Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel. And ye shall know that I am the Lord, when I have opened your graves, O my people, and brought you up out of your graves. And I shall put my spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then shall ye know that I the Lord have spoken it, and performed it, saith the Lord." (Ezek. 37: 12-14)

Psalms 107:17-22 also applies to natural Israel, and also supports our contention regarding "to the Jew first": "They cry unto the Lord in their trouble [Jacob's Trouble - second phase], and he saveth them out of their distresses." (v. 19) These covenant-keeping Jews in Jerusalem will be the "first" to receive the blessings of the New Covenant, and will naturally become the first able and zealous missionaries of the Kingdom.  Many will join them, of course - particularly the "repentant and believing" in the finished picture of this Epiphany. "For thus saith the Lord; Sing with gladness for Jacob, and shout among the chief of nations: publish ye, praise ye, and, say O Lord, save thy people, the remnant of Israel." (Jer. 31: 7)

"And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem." (Isa. 2:3; Micah 4:2) We should emphasize, however, that these promises apply only to the faithful covenant-keeping Jews - all others are counted as heathen.

Since "God is faithful that promised" (Heb. 10:23; 11:11), it is our hope and prayer that all God's faithful people are in harmony with God's good and perfect will. "Jerusalem is builded as a city that is compact together... There are set thrones of judgment, the thrones of the house of David.  Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee... Because of the house of the Lord our God I will seek thy good." (Psa. 122:3,5-9)

THE SCOPE OF THE ABRAHAMIC COVENANT

QUESTION - Which is the greater, the Abrahamic Covenant or the New Covenant?

ANSWER    - The Abrahamic Covenant is an all-embracing arrangement.  Everything that God has done and will yet do for our race is included in that Abrahamic Covenant.  The Law Covenant of Israel was added to this Covenant “because of transgression.”  Although only a typical arrangement, nevertheless the Law Covenant developed a certain faithful class, to be made “princes in all the earth” during the Millennial Age.  This Covenant was represented by Hagar; and her son Ishmael represented the nation of Israel (Gal. 4:21-31).  The Christ, the New Creation class, was represented in Isaac, Sarah’s son.  Sarah, Abraham’s first wife, represented that part of the Abrahamic Covenant which pertained to the spiritual seed, the New Creation, that which we sometimes speak of as the Sarah Covenant.  This Sarah Covenant - the Grace Covenant, the Covenant of Sacrifice (Psa. 50:5) - brings forth the Isaac Class, the Church, Head and Body.

Even as Isaac was not born after the flesh in the ordinary sense (Abraham and Sarah being too old naturally), but was a special creation, so with The Christ company, the Church.  This “Isaac” class is developed as a distinctly New Creation, formed from members of the fallen human race. The Divine invitation to these is to present their bodies living sacrifices.  They sacrifice their human nature that they may attain with their Head, the antitypical “Isaac,” the Divine nature - something never before offered.  After this New Creation is completed, the blessing indicated in God’s Promise to Abraham will reach all the families of the earth.  It will reach them, first through the “Isaac” seed, the New Creation, and secondly, through the Ancient Worthies, developed in the Ages preceding this Age, under God’s typical arrangements.

All kindreds and families of the earth will be blessed by the privilege or opportunity to become children of Abraham, children of God, whom Abraham represented in a figure.  “I have made thee a father of many nations (Gen. 17:5; Rom. 4:17), said the Lord to Abraham - “In becoming thy seed shall all the nations of the earth bless themselves.”  These will be blessed under the New Covenant, an arrangement whereby the Abrahamic Covenant, will be fulfilled as relates to Israel and to all.

The Abrahamic Covenant, then, embraces all the other Covenants, those Covenants being merely different features of God’s arrangements by which the work implied in the great Abrahamic Covenant or promise is to be accomplished.

As we have elsewhere previously shown, Abraham took another wife, after the death of Sarah - Keturah.  By her he had many sons and daughters.  Thus the New Covenant is typed and its grand work of bringing many to life - to “the liberty of the sons of God.” (Rom 8:19,21)

“IN THE VALLEY OF THE SHADOW”

Sister Helen Ryde Thompson of Downey, CA passed away on June 24, 2005.  She was 85 years old.  Sister Helen had requested that Brother Carnegie conduct the service, which he did.  She had Youthful Worthy hopes and she served the Lord faithfully.  We trust that the Lord will remember her in the Kingdom, and grant her a reward.  We will remember her fondly and all the correspondence we had with her.  Our condolences go out to her family and friends.

NO. 576 THE DIVINE SCROLL

by Epiphany Bible Students

“Who is worthy?”

Rev. 5:2

The words of our text are a part of the proclamation represented as being made throughout heaven: “Who is worthy to open the book [the Scroll] and to loose the seals thereof?”  The book in this case seems symbolically not to represent the Bible, but the Divine Plan, with its times and seasons.  The Bible is indeed a record, but God had the plan before the Bible was written.  He had this plan from the very beginning.  He had not disclosed it to the angels - not even to the Logos.  Nor did He disclose its time features fully to our Lord Jesus while He was in the flesh.  And after His resurrection Jesus spoke of these times and seasons as things “which the Father hath put in his own power.” (Acts 1:7)

Is there any secret in connection with the Divine Plan?  Are not all of God’s arrangements so plain that “a wayfaring man, though unlearned, need not err therein.” (Isa. 35:8)  Are not all of the steps of the plan of salvation so simple that even a child may understand them?

Oh, no! very evidently not; for every-where we find the utmost diversity of opinion respecting the Divine Plan.  There is now among Christian sects a great ecumenical movement, their goal being one universal Church.  However, among the people them-selves there are still many theories being brought forward every day, so that sects, cults and groups are multiplying rapidly with people accepting any kind of nonsense, rather than the truth of the Divine Plan.  Beside this, there are so many theologians, college professors and doctors of divinity who are in dispute that unlearned “wayfaring man” has many chances to err in his endeavor to grasp the Divine Plan.  Also, there are a great variety of heathen theories, which are utterly false.

In harmony with this is the fact that all the prophets have spoken more or less obscurely and in parables, not excepting the Great Prophet, our Lord Jesus, of whom it is written, that “he taught the people in parables and darks sayings” - “and without a parable spake he not unto the people.” (Matt 13:14)

In Rev. 5:1 God’s Word is represented by a book (scroll), written on the inside and outside and sealed with seven seals.  The things written on the outside represent the easy and simple things of the Bible, like histories, most of its precepts and exhortations and some of its doctrine, while those written on the inside sealed by seven seals represent the secret features of the Bible, none of which can be understood until in due time Jesus opens the secreting seals and expounds the thing therein to the elect people of God (Rev. 5:9).

The scroll is a forceful representation of the Divine Plan originally existing only in the mind of God, and which could not be made known to men until some one was found worthy to open the seals and display it to view.  But “no one in heaven nor in earth was able to open the scroll, neither to look thereon,” until one came whom the Revelator describes as “The lion [strong one] of the Tribe of Judah, the root of David,” of whom the testimony is given - “Thou art worthy to take the scroll and to open the seals thereof, for thou wast slain and has redeemed to God by the blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; and hast made them unto our God a kingdom and priesthood; and they shall reign on the earth.” (Rev.5:1-5,9,10)

The fact that God had a plan relating to the fallen race had been intimated to Abraham.  God had declared to Abraham unconditionally that He would bless the world of mankind.  He also pointed out later in the types and shadows of the Law certain features of the way by which He would bless the world.  He declared that there would be a Redeemer; but who the Redeemer would be was kept a secret.  Although both angels and men desired to know they were not permitted the knowledge.  The prophets spoke by inspiration some things concerning this Redeemer, but they knew not the meaning thereof.

The mystery of the Divine Plan, hidden in parables, in figures and in symbols from the world, and from the nominal Christian - hidden from all except the fully consecrated children of God - is most beautifully symbolized in the Book of Revelation.  As therein recounted, John was shown a vision a symbolic panorama, illustrative of the subject.  The heavenly glories were symbolized and the Father shown seated upon the throne of His glory, holding in His right hand a scroll sealed with seven seals.  This was the mystery, the secret of the Lord, unknown to any one but Himself - His plan for the salvation of the world.  John in the symbol hears the proclamation, “Who is worthy to open the book and loose the seals!” - of the great Divine Plan, wonderful for its wisdom and love, and its lengths and breadths and depths and heights past human comprehension - that he may open and execute it!  A silence follows, and John fearing that this signified that none would be found worthy, and that hence the Divine Plan would never be fully revealed, and therefore could not be fully executed, wept much.  But in symbol the angel again touched him and said, “Weep not! For the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, the ‘root of David,’ hath prevailed to open the Book, and loose the seven seals thereon.” (Rev. 5:5)

In due time the Logos was sent forth.  He was a loyal Son before He was sent.  He undertook to do the Father’s will, not yet knowing what it would cost to be the Messiah; for God had kept these things secret.  He manifested His faith, His trust.  He delighted to do the Father’s will, even to the taking of a lower nature.  And so He humbled Himself from the glorious condition in which He was and took upon Himself the human nature, became a man - a perfect man, not a sinful man.  Our Lord did this in order to carry out the great program which the Father had in His own mind and which He had not revealed to any other.

Great was the favor bestowed upon the Strong One of the Tribe of Judah, in being permitted to open the seals - to carry out and make manifest the grand designs of infinite love - and great is the privilege of those who are permitted to look thereon as the seals are opened.

