NO. 514 SOME THOUGHTS FOR THE MEMORIAL

by Epiphany Bible Students

"And it came to pass when the time was come that He should be received up, he steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem." (Luke 9:51)

As the passion of our Beloved Lord comes once more acutely to our attention because of "the cross," it is well that we meditate again upon The Apostle Paul’s words in Hebrews 12:3, Dia.: "Consider him attentively who has endured such opposition from sinners, so that you may not be wearied, being discouraged in your souls."

The annual observance of our Lord's death occurs this year after six P.M., April 17. We will celebrate at 2501 Morningside Drive, Mount Dora, Florida and we invite all of like mind to join us.

The Bible is very positive on the subject of the proper date for observing this sacred event: "And ye shall keep it up [the lamb] until the fourteenth day of the same month; and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.'' (Ex. 12:6) From this clear statement it should be readily clear that the condition of the moon is by no means a determining factor. The only consideration of the moon is to determine Nisan 1; and once that is established, then it is fourteen days until the observance should be held. Nisan 1 is established by the moon which becomes new nearest the Spring Equinox - unless that moon would date the "remembrance" before the Vernal Equinox - in which case the new moon of the following month should be used. Never before the Vernal Equinox is a hard and fast rule determined by both Brother Russell and Brother Johnson.

To memorialize our Lords death means to observe the memory of it, as the word indicates.  The ritual for this memorial was established by Jesus Himself as recorded by the various Gospel writers; and we offer the record from Luke 22:19,20: "And Jesus took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, saying, This is my body which is given for you; this do in remembrance of me. Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is of the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you. "According to the Matthew account, when Jesus gave them the cup He said, "Drink all of you out of it.'' (Matt. 26:27, Dia.) Thus, the drinking out of the one cup emphasized the oneness of those that night, as well as all those throughout the Gospel Age who would partake of it "till he comes. "

Some may inquire whether the Apostle 's statement concerning the Lord's Supper, that it shows forth the Lord's death "till he come" (1 Cor. ll: 26), should not be understood to limit its observance and to make it no longer proper, since we believe that He has come. We answer, No; it will be proper to celebrate our Lord's death and our consecration down to the time when we shall have finished our course by actually dying.

The institution of this service was given after the Passover supper, which the Jews observed each year on Nisan 14 - just as Jesus and the Apostles were doing that night. Even to our time the Jews still observe the Passover once each year, although they are often a day or two off in determining the time; but the orthodox Jews still keep the feast with a solemnity befitting the memory of that awesome night in Egypt, when the Angel of Death passed throughout the land and smote the firstborn in every Egyptian house - from the least to the greatest; but at the same time "passing over" every Jewish house where the blood had been sprinkled on the doorpost and lintel, and none of them were slain that night so long as they remained "under the blood."  There is nothing in the record to indicate that any of them disobeyed that edict that night.

JESUS OUR PASSOVER LAMB

But we are told that “Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.” However, instead of using the lamb and unleavened bread, we use the symbols that Jesus Himself instituted the night before He died - the unleavened bread and the wine, being substituted for the lamb and bread. Some may object to this course, but there is no record at all that the early Christians ever again used the lamb and bread; it was always the bread and wine!

"It is the Lord's passover" is given for emphasis - not a thing to be regarded shabbily. "Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord." (Rom. 12:11) Thus were the Jews impressed with the dangers and difficulties of the journey ahead of them - just as the meticulous instructions for the preparation were also vividly lodged in their minds. This same logic is to be seen in the fact that they were to select their lamb on Nisan 10, which would allow them four days of meditation and sober examination, all of which was very strictly followed in the Memorials in the years ensuing, even to the time when Jesus arrived.

In the type the lamb was taken up four days before it was killed; and that was typical of Jesus, the Greater Lamb, presenting Himself to the Jews four days before He was "lifted up." But there was another compelling reason for the four-day interval. That most memorable of nights, when the Angel of Death would "pass over" the Jewish first-born, was not to be approached flippantly or carelessly. As each family took up its own lamb, and removed all leaven from the home, the course of these four days would put them into a proper mental attitude and contrition of heart for that awesome night . And this is well in keeping with St. Paul's words to all who commemorate the antitype; "Let a man examine himself" (1 Cor. 11:28,29) - not five minutes before the service, perhaps in public confessionals; not just an hour before the service; but let each do so in "sincerity and in truth" during the days preceding it.

And this text means exactly what it says; the Lord's people are not to examine each other; each is to examine himself. There are just two reasons why any should be disfellowshipped - gross immorality, or gross doctrinal deflection. Aside from these two reasons, none are to be debarred from the Lord's Memorial. The other position of the text permits reasonable liberty toward all who partake - "he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh condemnation to himself. " The justice of God is grandly demonstrated in St. Paul's words. We may not like the personal habits of others; we may consider them uncouth in appearance, speech, or mannerisms; but we are not to pass judgment upon such to disfellowship them from the Memorial assembly. We may be seated next to such a person; may be acutely cognizant of his limitations in the fruits and graces of the Holy Spirit; but we have the clear assurance that none of that will "rub off" onto us. If we have perhaps been overly liberal in admitting some to that solemn feast, we have the written word that such "eateth and drinketh condemnation to himself. So the matter is pretty much an individual one as regards the general run of human frailties: The Faithful should examine himself; the unfaithful imbibes condemnation to himself. Therefore, we are justified in erring toward the liberal viewpoint, as against too rigid a position.

After giving charge to Israel to keep the Passover, God then gave command for an annual commemoration: "This day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast unto the Lord throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance forever." (Ex. 12:14) Forever meaning age-lasting, the ceremony was to continue each year until the end of the Jewish Age - when the antitype would appear. Here we would emphasize that there was only one Passover - the one in Egypt; in subsequent years its observation was simply a memorial - much the same as we observe birthdays, wedding, anniversaries, etc. In the Memorials the Jews did not sprinkle the lamb's blood on the doorpost because none of them were in danger of dying then.

So also, there was but one antitype - "Christ our Passover"; the bread and the wine once each year being merely a Memorial of Him who perished on the cross.  And as the Memorial of the typical Passover was to be celebrated once each year, so the antitypical Memorial is to be celebrated once each year.

Following the institution of the Supper which memorializes His death, Jesus and His disciples sang a hymn, and then went out of the city to the Mount of Olives opposite - a distance of perhaps a mile. Apparently several important lessons were given to the disciples enroute to Gethsemene.  These St. John's Gospel records in Chapters 15-17.

The word Gethsemene signifies an oil press - a name that is full of significance. When we remember that Jews used the oil of the olives both for food and for light, and that Jesus is the Nourisher as well as the Enlightener of the world, we see a special fitness in His having His trying experiences, which almost crushed His soul, in a garden used for the crushing of olives and extracting their oil.

Gethsemene was not a flower garden, but an olive orchard or garden. The supposed site is still carefully preserved. In the garden are some very ancient olive trees. The Garden is supposed to have belonged to some of Jesus' friends; and there is claimed to be some evidence that John Mark, the writer of the Gospel of St. Mark, was the lad who was awakened from his slumbers by the commotion incident in Jesus' arrest and who came forth in his nightgown. (Mark 14:51,52)

Arriving at the Garden, Jesus left eight of the Apostles near the entrance, and went further into its shade with Peter, James and John. All were to watch, to be on guard against something that was to occur, something of which Jesus knew, but which seemed most improbable to the Apostles. They were unable to comprehend the Master' s despondency even though they sympathized with Him.

It was midnight and they were accustomed to retiring early. The strain of the evening, and weighty lessons which the Master had imparted, reacted in drowsiness. They slept, instead of watching and praying. This was true even of the three nearest to the Master.

Wishing to be alone in His communion with the Father, Jesus went a stone's throw farther into the shade by Himself. Time and again, in the agony which came upon Him, He came seeking human sympathy, only to find His dearest ones oblivious in sleep. Well had it been expressed by the Prophet, "Of the people there was none with me." (Isa. 63:3) He trod the winepress of grief alone.

Not until He had finished giving admonitions to His Apostles and had left some to watch at the entrance of the garden, did the Master seem to give special thought to Himself and to the momentous events anticipated within a few hours. As He was leaving His favorite three, He gave utterance to the weight of oppression which seemed suddenly to rest down upon His soul. He exclaimed, "My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death!" (Mark 14:33,34) - I feel as if I would die now, without coming to that great crisis which is before Me. We read that "He was greatly amazed and sore troubled." The Greek is equally strong, signifying utter amazement and anguish, carrying the thought of loneliness, homesickness, and friendlessness.

St Paul assures us that the Master's Gethsemane experiences were linked with fear- not fear of dying, but fear of remaining dead, fear that He would not be accounted of the Father worthy of that glorious resurrection which had been promised to Him on condition of absolute obedience. St. Paul says, "Who in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto Him that was able to save Him out of death [by resurrection], was heard in respect to things which He feared. " (Heb. 5:7) He was saved out of death; and more than this, He was given the assurance by the Father that He would be saved out of death.

This is the explanation of the statement that an angel of God appeared to Him in the Garden and strengthened Him - gave Him the assurance from the Father that He had been faithful up to that moment, and that the Divine blessing would be with Him in the hour of trial just at hand. From that moment onward, all the fear and agony were gone. If the Father had approved Him thus far, and if the Father's blessing and smile went with Him, He could endure all things, come what might. Throughout the remainder of that night, and following day, Jesus was the calmest of the calm, under the most trying circumstance.  He comforted those who wept about Him; He committed His mother to the faithful St. John, etc.

"Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of Man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you." (John 6:53)  In this chapter the Lord is addressing the Jews, who believed not on Him, but murmured because He told them He was the true Bread from heaven. His expression, "eat the flesh and drink the blood," had a deep spiritual significance which none but the Israelites Indeed could receive. And this is still true today.  The world, when dealt with in the next age, by Jesus, will indeed have the opportunity to eat of His flesh - to appropriate the merits of His sacrifice; but they will have no opportunity of sharing in His cup - of drinking His blood.  Symbolically, the cup signifies the sacrificed life. The world will have no share in the suffering of Christ, represented in the cup.

"The flesh of the Son of Man" represents restitution to human privileges, i.e., the means to its attainment, and restores to man the life which he had forfeited - the life lost in Adam - human life, earthly life. It will be the gift of God through Christ. But the supplying of this Bread will not be sufficient. The world will need to eat of the Bread and have the assistance the Lord will give them through His Kingdom. Jesus said, "I am the living Bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this Bread he shall live forever." (John 6:51)

The Bread from heaven was our Lord's flesh, which He was to give for the life of the world. And Jesus explains this to be what was typified by the manna that fell in the wilderness. He said, "Your fathers did eat manna [in the wilderness] , and are dead. He that eatheth of this Bread shall live forever." (John 6:49-51) He also said, "Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone, but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit." (John 12:24) And He did fall into the earth and die. And the Church became sharers with Him in His death. They participate in His suffering and death, which the world will never do. They share in its outcome.

Do Youthful Worthies partake of the Lord's Supper? Most certainly they do! They are thankful and appreciative of what our Savior has done for them. They do not "suffer with Christ," nor will they "reign with Christ," - therefore they partake of the wine and bread, symbolizing our Lord's death as the Lamb of God and symbolizing their tentative justification. Their trial is for faith and obedience and not for life as was the saints trial, although they make the same kind of consecration as did the spirit-begotten: "Ye shall have one manner of law, as well for the stranger [the unbegotten], as for one of your own country [spirit-begotten]." (Lev. 24:22) Moreover, the Youthful Worthies are tentatively under an Advocate through their Tentative Justification, and are tentatively Sons of God.

When our Lord said, "For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed" (John 6:55), we understand Him to mean that this is the most valuable food and drink ever known. No other bread has such value, and no other drink could be so precious as this.

All the work of the Gospel Age, is the getting ready of the food for the world, and of the blood which will be sprinkled upon them.

At the beginning of the Millennial Age - as soon as the Church is joined to her Head beyond the veil - the blood will be sprinkled to satisfy justice for the world. Then, as the Mediator, Christ will proceed to do a work for all who will receive it. And that work is symbolically represented as sprinkling the people with the blood. In other words, every member of the race will be privileged to come into Covenant relationship with God through the Mediator, by accepting the terms which He will hold forth during the Millennial reign. This is "good tidings of great joy which shall be to all people." (Luke 2: 10) If they meet the requirements during the Messiah• s reign, by the close of that period they will be perfect; and He will present them before the Father, and all who endure faithfully the test then applied, will be received into full covenant relationship with Him.

In order that any of the race of Adam might profit by the sacrifice of Jesus, it was necessary that He should rise from the tomb on the Divine plane of life, that He should ascend to the Father and deposit the sacrificial merit of His death in the hands of justice, and receive from the Father "all power in heaven and in earth." (Matt. 28:18) As related to the world it was necessary also that, in the Father's due time, He should come again to earth, a glorious Divine Being, then to be to the whole world a Mediator, Prophet, Priest and King, to assist back to perfection and to harmony with God all who will avail themselves of the wonderful privileges then to be offered.

It is needless that we seek to dispute as to which was the more important event - the death of Jesus or His resurrection from the dead.  Both were equally important.  Had He not died there would be no basis for a reconciliation of Adam and his race, condemned to death.  Had He not risen there would have been no call of the Church during the Gospel Age to be the Bride of Christ.  Neither would there have been use for the promised Mediatorial Kingdom to be established at His Second Presence for the blessing of Israel and the world.

Be it noted that those who condemned Jesus to the cross were not the "beggarly elements" of that time, not the irreligious; it was the "good" people who were guilty of that - those who would not cross the Gentile door "lest they should be defiled for the feast." (John 18:28) And "As He is, so are we in this world." (1 John 4:17) The heathen Pilate strove to avoid the tragic miscarriage of justice; and it was the High Priest of Israel who "had the greater sin" in the matter. It was those people schooled in the Law, who "sat down and watched Him there" (Matt. 27:36) - watched the tragedy of the cross as the idly curious might watch a street-corner side show - watched the final hours of agony of "the Lord of Glory" with a calloused indifference that would be unbelievable were it not written in the sacred record.

And Jesus knowing in the final hours of that awful night, that He had "finished the work God gave Him to do," (John 17:4) resigned Himself to what was to be. The time for controversy had passed - "now is your hour, and the power of darkness" (Luke 22:53); so He "held his peace." (Matt. 26:63) "No man taketh my life from me; I lay it down of myself." (John 10:18) There is in this a lesson for us, too. The day previous and the day following observance of the Memorial should be a time of calm meditation insofar as lieth in us. If any wish to be contentious at that time, let them go their way for the time being; there will come more suitable occasions to answer such.

As always, we counsel the reading of Brother Russell's treatise on the Passover in Volume 6. We also, suggest the reading of Exodus 12 with Berean Comments five days before the Memorial; then the same with the pertinent writings of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John with Berean Comments. This should be most refreshing and helpful for a "man to examine himself."

With this comes Christian love to all God's people wherever they may assemble. And we offer a prayer for the Lord's nearness and rich blessing in the preparation for, and participation in this coming service. "Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us." (1 Cor. 5:7)

A POIGNANT IRONY

One of the most poignant ironies in the history of the Christian religion is the close association of astronomers after Copernicus with the Roman Catholic Church, which censored Galileo for the then-heretical view that the sun was the center of the solar system, not the Earth.