When Jesus reached the age of thirty years, the earliest age at which He could present himself to God, under the Law, He went to Jordan and made a consecration of Himself with the determination to do everything that was in the Father’s plan - everything that typically and prophetically had been written in the Holy Scriptures concerning Himself.  “Lo, I come [in the volume of the book it is written of me] to do thy will, O God.” “I delight to do thy will, O my God; yea, the law is within my heart,” was His expression as recorded (Heb 10:7,9; Psa.40: 6,8).

This was our Lord’s consecration.  His human nature became His sacrifice.  He laid down His life.  He did not finish laying it down at Jordan; but so as His will was concerned, it was given there.  He there became the Priest, the great High Priest, His flesh being typed by the bullock of sin-offering, sacrificed on Israel’s Day of Atonement.  During the three and a half years of His ministry He carried out this sacrificing satisfactorily, and everything that the Father had given him to do was finished at the cross.

THE DEEP THINGS UNFOLDED AT JORDAN

Our Lord Jesus received the anointing of the Holy Spirit when He came up out of the water at his baptism.  Then the heavens were opened unto Him.  The higher things, which He had not previously understood, became clear.  The Scriptures were unfolded to His view.  He knew he was going up to Jerusalem to be crucified.  He knew that He would be betrayed by one of His chosen disciples, and he knew which of them would be the betrayer. He knew these things because He had been begotten of the Holy Spirit and accepted of God as a Son on the Divine plane.

During the three and a half years He was the Messiah, the Sent of God.  He was the Lion of the Tribe of Judah.  He had sacrificed His will, but this was not sufficient.  God wished Him to sacrifice not only His will, but actually to lay down His human life.  And God purposed to prove Him by certain crucial tests.  So He was “tempted in all points like as we are; yet without sin.” (Heb 4:15)  When all His testings were completed at His death on the cross, God gave Him a name in which all should bow, both in heaven and in earth.

Here the words of our text find their answer.  The inquiry compassed the period from before Jesus came into the world up to His resurrection from the grave.  God had given the most honorable One of all the host of heaven the first opportunity to prove His worthiness to loose the scroll of God’s great plan, and to fulfill its provisions.  He was given this opportunity because, as the First-born of Jehovah, He had the right to the first privilege of service, and He did not allow the privilege to go by.  He accepted it.  He was faithful, He humbled himself to human nature, and thus He became the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, of which tribe He was born as a man.  He did not have the title in His position as Logos.  It was as the son of Mary that He was the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, the Root of David (Rev. 5:5).

PROCLAIMED WORTHY BY THE ANGELS

Our Lord’s worthiness was not then proven.  It was not until He cried with His dying breath, “It is finished!” that the demonstration was complete.  All the way down from Adam to Jesus no one had been found worthy to open the great scroll.  But Jesus was now represented as slain, John the Revelator says, “I beheld and lo, a freshly slain Lamb.”  And myriads of Angels were heard proclaiming, “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain, to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory and blessing.” (Rev 5:12)

Jesus had not proven Himself worthy of this great honor when He made His consecration, but when He had finished His course in death He was then worthy to receive glory, honor and power.  After His resurrection and ascension the scroll was given into His hands to be opened.  This means that the Divine Plan as a whole was here made known to Him - for He already had knowledge of much of this - but all things were given to Him to unloose.  There had been some things that our Lord did not know.  He had said, “Of that day and hour [of His second coming] knoweth no man; no, not the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but my Father only.” (Mark 13:32)  A part of the plan was written on the outside of the scroll, and a part was written on the inside.  The things that were sealed were not proper to be understood by our Redeemer until He had received the all power, after His resurrection.  The execution of God’s plan was then given into His hands.

When our Lord Jesus had proven His loyalty to the Heavenly Father by His obedience, not only in humbling Himself to take man’s estate for the suffering of death, but also in His obedience “even unto death” and still further, “even unto the [ignominious] death of the cross,” then and thereby He did prove Himself worthy of every confidence and trust.  As the Apostle declares, “Wherefore him hath God highly exalted and given him a name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, both of things in heaven and thing on earth.” (Phil. 2:9-11)  It is at this point that the picture we are considering (Rev. 5:9-13) shows our Lord Jesus as the Lamb that had been slain, before whom obeisance was made, and who was proclaimed, Worthy the Lamb:  “Thou art worthy to take the scroll and to open the seals thereof, because thou wast slain, and has redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred and tongue and people and nation.”  Thus is pictured to us the high exaltation of the Heavenly Father’s representative, the “Messenger [servant] of the Covenant.”  Because of His humility and complete submission and obedience to the Father’s will He is proclaimed thenceforth the sharer of the Father’s throne, and by the Father’s own arrangement, the proclamation was made throughout the heavenly hosts, “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain, to receive power and riches, and wisdom, and strength and honor, and glory and blessing”; and finally “every creature” shall catch the thought that Jehovah has very highly exalted His Only Begotten Son, even to association with Himself in the Kingdom, and shout their approval, saying, “The blessing and the honor, and the glory, and the power be unto him that sitteth upon the throne [of the universe - Jehovah] and unto the Lamb, forever and ever!”  No wonder, then that we are instructed that thenceforth all men shall honor the exalted Son even as they honor the Father who thus highly exalted Him (John 5:23).

GRADUAL OPENING OF THE SEALS

Then came the opening of the seals; disclosing of one after another of the various features connected with the Divine purpose.  Each seal as it was loosed permitted the scroll as a whole to open a little wider, and a little wider, thus permitting “the mystery of God” to be a little more clearly discerned.

The opening of the seals has progressed during all the Gospel Age.  The whole plan of God is represented in this book - the scroll.  It has required all of the present age and will require all of the next age to complete the plan.  The Plan of God includes the “restitution of all things, which God hath spoken.” (Acts 3:21)  We are now able to see these wonderful things and to tell about them, because each of the seals as it has been opened has made the plan a little clearer.  We may suppose that the Lord Jesus was made aware of all its features after His ascension to the presence of Jehovah.  We who are God’s people are seeking to know these things more and more fully.  The Master declared that as the Father revealed them unto Him, so would He reveal them unto us; but this revelation has been gradual, as the successive seals have been broken.

But, we must remember, as stated above, that this scroll is not the literal book which we call the Bible.  It is the Divine Plan which was formed long before the Bible existed as a written book.  The opening of the seals is the revealing by Jesus; “That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.” (Matt. 13:35)

A final thought revelatory of the wisdom displayed in God’s plan, i.e., the gradual and long-drawn-out manner of its giving and of its becoming due.  As Isaiah 28:10 puts it, so far as the faithful are concerned it is: “Precept upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little.”  Every part of the seven parts of the Bible came so.  Search its doctrines, ethics, promises, exhortations, prophecies, histories, and types, and every one of each one’s separate features, in the acts of their giving and acts of their clarifying, have been gradual and long-drawn-out.  No feature of any of these seven parts is discussed completely in any one place - it is in every one of such features: “here a little, there a little.”  First in its giving then in its clarification.  As consummate skill and wisdom are displayed in putting the whole plan there, but in most disorderly, i.e., scattered, disconnected way, so consummate skill and wisdom are displayed in giving it all, with no part lacking, however, here a little, there a little.  In its giving it is as if billions of letters, each on a separate piece of paper, were confusedly, disjointedly and at different times thrown together so as to form an immense incoherent pile, then blown by the wind into forming the most beautiful sublimely composed epic ever written.  When we contemplate the manifold wisdom of God as displayed in His Plan, well may we cry out in the language of St. Paul, used as a certain feature of that Plan, Israel’s relation to it, in Romans 11:33-36: “O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are His judgments, and His ways past finding out [by the non-elect]! For who [of the non-elect] hath known the mind of the Lord?  Or who hath been his counselor?  Or who hast first given to him, and it shall recompensed unto him again?  For of him and through him, and to him, are all things [of the plan], to whom be glory for ever, Amen.”

Who will say that the pleasure of Jehovah is now being fulfilled in the world?  Who will say that the present reign of Sin and Death is the good pleasure of the God of love and mercy, who declares that he has no pleasure in our dying? (Ezek. 18:32)  Only in a very limited sense could it be said that any part of Jehovah’s pleasure has been accomplished by our Redeemer.  It pleased the Father to put the Son to grief, to permit the dire troubles and calamities, which came upon Him in connection with our redemption.  This does not signify that the Lord took pleasure in the suffering of the Redeemer, but that it was the Lord’s Plan that our Redeemer should be tried, tested and thus prepared for the glorious honors of His exaltation and for the great work which He is yet to accomplish for the uplift of mankind.  It was the Father’s Plan rather than the Father’s pleasure that our Lord fulfilled in His obedience even unto death, even the death of the cross.

So far as the world is concerned the pleasure of Jehovah God has not in any sense of the word been accomplished in them. The Apostle reminds us that “the whole creation is groaning and travailing in pain together” - “waiting for the manifestation of the sons of God.” (Rom. 8:19,22)  This surely is not the pleasure of God - the sufferings of His creatures; for although He may be pleased that His consecrated, spirit-begotten ones should suffer for a time, this is because the sufferings in their case are working out for them a far more exceeding eternal weight of glory (2 Cor. 4:15).  But in respect to the world this is different.  The weight of sin, degradation and sorrow is upon the world, and Divine displeasure is still their portion.  They have not yet heard of the only name given under Heaven and amongst men whereby they must be saved.  As the Apostle declares, the whole world lieth in the Wicked One (1 John 5:19).  God’s pleasure respecting them has not been accomplished.

As to what the Divine Plan or purpose or pleasure is on the world’s behalf we must note the prophetic declaration of the Oath-bound promise made to Abraham, “In thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.”  The blessing of all the families of the earth is still future.

Referring to that time when Jehovah’s pleasure shall prosper in the hands of the Messiah, The Christ, the Apostle tells us that He must reign until He shall have put all enemies under His feet.  He also explains to us that all the power and authority of that Reign will be granted to The Christ by the Heavenly Father, and that at the close of that Millennial Reign The Christ shall deliver up the Kingdom to God even the Father, that He may be all in all - to Him who did put all things under Christ, whose was the Plan, whose was the Power, and to whom shall be glory forever.   (1 Cor. 15:28)

SOME THINGS UNSEALED BY THE WORTHY ONE

We wish to enumerate some of the things that Our Lord has revealed to us from the Divine Scroll.  We will not be able to relate them all, nor will we have them in any particular order.

The Apostle Paul refers to the Divine Plan - scroll - “To enlighten all as to what is the administration of the secret, which has been concealed from the ages…according to a plan of the ages, which He formed for the Anointed Jesus our Lord.” (Eph. 3:9-11, Dia.)

The Bible reveals this secret plan of salvation for all mankind gradually in a number of steps throughout the ages.  The secret is expertly kept until it should be made plain by giving “here a little, and there a little.” (Isa. 28:10)  Each new disclosure is given in its exact “due time.”

However, the entire plan rested in the person of Jesus Christ, and He was chosen for that purpose before the foundation of the world (1 Pet. 1:20).

The Plan begins with creation.  The secret was revealed that the six creative days were not 24-hour days, but are epochs of 7,000 years.  In the sixth day man was created in God’s own image and likeness.

Another indication of a Plan was given in the Abrahamic Covenant.  “In thee and thy seed shall all families be blessed.” (Gen. 12:3)  Then there was the Law Covenant.  But there is a New Covenant to take the place of the Old (Law) Covenant.

Both the Abrahamic Covenant and the New Covenant are styled “The Everlasting Covenant,” in contrast with the Law Covenant, which passed away, a failure because of unprofitableness (Heb 7:18).  All nations, peoples are blessed under the New Covenant.   Therefore, they shall be brought gradually to an appreciation and enlightenment of the Divine Plan.

We learned from the Worthy One of the Ransom, Resurrection, the elect classes and Restitution for the world.

He also brought to light that The Christ is many members, both Head and Body (1 Cor. 12:12).

These are only a few of the secrets revealed to us from the Scroll by the Worthy One, and there will be more to come.  With the death of the apostles the cannon of the Scripture closed, because God had there given a full and complete revelation of His plan for man’s salvation, though some of it was in a condensed form which has since expanded and unfolded and will continue to expand and shine more until the perfect day (Prov. 4:18), the Millennial Day, has been fully ushered in.  St. Paul expresses this thought clearly when he declares that the Holy Scriptures are able to make wise unto salvation, and that they are sufficient.

Brethren, beloved in Christ, realizing that our God has hitherto counted us worthy to look upon the wondrous scroll of His great Plan, which has been unsealed for us by Jesus our Lord, let us continue to prove ourselves worthy to look therein and comprehend the glorious things of His Word, by faithfulness, obedience and loyalty to His plan in everything!  Let our appreciation continually increase for our wondrous privilege in being permitted to share this blessed ministry of bearing Divine Truth to other hungry hearts, that they also may rejoice in the Lord and in the power of His might!

GOD IN NATURE

THE spacious firmament on high,
With all the blue, ethereal sky,
And spangled heavens, a shining frame,
Their great Original proclaim:
The unwearied sun, from day to day,
Does his Creator's power display;
And publishes to every land
The work of an Almighty hand.

Soon as the evening shades prevail,
The moon takes up the wondrous tale;
And nightly, to the listening earth,
Repeats the story of her birth;
While all the stars that 'round her burn,
And all the planets in their turn,
Confirm the tidings as they roll,
And spread the truth from pole to pole.

What though, in solemn silence, all
Move 'round this dark terrestrial ball,--
What though no real voice nor sound
Amid their radiant orbs be found,--
In reason's ear they all rejoice,
And utter forth a glorious voice,
Forever singing as they shine,
"The hand that made us is Divine."

QUESTION OF GENERAL INTEREST

QUESTION - Were the Ten Commandments a perpetual law or were they nailed to the cross?

ANSWER    - The Ten Commandments were not nailed to the cross at all.  They were given to the Jew, and they are still upon the Jew to this day.  The covenant which God made with Israel He has not repudiated.  Their Law Covenant will finally be merged into the New Covenant.  Their blessings promised through the prophets will not come by them through their Law Covenant.  The Lord said, “But not by thy covenant.” (Ezek. 16:61)  Israel’s old covenant will cover them until they are brought under the new mediator of the new covenant, Christ Jesus the Head, and the Church His Body.  In proportion to the Jews’ endeavor to keep the law of the Ten Commandments they have had, and will have, blessings from God.

Christians are not under the law of the Ten Commandments, given only to Israel at Sinai; but we have always been, and all of God’s creatures everywhere are, under the spirit of the Ten Commandments to the extent that they know them.  This spirit of the law was expressed by the Lord Jesus when He said that the law is briefly comprehended in two commandments: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, mind, soul and strength.”  Every Christian is under that commandment.  The angels are under that commandment.  All of God’s creatures who live in harmony with Him must know and love God with all of their heart, mind, soul and strength.  The second commandment, Jesus tells us, is that we shall love our neighbor as ourself.  All Christians are under that commandment.  Jesus and the apostles were under it and every angel is under it.  The Divine will for all God’s creatures was the spirit of that law of Israel, which will never pass away.

But to the Church has been given a third commandment.  Jesus said: “A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another as I have loved you.”  This is applicable only to the Church.  This command is not of universal application.  It is given only to the Church and for this Gospel Age.  We are not to love the world or the angels in this way, but merely one another.  How much shall we love the brethren?  To the extent of giving our life for them, as Jesus laid down His life for us.  We must cultivate that love if we would have God’s highest, grandest blessings.  Some may get into the Great Company without this degree of love, but all of those who get into the Body of Christ must love one another as Jesus loved them.  The apostle, speaking of how Christ died for us, says: “We also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.”  All of the “more than conquerors” will keep this our third commandment.  Thus only can we fulfill our “covenant by sacrifice.”

What was it that Jesus nailed to the cross?  It was the Law Covenant.  It was the covenant or agreement, that God made with the Jews, under which they had some hope of becoming a part of the elect Church.  If they could keep God’s perfect law it would demonstrate that they were perfect beings.  In that case they could have been transferred to the “covenant by sacrifice” without being redeemed.  Of course, they could not keep the works of the Law Covenant - that covenant which required all the good work a perfect man could render.  God knew this, but the Israelites did not.  God’s covenant provided that if they could do those things they might have everlasting life, and not need to be redeemed.  When Jesus came and kept all the Law Covenant’s requirements, he became heir to the promises of the Law Covenant.  Thus all hopes by others under that covenant were at an end.  Any blessings under that Law Covenant could only come through Christ - in no other way.  It was that covenant that was nailed to the cross.  Some of the Jews, the   apostles and others, finally came to realize that their only way of getting these blessings which the Sinai Law offered would be by coming to Christ and becoming dead with Him - suffering with Him.

Those who were Gentiles become part of spiritual Israel, and participate in the blessings natural Israel had hoped to get; but this was received through Christ under the terms of His covenant of sacrifice; “Gather My saints together unto Me, those who have made a covenant with Me by sacrifice.” (Psa. 50:5)  (What Pastor Russell Said, page 134,135, 1916)

NO. 575: COVENANT RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD ESSENTIAL TO LIFE EVERLASTING

by Epiphany Bible Students

No. 575

God is not in covenant relationship with the brute creation; for to them He has made no promises, although He has made a general provision for their needs.  But we may understand that with all His intelligent creation He has a covenant, or agreement, to the effect that so long as they will do His will they shall possess life.  Because of violation of that arrangement, the fallen angels were cast off, “reserved in chains of darkness unto the judgment of the great day” (Jude 6), to receive their final punishment.  When Adam and Eve were disobedient, they violated this covenant, and came under the sentence of death.  “They like men [Hebrew Adam], have transgressed the covenant; there have they dealt treacherously against me.” (Hosea 6:7, margin)

Because of Adam’s transgression, the world is not in covenant relationship with God in any sense of the word.  On the contrary, they are aliens, strangers, foreigners (Eph. 2:11-13).  To some extent God brought Abraham back into covenant relationship, but not fully so.  To the nation of Israel He made certain promises in the form of a Law Covenant, to the effect that whoever kept that covenant would thereby demonstrate his worthiness to receive God’s blessing promised to Abraham - that through him should all the families of the earth be blessed (Gen. 12:3).

The Law Covenant was given to the Jewish nation; Moses was the mediator, for it was impossible to make the covenant with Israel directly.  Although they were unable to keep that covenant because of inherited weaknesses of the flesh, yet it brought them a measure of blessing, as St. Paul points out (Rom. 7:7).  While it lifted Israel above the degradation into which the Gentiles were falling, nevertheless it did not bring the blessing for which they longed.  It did not remove the death penalty - it did not give them life.

In the clear light now shining for the people of God, we see that the Law Covenant was only a type of a better covenant to be made with Israel after the Church of Christ has been glorified; that Moses himself was only a type of a better Mediator; that the sacrifices of the Law were only types of the “better sacrifices” mentioned in Hebrews 9:23, and that their priesthood was a type of the Royal Priesthood of the Gospel Age (Heb. 7:27).