This irony is spelled out in numbing detail in an article in The Sciences, which traces the relationship to the Council of Nicaea in A.D. 325. It was there decreed that Easter should be celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox. You can do this fairly easily, of course, by recognizing the equinox, waiting for the next full moon and celebrating Easter the following Sunday. But a week at most to prepare throughout the world for the celebration obviously isn't enough.

To complicate the issue, the equinox and the full moon don't take place at the same times all around the globe, but having Easter celebrated on many different days wasn't appealing to a church promoting its "unity and universality," as the article put it. So the church calculated the date several years in advance and distributed calendars calling for Easter to be observed on a particular Sunday. The church's calculations were inaccurate and got worse.

So astronomers were called in to calculate the period between vernal equinoxes. They used a meridian line and a hole in a high window or ceiling to mark where the sun touched the line and then counted the days until it touched that same place again. Cathedrals were the only buildings large enough to allow this to be done with any degree of accuracy.

In effect, the church aided the scientific quest that established the sun's position at the center of the solar system, which church dogma denied.

FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT

The year was 1947 and Jewish Agency leader David Ben-Gurion faced an almost impossible decision.  All about him were Zionist officials, considering themselves to be pragmatic, urging him to accept the United Nations' partition plan which would grant to the Jews a small and emaciated homeland within the territory of Mandatory Palestine, Vigorously, however, opposing the ceding of any territory to the Arabs, were the others, those who sincerely argued that the emerging Jewish state could never survive within such indefensible borders. Torn between the two camps, Ben-Gurion understood that resting heavily on his shoulders was a fateful dilemma that would effect world events and Jewish history for decades to come.

As it transpired, Ben-Gurion and the Zionist leadership finally opted for the UN's partition plan. In the end they concluded that the declaration of statehood was more crucial than the risk of attempting to return to all parts of the Jewish heartland. In their reasoning, they would accept "half a loaf" from the UN and continue to dream about someday in Israel's future securing for themselves the missing portions of Israel. The opponents, at the time, were bitter in their defeat, yet they necessarily had to develop their own pragmatism and move forward. They declared that they would continue to build upon all the land that Israel received and relentlessly strive, at every juncture, to eventually return to all of Judea, Samaria and Gaza. There was plainly too much work ahead for any notions of despair to be entertained.

Ben-Gurion himself sympathized with this approach and he clarified that accepting the partial territories would never act to abdicate the Jewish historical claim to the entire land: "If we were offered a Jewish state in the western land of Israel in return for our relinquishing the right of the Jewish People over the whole land of Israel, then I would postpone the state. No Jew has the right to relinquish the right of the Jewish People over the whole land of Israel.  It is beyond the powers of any Jewish body.  It is even beyond the power of the whole Jewish People living today to give up any part of the Land of Israel"

If one were to listen to the reports from today's media or the spin put upon the current political situation by other opponents of YESHA, one might begin to believe that the future prognosis for the YESHA settlement was dim and that widespread panic had already set in.  Indeed, newspaper stories assert that YESHA Council leaders are in despair, while the electronic media only provides its viewers with interviews by "men in the street" who believe all is lost. One might be led to believe that matters are bleaker for proponents of settling all of Israel, than those felt even in 1947. However, like much else about the media' s reporting when it concerns Israel, these stories are both inaccurate and maliciously deceptive. They are part of the seemingly never-ending campaign to project a misleading light on the strength and courage of the residents of the YESHA communities.

In my recent ongoing conversations with the leaders of YESHA and reports of our offices form our own sources, quite a different picture emerges.  The morale, spirit and ideological commitment in settlements is still going strong.  ABC, NBC the BBC, CNN and the readers of the New York Times would be surprised to find that there is no evidence of despair.  What might be described as a lack of focused leadership and communication, cannot be categorized as an abandonment of determination or of discouragement by the residents of YESHA communities. Much of the public impression, then that a crisis mood is in place is wholly fabricated and completely unfounded.

Just one example of this can be witnessed in the skewed perceptions of the difficult negotiations with the Barak government over the 42 new neighborhoods which were established in recent months. While the settlement opponents and global media focused on the 15 new neighborhoods that the government had insisted upon dismantling, little coverage was given to the other 32 new neighborhoods, YESHA leaders managed to secure forever. These 32 new neighborhoods were a tremendous victory for YESHA movement, yet the entire episode was universally portrayed as a desperate defeat. Unwilling to acknowledge our success, what one saw depicted on the news instead, was the spectacle of the struggle between the group of students and settlers at the Maon Farm peacefully resisting the Army. Reports and footage of the other residents quietly living in their 32 new neighborhoods and going about their activities was simply never presented.

But as anyone who objectively follows events understands, there have been a great deal of encouraging developments in the YESHA settlement. The 32 newly approved neighborhoods are being integrated into the existing towns and citizens from around Israel are still choosing YESHA as a desirable place to live. New highways and roads, including an important four-lane traffic artery that connects Northern Jerusalem to the Tel Aviv Highway is being completed. These new roads bring hundreds of thousands of Israelis living inside the Green Line into contact with our communities as they more easily commute to work. Many agricultural and infrastructure projects are also being launched. In addition, record numbers of students are studying in YESHA schools and plans to draw hi tech industry to such cities as Ariel are being actively promoted.

Still, one must not downplay the seriousness of the events unfolding and concerns over the final status talks. Many issues crucial to the YESHA settlements and to all Israelis still hang in the balance. As the Palestinians continue to voice their demand that Jerusalem is their capital, insistence over the security of cities such as Ma 'aleh Adumim, Pisgat Ze'ev, Ne've Yakov, and Givat Ze'ev are joined with concerns over the future Jewish sovereignty of the Old City. The issue of the fall out from bringing millions of Arab refugees into Gaza is directly connected with the abilities of the Israeli economy to confront its own unemployment problems. Moreover, the matter of withdrawing from YESHA territories now has Israeli scientists and farmers anxious over the much-needed water supplies they are being asked to abandon to the Palestinians. Demands for access to roads and highways by the Arabs increases the threats of terrorism and road safety to Israeli citizens living everywhere.

The Palestinians, today, sharply focus their attention on the behavior and mood of the residents of YESHA, utilizing it as a national barometer. Like the carrion birds of the desert, they circle over the settlement squinting to observe if the media reports of our imminent collapse are true. The Arabs know that if the YESHA leaders, who have always maintained an optimistic and confident frame of mind despite the disasters brought on by the Oslo accords, are staggering in despair, then they have truly succeeded in demoralizing the entire Jewish State. For this reason alone our leaders, rabbis and families are strenuously redoubling their efforts even as the birds of prey circle above. What might be perceived as weakness or fatigue in the settlements could well spread to encouraging and fueling Arab demands in every other issue under negotiation.

Only those who are unaware of the full facts would believe that a mood of hopelessness has set in amongst our camp. Like a torch passed to us by an earlier generation, YESHA's efforts to redeem the entire Land of Israel will vigorously continue. Despite the momentary setbacks, we will strive and persist in our projects to build schools, housing and religious institutions throughout Judea, Samaria and Gaza. In every inch of land under Israeli control we will pursue our renewal activities. Be assured that the residents of these communities have not given up any hope. They understand the historical, religious and security importance of their presence in maintaining this territory.

The turbulent political winds continue to blow but YESHA' s foundation remains strong. Together we can be proud that in the face the dream of Israel a reality.  In addressing a recent One Israel Fund-YESHA event, Member of Knesset Limor Livnat noted that Israel's fortunes were a lot like the stockmarket. "Just as the market goes through its periodic rises and plunges, the Jews also have their ups and downs.  In the near future, however, I for one am confident that Zionism and Israel's stock will again be on the rise very soon."

On behalf of all the YESHA communities I cannot concur more, I ask each and every supporter of our cause to continue to assist us with our renewal efforts in all the Heartland under Israeli control, firm in the knowledge that our efforts         in these territories will hasten and secure the inevitable return to the entire Land of Israel.

QUESTION OF GENERAL INTEREST

QUESTION - The New Testament is written to the Saints, but are there any texts in the New and Old Testaments meant for the world?

ANSWER - It is true that most of the Epistles are written to the Saints: "Beloved of God, called to be saints." (Rom. 1:7) "Unto the church of God ... called to be saints." (1 Cor. 1:2) "To the saints which are at Ephesus." (Eph. 1:1) "To all the saints which are at Philippi." (Phil. 1:1) "To the saints which are at Colosse." (Col. 1:2)

Thus it is clear that the New Testament is mostly for "the Saints." However, there is mention of other elect classes. For instance, Chapter 11 of Hebrews, which gives a long list of the Ancient Worthies. Also, Heb. 12:23 speaks of "just men made perfect." That Servant applies this to the Ancient Worthies, but we believe it must include the Youthful Worthies, since they are to be associated with the Ancient Worthies in the earthly Kingdom.

But the Apostle Paul addresses the world in general in his statement in Acts 3:19: "Repent and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out." To be repentant for your sins is one thing, but you must be converted (turned from your sins) or it will not mean that you are "repentant and believing." The "common salvation" is also spoken of in Jude 3. And Acts 17:31 says "he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness." What is commonly called the Lord's prayer also gives the two phases of the Kingdom - the earthly and the heavenly.

In the Old Testament this is spoken to the world: "Seek righteousness, seek meekness; it may be that ye shall be hid in the day of the Lord's anger." (Zeph. 2:3) The meek of the earth, the humble of the world in general who love justice and pursue peace will be partly hid in this Time of Trouble. In the French Revolution, which is a type of the Day of Vengeance (the Lord's anger), favors were shown to the just, generous and kind, and extreme wrath was visited upon the oppressors; and we believe it will be so during this Time of Trouble. "Except those days be shortened, there should no flesh be saved." (Matt. 24:22)  The Time of Trouble is especially designed for the oppressors - the wicked. (Mal. 4:1)

But this will not detract from those who died before the inauguration of the Kingdom. For, "all that are in the grave shall hear his voice and shall come forth." (John 5:28,29) "There shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust." (Acts 24:15)

NO. 513 RETROSPECT AND PROSPECT - PART TWO

by Epiphany Bible Students

“KISS SEALS ISRAEL’S BETRAYAL: One is tempted to compare the kiss offered by first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton to Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat’s wife to the kiss that Judas gave Jesus when he betrayed him in the Garden of Gethsemane – but the analogy breaks down because both Hillary Clinton and Soha Arafat are betraying Israel.

“In a statement nearly as outrageous as those made by Holocaust deniers, Soha Arafat said: ‘Our people [the Palestinians] have been submitted to the daily and intensive use of poisonous gas by the Israeli forces which have led to an increase in cancer cases among women and children.’ She also asserted that Israel has contaminated water sources with ‘chemical materials.’ Those Israelis are so clever. They can poison air and water in ways that affect only Palestinians while Jews escape harm. After an outcry by Israeli Prime Minister Ebud Barak and some Jewish leaders in the United States, Mrs. Clinton belatedly issued an objection to Mrs. Arafat’s remarks. Too little, too late.

“At this point in the so‑called peace process, it wouldn’t matter if Yasser Arafat were captured on videotape acknowledging that he has no intention of living up to any agreement and that his ultimate objective is to use the negotiations to weaken Israel to the point at which it won’t be able to withstand a final assault from armed Palestinians and Israel’s Arab neighbors. Arafat, in fact, has made numerous statements in which he has strongly hinted at or openly stated these objectives, but the Europeans, Americans and the United Nations merely blink because they want the issue to go away. They don’t care if Israel disappears in the process. There are peace prizes to be awarded and legacies to be ensured.

“Facts no longer matter. Newsweek reported last week that the National Security Agency learned it was Yasser Arafat who supplied the weapons for the 1983 bombing of the American Embassy in Beirut in which 241 U.S. Marines died. No matter. President Clinton lobbies for $400 million in aid to the Palestine Liberation Organization on top of an initial $500 million that has never been properly accounted for, amid reports that it was misspent.

“Clergy appointed by Arafat at al‑Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem regularly preach sermons calling for the ‘liberation’ of all the land, pre‑1967 Israel included, in a ,jihad that is ‘the responsibility of all Muslims.’ Various communications media controlled by the PLO accuse Israel and the West of employing Nazi tactics against them, which is ironic given the Nazi‑like rhetoric of many PLO leaders and Arab states against Jews and the West.

“Terrorists responsible for the deaths of innocent Israelis and visiting Jewish civilians are praised on PLO TV as saints and heroes. This year’s Palestine Prize for Culture will go to Abu Daoud, mastermind of the 1972 Olympic bombing in Munich that Killed 11 Israeli athletes.

“This is not the behavior or language of people who want to make peace with their neighbors. This is the behavior and language of war, the objective of which is the complete annihilation of the Jews and eradication of the state of Israel. The only way ‘peace’ negotiators can continue with this sham is by ignoring the words and actions of those negotiating in bad faith. The PLO negotiators think that they are carrying out Allah’s will and that it is legitimate to lie about their intentions to the pagan and secular infidels on the Israeli and American side.

“Islamic extremists are taking advantage of secularists in the Israeli and American governments and pragmatists such as Bill Clinton, who wants a ‘legacy’ in foreign affairs that he hopes will cover up his notorious domestic affairs. If the Jews have to die, who cares? They’ve died before. We’ll just build them another museum.

“We see Israeli soldiers yanking fellow Jews from ‘settlements’ and hear Barak speaking of a ghetto‑type fence to keep Israel’s enemies out. But neither evictions of Jews from land nor fences will protect Israel. Fences, in fact, have been used in the past to contain Jews in order to kill them more efficiently.

“As for kissing the target for destruction, Judas wasn’t the only one to employ the tactic. Members of organized crime have long done the same, kissing the one selected for death. With Mrs. Clinton and Mrs. Arafat smooching each other, we have a new scenario. The one who is about to die is not present. Her name is Israel.”(By Cal Thomas, The Orlando Sentinel, November 17, 1999)

“MIDEAST PEACE PACT MASKS INTENT OF ISRAEL’S ENEMIES: Put simply, the agreement signed by Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, and witnessed by Egypt’s president and America’s secretary of state, is a piece of theater designed to mask the true intention of Israel’s enemies: complete domination of all the land they continue to regard as Palestine. Such an objective remains in their language, in the sermons of their clergy, in their television news, in classroom instruction aimed at creating a new generation of Jew haters, and in their hearts.

“Israel’s enemies can be likened to a wild animal. The flaw in Western thinking has always been that such a beast will be satisfied with a small piece of meat and will not want the rest. In fact, the animal will continue to demand more and threaten you if you don’t give it to him. Finally, when you refuse to give any more, he will forcibly take the rest and then eat you.

“There is a cycle in the Middle East, of which the scenario in Sharm E1 Sheik last weekend is a part. Middle East commentator Clarence Wagner Jr. of the organization Bridges for Peace describes it this way: (1) The Arabs make great peace overtures that get Israel and the West excited; (2) Israel and the Arabs negotiate an accord that promises certain concessions from the Arabs in exchange for land given to them by Israel; (3) Israel gives them land, but the Arabs do not reciprocate; (4) the peace process stalls; (5) Israel is blamed; (6) the West pressures Israel to get on with the process; (7) efforts to jump‑start the process are made by Israel with input from the West; (8) nothing happens, the Israeli leader is ousted in election and his successor promises to do better; (9) go back to (1) and begin again, which is where Barak is.