In the Scriptures, the words covenant and promise are used synonymously.  The children of Israel were under the Abrahamic Covenant long before they entered into the Law Covenant.  They are still under those covenants.  St. Paul says, “God hath not cast away his people whom he foreknew.” (Rom 11:2)  Then He proceeds to say that after the elect Church has been gathered from among the Gentiles, the favor of God will return to Israel; for they are still beloved for the fathers’ sake.  The fathers of Israel are the patriarchs Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.  The Jews are, therefore, under the Abraham Covenant (Rom. 11:25-28).

ISRAEL’S COVENANT RELATIONSHIP ACTUAL

An actual covenant relationship is one that is fully established - not merely suggested, or proposed, but accomplished.  As Israel approached Mt. Sinai, God proposed to make a covenant with them.  When all was in readiness, the covenant was made through Moses as the mediator.  The work of mediation was twofold; the first part was the sprinkling of the law, representing the satisfaction of Justice; the second part was the sprinkling of the people, representing the bringing of the people into covenant relationship with God.  That covenant was then fully made, and has remained in operation ever since (Ex. 24:3-8).

With the Israelites, God was making a covenant which was to last for centuries.  It was good for only one year at a time, however.  For the first year the people were in harmony with God, but at the end of that time the cancellation of sins ceased; for the blood of bulls and of goats cannot take away sin.  The whole arrangement was only a type.  At the end of that first year, the Day of Atonement was inaugurated, and sacrifices were made for another year.  The fact that the atonement day sacrifices were repeated year by year shows that they were efficacious for only a year at a time, and so never really took away sin (Heb. 10:1-4).

After the Day of Atonement, the people made various kinds of offerings.  Some of these seem to typify the presentation of the worshiper himself to God, as an indication that he wished to do the will of Jehovah.  Others were for sin-offerings, indicating that the worshiper realized that there has been a measure of willfulness in his conduct.  So rigid are the requirements of the Law Covenant that only one Jew, the Lord Jesus Christ, was able to keep them.  This He could do because He was perfect, and the Law is the measure of a perfect man’s full ability.

That the Israelites were in covenant relationship with God through Moses, the mediator of their covenant, is demonstrated by the fact that Moses said, “He hath declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even the ten commandments.” (Deut. 4:13)  Therefore the Jew is bound by the law as long as he lives (Rom. 7:1).  Although the Law Covenant is not intended to be an everlasting arrangement with the Jew, yet the only ones who have been able to get from under it are those who have come into Christ; the remainder cannot rid themselves of it.  But the days draw nigh when the Lord God will make a New Covenant with them through a new mediator, The Christ, who will assist them to keep the Law satisfactorily and thus to be delivered from the evil features of their covenant.

At the close of the Babylonish captivity, the Prophet Daniel asked the Lord for an explanation of the prophecies relating to His people.  The answer to his prayer is given in detail.  “Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy.” (Dan 9:24-27)

For an elucidation of this prophecy, the reader is referred to Studies in the Scriptures, Vol. II, Study III.  All these things were to be done in those seventy weeks.  Of this period of time, we find that the seventieth week was the most critical, for it was the week during which Messiah was to confirm the covenant.  In our Study III, we show that this week began October, A.D. 29 and closed October, A.D. 36 - from the beginning of our Lord’s ministry until the conversion of Cornelius, the first Gentile to receive the Holy Spirit.

THE COVENANT CONFIRMED FOR ONE WEEK

During that period of seven years, God bestowed special favor upon the Jews.  At the beginning of that week of years, our Lord, who was then thirty years of age, presented Himself to God as a sacrifice.  This presentation was the first feature of the antitypical Atonement Day work, and corresponded to the sacrifice of the bullock in the type.  Our Lord began the antitypical sacrifices; as St. Paul says, “Then said he, ‘Lo, I come to do thy will, O God.’  He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.” (Heb. 10:9)  Our Lord there began to take away the type and to establish the antitype.  It was necessary not only to begin the work with the antitypical bullock, but to complete it and take His place as the antitypical Moses, so to speak.  This He did not accomplish until after His death on the cross.

Many other features of that antitypical Atonement Day work are not yet completed.  It was a part of the atonement for the High Priest to offer the Lord’s goat and to take its blood into the Most Holy and to sprinkle it there.  It was also a part of the Atonement Day work for him to come out and confess the sins of the people on the scape-goat, and a still further part for him to bless the people.  During our Lord’s ministry, He fulfilled various features of the types.  At Calvary His work of sacrificing Himself was finished, and the Divine acceptance of that sacrifice was manifested.

The Prophet’s statement that in the midst of the week Messiah would cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease implies that our Lord would there terminate the efficacy of the typical work for Israel as a people, and that they were rejected from Divine favor at the time that they crucified Him.  A few days before His death, our Lord had said, “Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.” (Matt. 23:38)  This rejection seems to have been symbolized when the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom, an indication of a breaking down, rather than of an opening up.

This rejection of the Jewish nation does not indicate the end of their Law Covenant.  To the Church of Christ, who have been given the privilege of understanding the deep things of the Spirit of God, it appears that the efficacy of the typical sacrifices, which were offered year by year continually ceased at the death of our Lord; and that since that time, as a nation they have had no Divine favor; but that the only ones who have had favor since then are those who have come out of Moses into Christ.  The typical sacrifices continued until the time when Christ died, for the reason that Jesus Himself was under the Law, a part of which He fulfilled, and no feature of which can pass away until all has been fulfilled (Matt. 5:17,18).

After our Lord’s ascension, it was possible for greater work to be done than ever before.  Under the Lord’s blessing, thousands of Jews were gathered into the Gospel garner within comparatively a few days.  The work of our Lord was cut short nationally, but it increased the opportunity of the Jews individually.  There were only five hundred Jews who believed on Jesus until after His death, when there were thousands added to the number (1 Cor. 15:6; Acts 2:41).  During the three and a half years following our Lord’s death, God did not recognize the Gentiles, for He had said that He would give seventy weeks to the Jews, and therefore He allowed no favor to go to the Gentiles until that period had expired.

After the expiration of the seventy weeks of years set apart for Israel, the Gospel began to go to the Gentiles, to gather from among them “a people for his name.” (Acts 15:13-18)  During this Gospel Age, the antitypical Atonement work has been progressing.  Our Lord has already offered the antitypical bullock in the sacrifice of Himself.  Since Pentecost, He has been offering the antitypical goat - the Church class.  This work has been in progress for more than eighteen hundred years.  As soon as it shall have been finished, the blood will be taken into the Most Holy, to sprinkle the Mercy-Seat and to “make atonement for all the people,” as in the type.

THE COVENANT OF SACRIFICE

The Abrahamic Covenant, as it was given to Abraham, is a complete covenant, whose provisions include all mankind; for it reads, “In thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.” (Gen. 12:3; 28:14)  Its promise is to the seed: (1) Jesus; (2) The Christ, Head and Body; (3) the earthly seed through them.  Its provisions extend to all who have the faith of Abraham.  The promise of God was that a blessing shall come to all the families of the earth.  This promise was confirmed by an oath on the part of God, so that by two immutable things - the oath and the promise of God - the heirs of the promise may be sure of its fulfillment (Heb. 6:13-18).

The seed of Abraham, which is to bless all the families of the earth, was intended to be a spiritual seed.  Since Abraham and his posterity were natural men, the only way by which they could become the spiritual seed was by the sacrifice of the earthly nature and the attaining of the spirit nature.  The opportunity for making this sacrifice was first given to our Lord Jesus.  By carrying out His covenant of sacrifice, He became the Head of the seed which is to bring the blessing (Psa. 50:5; 40:7-10).

During the Gospel Age, Jehovah has been selecting the members of this spiritual seed, that they may lay down their human life and earthly interests in order to attain to the spirit nature.  The selection of this seed has been the work of the Gospel Age.  Soon the seed will be all gathered; then the work of blessing the natural seed will begin, and through them the blessing will subsequently spread to all nations, as these shall accept the Divine favor.

The Church will always be in covenant relationship with the Father.  The fact that He calls them sons implies that they are bound to Him (John 1:12).  Every father is in covenant relationship with his children, and they with him.  Every child has a responsibility to its father, and the father to the child.  The fact that God has received the Lord Jesus and the Church as sons (Heb. 3:6) signifies that they are in covenant relationship with Him.  St. Paul says, “We are the children of God; and if children, then heirs.” (Rom. 8:16,17)  His statement not only implies that relationship, but proves it; for the sons have a right to the things which the father has provided for his children.

All who hunger and thirst after righteousness (Matt. 5:6), all whose souls long for God ”as the hart pants after the water brook” (Psa. 42:1), and who, have found Him, have consecrated themselves to Him - these have received the anointing of the Holy Spirit, witnessing with their spirit that they are sons of God (Rom. 8:14-16).  As anointed sons these can discover in themselves the worthy traits of true sons - loyalty, zeal, energy, discretion, faithfulness, obedience.