“Palestinian negotiators promise minuscule things in exchange for the land that Israel pledges to give them. Who thinks Arafat is more likely to live up to these promises than previous ones he has consistently broken? Within hours after the signing ceremony, car bombs in Haifa and Tiberias exploded in what appeared to be a terrorist attack gone awry. Three people, apparently the perpetrators, were killed. An Arafat spokesman predictably denied responsibility, but Hamas and the terrorism network won’t be stopped by ink stains dried upon some line.

“While PLO negotiators claim to want peace, they are making preparations for war. According to an Israeli military spokesman, a new tunnel has recently been discovered running between the Palestinian and Egyptian sections of the Gazan border town of Rafiah (there are many other tunnels in territory relinquished by Israel). Inside the tunnel authorities discovered digging tools, ropes and other devices.

“Israeli military officials believe terror organizations are using the tunnels to bring arms, explosives and other dangerous items into the autonomous areas. Israel says all of the tunnels started from the Palestinian side. Why would a people supposedly desiring peaceful coexistence with Israel be engaged in activities one could properly discern as warlike?

“Once the latest land grab is finished, watch for Arafat to demand more land and, when he doesn’t get it, the West will put new pressure on Israel to give it to him.

“On May 15, 1965, Egyptian President Gamal Abdul Nasser declared: ‘Our aim is... the creation of a unified and contiguous Arab region from which Israel will be eliminated.’ There is no reason to believe this objective has been abandoned. There is reason to believe that the latest ‘peace’ accord will assist Israel’s enemies in reaching it.” (By Cal Thomas, Los Angeles Times Syndicate)

“ARAFAT HIDING BILLIONS IN AID MONEY: RAMALLAH – Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasir Arafat has concealed billions of dollars of funds in secret foreign bank accounts and investments, according to dissidents who said they hacked the computer system of the PLO headquarters in Tunis.

“Palestinian sources said the dissidents made the disclosure as part of a campaign against corruption by Arafat’s PA and in an effort to stop the European Union from honoring pledges to donate hundreds of millions of dollars to the PA. Last Sunday, the London based Telegraph quoted Palestinian sources in the West Bank as saying that Arafat has bought property in London as part of an effort to conceal PLO funds.

“The Telegraph said the hackers discovered that the PLO maintains about u5 billion [$8 billion] in numbered bank accounts in Zurich, Geneva and New York.

“The PLO also holds accounts in North Africa, Europe and Asia. They are not registered in the PLO’s name, but in the names of private individuals.

“The hackers also obtained records that the PLO owns shares on the Frankfurt, Paris and Tokyo stock exchanges, including stock in the German car giant Mercedes Benz, and property in prestigious areas of European capitals.

“The newspaper quoted a Palestinian as saying, ‘Why is he sitting on a mountain of gold, while there is a desperate lack of jobs and medical supplies here?’

“In 1994, the General Accounting Office of the U.S. Congress launched an investigation into Arafat’s finances. The report was never released because of pressure from the Clinton administration, but congressional sources said the report contains a ‘goldmine’ of information on where Arafat keeps his money.

“The network of concealed PLO money is known only to Arafat and two trusted aides. The Telegraph said the bulk of the funds are comprised of taxes levied on Palestinians working in Kuwait and other Gulf states and donations from Saudi Arabia.

“The newspaper published the story a day after Arafat launched millennium celebrations in Bethlehem, a project in which the EU and other donors have invested $180 million. Arafat has invited Yugoslavian President Slobodan Milosevic to Bethlehem, a move criticized by American officials.” (By Steve Rodan, The Jewish Press, December 10, 1999)

“ALIYA: A CHALLENGE TO AMERICAN ZIONISTS: I then went on to propose, among other things: ‘Zionist organizations should publicly commit themselves to the goal of a Jewish State. To this end they should promote the aliya of influential Jewish leaders NOW.’ Publicizing this manifesto – its rationale and objectives – would facilitate the development of what is now lacking in Israel: a serious opposition to the Government’s surrender to the Clinton‑Arafat alliance.

“But now I must go further. I am duty‑bound to say, with a tearful heart, that you, the leaders and supporters of American Zionist organizations, can no longer enjoy the luxury of criticizing Israel’s death march from afar. I know your agonizing frustration. I know of your ceaseless efforts to arouse Israel from its paralysis. But all this can no longer justify your remaining on the sidelines as pain‑filled spectators of Israel’s dismemberment.

“You must make every effort to come here and plant your feet where your heart is. You must come here and fight the battle on the battlefield, else you will never be true to your own convictions about Israel’s mortal danger. Instead, you will live a smug lie, content from afar to believe the lies of those leading Israel toward the abyss.

So come here and join me and let us fight the good fight for our people, our land, our heritage, and our G‑d. (By Professor Paul Eidelberg, The Jewish Press, December 10, 1999)

“FROM THE EDITOR:

As long as deep in the heart

The soul of a Jew yearns,

And towards the East

An eye looks to Zion,

Our hope is not yet lost:

The hope of two thousand years

To be free people in our land,

The land of Zion and Jerusalem.

Hatikvah (The Hope)

“Anthem of the Zionist movement, and national anthem of the State of Israel.

“SUNG AT THE First Zionist Congress in Basle 100 years ago, and on the occasion of the declaration of the State of Israel in Tel Aviv half a century later, these eight simple lines written by Naphtali Herz Imber in 1878 say it all.

“For if Israel’s 50th anniversary celebrates anything, it is the triumph of hope. Like an eternal flame, ignited by God and kept alive by the prophets through centuries of hate, this hope burning in the breast of the Jew kept him going, kept him clinging to the special identity assigned his people.

“In 1897, Theodore Herzl spread that hope like wildfire across Asia and Europe when he exhorted scattered Israel that, if they willed it, the return of their homeland need not be a dream.

“Fifty years of ferocious opposition worked to keep that desire a dream. But in 1948 the Jews, and the world, awoke to a new reality – Israel had been reborn.

“The physical resurrection of Israel did not make Hatikvah passe. For where the declaration of statehood sounded the victory of hope over 2000 years of despair, so has the celebration of the first 50 years marked the triumph of that continued hope over the enormous efforts – both military and diplomatic – that have been made to turn back the clock.

“Our hope, inspired by the same God and His ancient prophets, is to see the restoration of Israel completed in our lifetime, so that finally, when every Jew can spend his days in safety, beneath his vine and his fig tree, peace will have come to the Middle East, and the heart‑cry of Hatikvah will have been fulfilled. (Middle East Digest, 1999)

“DID YOU KNOW THAT...: A Jew invented the telephone – and exhibited it publicly 15 years before Bell patented his invention? Johann Philipp Reis exhibited his telephone to scientists in Europe in 1861.

“Almost 200 years before Columbus, a rabbi wrote that the world is round. Moses de Leon (1250‑1305) wrote that the earth is round and that it rotates. ‘The earth revolves like a ball...”’ (The Jewish Press, August 27, 1999)

“THE FINAL STATUS OF JERUSALEM: The final and only status of Jerusalem was affirmed by the Highest Court, 3000 years ago. Now, in supreme arrogance and blasphemy, a corrupt U.S. President, in support of an unrepentant killer, tells Israel that she must negotiate the division of that Holy City, Israel’s capital. Interesting, two immoral men dividing up G‑d’s City.

“Arafat and the Arabs have found that making claims of a wildly absurd nature plays well with Clinton, the EU (European Nation) and the UN (United Nations). Well documented history, supported by the hard facts of archeology make no difference to these nations and individuals who tell the Jews that everything will be all right if they abandon a small part of their Capital City, as they once again make ready to betray the gullible Jews. Even the Bible with its extraordinary historical detail of the relationship the Jews have with Jerusalem makes no difference to this gathering of all that is evil and venal.

“I am mindful of the Christian belief that a Great Evil will appear to lead all of us into a terrible period of war. I think that this creature has already sent out its advance men to pave the way. Never has the world seen such a broad coalition of pure evil as they ready themselves to challenge the authority of the Supreme Being.

“Regrettably, Jewish leaders in Israel and America have fallen prey to the Jewish habit of being willing to talk about anything – even their own deaths. Leaders of Israel and self‑anointed, dovish, Jewish American leaders respond to Arafat/Clinton’s claims to Jerusalem with, ‘OK. Let’s talk.’ No sane people with a shred of pride would willingly accept the partition of their Capital as a subject open for discussion.

“What should have been said is: ‘No discussions; no acceptance of advisory teams of Clinton’s Leftist Jews with plans to negotiate the final status of Jerusalem. There is nothing to discuss; nothing to negotiate. We reject any and all claims on Jerusalem. From this time on we will not speak of final status [or ‘final solution’] or any creative plans to divide the City by covering the words with political trickery so cleverly crafted by Arafat and the U.S. State Department.

“The G‑d of the Jewish people gave Jerusalem to the Jewish people in perpetuity. Who would dare challenge the decision of the All‑Seeing/All‑Knowing Highest Court in the Universe?

“The corrupt nations who make up the United Nations and European Union would laugh and reject without another thought any claims to their capitals. But Jews, being so reasonable, intellectual and dedicated to talk‑talk, are willing to discuss their own ‘right to live’ and their own ‘right to their only capital: Jerusalem.’ Moreover, the Arabs, refusing to live in peace with the Jews, declared a permanent state of war and attacked Israel in six wars – pledging to drive the Jews into the sea. Jerusalem was retaken, but not until King Hussein of Jordan razed 58 synagogues and used Jewish tombstones as splash plates for urinals. Jews – have you no pride, no shame?

“Christians and Jews must let this President know that he will not be allowed to betray Israel in lock‑step with a terrorist chief who has killed and ordered the killing of many Americans and Israelis. Let your Congressmen and women (including the President’s Democratic Party), know that he and they are defying G‑d and will suffer the consequence of defying His Will. Let them know they are shaping their own curse for the audacity of challenging His Far‑Seeing Judgement.” (By Emanuel Winston, Middle East Analyst and Commentator, The Jewish Press, May 21, 1999)

“THE LATEST CLINTON CON JOB! Yes, we at AFSI too were fooled by cunning Clinton’s latest con job. When Bill Clinton exercised the waiver attached to the Jerusalem Embassy Act of 1995, we assumed that what we had been told is true – that the President had the right to stall on the building of the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem if he felt that U.S. security would be endangered. NOT TRUE! The waiver only applied to the use of money for ‘acquisition and maintenance of buildings abroad.’ It has nothing to do with stopping the relocation of the embassy from Tel‑Aviv to Jerusalem, Israel’s eternal, indivisible capital. Clinton is in violation of U.S. law – and 84 U.S. Senators wrote him a letter telling him so. It’s time the American public did the same.

“As for Hillary, now is the time to prove to her New York public that she isn’t merely mouthing statements in support of ‘indivisible Jerusalem.’ Let her use her influence with her husband and tell him to stop conning the American people and to follow through on U.S. law. As Bill Clinton pretends that what he’s doing is legal, Mrs. Clinton unashamedly panders to the public. Let her actions, not mere words, disprove AFSI’s claim that ‘Hillary Clinton is no friend of Israel.’

“Herbert Zweibon, Chairman of Americans For a Safe Israel, quote Arieh Stav, author of The Israeli Death Wish: ‘In case anyone has forgotten, Israel, and not the PLO, is Washington’s ally. Israel has five strategic agreements with the U.S., signed in 1975, 1981, 1983, 1985 and 1987... As a result, Israel is supposed to be, at least formally, Washington’s ally. On the other hand, Arafat and many of the heads of his organization are, under American law, habitual criminals, leaders of terrorist gangs...’ Zweibon asks, ‘Why, then, does Clinton continue to raise Arab expectations on Jerusalem by refusing to move the embassy? It is the Jewish capital of the Jewish State, and will never be anything else. The U.S. embassy should be moved there immediately.,” (The Jewish Press, August 20, 1999)

“THEOLOGY, WHITE HOUSE STYLE: Those who heard U.S. Vice President A1 Gore’s remarkable address on the occasion of Israel’s 50th anniversary could have been forgiven for thinking the American president‑in‑waiting an ardent Christian Zionist. Indeed, his speech at the Jubilee Bells celebration had all the ingredients of a pro‑Israel sermon.

“The tall and handsome Gore quoted from the psalm that for millennia nourished the hope of Israel’s second return to their land. He recalled the account of Jacob’s struggle with the Angel of the Lord. He paralleled Israel’s mistreatment at gentile hands with

Joseph’s cruel abuse by his brothers. He unabashedly propounded his belief that Israel’s restoration in 1948 was the fulfillment of Ezekiel’s vision about the valley of dry bones. And he closed with a traditional blessing to the God of Israel: ‘Blessed be Thou our God, ruler of the Universe, Who has kept us alive and has sustained us and brought us to this time.’

“Apart from the scriptures, Gore unhesitatingly recalled the suffering of the Jewish people through ‘the bitter centuries of your wondering and dispersion, your persecution and despair.’ Nor did he make any bones about the fact that, from the day of its birth to the present, Israel has had to struggle to survive in an extremely hostile world. He had Israelis eating out of his hand.

“Like Gore, President Bill Clinton often refers to the Bible in his speeches too, and about, Israel. Of course, it is hardly surprising that in relating to Israel people will frequently invoke scripture or references to God to support their actions or words. It was Israel, after all, who gave the Bible to mankind. And it is with Israel, more than with any other nation, that the Bible is ultimately concerned. But, as often as not, these spiritual elements have been used to deceive and disarm those who would otherwise have been on their guard. ‘Oh it’s all right,’ they say, ‘President so‑and‑so goes to church/is a Christian/has prayed with Billy Graham/believes in God so, clearly, we can trust him.’

“On a number of occasions, including in his address to the Israeli Knesset in 1994, and most recently to The Jerusalem Report (May 25, 1998), Clinton has recounted his old pastor’s warning: ‘If you abandon Israel, God will never forgive you.’ In the Report article Clinton makes a play on the words of the biblical Ruth when he tells Israelis: ‘Your struggle has become our struggle,’ and according to a close Jewish friend (also quoted in the Report), the Southern Baptist from Arkansas ‘knows the Jewish Bible and the New Testament practically by heart.’

“If this is true, Bill Clinton’s memory has lapsed on a few important occasions: On October 6, 1994, as he presided over the signing of peace between Israel and Jordan, the president exhorted the parties with what he claimed were the words of a world‑renowned Jewish Rabbi: ‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will inherit the earth.’

“In choosing to misquote Jesus, (who said the peace‑makers ‘shall be called sons of God’) Clinton either slipped up, or else purposefully twisted the scripture to substantiate what he was doing: assisting in the division of Israel’s land. Apiece, the size of the Gaza Strip, had been carved out of Israel and given to Jordan.

“On April 27, in a speech congratulating Israel on its 50th anniversary, President Clinton said: ‘As a Christian, I do not know how God, if He were to come to Earth, would divide the land over which there is dispute now... But I know that if we all pray for the wisdom to do God’s will, chances are we will find a way to close the gap in the next couple of years between what might be and what is.’