There are, however, conditions attached to this covenant of sacrifice; there are certain requirements which must be fulfilled.  All must become partakers of the sufferings of Christ, if they would participate with Him in the glories to follow.  But the arrangements for keeping our contract are complete in Christ.  Therefore if we put ourselves under His care, this covenant will be everlasting with us, and we shall have “the sure mercies of David.” (Isa. 55:3)

COVENANT RELATIONSHIP TO BE RE-ESTABLISHED WITH HUMANITY

In Jeremiah 31:31-33, we read, “I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah… after those days.”  The expression, “those days,” we understand to refer to Israel’s “seven times” of punishment, promised by the Lord for the violation of their Law Covenant.  This New Covenant is to be made with Israel alone; for God never purposed to make a covenant with the Gentiles.  The New Covenant will properly be so called because it will take the place of the old Law Covenant, which God made with Israel and which was broken by them.  After Israel shall have been fully established under their New Covenant, all other nations will be privileged to come into this relationship after the manner set forth in the Law.  All the world will eventually be blessed thereby.

The New Covenant, then, is to be made with such of Abraham’s descendants as are able to receive it.  Since the people are not worthy to enter directly into relationship with God, that covenant must have a mediator.  The Mediator is the Lord Jesus Christ, and the Church, His Body.  The Scriptures indicate that the Mediator is nearly completed.

The Word of God distinguishes between a covenant and its mediator.  A covenant does not go into operation until after it has been fully mediated.  When Moses mediated the Law Covenant, he first offered sacrifices; then he took the blood of the animals and, dividing it into two parts, sprinkled both the Book of the Law and the people (Ex. 24:4-8; Heb. 9:9-24).  After he had done this, the Law Covenant was in force; and it will continue until superseded by its antitype, the New Covenant.

The Mediator of the New Covenant will be The Christ.  For more than eighteen hundred years, our Lord has been offering the great antitypical sacrifices of Himself and His Church.  As soon as He will have finished making application of the blood, he will have made satisfaction for the sins of the world.  This act will correspond to the sprinkling of the book by Moses.  Divine Justice having accepted this arrangement, the Mediator will antitypically sprinkle the people; that is, He will show them how to come back into full accord with God.

The New covenant will begin to swallow up the old Law Covenant as soon as the Kingdom is established.  The Scriptures indicate that the first to receive it will be the Ancient Worthies.  Raised from the dead to human perfection, they will form the nucleus of the new arrangement in the earth.  Next in order will be those who have been known as Christians, but who have not been consecrated to death, and Jews who have been consecrated to the Law, but who have been blinded.  Gradually the light will come to all who love righteousness and hate iniquity.  Sprinkled from all sympathy with evil, they will make their declaration of full loyalty to God.  In due time this light will spread to all kindreds and tongues and nations.

CHANGE OF HEART IN THE MILLENNIUM

The Prophet Jeremiah, speaking of the New Covenant (31:34), says, “They shall know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”  The sins and iniquities of Israel will no longer be remembered against them.  Christ will have appeared on their behalf and made satisfaction for their sins.  They will then be as free from original sin as the Gospel Church is.  The atonement of the Lord Jesus Christ is the sufficiency for all (1 John 2:2).

The Prophet Ezekiel tells us that during the next Age the hearts of mankind will be changed.  He says, “Thus saith the Lord God… A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you; and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.” (Ezek. 36:22-27)  This change of heart is entirely aside from the making of the New Covenant.  It will take a thousand years to remove the stoniness out of the hearts of mankind and to make them stand without a mediator.  Those who receive everlasting life must attain this condition; for all of God’s creatures who would live forever must keep His Law perfectly.

During the Millennium, God will not recognize the people, because of their imperfection, their weakness; but all of their dealings will be through the Mediator, until they shall have been brought up to perfection.  At the end of the thousand years, they will be delivered up to the Father, unblamable before Him (1 Cor. 15:24).  God will then receive them as sons, heirs of the earthly blessings which He has provided for mankind - the things given to Adam.  The very moment when the merit of Christ is applied for the world is the same moment when they will be turned over to the Mediator.  Then they will be in covenant relationship with God, but only through the Mediator, until they shall have reached human perfection and shall enter into His relationship directly with the Father.

The New Covenant will continue everlastingly; and as it is proper to say that Moses mediated the Law Covenant, so we may say that Christ will mediate the New Covenant.  But it would not be proper to say that Moses is now the mediator of the Law Covenant; for a covenant does not need a mediator after it has been mediated.  So the New Covenant will need no Mediator after the thousand years.  But the title “Mediator” may belong to Christ to all eternity, just as one who has been a judge, ever after receives the title of “Judge.”

At the end of the thousand years, when the Messiah will have accomplished His work of Restitution, He will cease to act as Mediator.  But the covenant will continue to stand; for if that relationship with God were to be removed from the people, they would have no blessing of everlasting life.  That blessing depends upon covenant relationship with God.  Under the favorable conditions of the New Covenant, whosoever will may have an opportunity to become the children of The Christ, the seed of Abraham.

At the conclusion of the thousand years, the willing and the obedient receive the commendation, “Well done,” and will be accepted as fit for the condition of everlasting life on the human plane.  Those who prove to be unworthy of life will be destroyed in the Second Death.

NINE HAPPY HEADLINES

“Good news in our region remains annoyingly slim, which underscores just how amazing the finale to 2004 is turning out to be, as I write.

“We have been inundated with a flood of nonstop headlines that cannot fail to bring smiles to the faces of even our most hard-boiled Jeremiahs.

“A tour d’horizon reveals no less than nine most uncommon rays of sunshine, all coming rapid-fire.

Ding dong the witch is dead: Clearly, his lingering obstructionist presence spelled doom for anything remotely connected to ending violence or reopening the peace process.  The minute he headed south, however, new windows of opportunity opened.

“I don’t know if it will happen overnight; communism evaporated after the Berlin Wall fell.  But both parties are seriously expecting a scenario fueled more by talking than by suicide bomb attacks.

More President Bush: The vast majority of Israelis reflectively welcome four more years of Bush, Condi, Cheney, the whole neocon crew.  Ironically, the only scar from November’s elections was the incongruity of American Jews voting overwhelmingly against the candidate whom most of us view as the best friend Israel has had in the White House for decades.

“The fact that Israel is apparently not such a priority for American Jewish voters is frankly troubling.  Thank God for 50 million Evangelical voters, who see things a little more clearly than our own folks.

“Egypt: Suddenly, after all these years, a huge warming of relations.  Mubarak apparently wants to play a role again in defining the peace.

“He is pressuring the Palestinians to behave, lobbying moderate Arab regimes and suddenly he sent Israeli Druse prisoner Azzam Azzam home to Israel after eight years in a Cairo prison on trumped-up charges.

Iraq: Saddam’s fall has been followed by a can of worms, which may obscure the benefits in many American eyes, but Israelis enjoy a different perspective: No more Saddam means no more Scuds, no more strategic threat, and with no price paid by IDF engagement or losses, if one is permitted to say the indelicate.

“Whatever ultimately happens there, we have a well-deserved respite, be it short-range or more permanent.

Syria: Washington’s guardians of shock and awe are keeping a trained eye on Syria, and that is a very good thing.  Damascus knows that ‘regime change’ is not simply a hollow threat under a Bush White House.

“Syria has made cooing noises these 60 days about rekindling bilateral peace negotiations with Israel.  Serious or not, they are on the ropes and under scrutiny.  The U.S. and France have even joined to press the regime to withdraw from Lebanon.  The increasing isolation of Damascus can’t be bad for us.

Libya: Our old nemesis Muammar Gaddafi’s transmogrification into a kinder gentler nutcase dictator began earlier in 2004, but it continues.  He is now reaching out to Libyan Jewish expatriates.  Though Gaddafi is not a serious player, we do sleep just a little more soundly knowing all this ice-breaking is underway.

Iran: We have one sole implacable existential threat these days, and it’s the prospect of a nuclear Iran.  This issue is by far the most urgent potentially volatile challenge of all those mentioned herein - yet even here, there’s a tad of sunshine at the end of the tunnel.  Serious folks in Washington and Europe claim that the combination of mullahs with nukes is unacceptable.

“Longer range, the people are clearly moving seriously toward throwing the regime out and restoring some kind of democracy, which would automatically ameliorate the problem.  My bet: it may take five years, and it is a race in time, but I believe regime change will happen even in Iran.

Icing on the cake: What better, more profoundly uplifting way to conclude 2004 than yet another chartered flight of North American newcomers on December 28, courtesy of Nefesh B’Nefesh, with the Jewish Agency for Israel?

“More Americans and Canadians (about 3,000) came on aliya in 2004 than during any year since 1983!

“Did I promise nine happy headlines?  Almost forgot.  It’s raining…hard…outside my window at this very minute.

“The Water level in the Kinneret, the country’s main reservoir, is looking just fine, and its still 2004!”

WORLD COUNCIL OF CHURCHES CALLS FOR “BOYCOTT” OF ISRAEL

“PARIS - The world Council of Churches, the main body uniting non-Catholic Christians, encouraged members on February 22nd to sell off investments in companies profiting from Israeli control of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.  The Council’s Central Committee, meeting in Geneva, praised the United States Presbyterian Church for examining the possibility of divestment in Israel similar to the financial boycott it used against the apartheid regime in South Africa two decades ago.

“The Presbyterian threat, which echoes divestment debates at some U.S. universities, has set off a wave of dissent in the church and angered American Jewish leaders.

“But the Central Committee, in a document approved at a weeklong meeting at WCC headquarters that ended on February 22nd, highlighted the divestment push and encouraged other member churches to consider doing the same.

“It was not clear how many of the WCCs 342 Protestant and Orthodox member churches would heed the call.  ‘Multinational corporations have been involved in the demolition of Palestinian homes,’ the WCC statement said.  Human rights groups have urged Caterpillar Inc., the world’s largest maker of construction machinery, to stop selling bulldozers to the Israel Defense Forces, saying they are used to wreck innocent Palestinians’ homes in Gaza and the West Bank.

“Jewish groups are clearly upset.  ‘Instead of talking about peace, we’re talking about Presbyterians,’ David Elcott, director of inter-religious affairs for the American Jewish Committee, said this month.  ‘They have deflected conversation in a very negative way.’”

ACRE CRUSADER CITY UNCOVERED

“In a major historical find, sections of an 800-year old Crusader city have been uncovered beneath the Old City of Acre.  They will be opened to the public in June.  The 12th-13th century quarter, which housed the compound of the Knights of St. John, was discovered virtually intact underneath the Ottoman citadel, which was later used by the British as a prison.

“The areas includes a large chapel, streets and shops from the Crusader period, and further on, a dining hall and an immense courtyard, which had been previously uncovered.  Some of the original plaster on the wall in the quarter still has the engravings that the Crusaders made when they came to the Holy Land, including drawings of the boats they sailed on from Europe.

“Only 5% of the total Crusader city has been uncovered so far, with excavations still ongoing.  Tens of thousands of people lived in the Crusader city for nearly 200 years before it was conquered by the Mamelukes in 1291, who left it forlorn for a couple of centuries.

“A total of NIS 40 million [U.S. 9.2 million] has been invested in the four-year excavation and renewal project.”

BACKING THE BIBLE

“Just published evidence from a U.S.-directed archeological dig in Jordan further authenticates the Bible’s descriptions of the existence of the ancient nation of Edom during the eras of King David and his son, King Solomon.

“The full results of the 2002 excavation by a team of international scholars at the site of Khirbet en-Nahas (‘ruins of copper’ in Arabic), are reported in the current issue of the British journal, Antiquity, published last week.

“The new study, headed by the archeology Prof. Thomas Levy of University of California, San Diego, contradicts much contemporary scholarship claiming - on the basis of no physical evidence - that no Edomite state existed before the eighth century BCE.  Until the new discovery, many scholars said the Bible’s numerous references to ancient Israel’s interactions with Edom could not be valid.

“While previous investigations in Edom had been carried out in the Jordanian highland zone and put the rise of the Edomite kingdom during the eighth to sixth centuries BCE, the new archeological data from modern-day Jordan presents strong evidence for the involvement of Edom with neighboring ancient Israel as described in the Bible and indicates the existence of the biblical nation of Edom at least as early as the 10th century BCE when David and Solomon lived.

“The Edomite lowlands, home to a large copper ore zone, had been ignored by archeologist because of the logistical difficulties of working in the extremely dry and hot region.  But with an anthropological perspective and using high precision and radio carbon dating, the team showed evidence of two major phases of copper production - during the 12th to 11th centuries BCE and the 10th to ninth centuries BCE.

“The archeologists dug up evidence of construction of massive fortifications and industrial scale metal production activities, as well as more than 100 building complexes, Egyptian scarabs of a ‘walking sphinx’ and a hunting scene provide additional evidence of metal-working activities at the site in the period around 1200 to 900 BCE.  The researchers note in the journal article that these results ‘push back the beginnings of Edom 300 hundred years earlier than the current scholarly consensus and show the presence of complex societies, perhaps a kingdom, much earlier than previously assumed.’

“Excavations at Khirbet en-Nahas were part of the Jabal Hamrat Fidan Project and carried out under the auspices of the UC-San Diego and Jordan’s antiquities department.  Working under Levy, the international team included Russell Adams (of McMaster University of Canada): Mohammed Najjar (of Jordan) and Prof. Andreas Hauptmann (of the German Mining Museum).  The digs were funded by grants from the C. Paul Johnson Family Charitable Foundation and the university.”

 THAT SERVANT

For Him whom we truly adore

 Upon that lonely bed

A saint hath found his conflicts o’er,

And laid his dying head!

No gloom of fear hath glazed his eye,

For though loud noises roll

The Aurora of Eternity

Was rising on his soul.

And who so humbly walked as he,

A conqueror in the field,

Wreathing the rose of victory

Around his radiant shield?

Champion of Jesus! on that breast

From whence thy fervor flowed,

Thou hast obtained eternal rest -

The bosom of thy God!

NO. 574 ZIONISM - PART TWO

by Epiphany Bible Students

In our previous paper on this subject we stated that the Bible Students (meaning especially Pastor Russell) were actively interested in the Zionism question.  It is probable that that interest reached its pinnacle in the New York Hippodrome meeting on October 9, 1910; and we quote the following from Reprints 4700-4701 of the October 15, 1910 Watch Tower:

“Pastor Russell, of the Brooklyn Tabernacle… is considered one of the most eloquent Protestant preachers, and has gained a wide audience among the Hebrews by his sympathetic treatment of Jewish questions.  His sermon will be on ‘Zionism in Prophecy.’  His appearance before a representative mass meeting of Jews will be the first time that a well-known Protestant minister has been asked to deliver an address to such an assembly.

“Prominent Jewish citizens are arranging to make the meeting one of the largest gatherings ever held in this city.  The Yiddish newspapers and Jewish societies are represented on the committees in charge of arrangements.  Counselor Leo Wolfson, president of the Federated Roumanian Jews of America and Vice Grand Master of the I.W.S.O., when seen at his office, said:  ‘As one who is interested in the Jewish question and an old worker for the Zionistic movement, my attention was called to Pastor Russell’s interest in the Jews.

“‘I feel that an address by him on Zionism and Jewish prophets will present the question from a new point of view, and a point of view that I will be very willing to learn.  I am sure that Pastor Russell’s treatment of the question will be sympathetic, and will doubtless create wide-spread discussion of Zionism, its aims and ideals.’

“The committee in charge of the next Sunday’s meeting in the Hippodrome includes:  A. B. Landau, editor of The Warheit; Louis Lipsky, editor of the Maccabean; J. Pfeffer, editor of the Jewish Weekly; Abraham Goldberg, editor of the Yiddish Volk, and Leo Wolkson, editor of the Yiddish Spirit.

“A more interesting audience the Hippodrome never held, perhaps.  From all parts of the city came serious-minded Hebrews to hear what it was an alien, a Gentile, might have to say to them at a service, held during their week of feasting, Rosh Hoshana.  They were quiet, well-dressed, thinking men and women.

“Among them were many prominent figures of the Hebrew literary world.  Some of these escorted Pastor Russell to the Hippodrome in a motor car and then took places in the auditorium.  The literary men recognized the pastor as a writer and investigator of international fame on the subject of Judaism and Zionism.  Some of those present were Dr. Jacobs, editor of the American Hebrew; W. J. Solomon, of the Hebrew Standard; J. Brosky, associate editor of the same; Louis Lipsky, editor of the Maccabean; A. B. Landau, editor of the Warheit; Leo Wolfson, president of the Federation of Roumanian Societies; J. Pfeffer, of the Jewish Weekly; S. Daimont, editor of the Jewish Spirit; S. Goldberg, editor of the American Hebrew: J. Barrondess, of the Jewish Big Stick, and Goldman, editor of H’Yom, the only Jewish Daily.”

NO RELIGIOUS SYMOBLS THERE

“No Symbol of any religion at all greeted them when they gazed at the Hippodrome stage.  It was entirely empty save for a small lectern and three peace flags hanging from silken cords above.  One was the familiar white silk banner with the Stars and Stripes in its center, together with the words ‘Peace Among Nations’ in letters of gold.  Another bore a rainbow and the word ‘Pax.’  The third was a silken strip bearing miniature representations of all the nations’ flags.

“There were no preliminaries.  Pastor Russell, tall, erect and white-bearded, walked across the stage without introduction, raised his hand, and his double quartet from the Brooklyn Tabernacle sang the hymn, ‘Zion’s Glad Day.’  The members of this organization are Mrs. E. W. Brenneisen, Mrs. E. N. Detweiler, Miss Blance Raymond and Mrs. Raymond, Emil Hirscher, C. Myers, J. P. McPherson and W. J. Mockridge.  Their voices blended perfectly, and the hymn, without any instrumental accompaniment, was impressive.

“But still there seemed an air of aloofness about the audience.  They did not applaud, but sat silently watching the stalwart figure of the pastor.  When he began to talk, however, they gave him respectful attention.

“With a powerful, yet charming voice, that filled the great playhouse, the unconventional clergyman made his every word audible to the hearer.  His tone pleased their ears, his graceful gestures soon captivated their eyes, and in a few moments his apparently thorough knowledge of his subject appealed to their minds.  Though still silent, the 4,000 were ‘warming up’ to him.”

RESERVE AND DOUBT VANISH

“It was not long before all reserve, and all possible doubt of Pastor Russell’s entire sincerity and friendliness were worn away.  Then the mention of the name of a great Jew leader – who, the speaker declared, had been raised by God for the cause – brought a burst of applause.

“From that moment on the audience was his.  The Jews became as enthusiastic over him as though he had been a great rabbi or famous orator of their own religion.  He hailed them as one of the bravest races of the earth – having kept their faith through the persecutions and cruelties of all other people for thousands of years.  And he predicted that before very long they would be the greatest on earth – not merely a people, any longer, but a nation.  By a system of deductions based upon the prophecies of old, the pastor declared that the return of the kingdom of the Jews might occur at so near a period as the year 1914.  Persecutions would be over and peace and universal happiness would triumph. [After the Old Order has passed away.]