“Actually, any Christian with a knowledge of what the Bible says knows exactly how God would divide up the land – He wouldn’t.

“It is the Bible that states – without apology – that God gave the land of Israel, encompassing all of ancient Canaan, as an eternal possession to the descendants of Abraham through Isaac and Jacob. (See Numbers 34:2 and Psalm 105:8‑11)

“And it is the God of Israel who warns that He will judge the gentile nations for scattering His people and dividing up their land. (See Joel 3:2)

“No matter how fervently they proclaim their faith, the bottom line is that unless the U.S. administration changes its land‑for‑peace policy towards Israel, the very Bible Clinton and Gore use so liberally in speeches to win the trust of the Jews ultimately will show them up to be enemies when it really counts.” (By Stan Goodenough, Middle East Digest, 1999)

“HITLER’S POPE: Jewish groups have renewed calls for the Vatican to open its secret archives to scholars in the wake of the publication of Hitler’s Pope: The Secret History of Plus XII, a new book by British journalist John Cornwall.

“The book portrays the Pope as an anti‑Semite who helped Hitler consolidate power through the Vatican’s 1933 Concordat with the Third Reich ‑underscoring Jewish objections to the proposed beatification of Pius XII.” (World Jewry, October 1999)

“POPE PIUS’S 1943 LETTER AGAINST JEWISH STATEHOOD REVEALED: At the height of the Holocaust, Pope Pius XII made known to President Franklin D. Roosevelt his opposition to Palestine becoming a Jewish homeland, according to a letter from the U.S. Archives obtained by The Jerusalem Post from the Simon Wiesenthal Center.

“Dated June 22, 1943, the letter sent by A. G. Ciognani, the pope’s special representative to the U.S., to Ambassador Myron Taylor, Roosevelt’s special emissary to Pius XII, is believed to be the first explicit expression of Pius’s policy against Zionism conveyed to the American government.

“‘It is true that at one time Palestine was inhabited by the Hebrew Race, but there is no axiom in history to substantiate the necessity of a people returning to a country they left nineteen centuries before,’ the letter reads.

“‘If a Hebrew Home is desired, it would not be too difficult to find a more fitting territory than Palestine. With an increase in the Jewish population there, grave, new international problems would arise.’

“Rabbi Marvin Hier, dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, said the letter ‘is an indictment of Pius XII, because it basically says that when the pope wanted a point of view expressed about how he clearly felt, he said it clearly. Where is a similar letter to Adolf Hitler, telling Hitler that the Vatican finds his policies against the Jews repugnant? But at the height of the Holocaust, the Vatican knew how to oppose the State of Israel.’

“Rabbi David Rosen, head of the Israel office of the Anti‑Defamation League and an expert on Catholic Jewish relations, said that ‘it has been well known for a long time of the shameful policy the Holy See maintained during that period, and this is just but one confirmation of that fact.’

“Rosen said Pius’s anti‑Zionism was a continuation of long‑standing Vatican policy, which all changed with the issuing of Nostra Aetate.

“Hier said the letter, which was found last month in research being conducted on Pope Pius, further spotlights the issue of the church’s moving forward his candidacy for sainthood.

“‘Many people have asked me, what is it our business who the Catholics appoint a saint?’ Hier said. ‘Normally I would agree with that. But in the presence of survivors, tens of thousands of whom are still alive in their last few years, that they should live out their lives knowing that the person whom they heard nothing from, nothing but silence, has been designated as a saint – many people around the world will say a saint was alive in the Vatican during the Holocaust. That is an insult to the memory of the Holocaust, and is an insult to the survivors.”’ (The Jerusalem Post, July 9, 1999)

Comment: No human can appoint anyone a saint, only God can do that.

“HIER WARNS AGAINST ELEVATING POPE PIUS XII TO SAINTHOOD: According to Rabbi Marvin Hier, dean and founder of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, it would indeed be a terrible mistake in judgment for Pope John II to designate Pope Pius XII, the Pope during the Holocaust, to sainthood as Vatican experts are predicting that Pope Paul will do. Rabbi Hier reacted to the prediction by Vatican observers in his ‘State of World Jewry Address’ at the 92nd Street Y.

“Hier said that, ‘Normally, it would not be the business of Jews to tell Catholics who their saints are. But Pius XII is surely an exception to that rule, because elevating him to sainthood desecrates the memory of all Holocaust victims.’ The rabbi noted that, ‘Pius XII sat on the throne of Saint Peter in stony silence, without ever lifting a finger, as each day thousands of Jews from all over Europe were sent to the gas chambers, with his full knowledge.’

“While many Catholic leaders refuse to acknowledge the truth about the role of Pius XII during the Holocaust and distort his role by accentuating the positive, Hier firmly stated that ‘this was the same Pope who refused to issue the unsigned encyclical that his predecessor, Pope Pius XI, ordered that would have condemned racism and anti‑Semitism.’ Hier said that the encyclical that Pius XII chose to disregard ‘was written by an American Jesuit Priest, Father John LaFarge, and was on Pius XII’s desk unsigned when he died.’

“Hier pointed out that the unissued encyclical that contained strong language. of condemnation of racism and anti‑Semitism was a lost opportunity in response to Hitler’s war against the Jews. The Orthodox leader stressed that not only did Pius XII fail morally and spiritually by not issuing the encyclical, but, ‘in fact, Mother Pascalina, who served with Pius XII as chief of his household since his days as Papal Nuncio in Munich, reported that the Pope, following Hitler’s attack on the Soviet Union in 1941, said novenas for the swift victory of the Fuehrer’s armies. He continued to do this after he knew very well what Hitler had done to the Jews of Poland. Although he understood that a victory against the Soviet Union would mean instant murder of the millions of Jews living there, he prayed for a Nazi victory.’

“Hier criticized those who defend the actions of Pius XII even to this very day. The rabbi said, ‘Pius, defenders often point to the fact that former Chief Rabbi Herzog and Golda Meir praised the Pope’s efforts regarding the Jews.’ But the rabbi explained that they ‘did not see the many documents now available. In addition, they were thanking him for his efforts on behalf of the Jews of Rome whom Pius had, in fact, helped in 1943 and early 1944. But by then, the Vatican had surely concluded that Hitler would lose the war.’

“Rabbi Hier insisted that the time has come for the Vatican to come clean and open its files, so that the whole world can judge for itself how the Vatican conducted itself as six million Jews were slaughtered by the Nazi machine.” (By Marvin Greisman, The Jewish Press, May 28, 1999)

“ARAFAT HASN’T REPAID U.S. FOR ITS HELP: The writer of the October 1 letter ‘U.S.‑ Palestinian ties are hardly special’ shows his anti‑Israel mind‑set by complaining about the ‘special ties’ between the U.S. and Israel. He is dead wrong when he says the United States did not or has not intervened in the farce called the Middle East peace process on the Palestinian side.

“After all, even Israel‑bashers such as this letter‑writer have to admit that Israel has been pushed by the U.S. to continue to give up land while the Palestinians have not been pressured to stop their terrorism against the Jewish state. And while Israel has received billions in foreign aid over the years, the writer forgot to mention that it is the only democracy in the region and has voted with the U.S. in the United Nations more than any Middle East nation – many of which whom hate us.

“The writer also forgot to mention that most of the $39 million the U.S. has given Yasser Arafat and the Palestinians is missing – stolen – and unaccounted for. No wonder we have held up giving these thieves any more.” (Palm Beach Post, October 13, 1999)

“HANDSHAKE ANNIVERSARY: Historic moment in Mideast peace occurred six years ago: Six years after the historic Rabin‑Arafat handshake on the White House lawn, the Palestinians can point to a mixed bag of results from the Oslo peace process.

“Of perhaps most importance to them, the Palestinian people are closer than ever before to achieving their goal of statehood.

“During the past six years, the Palestinian Authority has received worldwide backing for the creation of a state.

“Arguably the most important support has come from President Clinton, who while not explicitly saying he backs statehood, spoke during a visit to the Gaza Strip last December of the Palestinians’ having ‘a chance to determine their own destiny on their own land.’

“And while some Israeli officials still have trouble uttering the words, it is commonly believed that the final‑status negotiation will be concluded with an agreement on an independent Palestinian state.

“The negotiation, which began last Monday, the sixth anniversary of the Rabin‑Arafat handshake, will deal with what the newly born state will look like, not about whether it should be created. Most observers agree that Israel, first and foremost, will be looking for a demilitarized state.

“The Palestinian Authority, meanwhile, has during the past six years created the ruling apparatus for an eventual state.

“The self‑rule government has a Cabinet, legislative council and government ministries that provide basic services like health and education. In addition, there is a considerable police force – far larger, according to Israeli critics, than what was agreed to in the Oslo accords – as well as a wide network of often competing security forces.

“While Israeli officials have charged that the Palestinians are in possession of illegal weapon supplies, the Palestinian Authority has no army.

“Not least of all, the Palestinians have in Yasser Arafat a leader who, despite being the target of frequent criticism, ‘still enjoys uncontested popularity,’ according to Brig. Gen. Amos Malka, the chief of Israel Defense Force intelligence.

“Despite the gains achieved since the historic September 13, 1993, handshake, the Palestinians still have numerous obstacles to overcome.

“As human rights groups have frequently charged, the Palestinians have no real democracy.

“Despite the existence of a legislature, most all important decisions are made by Arafat and his closest aides – who are frequent targets of corruption charges. Members of the legislative council have repeatedly called for a larger hand in government, to no avail.

“While there are dozens of newspapers, they are subject to close governmental scrutiny. Several editors have found themselves over the years under pressure from the self‑rule authority of the secret services, which often take over the role supposed to be handled by the Palestinian legal system.

“The self‑rule government also has a powerful internal threat in the form of the Hamas fundamentalists, who reject the Oslo process altogether. While the Hamas opposition is more or less under control of the Palestinian Authority, it hangs like a constant threat over the future of the government, particularly in a post‑Arafat era.

“On the economic level, the Palestinians are confronting many of the same woes they did six years ago.

“Unemployment is still widespread, hovering around 30 percent in most of the self-rule areas.

“Despite a massive infusion of international aid, there has been no meaningful economic revival. And given the lack of a meaningful economic infrastructure, the prospects for a turnaround anytime soon are fairly bleak.” (By Gil Sedan, Palm Beach North Jewish Journal, September 21, 1999)

“MISSIONARIES SAID TO BE BRIBING IMMIGRANTS WITH MATERIAL BENEFITS, TICKETS ABROAD: Charges that hundreds of Christian missionaries are exploiting the difficult social and economic situation of new immigrants were voiced last week by Adi Eldar, chairman of the Union of Local Authorities.

“Eldar made his charges in a letter to Internal Security Minister Shlomo Ben‑Ami, asking that he direct the police to deal with the issue. A spokesman for Ben‑ami said that the minister has not had time to consider the issue.

“However, Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi Yisrael Lau said that the law which forbids anyone from encouraging another to change his or her religion for material gain is not being enforced...

“Lau said that the missionaries work in deprived neighborhoods and offer material benefits, including air tickets abroad, so that those who convert can leave the country. He stressed that the issue of missionary activity abroad is one which should concern not just the rabbis, but all levels of society...

“According to Eldar, there are hundreds of missionaries active in local groups, such as Jehovah’s Witnesses and messianic Jewish congregations, as well as dozens of missionaries sent by groups in Europe and the U.S. He said that their activity is concentrated in localities in which there are many new immigrants, such as Upper Nazareth, Karniel, Haifa, Jerusalem, Ashdod and Beersheba.” (The Jerusalem Post, November 26, 1999)

“MISSIONARY MONEY: British based missionary organizations have an income of well in excess of $1.5 million to fund the conversion of Jews, according to a report in a British Jewish newspaper.

“According to the latest available accounts, the three major missionary groups, the Church’s Ministry Among the Jewish People, Jews for Jesus, and Christian Witness to Israel are all officially registered charities.” (World Jewry, November 1999)

“DELICACIES: An Israeli food festival held recently in Tel Aviv featured new fruit and vegetable species developed with the help of the Israeli Agriculture Ministry at the Volcanic Agricultural Institute.

“Among the new produce scheduled to be grown for export are a tiny sweet watermelon, a crossbred cucumber melon, tomatoes and peppers of all sizes and colors, as well as pears and apples which resemble oranges and melons.” (World Jewry, July 1999)

Joseph Elisha was born in Czechoslovakia in 1949. He came to Israel in 1972 and has worked for Israel and its settlers ever since. He helped Herman Bezner lay out the beautiful farm Emek Ha Shalom. He knew English and learned Hebrew to translate Bezner’s lectures from German to Hebrew.

The article The Premature End of Brother Joseph in the Jewish newspaper Yedyot Ahoronot, November 12, 1999, does not give the correct idea of Bezner’s and Joseph’s work at Emek Ha Shalom. The current theme for Bezner’s lectures was the future Israel according to the Bible. He and Joseph wanted to show how beautiful Israel could be if it was cultivated with love and care.

Bezner’s lectures reminded the many visitors to Emek Ha Shalom of Jeremiah 31:31,32: “Behold the days will come, saith the Lord, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah; not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers, in the day that I took them by the hand, to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was a husband to them, saith the Lord.”

Herman and Joseph did not teach the end of the world – the earth – but the end of “THIS PRESENT EVIL WORLD” – and epoch. They spoke of “THE WORLD TO COME” – another epoch. They knew Ecclesiastes 1:4: “the earth abideth for ever.”

The New Covenant means that you have to believe in Messiah, who gave His perfect human vital energy to mankind, and obey two great commandments. The first is: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.” The second is: “Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” (Matthew 22:37‑39)

You must not judge Joseph for his suicide. He was very overworked and couldn’t eat or sleep. He worked at the farm, he wrote letters to many friends of the true word of God according to Charles T. Russell, An early American Christian Zionist; he wrote even to us his friends in Sweden, and he took care of Herman. It was too much.

We shall remember Joseph with gratitude and honour his memory.

Anders Karlen and Leif Malmkvist                 Stockholm, December 4th, 1999.

We join with Anders Karlen and Leif Malmkvist in their love and appreciation of Joseph Elisha Schmidt. We are sure that God in His tender mercy for Joseph will reward him according to his faithfulness.

NO. 512 RETROSPECT AND PROSPECT - PART ONE

by Epiphany Bible Students

In retrospect we view the year just past with grateful hearts and realize “My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: He that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.” (Psa. 121:2‑4) “He showeth his word unto Jacob, his statutes and his judgments unto Israel. He hath not dealt so with any nation: and as for his judgments, they have not known them. Praise ye the Lord.” (Psa. 147:19,20)

As we review the year 1999, the last year of the century and the millennium, we recall that it was an eventful year of the world: The war in Kosovo, two terrible earthquakes in Turkey and others in Mexico and Taiwan, hurricanes and unprecedented flooding, both here and abroad, as well as the threat of a serious disease epidemic in New York. These are some of the occurrences of the year preceding the start of the new millennium which have caused many people to think this will be the end of the world. They are fearful for what might transpire.

In spite of all the bad things that happened in the past year, there was the gratifying knowledge that there were many good people who came to the assistance of those in the troubled areas, sacrificing their own interests and some risking their lives. This reminds us that there are still some who have a vestige of “his own image” (Gen. 1:27), in which God created man. For this we are very thankful.

“HURRICANES: CAN POWER BE SHUT OFF? Scientists are looking into covering the ocean with temporary film that would block the exchange of heat and moisture, sapping hurricanes’ strength before they hit land. MIAMI – In an attempt to give man an advantage over nature, scientists at Massachusetts Institute of Technology are experimenting with ways to thwart the power before it hits land.

“Hurricanes draw their power from warm ocean waters, and if that source of energy were cut off, the storm might die.

“This new idea has its skeptics. Some wonder what would happen if the plan went awry and somehow made the storm worse.

‘III suspect that the public might view with concern humans playing God with such potentially destructive aspects of nature,’ said Roger E. Kasperson, director of The George Perkins Marsh Institute at Clark University in Worcester, Mass., which studies natural and technological hazards.” (Excerpts from The Orlando Sentinel, July 5, 1999)

We welcome any science that can help mankind. However, in Genesis 1:28: “God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.” “The secret things belong unto the Lord our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.” (Dent. 29:29)

“BILLIONAIRE DIES IN MONACO BLAZE: 2 armed men set Edmond Safra’s penthouse on fire after he locked himself in. MONTE CARLO, Monaco – Edmond Safra, one of the world’s richest men, was killed in a fire Friday when two knife‑wielding, hooded intruders burst into his Riviera penthouse before dawn and then set the place ablaze after Safra sought refuge in a locked bathroom.

“The 67‑year‑old Lebanese banker and founder of the Republic National Bank of New York had clients in the United States, Latin America and Russia. His slaying shocked the banking world and sent shudders through this quiet principality.

“Safra and his nurse, Viviane Torrent, fled to a bathroom in the two‑story penthouse after the 5 a.m. intrusion, and both suffocated in the fire, Daniel Serdet, the chief prosecutor of Monaco, said at a news conference. His wife, Lily, and her granddaughter hid in another room and were unharmed. Safra’s male nurse, who had called police, received two minor knife wounds in his leg and stomach during a scuffle with the intruders, Serdet said.

“The billionaire’s bodyguard, who was supposed to be in the apartment, was being questioned by police Friday night about his absence at the time of the attack, Serdet said.

“The motive for the attack on Safra, who led a discreet but opulent lifestyle, was not immediately known.

“Forbes magazine this year listed Safra as one of the world’s top billionaires – No. 199. He was believed to control more than $2.5 billion and was an official resident of Monaco, a principality used as a tax haven by the very rich.

“The prosecutor said the male nurse alerted police of the presence of the armed men. Safra, who suffered from Parkinson’s disease, managed to hole up in the bathroom with his female nurse.

“Unable to reach Safra, the attackers set a fire outside his penthouse, police said. The blaze quickly spread to the domed roof of the building.”

(The Orlando Sentinel, December 4, 1999)

Comment: We have been told that Edmond Safra contributed to Israel liberally.

IN FINANCE

1999 was another record year for the economy. The stock market has been strong all year and the market hit a record high in late December. Stocks rose amid fresh signs that the U.S. economy is growing at a moderate rate. The federal government tell us that our inflation rate has been lower this year. In fact, the prime rate was raised this year to keep inflation down. There is still a good chance that in the year 2000 we will have inflation and some predictions are that we will have a soft economy starting in the second quarter of 2000.

U.S. industry output continues to grow, but factories and businesses are not stocking up to avoid supply problems that could develop from a potential year‑2000 computer glitches.

Economist David Orr, of First Union Corporation in Charlotte, N.C., pointed to recent uptakes in capacity utilization for the manufacturing sector, which was 80.12 in November, as cause for potential Fed concern. The overall figure is often disrupted by weather-dependent utilities, he said. The labor market is already very tight, and the increasing utilization of industrial capacity could give Fed policy makers another indication that the economy is reaching its limits, Mr. Orr explained. That makes Fed policy makers more likely to gradually raise interest rates which is expected in early 2000.

In the year 2000 we will have a presidential election in the U.S. There are a lot of promises being made. One that has a lot of appeal is by George W. Bush, who is Governor of Texas, and is now running for his first national election. He is recommending an across the board tax reduction. Under the Bush plan, there would be four tax brackets: 10%, 15%, 25% and 33%. The rates now run from 15% up to 39.6%. While the upper income bracket would fare very well, the lower income bracket would have more money. Under this plan, the lower income persons would have more money than under the bill that was vetoed by Clinton. However, these lower rates would be phased in and probably would be effective after 2005. Bush is proposing to raise the current $500 cap on education from IRAs to $5,000 and expand it to cover pre‑college school. That would be great as the country is having the highest high school dropout rate in history. Also, under Bush’s plan, estate and gift taxes would be repealed gradually over the next nine to ten years. However, all politicians make great promises.

Overall, the economy is good, however gold is still at an all time low which is hard to understand. The world is operating on debt. The Fed reported business debt accelerated to a 10.4% rate.

What we can do to be prepared in this Time of Trouble is to “watch and pray” (Mark 13:33) so that we will not be caught “unaware.” (Luke 21:34)

IN RELIGION

JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES: In their December 1, 1999 Watchtower, page 9, they advertise “GLAD TIDINGS” FROM THE APOCALYPSE, citing Scriptures in Revelation Chapters 20 and 21 which refer to the Thousand Year Reign of Christ and His Kingdom government and the human society where death and mourning and pain will be no more, and quote Revelation 20:6 and 21:1,4.

The Witnesses say they are really the mouthpiece of a symbolic heavenly messenger whose mission is also described in Revelation 14:6 and 11:15,17,18, which they quote. The message of the Kingdom was given by Brother Russell and his co‑laborers, and since his death Bible Student groups have continued to teach the Kingdom on earth. That Servant told us the Time of Trouble started in 1914, and it has continued to increase in intensity ever since.

With all the changes the Witnesses have made over the years, they continue to teach the great multitude of Revelation 7 as themselves – as an earthly class. The whole seventh chapter of Revelation gives two heavenly classes. The saints are the overcomers who are more than conquerors. While the great multitude, whom we call the Great Company, are overcomers but are not more than conquerors. The Great Company consecrated under the High Calling but they were crown‑losers, so are remanded to a lower heavenly class and will serve before the throne, rather than on the throne. The prototype of the Witnesses is Papacy. They too claimed to be An Angel of Light and deceived the whole world. “And ono marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.” (2 Cor. 11:14,15)

THE LAYMENS HOME MISSIONARY MOVEMENT: They are still teaching their newcomers that they can consecrate in the Camp and be ahead of the Jews in the earthly Kingdom. Not many of the Lord’s people seem to know about the Tabernacle Types. When Brother Russell read and studied 1 Cor. 10:11 he then studied the Tabernacle. When he got acquainted with the types and understood the antitypes he wrote Tabernacle Shadows. Knowing the Tabernacle types and antitypes enabled him to write the Six Volumes of Studies In the Scriptures. Too, the antitypes of the Tabernacle are a condition and not a place. The Camp condition is not for consecration until the Kingdom. Some who believe that they are now consecrated in the Camp may be in the Court condition, if they are working to develop a character fit for the Master’s use.

“THE REAL MESSAGE OF CREATIONISM: It brings religious values into schools by the back door. Why not the front? When the Kansas Board of Education voted recently to eliminate evolution from the state science curriculum, the sophisticates had quite a yuck. One editorial cartoon had an ape reclining in a tree telling his mate, “We are descended from the Kansas School Board.” The decision has been widely derided as a sign of resurgent Middle American obscurantism, a throwback to the Scopes ‘monkey trial.’

“Well, to begin with, the Scopes trial is not the great fable the rather fictional Inherit the Wind made it out to be. The instigators of the trial were not bluenosed know-nothings wanting to persecute some poor teacher for teaching evolution. They were officials of the American Civil Liberties Union so eager for a test case to overturn a new Tennessee law prohibiting the teaching of evolution that they promised to pay the expenses of the prosecution) The ACLU advertised for a volunteer and found one John Scopes, football coach and science teacher, willing to take the rap. He later said he was not sure whether he’d ever even taught any evolution.

“Son of Scopes is not quite what it seems either. The twist in the modern saga is the injection of creationism as the scientific alternative to evolution. So, let’s be plain. Creationism, which presents Genesis as literally and historically true, is not science. It is faith crudely disguised as science.

“It is not science because it violates the central scientific canon that a theory must, at least in principle, be disprovable. Creationism is not. Any evidence that might be brought – fossil, geological, astronomical – to contradict the idea that the universe is no more than 6,000 years old is simply explained away as false clues deliberately created by God at the very beginning.

“Why? To test our faith? To make fools of modern science? This is hardly even good religion. God may be mysterious, but he is certainly not malicious. And who but a malicious deity would have peppered the universe with endless phony artifacts designed to confound human reason?

“Creationism has no part in the serious curriculum of any serious country. Still, I see no reason why biblical creation could not be taught in the schools – not as science, of course, but for its mythic grandeur and moral dimensions. If we can assign the Iliad and the Odyssey, we certainly ought to be able to assign Genesis.

“But can we? There’s a rub. It is very risky to assign Genesis today. The ACLU might sue. Ever since the Supreme Court decision of 1963 barring prayer from the public schools, any attempt to import not just prayer but biblical studies, religious tenets and the like into the schools is liable to end up in court.

“That is why the Kansas school board decision on evolution is so significant. Not because Kansas is the beginning of a creationist wave – as science, creationism is too fundamentally frivolous and evolution too intellectually powerful ‑but because the Kansas decision is an important cultural indicator.

“It represents the reaction of people of faith to the fact that all legitimate expressions of that faith in their children’s public schooling are blocked by the new secular ethos. In a society in which it is unconstitutional to post the Ten Commandments in school, creationism is a back door to religion, brought in under the guise – the absurd yet constitutionally permitted guise – of science.

“This pedagogic sleight of hand, by the way, did not originate with religious folk. Secularists have for years been using biology instruction as a back door for inculcating their values. A sex‑ed class on the proper placement of a condom is more than instruction in reproductive mechanics. It is a seminar – unacknowledged and tacit but nonetheless powerful – on permissible sexual mores.

“Religion – invaluable in America’s founding, forming and flowering – deserves a place in the schools. Indeed, it had that place for almost 200 years. A healthy country would teach its children evolution and the Ten Commandments. The reason that Kansas is going to have precisely the opposite the worst of both worlds – is not because Kansans are primitives, but because a religious people has tried to bring the fruits of faith, the teachings and higher values of religion, into the schools and been stymied.

“The result is a kind of perverse Law of Conservation of Faith. Block all teaching of religious ideas? O.K. we’ll sneak them in through biology.

“This is nutty. It has kids looking for God in all the wrong places. For the purposes of a pluralist society, the Bible is not about fact. It is about values. If we were a bit more tolerant about allowing the teaching of biblical values as ethics, we’d find far less pressure for the teaching of biblical fables as science.” (By Charles Krauthammer, Time, November 22, 1999)

God’s word is true, therefore scientific. However, all translations have errors made by man. We appreciate Charles Krauthammer wanting to put in creation as the Bible teaches. So far as creation of a 24‑hour day is debatable because many do not know that a year with the Lord is a thousand years, and the seven days of creation are actually an epoch, a period of seven thousand years each. We have two articles on Creation, No. 390 and 391, which we would be glad to send anyone that requests them.

“FALWELL: ANTICHRIST IS ALIVE: WILLIAMSBURG, VIRGINIA – The Rev. Jerry Falwell said that the antichrist is probably alive today and is a male Jew. He also said he believes that the second coming of Christ will probably be within 10 years.

“In a speech Thursday about the fears people have over the new millennium, Falwell told about 1,500 people at a conference on evangelism at Kingsport, Tennessee, that the antichrist is male and is a Jew.

“‘Who will the antichrist be? I don’t know. Nobody else knows,”’ said Falwell, the minister of Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg.

“‘Is he alive and here today? Probably. Because when he appears during the Tribulation period he will be a full‑grown counterfeit of Christ. Of course he’ll be Jewish.”’ (Winston‑Salem Journal, January 16, 1999)

Comment: We have an article on Antichrist, No. 394, that tells us who he is.

“CHURCH AND HEALTH: Duke University has done a study that shows that elderly people who go to church live longer. But before you commit to trading in the golf course for a church pew on Sunday morning, you should perhaps listen to the words of the study’s lead researcher, Dr. Harold Koenig, a psychiatrist at Duke:

“‘These studies do not show that if they (the elderly) are going to church for health reasons, their health will improve. But if people go to church for religious reasons, they have better health and survive longer.’

“In other words, God can tell which of you are hypocrites. If you start going to church, you better mean it.” (A mini editorial, Winston‑Salem Journal, July 24, 1999)

CATHOLICS: “DID A WARTIME POPE ANTICIPATE A NAZI VICTORY?: Few states guard their archives more closely than the Vatican. But as the United States and other nations continue declassifying their World War II documents, more and more details of the behavior and attitude of the Vatican’s wartime leader, Pope Pius XII, have come to light.

“Now it appears that during some of the most crucial moments of the war, the Vatican believed that Nazi Germany would probably defeat the Allies. In a recently rediscovered coded cable sent to the State Department on June 29, 1942, Harold Tittmann, the U.S. envoy to the Holy See, reports that ‘a highly placed Vatican official has intimated to me for the first time... that he did not (repeat not) believe that the Allies were in a position to win the war in Europe...’

“This latest insight into the Vatican view of nazi power – combined with Pope Pius’s obsessive fear of Soviet communism – lends new understanding to the wartime pope’s refusal to unequivocally condemn the Nazi slaughter of the Jews. It also adds a new dimension to controversy over the extent of the Vatican’s participation in the postwar ‘rat‑line,’ odious underground railroad that smuggled ‘anti‑communist’ Nazi war criminals and sympathizers from Europe to Latin America – together with major parts of loot plundered from Jews and other victims of Naziism.

“A soon to be released Argentine government report confirms the Holy See’s hand in seeking Latin American visas for fleeing Nazis...

“Booty: The Vatican especially interceded on behalf of Croatia’s Ustasha Nazis, including Anton Pavelic, the Ustasha “fuhrer” who played a major role in the extermination of tens of thousands of Serbs, Jews and Gypsies. The new Argentine government report, the result of three years of intense research, confirms that senior Vatican ‘personalities’ pressed for the postwar ‘escape to Argentina of Pavelic, together with a relatively important retinue of followers and looted assets.’ Included in those assets: almost $50 million in jewelry as well as gold coins and ingots, much of it plundered from Yugoslav Jews, and part of as much as $250 million in Ustasha booty believed stashed for ‘safekeeping’ in the Vatican treasury at the end of the war.” (By Richard C. Chesnoff, U. S. News & World Report, November 15, 1999)

“INDEFENSIBLE: The Vatican has announced plans to release an archival book defending the wartime actions of Pope Pius XII. The book, Pius XII and the Second World War, is intended to counter the recently published book, Hitler’s Pope, which portrays the Pontiff as an anti‑Semite who helped Hitler consolidate power. History records that Puis XII failed to publicly denounce the Nazi persecution of the Jews.” (World Jewry, November 1999)

“POPE: HELL ISN’T HOT, BUT IT’S REAL: VATICAN CITY – Forget the flames and the devils with pitchforks. A week after telling the Roman Catholic faithful that heaven was not up in the clouds, Pope John Paul II said Wednesday that hell was not a physical place either.