“As he brought his address to a conclusion the pastor raised his hand again to his choir.  This time they raised the quaint, foreign sounding strains of the Zion hymn, ‘Our Hope,’ one of the masterpieces of the eccentric East Side poet, Imber.

“The unprecedented incident of Christian voices singing the Jewish anthem came as a tremendous surprise.  For a moment the Hebrew auditors could scarcely believe their ears.  Then, making sure it was their own hymn, they first cheered and clapped with such ardor that the music was drowned out, and then, with the second verse, joined in by hundreds.  The discourse has already been reported in the newspapers which publish the sermons weekly.”

The foregoing is from That Servant’s pen published in the October 15, 1910, Watch Tower, and is not only for the benefit of those who are not familiar with these details, but also for those who are, just as we do with many doctrines; We quote from the two Messengers to “stir up your pure minds.”  (2 Peter 3:1)  “Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though you know them, and be established in the present truth.” (2 Peter 1:12)

It should be apparent, however, that our Pastor had a high regard for Zionism; and what he read about it in the prophecies has already seen much fulfillment, and will yet see more.  To quote the texts of Scripture bearing on the different phases of the subject would require much space; but whoever will take a copy of Strong’s Concordance, turn to page 528, noting the various cases in which the word Israel is used in the New Testament, will have what seems to be overwhelming evidence that the house of Israel was no longer regarded by Jesus and the Apostles as the ‘ten tribes’ merely, but, as it is expressed, ‘all Israel.’  Note especially the following texts:  Matt. 8:10; 10:6; 15:24,31; 27:9,42; Mark 12:29; 15:32; Luke 1:54,68; and especially v. 80; also 2:25,32,34; 24:21; also note carefully John 1:31,49; 3:10; 12:13; also Acts 2:22,36; 3:12; 4:10,27; 5:21,31,35; 13:16,24; 21:28; Rom. 9:6,31; 10:19; 11:25,26; 1 Cor. 10:18; Gal. 6:16; Eph. 2:12; Phil. 3:5; Heb. 8:8.

ZIONISM IN PROPHECY

“Many of our readers are aware that on the Editor’s return from Palestine last June he delivered a discourse entitled ‘Jerusalem.’  Many Jews were attracted by the theme and considerable interest amongst them was aroused.  That sermon and several others were published in Jewish papers.  Then came interviews with editors, etc., and, finally, an invitation to address a Jewish mass meeting at the New York Hippodrome, with signatures on three sheets of paper.

“Accordingly on Sunday, October 9, the Editor was met by a committee of five prominent Hebrews; Brother Rutherford also accompanied us.  The party went in automobiles.  The meeting was an enthusiastic one.  The number present was estimated at four thousand, and we were told that no finer representative class of Hebrews had ever before come together in one assemblage in New York.

“The address was well received, but apparently it was unfortunate that some of the pamphlets, entitled ‘Jewish Hopes and Prospects,’ were given away at the conclusion of the meeting.  Some of the Jews, without recognizing that the pamphlet was gotten out for our Christian readers, considered that by it we were endeavoring to entrap the Jews into Christianity.  And Christianity to the Jews, especially Catholicism, means many persecutions which have come against their people for many centuries.  Some understood the matter aright.  Others felt offended, and during the Editor’s absence in Europe last Fall he was attacked as a ‘missionary’ – which, in the Jewish mind, means everything mean, underhanded.

“On our return from Europe in November we corrected the misunderstanding, so far as possible, through the Jewish newspapers.  We informed them that we were not trying to ‘mission’ the Jews, nor make them members of either Catholic or Protestant Christian bodies.  We were not even preaching Jesus to them.  Our message was to the Jews as Jews, from Isa. 40:1,2: ‘Comfort ye, comfort ye my people; speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem; cry unto her that her appointed time is accomplished; that her iniquity is pardoned, for she hath received of the Lord’s hand double.’  We declared that it was not our expectation that the Jews would return to Palestine as Christians.  On the contrary, God’s call and promises as respects Jerusalem are earthly promises to natural Israel.

“To a few who asked quite deeply we explained that our understanding is that the Messiah of prophecy is a great spirit company composed of many members, including English, French, German, Jews, etc.; that God is gathering this Messianic company to heavenly glory from every nation, people, kindred and tongue, and that only the saintly will be in and of it.  We explained:  We do not understand that Christians in general, any more than Jews in general, will have part in the Messianic body and that it would be the furthest from our thought to have the Jews get as mixed up on different matters as are the majority of Christian people.

“Since then several Jewish papers continue to publish our writings and we have had two more Jewish mass meetings.  One of these was in Chicago.  It was somewhat of a disappointment as to numbers, until we noticed that the Saturday on which it was held was a particularly unfavorable time.  Many Jews expressed their disappointment in not being able to attend, because it would deprive them of their principal business day.  Nevertheless the audience was estimated at fifteen hundred and we had excellent attention.

“Our last meeting with the Jews was held in Philadelphia.  It was not at all advertised in the secular press.  In other words, it was a Jewish meeting.  Garrick Theater was full to the limit, with about three hundred standing, when the police, following the fire ordinance, forbade others to enter, and several hundred were turned away disappointed.  That meeting was the most enthusiastic held thus far with the Jewish people.  Their confidence in the Editor seems to be growing.  Zionism from a prophetic standpoint seems to stir the Jewish heart as the subject never did politically.” (Reprint 4764, February 15, 1911)

It should now be clear enough to our readers that Brother Russell spent much time in research of the Jewish question – past and future – because the time had come for this work; and we adopt much the same attitude, although we do not attempt to classify ourselves with him in our writings on the matter.  But we would emphasize here that those who attempt to make a distinction between the prophecies concerning the ten tribes and the two tribes make a mistake when they do this.  Jer. 31:31 stresses “both the houses of Israel,” meaning the ten tribes and the two tribes, who had become separated from each other in the revolt after the death of Solomon.  Time itself had made quite ludicrous the claims of the Anglo-Israel organization that claimed the English people are the ten “lost” tribes.

There is just no foundation in fact or Scripture for such a conclusion.  Julius Caesar discovered – or invaded – England in 55 B.C., but there is no evidence at all that any of the twelve Apostles ever went there; and, since 1914, before which the British were the money lords of the world, the British money has been taking quite a beating.  This would have been much more pronounced had not the United States been so generous in helping them.  This has probably been a compensation from the Lord for the help they have given Zionism and the Jews in their present occupation of Palestine. And it should be apparent that we do not wish to create any quarrel when we say what we have said herein.

Some years back we attended an International Monetary Seminar in New York for three days, at which the speakers were prominent bankers, financial men and economists from England, France, Switzerland, South Africa, Japan, Mexico, etc.; and one of the economists ventured the statement that the United States is now in the same relative position as was England in 1914 – that we should now become the financial center of the globe.  So we presented the question to him: Today a steel worker in the United States earns as much money in one day as does the steel worker in Germany in one week for the same work.  That condition did not prevail in 1914.  How do you reconcile the two conditions?  He said he had not thought of that.

While some of the statements herein are our own, much of it is from the Watch Tower, and this will be our position in the remainder of this article.  Thus, we now go back to the Feb. 1, 1898, Reprint 2256:  “Some years ago, being curious to know how learned Hebrews view the Old Testament reference to Christ – as ‘a lamb for the slaughter,’ etc., we visited a friendly rabbi, and asked him the question.  He replied that Hebrews apply these prophecies to the Hebrew people and their centuries of bitter experiences under more or less persecution.  We are forcibly reminded of this false method of interpretation by the statement of Dr. Herzl at the Basel Congress, held August 29, last – to the effect that that Congress was the ‘birth’ of their Messiah – that the Messiah class which they hope will fulfill all the good promises of Scripture concerning Abraham’s seed was there organized.  It appears, too, that the date (Aug. 29) was selected in harmony with a tradition prevalent among the Bulgarian Jews to the effect that Messiah would be born on that date.

“This is quoted with some assurance of endorsement by Rabbi Joseph Krauskopf in a recent discourse from which we quote the following comment on the Zionist movement and congress.  He said:  ‘The boldness of that dream startled the world.  As for me, when the full report reached me and I read the fearful story of the Judennoth, that was submitted to the congress, I could not wonder at the statement made by Dr. Herzl, the president of the congress, during the first day’s session:  The Bulgarian Jews have long believed that the messiah should be born on a 29th of August.  They were right, THE MESSIAH HAS BEEN BORN TODAY IN THE ZIONIST CONGRESS.’

“It was a magnificent assemblage of Israelites that had gathered there in congress.  Two hundred delegates, representing many hundreds of thousands of people had come with a most sacred purpose, that of putting an end to the persecutions and miseries of millions of Jews by re-acquiring for them of their own native Palestine and reestablishing them there in peaceful and honorable industries.

“It was beyond doubt the most remarkable gathering in the whole history of Israel.  The venerable Dr. Lippe opened the congress and Dr. Herzl gave the keynote of the movement, comparing the inflictions of the modern anti-Semite with the Jew baiter of former centuries.  A similar tale of woe was told by Max Nordau.  It was the same refrain by all, and the congress concluded that the settlement of Palestine was the only solution of the Jewish question.

“Upon research, I found that Palestine, with the adjacent countries stretching between the Euphrates and the Tigris, that are now almost deserted, could amply support millions of agriculturists.  The soil is luxuriantly fertile, the climate salubrious, the water pure and abundant, the irrigation canals of the ancients still available. The winters are short and mild, the summers long enough to ripen two harvests.  The products of all the land can be laid down in the capitals of Europe within five days after their shipment and in price and excellence they can drive from the market those of other competing countries.  Because of these conclusions I have been proclaimed a Zionist and have been asked to attend the second congress at Jerusalem next summer.”