“Lest sinners think they can get off lightly, though, the pontiff said hell is for real and, rather than being inflicted by God, it is something sinners bring on themselves.

“‘Hell is not a punishment imposed externally by God, but the condition resulting from attitudes and actions which people adopt in this life,’ he said.

“‘More than a physical place, hell is the state of those who freely and definitively separate themselves from God, the source of all life and joy,’ the pontiff said in a weekly audience. “‘So eternal damnation is not God’s work but is actually our own doing.’

“Churches around the world are filled with frescoes depicting tormented souls denied access to heaven populating a hideous wasteland to be tortured and suffer for all eternity.

“The pope described hell instead as ‘the pain, frustration and emptiness of life without God.’ But demons do exit, the pope said.

“‘Christian faith teaches us that there are creatures who have already given a definitive no to God. These are the spirits which rebelled against God and whom we call demons,’ he said.

“Such creatures serve as a warning for human beings, he said: ‘Eternal damnation remains a real possibility for us, too.’

“The pontiff’s end‑of‑millennium guidelines on hell came a week after he told pilgrims heaven was not ‘a physical place in the clouds but a living and personal relationship of union with the Holy Trinity,’ and that a foretaste could be had on earth.

“‘If we are able to enjoy properly the good things that the Lord showers upon us every day of our earthly lives, then we have begun to experience the joy which will be completely ours in the next life,’ he said.

“The Roman Catholic Church teaches that the good go straight to heaven, serious sinners go to hell and those who have not led perfect lives go to purgatory, a period of purification before they can enter heaven.” (By Jude Webber, Reuters, 1999)

Comment: It is Jezebel painting her face (2 Kings 9:30) in antitype.

“VATICAN ISSUES A NEW MANUAL ON INDULGENCES: Church says it won’t hurt its new agreement with Lutherans on faith. VATICAN CITY – The Vatican issued an updated manual on indulgences, offering new ways of receiving forgiveness for Catholics who courageously manifest their faith.

“Vatican officials also insisted that the new attention on indulgences – the forgiveness of sins through good works – should not harm recently improved relations with the Lutheran church.

“The new manual incorporates the pope’s directives on indulgences, including advice that individuals can do penance by such simple acts as giving up smoking for a day.

“The cardinal in charge of indulgence policy, William Wakefield Baum, was asked if this new attention to indulgence could hurt relations with Lutherans.

“‘I’m convinced that exposition of true Catholic doctrine on indulgences is a great contribution to ecumenical dialogue,’ especially with Lutherans, the cardinal said.” (Excerpts from Winston‑Salem Journal, September 19 1999)

“ORTHODOX WANT AN APOLOGY: ATHENS, Greece – Pope John Paul II must apologize for centuries of perceived Roman Catholic misdeeds against the Christian Orthodox to receive a religious welcome in Greece, Greek Orthodox Church leaders said yesterday.

“A spokesman for the synod, metropolitan Kallinkos, made clear that if the pope wants to visit he must show ‘humility and repentance’ for what some Orthodox clerics consider a long history of Vatican‑sponsored aggression and arrogance. The demand opens rifts that could embarrass political leaders and encourage anti‑papal demonstrations.” (Excerpts from Winston‑Salem Journal, September 7, 1999)

BAPTIST: “JEWISH LEADER SAYS BAPTIST RELATIONS SOUR: NEW YORK – Official relations between Judaism and America’s largest Protestant denomination, the Southern Baptist Convention, are the worst they have been in decades, a Jewish leader says.

“The rift with America’s largest Protestant group widened when its 1996 annual meeting issued a resolution urging Baptists to ‘direct our energies and resources’ to evangelism among Jews, said Rabbi A. James Rudin, the interreligious affairs director of the American Jewish Committee.

“More recently, Jewish leaders were angered when the Baptist foreign mission board issued a guide asking church members to pray for conversion of Jews to Christianity during this month’s High Holy Days of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year, and Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.

“Other U.S. Christian denominations have downplayed or repudiated such evangelism. There is little formal discussion between Southern Baptists and Jews at the national level, said Rudin, who was raised among Baptists in northern Virginia and has held many talks with conservative evangelicals in his 31 years as a participant in efforts at dialogue with Christians. ‘They’re out to convert us, so what’s there to converse about?’

“He stressed that there is great variety among the 15.9 million Southern Baptists. Many have excellent relations with Jews in local communities, he said.” (The Orlando Sentinel, September 30, 1999)

METHODIST: “RELIGION IN THE FAST LANE: The latest issue of the magazine of the American Enterprise Institute takes note of the sponsorship by the Western North Carolina Conference of the Methodist Church of a race car on the Legends circuit, where you can now see cars advertising cigarettes, beer, laundry detergent and the Methodist Church (complete with the phone number for a 24‑hour dial‑a‑prayer service).

Marketing may be called something else when it comes to religion, but its objective is the same: Get the message out. One small glitch is that the driver of the Methodist car, Sam Beam, is a Presbyterian.” (Winston‑Salem Journal, October 16, 1999)

EPISCOPALIAN: “DISPUTE OVER A PLACE FOR HOMOSEXUALS LEADING TO SCHISM IN EPISCOPAL CHURCH: BROCKTON, Mass. – When the Episcopal diocese of Massachusetts decided to bless same‑sex marriages and allow ordination of homosexuals, the parishioners at St. Paul’s wanted no part of it.

“They stopped paying the church’s annual assessment. They aligned themselves with a conservative retired bishop. And they voted to secede from the diocese and align themselves with the Episcopal Synod of America, a group of conservative bishops arid parishes.

“Last week they held services on the sidewalk after the diocese got a court order forcing them to give the building’s keys and records to a new minister.

“The dispute lays bare a growing nationwide schism between conservatives and liberals in the Episcopal Church that some conservative church leaders predict will end with a formal split between the two sides.

“‘There’s an increasingly hostile climate for orthodox Christianity within the Episcopal Church,’ said the Rev. Samuel Edwards, the executive director of the Episcopal Synod of America, based in Fort Worth Texas. ‘It’s a very serious problem.’ Edwards said that the synod already has 70 member congregations.

“Now, with more and more dioceses allowing homosexuals to become priests, dissent in the church has grown louder.

“Last summer, an international conference in Canterbury, England, approved a resolution declaring homosexual behavior incompatible with biblical teachings.

“The conference was of bishops leading the 70 million Anglicans in the world, including Episcopalians in the United States.

“After the Canterbury vote, the Los Angeles Episcopal Diocese voted to oppose the resolution.

“Edwards of the Synod said he thinks the issue will lead ‘sooner rather than later’ to a split in the Church. ‘We’ve recognized for some years that eventually what will emerge is a distinct orthodox Anglican province in North America,’ he said.” (The Associated Press, March 21, 1999)

LUTHERAN: “GENTLE PERSUASION: According to a recently aired Finnish Broadcasting Company documentary, some of the country’s leading churchmen were swayed by Nazism in the 1930s and 1940s.

“According to the program, as a result of close contacts between some Finnish and German Lutheran theologians during the Nazi era, some Finnish Children in Sunday schools during World War II were taught that it was a Jewish lie that Jesus was born a Jew.” (World Jewry, October 1999)

“DEBATE OVER: Lutherans approve alliance with Episcopal Church. DENVER – After years of debate, the nation’s biggest Lutheran organization voted yesterday to form an alliance with the Episcopal Church under which they will exchange clergy, recognize each other’s sacraments and cooperate in missionary projects. The Episcopalians are expected to approve the agreement during a convention next year.

“Opponents objected to the agreement’s requirement that Lutherans follow an ordination practice known as the historic episcopate, in which a bishop is installed by a laying‑on of hands by three predecessor bishops from a line believed to extend back to Christ’s apostles.

“Lutheran teachings do not require such historic succession, and many of the world’s Lutheran bodies do not practice it. This is the first time that any U.S. Protestant body has approved such a relationship with an American denomination that follows the historic episcopate. Catholic and Orthodox churches also follow the practice.

“Supporters said that the time had come for a change. Two years ago, the Episcopal Church overwhelmingly approved a similar alliance, but it fell just short of passage by the Lutherans. The agreement has been slightly reworked since then.

“The Lutherans have previously approved similar agreements with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), Reformed Church in America and United Church of Christ.” (Excerpts from Winston‑Salem Journal, August 20, 1999)

Comment: “Behold, they shall surely gather together, but not by me: whosoever shall gather together against thee shall fall for thy sake.” (Isa. 54:15)

“HINN IS CUTTING TIES WITH ORLANDO: Flamboyant televangelist Benny Hinn is closing his Orlando ministry and church, the World Outreach Center, four months after moving his headquarters to Texas.

“Hinn told his congregation during the summer that he was moving his headquarters to Texas because ‘God has spoken.’

“Hinn, 46, already had moved his television operation and his personal residence to Southern California.” (Excerpts from Mark I. Pinsky, The Orlando Sentinel, November 27, 1999)

Comment: Jesus healed at no charge, and even raised the dead. Jesus will resurrect everybody in due time, with no charge. (John 5:28,29 and Acts 24:15)

QUESTION OF GENERAL INTEREST

QUESTION – Do you think the Kingdom is imminent.

ANSWER – When the Time of Trouble is over the Kingdom will be even at the door. But we do not know when that will be. We know the Lord has an appointed time. “For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry [it seems to us], wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.” (Hab. 2:3)

NO. 511 THE BIRTH OF CHRIST

by Epiphany Bible Students

“Behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy.” (Luke 2:10)

The story of Jesus’ birth is one so familiar as to require no special comment, and yet in its simple details lies the hope of the whole world. Four thousand years previous the birth of this child was promised, and all the way along during those forty centuries some faithful souls continued to trust in the promises and to look for the salvation to be brought about through Him. We may surely take for granted that the humble shepherds to whom the message of the Lord’s advent first came were men who thus hoped in the promise of God: for to such, and to such only, the Lord disclosed His purposes.

These men were quietly tending their flocks by night when suddenly the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone around about them; and they were sore afraid (Verse 9). But their fear was soon overcome by the message of the angel, contained in our text, but which is only partially quoted, leaving out one of the grandest features of the message ‑viz., that it was to be to all people.

The message reads: “Fear not; for, behold I bring you good tidings, of GREAT JOY, which shall be to ALL PEOPLE.” It will be observed that the blessedness of these tidings is cumulative: first it is “good tidings”; then it is “great joy”; and then the crowning feature of it is that it is “to all people” – not only to you shepherds who are this night looking for the hope of Israel, but for all your friends and relations and neighbors far and near; and to all their friends and relatives and neighbors, both to those who now live and to those who shall live, as well as to all those now in death.

Blessed tidings! Hearken to the gladsome sound: “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” (V. 11) Then He was to be a saviour to all people: so the Scriptures clearly affirm, saying that, by the grace of God, He tasted death for every man, and that He gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time – to all. (Heb 2:9; 1 Tim. 2:6) The testimony however, is quite as necessary to the salvation of the sinner as the fact that Christ gave Himself a ransom for all. The favor of salvation will not be forced upon any; but the testimony that has been provided for every man, on condition of his acceptance of the favor upon God’s terms, is to be given to every man, for his acceptance or rejection. And though millions of the race for whom Christ died have gone down to the grave without such testimony, still the fact remains that the testimony shall be given in due time – which due time, to all such, must be after their awakening from death.

And to this agree the words of the Lord: “The hour is coming in which all that are in their graves shall hear the voice of the Son of man, and shall come forth; they that have done good [who during the present life have come into judgment and have passed their trial successfully], unto the resurrection of life [the full reward of the faithful]; and they that have done evil unto the resurrection of judgment.” (John 5:28,29) That is, the latter class will come forth from the grave to have the truth testified to them then, for their acceptance or rejection; and their final judgment of worthiness or unworthiness of life will be based upon their course under trial after the truth has been testified to them – in the Millennial Age. Thus the angel of the Lord preached the good tidings of the restitution of all things to the shepherds on the plain of Bethlehem (Acts 3:1921) .

Verse 12: Then they were told where and how they should find this Bud of promise, so that when they would see Him they might feel doubly assured that this was He. The angel gave the shepherds an intimation of the humble conditions under which this great King of earth was born into the world – as a babe, wrapped in swaddling bands and lying in a manager. This was necessary, not only to their identification of Jesus, but necessary also to bring down their thoughts from the great and grand results to its humble beginnings, lest they should be misled in their expectations.

Verses 13,14: “Then suddenly there was with the angels a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God, saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” This shows how the angels of God are interested in the affairs of men, and how they sympathize with us and rejoice over our prosperity. And this reminds us of other statements to the effect that there is joy in heaven among the angels over one sinner that repenteth (Luke 15:7); and again that they are earnest students of the plan for human salvation; and that they are all ministering spirits sent forth to minister to them who shall be heirs of salvation (1 Peter 1:12; Heb. 1:14). Thus we see them to be creatures of God full of loving benevolence even toward a fallen race, and esteeming it a privilege to serve the heirs of this salvation, although they know, as they studiously look into God’s plan, that some of this fallen race are by and by to be highly exalted, even above the angels who never sinned.

Thus we see their humble recognition of the right of the Creator to do what He will with His own, and their cheerful and joyful acquiescence to His perfect will, which they know to be determined by His unerring wisdom and His fathomless love. Oh, what universal joy will prevail when the whole family of God, in heaven and in earth is brought into fullest harmony under Jehovah’s Anointed!

Verses 15,17,18 show the teachable attitude of the shepherds: they recognized the angels and their message as from the Lord, and, their fears being allayed, their hopes revived and their faith increased, they felt that they must go at once and see this which had come to pass. After seeing the babe, as they went away they published abroad the good tidings which the angels had brought to them, and how they had actually seen Him of whom the prophets testified. There was also three wise men from the east who came to see Him, who “is born to be King of the Jews.” Upon seeing a strange star (evidently a meteor, as it could not have been a fixed star) moving in the direction which the angel had told them to go, they followed the star until they reached Bethlehem, when it stood still over the place where the young child was. And when they saw Him they worshiped Him and presented to Him gold and frankincense and myrrh, recognizing in Him the long‑promised Messiah. And being warned of God in a dream, they disregarded the request of Herod to inform him of the whereabouts of the new‑born king, and so departed into their own country another way. An angel then appeared to Joseph in a dream telling him to take the young child and his mother to Egypt. Thus Herod’s threat to the child was thwarted (Matt. 2:1‑13).

Verse 19: “But Mary [mother‑like] kept all these things and pondered them in her heart,” doubtless calling to mind also the message of the angel to her (Luke 1:28‑35). Again and again we seem to hear her say, “My soul doth magnify the Lord... for he that is mighty hath done to me great things, and holy is his name.” (Luke 1:46‑59)

Verse 20: The shepherds returned to their flocks, fully assured of the wonderful truth that the promised seed of the woman who was to bruise the serpent’s head had really come. And they rejoiced and glorified God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as they were told unto them.

“Unto you is born this day in the city of David a saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:11) That our Lord existed prior to His incarnation, and in a more exalted nature and condition, is clearly stated in the Scriptures. (See John 17:5; 2 Cor. 8:9; John 1:13,10; Eph. 3:9; Col. 1:15‑17; Heb. 1:2; Rev. 4:11)

This change of nature was a miracle, the philosophy of which, like that of all miracles, transcends the limits of human thought; and like all other miracles, it was performed to meet an emergency for which no natural law could otherwise provide. The philosophy of the Divine plan of redemption which required it is, however, very manifest to the thoughtful mind guided by the Scripture statements. The Son of God was made flesh that He might give His flesh – His humanity – for the life of the world; that as by man (Adam) came death, so by man (“the man Christ Jesus”) might come the resurrection of the dead (John 1:14; 6:51; 1 Cor. 15:21). In other words, He was transformed from the spiritual to the human nature, so that in giving His life for the world’s redemption He might give the exact equivalent or corresponding price for that which was lost.

For the sake of brevity we must of necessity pass by many points of interest connected with this narrative of our Lord’s birth, e.g. the prophecies of His coming (Gen. 3:15; 22:18; 49:10; 2 Sam. 7:12‑16; Isa. 9:6,7; 11:1‑9; Dan. 9:24, etc.); the date of His birth; His human lineage as Son of David and of Abraham, and His Divine origin as the only begotten Son of God; and, lastly, the condition of the world at His advent. But these the student can with profit look up for himself.

On the last point, however, we would have none fail to observe the evidences of the Lord’s preparatory overruling providence in so shaping the world’s affairs to accomplish the purposes of His plan at that time: in due time the very best medium for the communication of the Gospel of the New Covenant.

(4) It was a time, too, of increased intellectual activity, which was ready to operate on this and every other question of public interest. Thus the circumstances of the time were peculiarly adapted to the announcement of this wonderful event – the advent of the world’s Redeemer. The fullness of time had come, and under the overruling providence of God, the conditions were ripe.

It is worthy of notice that the announcement of the Saviour’s birth was not made to an assembled world, in whose most vital interest He had come, nor even to assembled Israel, the chosen people of God; nor yet to all of those who, like Simeon and Anna, with devout hearts had long been looking for the hope of Israel. But it was made to only a few devout shepherds who were watching their flocks by night. The grand truth was one to be received by faith; and it was sent through humble, but trustworthy, human agents, who were the honored instruments in God’s hands. And any who proudly despised the instruments were unworthy of the good tidings.

The announcement was one which modern “orthodoxy” could not justify; for it was the very reverse of its bad tidings of great misery to nearly all people. The angel’s message was, “good tidings of GREAT JOY TO ALL PEOPLE; for unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.”

The tidings are of redemption and restitution and everlasting life for all who will accept this blessing on the terms on which it is offered – viz., faith in Christ as the Redeemer, and full repentance from sin, which of necessity implies the forsaking of sin and cultivation of righteousness. Christ was born to be a Saviour by subsequently giving His life a ransom for all. These good tidings – this miracle of Divine goodness and mercy to fallen and doomed mankind – met a marvelously cold and indifferent reception. The world in general, though apprised of the fact and its import, manifested no faith nor interest in it, while it is written that He came unto His own people (the Jews), and they received Him not. But the jubilant heavenly hosts, who were capable of appreciating what fallen men could not appreciate, and will not until their blind eyes are opened and their deaf ears unstopped, broke out in a rapturous strain of heavenly melody, saying: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” (Luke 2:14)

The full import of this song will not be fully realized by mankind until the Millennial reign of Christ shall proffer them full emancipation and deliverance from sin and its entailments.

“Thou shalt call his name Jesus, for he shall save his people from their sins.” (Matt 1:21) We have elsewhere presented the Scriptural evidences that the date usually celebrated as the anniversary of our Lord Jesus’ birth is incorrect and that, instead of being December 25, BC 4, it really was about October 1, BC 2; nevertheless this need not mar our pleasure, nor our appreciation of the great fact so generally celebrated on the wrong date; for its lessons are as appropriate to one date as to another.

The great thought is that the first‑born of every creature left the glory of a spirit existence, the glory which He had enjoyed with the Father before the world was made, and in conformity to the Divine plan for human salvation, “humbled himself” to human nature, became a man, “was made flesh, and dwelt among us.” (John 1:14; Phil. 2:7,9)

But why did He do this? The Scriptures reply that He took our form and nature – the form of a servant – for the suffering of death. It was for the sin of man that He was to atone; and, to do so, to pay our debt, to give our ransom price, to be our substitute, He must be a man; that as by a man came death, by a man also should come the resurrection of the dead.

No wonder, then, that the birth of the babe Jesus, the first step in the Divine plan for salvation from sin and death, was hailed by angels as well as by wise men and the shepherds as most notable, as a most momentous event. And only those who see quite clearly the necessity for a ransom (a Corresponding price), before sin could be forgiven or one member of the condemned race of Adam could be set free from the death penalty resting upon all, can appreciate the depth of meaning there is in that song which the angels sang.

The infant Jesus was the first ray of light and hope to mankind; because He would become a man, and as the man would give His life a ransom for Adam and all condemned in him; and thus, by virtue of having paid our price, “bought us with his own precious blood [His life given],” He would be legally qualified before the Divine law to be the “Mediator of the New Covenant,” which He sealed or made effective with His own precious blood; “the blood of the New Covenant shed for many for the remission of sins.” (Matt. 26:28)

The great plan for human salvation, begun by the birth of Jesus, has not yet reached completion. It will not be complete until his people have been saved from their sins and from the penalty of their sins – death, which includes degradation – mental, moral and physical. The ransom, thank God, has been paid, and Justice has accepted it; and now the Mediator of the New Covenant is seeking out “his people.” First, during the Gospel Age, He seeks His peculiar people, His “Bride”; and in the age to follow this, the Millennium, he will cause the knowledge of the Divine offer of life under the terms of the New Covenant to be made general; all shall know, and then “whosoever will may take of the water of life freely.” And all whom He now is, or ever shall be willing to own as “his people,” will gladly avail themselves of that New Covenant’s gracious arrangements and return to full favor with God; all others will be willful sinners, and as such will be cut off from life in the Second Death.

How strange that any should refuse to see the very plain statement of the Scripture that God has provided through Christ that every member of the human family shall have a full opportunity of coming to a knowledge of the truth, and then of relinquishing sin and of accepting new life of righteousness under the New Covenant – and that then whoever still refuses and will not submit himself to this righteous arrangement shall be utterly destroyed from amongst the people – in the Second Death, that none will be suffered to live in sin and opposition to God to blemish any part of God’s dominions, but that all the incorrigible shall be as though they had not been. In no other way can we possibly imagine that the time will ever come when there will be full peace among men.

The only solution which God offers respecting the establishment of peace is in connection with the establishment of His Kingdom, for which our dear Redeemer taught us to pray, “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is done in heaven.” That will mean peace in its fullest and most absolute sense. The Scriptural proposition does not include the violation of any man’s will, but merely the offering through Christ of an opportunity for his everlasting blessing and peace, or his cutting off it he fails to appreciate the Divine offer.

The shepherds having heard of God’s grace manifested their interest by visiting and paying their homage to the Saviour; and so each one who has heard of the grace of God with an appreciative heart can do nothing less than seek the Lord and do Him reverence and serve His cause by proclaiming the gracious message with which he has been favored. Let us each do so, and thus more and more increase in our hearts the joys of the Lord and our appreciation of His grand gospel. (Gal. 3:8,16,29)

Then, let us, who know the blessed story of the love of God in Christ tell abroad the gracious message, the foundation for which was laid in the birth of Jesus – “Behold, we bring you glad tidings of great joy, which shall be unto all people.” “He shall save his people from their sins.” Let us make sure that we have accepted Him and are “his people.” Let us be true wise men and present to Him our treasures – all that we have and are – our hearts.

‘NIGHTLINE’ & ABC NEWS IGNORE ISRAEL’S EARTHQUAKE RELIEF EFFORTS IN TURKEY

New York State Senator Seymour P. Lachman (D‑Brooklyn) called Ted Koppel host of the ABC television network program Nightline and on the producers of ABC News, to review their editorial judgment in reporting events regarding the State of Israel.

“Alone among major national and local news media,” Senator Lachman stated. Nightline and ABC News failed to report that the State of Israel dispatched the first, and initiated the largest, rescue team to Turkey, following the recent massive earthquake. On August 17, ABC’s Nightline devoted a segment to the devastation and duly noted that the United States, Germany and Greece were aiding in rescue efforts.” the Senator observed.

“Nightline and ABC News can hardly claim that this assistance was unknown when it broadcast its August 17 program, since earlier in the day Israel’s contributions were reported by NBC News, which aired videotape of Israeli rescue efforts.

“The next day, on August 18, when The New York Times reported on special equipment sent by Israel to extract survivors from beneath earthquake rubble, a distinguished physicist from New York University’s Courant Institute, who had viewed the Nightline broadcast, contacted the program’s staff to inquire about its failure to report Israel’s assistance. He was informed by a Nightline spokesperson: ‘We did not list all the countries assisting in the rescue effort. Koppel chose to highlight just a few of the countries and the teams helping in order to provide a more specific example of the rescue effort.’

“Interestingly, there was no mention of the State of Israel which was the first to arrive, with the largest number of rescue and relief workers.

“Nightline, in its failure to inform viewers of Israel’s rescue efforts in Turkey, has demonstrated poor editorial judgment regarding an example of unstinting humanitarian cooperation in the face of overwhelming loss of life.

“Nightline and ABC News owe viewers better judgment, and an apology to the distinguished member of the Courant Institute for its cavalier dismissal when that poor judgment was brought to the attention of its staff.” (The Jewish Press, September 3, 1999)

PAPAL COMMENTS ON HELL RECEIVE WARM RECEPTION

With a new pronouncement from Pope John Paul II and temperatures in Central Florida pushing 100 degrees, hell is on people’s minds.

Last week, the pope defined hell, telling Catholics it is not a physical place and there are no flames – at the very least calling into question a thousand years of Christian art and a century of irreverent cartoons.

The pontiff’s remarks surprised few area religious leaders, who supported his position.

“The pope basically reiterated standard Catholic teaching” that hell is a state, rather than a place, said the Rev. Joseph Harte of Orlando’s Mary, Queen of the Universe Shrine.

“There is very little known about hell,” Harte said. “You can’t use hell as a deterrent, like the electric chair.”

The Rev. Charles Horton of College Park Baptist Church agrees. “I think the pope has helped us to bring about an awareness of the fact that people make a virtual hell on earth for themselves by their choices and lifestyle,” he said. “Hell is eternal separation from God’s love. A separation from God is worse than fire.”

For Lutherans, hell is “the logical consequence of the choices that human beings make in excluding God from our lives,” said the Rev. Barry Snowden, of Epiphany Lutheran Church in Oviedo.

The concept of hell has long had a hold on the popular imagination. Dante, in the 14th century, and Milton in the 17th century, told a story of cosmic rebellion in which Satan (Lucifer) and his angels rebelled against God, only to be cast out of Heaven, and into their underworld domain.

In the 1700s, scientists thought hell might be on the sun or a comet. In the past decade, Trinity Broadcasting Network and other evangelical organizations spread tales that in Russia, a microphone lowered two miles below the surface of the earth had recorded the sound of souls in torment.

The notion of a physical hell after death predates Christianity. For ancient Greeks, it was Hades, surrounded by the River Styx. The dead were ferried across by the boatman Charon. Their concept of the afterlife evolved from a muddy bog to what the philosopher Plato called a place of “temporary punishment for the curably wicked and eternal punishment for the incurably wicked.”

For Greek Orthodox Christians, hell is “a separation from God, that in our exercise of free will we bring upon ourselves,” said the Rev. Mark Elliott, of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Maitland. “The soul is in torment because it is separated from God.”

In the Old Testament, some believe it is the underworld of Sheol, which can be translated simply as “the grave.” Other rabbis, in the 2nd century BC, believed it was Gehenna, named for an infamous valley south of Jerusalem where an early pagan cult sacrificed children. Gehenna was considered “a cosmic disposal site for the wicked,” according to historian Alan Weinstein, author of The Formation of Hell.

Today, Jews don’t talk much about hell from the pulpit, said Rabbi Alan Londy, of Temple Israel in Orlando.

“Clearly, hell is a biblical, Jewish idea,” Londy said. “But the issue is, what does that term actually mean?”

The following was sent by Lev and Hava Bausch:

DANGEROUS AMERICAN MISFITS

For the most part, America really is a wonderful country – the land of opportunity, freedom and democracy, and the beacon of individual liberty.

But with so much going for them over there, the gun culture defies all understanding. Violence is certainly not unique to the US on average, its citizens are probably not crazier than in other countries. In the Middle East, Arabs and Jews have been killing each other for the better part of a century. As we were reminded this week. terrorism is still a daily threat.

The Indians and Pakistanis are no better. Indeed, it is difficult to find any part of the world where different groups are not fighting for some ideology or land to call their own.

But there are some important differences that set the violence in America apart from the rest of the world. The murderers who spray their high‑school classmates with machinegun bullets, or who walk into a local Jewish community center and shoot at children, are not fighting for a nation or for a cause (not that this excuses violence and terror). Instead, they are maladjusted crazies, neo‑Nazis, and psychotics. They are angry at the world, filled with jealousy and hate, and unable to fit into normal social frameworks.

Such people exist in every society, including Israel’s. But only in America, the land of opportunity and individual freedom taken to its irrational extreme, can every crazy fill his car with guns, bullets, and explosives. The random violence in the US is a plague, and has turned this beacon of freedom into a fear‑ridden society, in which the threat of murder is always present. Car hijacking and drive‑by shootings are common occurrences. No one can feel safe.

After decades of mounting violence, it is clear that the American people, for all their virtues, are simply unable to cope with this cancer that is destroying them. In 1963, John F. Kennedy was shot by a social misfit using a mail‑order rifle; since then, the toll has mounted, but nothing has been done to cure the disease.

While all the polls indicate popular support for far‑reaching limitations on the ability to purchase guns and other lethal weapons, the power of the gun lobby in the US remains dominant. The National Rifle Association has been able to wrap itself around the flag through a warped interpretation of the American Bill of Rights.

But the rights to bear arms and to maintain a well‑regulated militia were rooted in the historical context of the war with the British over 200 years ago. This basic right of self‑determination and self‑defense has absolutely nothing in common with neo‑Nazis and gun‑nuts.

In the world’s greatest democracy, the people seem unable to be organized and mobilized enough to choose leaders who will act responsibly to end this farce. Under these circumstances, the Americans could use some major foreign aid.

In its relationship with Israel, Washington has always been very generous with its assistance, both substantively, and in terms of advice on the great issues of war and peace. This is an opportunity for the Jewish people to return the favor, and help the US out of its self‑imposed misery.

The Bible, a sacred document a few thousand years older than the American Constitution, lays down the basic rules for any civil society, including the prohibition against murder. No exceptions are made for members of hate groups, and a society that cannot prevent murder has no future. Sodom and Gomorrah have disappeared from the face of the earth. Americans pride themselves on their religious (mainly Christian) devotion, and the time for them to return to these basics is long overdue.