Some of our readers probably know that for many years some of the Jews, some of them leaders, have contended that the United States is the promised land.  Here they can own real estate, engage in lawful business.  Many of them have become prominent doctors and lawyers; many have become prosperous businessmen, and have amassed great fortunes.  Some forty years ago we often went to New York; and we were told at that time that Kuhn, Loeb & Co., Wall Street members, had an estimated wealth of fifteen billion dollars.  We visited their offices a few times, and have no reason to doubt what we were told.

This same outfit, with some others, had at that time formed a charitable organization to establish incoming Jews in business by lending them the necessary funds.  If they failed, the same thing was repeated.  However, if they failed two times in a row, no more help was given them; they would then be on their own – although it seems this seldom happened.  We knew a Gentile lady who worked in that office; and she said she was very happy in her job, that those Jews never discharged any one except for disloyalty.

THE RESTORATION OF ISRAEL

Chapter VIII of Parousia Vol. 3, pages 243-300, treat of this subject in some detail; and we now present some excerpts from those pages, having in mind that this is quite familiar to some of our readers, but not nearly to all of them.  This offers Scriptural proof of their phenomenal rise under the reign of David and Solomon; their fall under Zedekiah in the Fall of 607 B.C.; their dispersion in A.D. 70; and predictions of their rise again.  As we read, let us keep in mind that this book was begun in 1889 and put on the press in 1891 – a few years before the first Zionist congress was held in Basel.  And when we consider the progress the Jews have made since that time, we can but offer grateful respect to the writer of Volume III.

“Among the relics of antiquity that have come down to our day, there is no other object of so great interest as the Jewish people.  The searchers after ancient lore have untiringly questioned every inanimate object that could give a mite of historic or scientific information.   Monuments, altars, tombs, relics of public and private edifices, paintings, sculptures, hieroglyphics and dead languages have all been appealed to; and some have even tried patiently to discover the line of actual truth that probably inspired the many fanciful traditions, legends, songs, etc., that have come floating down the centuries, in order to learn all that is possible to know of human origin, history and destiny.  But a most interesting relic, and the one whose history can be most easily deciphered and understood, is the Jewish people. In them we have a monument of antiquity of inestimable value, upon which are recorded, in clearly legible characters, the origin, progress and final destiny of the whole human race – a living and intelligent witness of the gradual outworking of a wonderful purpose in human affairs, in exact conformity with the predictions of their Divinely inspired prophets and seers. (pp. 243-244)

“As a people they still have faith in God, though in their blindness and pride of heart they have stumbled over the humility of God’s appointed messenger for the world’s salvation; so that, instead of receiving Him, they crucified the Savior, the Lord of glory.  And yet the Apostles and prophets show us that even this flagrant crime, to which their pride and self-will drove them, was not one which could never be forgiven them.  Because of it, they have been punished, and that severely.  When they condemned the just One and said, “His blood be upon us and upon our children,’ they little expected the fearful recompense which followed.

“Since then Israel has been a nation scattered and peeled.  Driven as exiles from country to country, and from province to province, they have been deprived of almost every right and privilege which other men enjoyed.  Rejecting Christianity, as well in its corrupted as in its pure form, they became the objects of the contempt and relentless persecution of the Church of Rome. (p. 246)

“Since the destruction of their temple and their dispersion, the sacrifices have been discontinued; but in most other respects the Mosaic requirements are yet observed among the Orthodox Jews.  Their worship, as of old, consists in the reading of Scripture, prayer and praise.  The second day of their feast of trumpets they read the account of Abraham’s offering of his son Isaac and God’s blessing to him and his seed.  Then they blow the trumpet and pray that God would bring them to Jerusalem. (p. 249)

“Nor will the coming favor to Israel be exclusive.  All believers in the covenant promises may share those returning favors with the natural seed, as during this Age any Jew who accepted Christ was eligible to the spiritual blessings and advantages offered during the Age.  As only a small remnant believed in and accepted the gospel favors at the beginning, so, aside from the Jews, only a small number of mankind will be ready for the new laws and conditions of the Millennial Age, under the just administration of the glorified Lord and His glorified Church; hence, at first, few but Jews will be blessed under it.

“The Jew, long used to striving to do, and of trusting to works of obedience to the Law to secure for him God’s blessing, stumbled over the first feature of the Gospel Age, the remission of sins, without works, to every one that believeth in Jesus’ perfect work and all-sufficient sacrifice for sin.  But the Jew’s respect for the Law will turn to his advantage in the dawn of the Millennial Age, and none will be more ready for the strict requirements and laws of that Age then he, after his blindness as to Christ and the value of His sacrifice for sins shall have passed away; for works are required after faith in Christ, though not accepted before.  And the Jew, in accepting the love and favor of God and Christ, will not be so inclined to lose sight of God’s justice as many others of today.  Others, on the contrary, will be blinded for a time and unready to recognize the rules of the Kingdom, in which justice will be laid to the line and righteousness to the plummet.  (pp. 253-254)

TO THE JEW FIRST

“We see, then, that God’s prediction, that Israel (except the faithful few) would be blinded by their Law (Rom. 11:9), was fulfilled in a natural way; and also that His further prediction, that the favors and conditions of the Millennial Age will bless many of them more quickly than others, is also to come about in a perfectly natural way and to result from reasonable causes.

“So the Millennial favors will be to the Jew first, even as by reason of the covenants, etc., the Gospel favors were offered to them first.  And so it shall be finally as Simeon prophesied: ‘This child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel.’ (Luke 2:34)  And the time for raising up that nation, so long fallen from favor, is at hand. (p. 256)

“But let us guard against a too common mistake, made by many who see something of these promises, of supposing that the statements should be taken literally, which say: ‘After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle [house] of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up.’  ‘And the Lord shall give him the throne of his father David.’  ‘And David, my servant, shall be king over them.’ (Acts 15:16; Luke 1:32; Ezek. 37:24)  While the literalness of the promised return of Israel to their own land, and the rebuilding of Jerusalem upon her own heaps, cannot be questioned, we may be equally confident that by the house and throne of David, not the literal stones, timbers, etc., are meant.  The reestablishment of the house of David refers to the reestablishment of royalty and dominion in the hand of David’s posterity.  Christ Jesus is the promised scion of David’s house, the heir of his throne; and when His authority begins to be established, that will be the beginning of raising up (permanent establishment) of the formerly temporary house or tabernacle of David, that was overthrown, and that for many centuries has lain in the dust.  So, likewise, the ‘throne of David,’ upon which Messiah will sit, refers not to the wood, gold and ivory bench upon which David sat, but to the dignity, power and authority of office which he exercised.  That authority, office or throne, which David occupied for some years, is to be filled on a much grander scale by Jehovah’s Anointed, our Lord Jesus.” (pp. 256-257)

SOME EVIL REVOLUTIONISMS

From the above quotations, it should be clear to any child that our beloved Pastor thoroughly believed and was in full accord with the teaching of St. Paul in Rom. 1:16 – “salvation is to the Jew first” – not only in the Great Salvation but also in the Common Salvation (Heb. 2:3 and Jude 3); and also with the Apostle John in John 4:22:  “Salvation is of the Jews.”  Thus, it becomes doubly noxious and pernicious to note that two organizations that were taught of him, and at one time believed what he taught, should now be substituting their own concocted errors for the Truth they learned of him.

In Isa. 2:3 we are told that “Out of Zion [the Christ Company in heaven – “Do ye know not the saints shall judge the world.” – 1 Cor. 6:2] shall go forth the law; and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem [the resurrected Worthies who will be the visible government here on earth – “princes in all the earth” – Psa. 45:16]” – who will be assisted by the faithful Orthodox Jews as missionaries, the “first” to receive the blessings of the New Covenant. (Jer. 31:31)

The two organizations mentioned above are the Jehovah’s Witnesses and the Laymen’s Home Missionary Movement.  The Witnesses now teach that the “great multitude” of Rev. 7:9 refers to their large crowd that is now working for them; that the Jews who do not accept them now will be destroyed forever in the approaching Armageddon.  The context of Rev. 7 clearly shows that the great multitude will be a spiritual class – as Pastor Russell taught it.  At one time the Witnesses believed this, too, so they are now revolutionizing against a truth they once taught.  They now teach that their present devotees will not only be the earthly rulers, but will also be used to generate a new earthly population free from sin.

The LHMM does not go to the extreme of the Witnesses.  They merely contend that their new converts will supersede the Jews; that instead of being “to the Jew first” it will be to their “Consecrated Epiphany Campers first,” which are now being added to their following.  This is also in direct contradiction to the teaching of our Pastor, as well as to the teachings of Brother Paul S. L. Johnson, who was the founder and head of the LHMM.  The LHMM, as well as the Witnesses, can find Scripture to “prove” their errors; but all teachers of error, past and present, have been able to pervert Scriptures to “prove” their false teachings.

Much more could be written on this subject, but we hope we have given sufficient to convince our readers of the truth on the matter.  Thus we close with Amos 9:11,14,15:

“In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old.  And I will bring again the captivity of my people of Israel, and they shall build the waste cities, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards and drink the wine thereof; they shall also make gardens, and eat the fruit of them.  And I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be pulled up out of their land which I have given them, saith the Lord thy God.” (Brother John J. Hoefle, Reprint 424, August 1991)