Jewish law also prohibits placing an obstacle in the path of a blind person. With the knowledge that there will always be maladjusted individuals and social misfits in any society, and that they are prone to be violent, allowing them access to weapons is like dropping a boulder in front of a blind man.

Any personal stress or crisis, real or imagined, will set off the chain of events leading to yet another mass killing. The guns, bullets, and other implements of destruction must be put out of reach and harm’s way.

To be the world’s leaders, respected around the globe, it is not enough to have the world’s richest economy or the most powerful army. America leads the world first and foremost by example, from food and fashion, to democracy and human rights.

But when it comes to free access to guns, the rest of us draw a line. With every act of mass and random violence, the influence of the US declines even further. As long as anyone in the US can obtain and carry a gun, walk into a public place, and start shooting, America will fail to be a moral model for the world.

LETTER OF GENERAL INTEREST

Dear Emily,

We just want to send our love from the shores of the Sea of Galilee once again. Sadly the shores are getting bigger and the lake smaller as we still await some rain to water this thirsty land. Please pray we get early rains, as sometimes it can remain dry into November.

Thank you for your letters, and we pray you are feeling well. Thank you for the newsletters you and those helping you so faithfully send out. I know getting a publication together is not always an easy task. But you are blessing others, and we are so thankful for your stand for Israel! You had some good articles in the September/October issues. It is so important to bring out the one‑sidedness of the media, and how they are not objective in their reporting. That was a good example of the reporter Charley Reese!

We also know how people can change as even Martin Luther did. At first he was all for the Jews when he came out of the Catholic Church, but later turned so hateful that many of his ideas and statements against the Jews were used against them by Hitler – with the blessings of the churches!

Yes, I do think the media was very vicious against Netanyahu, and the pressures upon him were so heavy that he really “gave in” at the end. I think he was in a way glad he did not win and was out from under the burden.

Now Barak is into giving the Land back to Mr. Arafat for his smile and handshake! It is wonderful to know God will overrule all things.

Barak’s government is a very splintered group with so many different parties with a lot of opposing ideas. Something like a bomb waiting to explode with only a spark.

As you probably heard we had a car bomb last week here in Tiberias about ten blocks from us. I had just been on the spot a couple of hours before. It is really a miracle that the bomb went off prematurely on a street not in the center of the city where more people would have been killed or hurt.

We were a bit surprised to read the letter of Leif after his visit to Emek ha Shalom and that maybe Josef and Herman would live for a time at one of the settlements. After Lev got back from his father’s funeral (the end of May) we tried to contact Josef again. We even had friends who visited Emek ha Shalom in August but did not find Josef. It seemed that also the mobile phone that Josef had was not working, so we also were very concerned. Then yesterday Josef called us. He had been in the hospital for three weeks last month due to his digestive problems, and his mobile phone was stolen. He has gained some weight now, and is improving.

It seems we are having disasters on every hand – one can hardly keep up with them. Israel has been blessing her neighbors in their sorrows. Turkey is 20 times bigger than Israel and yet this tiny nation sent nearly 20 plane loads of aide to the people of Turkey including food, blankets, clothing, big equipment to dig people out of the rubble (they saved about 20 people alive), sniffer dogs to find people, a 100 bed field hospital with Israelis doctors and all, and a communication system. Then the earthquake happened in Greece and tiny Israel again sent aide to help save people. Thank the Lord that despite all of Israel’s problems they are still ready in a moment to help others.

Now Russia is feeling the pains of terrorists attacks right on their doorsteps. No nation is spared these troubles now – big or small.

Here many are concerned when we will have a big earthquake. as we sit on one of the biggest fault lines in the world. The last big earthquake in Israel was 1927 and destroyed much or Tiberias/Safed, etc. so it seems we are over‑due.

How wonderful to know our days are in the Lord’s hands from morning to morning? So great to know God is the “shomer” (guard) over Israel, and does not sleep day or night.

Lev has not felt the best since his trip to his father’s funeral... Please pray for him!

Well, Israel just started the year 5760 on the Jewish calendar and we can only pray for God’s mercy on His people day by day in the year ahead. Things change so fast here that we do not dare miss one day of news.

The Lord is blessing our small Bed/Breakfast by bringing guests. We were especially busy in July and August with families, and now will have guests during the holiday period here. We thank Him for this provision!

May the Lord bless you in every way! In His great love, Lev and Hava (ISRAEL)

NO. 510 ABOUT CASIMIR LANOWICK

by Epiphany Bible Students

This article about Casimir Lanowick was submitted by Elva Lanowick, along with this note:

Thought you might like to see this copy of an account about Casimir’s work that I have submitted to Alisa Klausner Ber at her request. She is planning to write about Christian workers for Israel and wants to include information about Casimir.

Alisa is related to the late Dr. Joseph Klausner, well–known author in Israel who wrote, among other things, a book about Jesus. Possibly as a result of this, Alisa told us many years ago that she has always had a special interest In Christians who love Israel. She is a member of the Israel Interfaith Committee.

Alisa comes from pioneer stock in Israel and has known well, from her childhood, most of the early leaders of the Jewish State – David Ben Gurion, etc. She is married to Baruch Ber who has also been active in politics In Israel and on the editorial staff of the fine newspaper called HA’ARETZ.

Some of my friends remember her well as the dynamic personality who spoke to any number of our Israel tour groups. She told us back in 1955 that she considers Christians who work for Israel as “the saints of all the world,” as the Psalmist put it.

(By Elva Lanowick)

THE WORK OF CASIMIR LANOWICK – 1917 – 1980

Both Casimir and I were raised by Protestant Christian parents who had firm convictions regarding the ultimate rebirth of the Jewish nation as promised by the Hebrew prophets – a restoration that would have profound impacts not only for the Jewish people but also for the blessing of all mankind.

Before we knew each other, separately we read an excellent small book entitled ZIONISM IN PROPHECY, by Professor Franklyn Hudgings, published in 1936 by the Pro–Palestine Federation of America. Casimir was so impressed by this well–documented treatise that, typical of his special character trait of taking action upon his beliefs, at the young age of 19 he purchased and personally circulated many copies of ZIONISM IN PROPHECY which, incidentally, though written by a Christian scholar, carries the endorsement of Dr. Hirsch Loeb Gorton and was reviewed favorably by any number of leading U.S. Zionists of that era.

So it was only natural that when the United Nations voted in 1947 in favor of a Jewish state, Casimir was deeply moved by this development. That same year he commenced publishing, with my help, a magazine to report news about the prospect of Israel’s reconstitution as a nation, in a passionate endeavor to arouse the Christians of America as to the tremendous significance of the imminent rebirth of Israel. This news digest was entitled THE JEWS IN THE NEWS and later changed to ISRAEL’S RESTORATION NEWS.

Of course, when the dramatic date of May 14, 1948 saw the creation of the official state of Eretz Israel, our excitement grew more intense and we could never find enough space in the columns of our monthly publication to include all the truly meaningful reportage of events in that fledgling nation. Frequent reference was made to the very pertinent prophetic Scriptures which had so graphically foretold, some 2500 years previously, and even earlier, the details of this historic rebirth of the ancient nation of Israel. But it was a down-to-earth magazine, reporting on all aspects of life in the new state, whether related to agricultural revival, military achievements, the ingathering of the exiles, etc., so that the readers could hardly gainsay the depth of meaning of it all.

This endeavor to awaken Christians in the U.S. as to the great significance of Israel met, in those early years, with much skepticism among most Christians, and even Jews, who could not conceive that the tiny new nation could survive the tremendous pressures exerted against it by powerful and rich Arab enemies. It was our aim to be one of the voices of assurance.

Subscriptions to our news organ began to come in to our office in Redwood City, California, from all the then 48 states and even from many foreign countries, i.e. Canada, England, East and West Germany, France, Hungary, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Holland, Denmark and others. Because Israel was not a popular subject among the average Christians in those years, we never felt that our publication had the scope of readership it deserved. Yet there was a corps of regular readers, including many influential Christians of all denominations, who were eager to be kept informed regarding the progress in the Jewish State, and in looking back later we realized that our trail-blazing efforts were a considerable factor in bringing about the groundswell of Christian support for Israel that began in the 1970’s.

Even as Theodor Herzl paradoxically met strongest opposition from among the rabbinical leaders of his time, so we found that ministers in the United States were least likely to respond to the message of Israel restored. However, in almost every church were the one’s and two’s whose parents and grandparents had told them that when the Jews would go back to their homeland, it would usher in the Messianic era of peace and righteousness for all mankind. These individuals often became firebrands of zeal concerning the historic significance of modern Israel. We derived much encouragement from these ardent readers, counteracting the general apathy and often open hostility of many of our peers. It is no surprise to the initiated that even anti-Semitism bared its well-entrenched fangs. Under the circumstances, you can understand that financial pressures were always a fact of life for us.

The Central Zionist Archives in Jerusalem requested, from time to time, that we make sure that a copy of each issue of THE JEWS IN THE NEWS (later ISRAEL’S RESTORATION NEWS) be sent to them, so if you wish, Alisa, you could examine these in their files to get an idea of the nature of our monthly Israel news digest.

In 1950 Casimir and I made our first trip to Israel, equipped with the latest and finest cameras. Between November of that year and March of 1951 we visited almost every important settlement, site, city and village, including Eilat when the only structure there was an army barracks. (We took panoramic motion pictures here and footage all over the country – of immigrants arriving by the thousands at the port of Haifa, of the maabarot camps, youth aliya villages, etc.) As you can imagine, this opportunity to go to Israel during those momentous times of its national beginnings, the days of tzena, the days of euphoria amidst harsh hardship, was a highlight in our lives. We also had the joy of becoming acquainted with many Israeli of diverse backgrounds – pioneers, refugees from the Nazi holocaust, Yemeni recent arrivals on the “Magic Carpet” looking for all the world like they had stepped right out of the pages of the Bible, etc. These early contacts would always be precious to us, even though we returned to Israel many times afterward.

On our way back to America via Europe, Casimir was asked to lecture in Italy, Germany and England regarding his findings in the new Jewish State. We also made a special trip to Basel, Switzerland so as to see the hall in which Theodor Herzl held the First Zionist Congress in 1897 (has since been torn down).

Our illustrated lecture activities began in earnest in the U.S. in July of 1951 when we commenced what would eventually be about ten years of cross–country engagements – six months of each year presenting the story of Israel by word and film, and then often but irregularly through the years right up until his death. Eventually our lecture work expanded into Canada, England and Wales, and especially to Australia and New Zealand where, in 1960, we were able to carry on an indepth coverage of these two down–under lands with our Israel presentation, over a six–month period. Our audiences in this part of the world included many Jewish people.

The films we had taken in Israel, with the aim of more effectively portraying the historic dimensions of the rise of Israel, received fine reviews, but even more important was the exceptional ability Casimir had as a dedicated and dynamic speaker, consistently able to inspire his audiences. His warmth, his vast store of knowledge about modern Israel, the judicious use of the Biblical tie-up, always elicited genuinely enthusiastic response. Casimir’s keen sense of humor spiced his otherwise serious but not pontifical delivery. He liked to use the term “educationally entertaining” in publicizing his illustrated lectures.

These film programs were presented in churches of almost every denomination, for service organizations such as Rotary, Lion’s Club, etc., and we were also sponsored at times by the Zionist Organization of America, Hadassah, and even individual lovers of Israel. Then, too, quite frequently we personally engaged auditoriums, placed newspaper advertising and thus sponsored some of our own very successful meetings. We carried along a very interesting display of Israel products and included Israeli folksongs with each program.

Eventually we came to the realization that an even better way to introduce the magic of Israel to the general public would be to escort them to Israel to see for themselves the marvelous achievements of the sons of Jacob restored to their land. Through our magazine readership and our lecture contacts we organized our first group tour in 1955. (This was when we had the privilege of meeting you, Alisa.) We spent a full 35 days in Eretz Israel that spring, determined to give our Christian friends as thorough an overview of Israel as possible under the circumstances.

As you know, after that we took many tour groups to Israel. We were mindful of the deficiencies of the average Christian “Holy Land” tours – the bypassing of much of the miracle of modern Israel in favor of mostly churches and other so–called “holy places.” Casimir also steadfastly refused to take short tours to Israel, even though we realized that we could have attracted many more tour members by offering cut–rate 7 or 10–day tours or by including Arab countries, European stopovers, etc. The testimonials we accumulated after the tours ended convinced us that our traveling companions were indeed returning home well–informed, deeply impressed and ready to become eager supporters of Israel’s goals and political stance. You are aware, too, that we also put much stress on the importance of introducing our touring friends to the people of the Land – Israeli from all walks of life, Jewish, Arab and Christian, so that they could catch the unusual spirit of the country, ask questions, etc.

By the way, in 1958 and 1959 we took time off to experience living in Israel, renting a lovely home in Talpioth, then a quiet suburb of Jerusalem, continuing to publish our Israel magazine wherever we went (until about 1968); we welcomed this opportunity to get even better acquainted with the Land and with the Israeli. Again new and lasting friendships were forged and our work for Israel took on an added important dimension.

Frequently from the years 1953 to 1979 we also arranged for any number of Israel seminars – both national and regional, at such scenic spots as the Grand Tetons, beautiful Asilomar by the Sea, Rocky Mountain National Park, etc., bringing in Israeli speakers and Christian leaders well versed as to Israel’s modern history in the light of the Bible. We enjoyed our relationship with the late Dr. G. Douglas Young because of his unflagging zeal for Israel and I recall with joy the worthy contribution he made to our 1979 Israel Seminar. Soon after that, in May of 1980, he died, and Casimir passed away only about five months later.

It was about the time that Israel became a state that we heard Dr. and Mrs. Walter Clay Lowdermilk speak at a large Zionist rally in San Francisco, renewing our admiration for their selfless devotion to the concept of a Jewish State, dating back to 1939. Our first tour group had the privilege of being entertained by the Lowdermilks in their fine house atop Mount Carmel in 1955. I mention this to lead up to the fact that when Dr. Lowdermilk died Casimir was moved to do something to commemorate the valuable work Dr. Lowdermilk had done for Israel – devising the national water plan, helping advance Israel’s agriculture in the. early years of statehood, establishing the Lowdermilk School of Agricultural Engineering at the Technion in Haifa, using his high station in the U.S. Government to influence administration policy, etc. (As you know, Mrs. Lowdermilk herself had spoken tirelessly on behalf of Israel while they were stationed in Washington, D.C. and after their return to Berkeley, California, where Dr. Lowdermilk taught at the University of California. Even to this date, at the advanced age of 92, Inez Lowdermilk retains a strong and active commitment to Israel.)

Casimir felt that the most appropriate memorial to Walter Clay Lowdermilk would be a forest planted in his honor in Israel. Always impressed by the work of Keren Kayemeth in planting trees, restoring the land, etc., Casimir proposed to the San Francisco chapter of the Jewish National Fund that such a forest project be commenced. With the help of the California Christian Committee for Israel, the fund–raising got under way. Casimir and I had the privilege of doing most of the work on this project, and after much persistence the full sum of $10,000 was raised, plus further amounts for a recreation area within the forest at Mrs. Lowdermilk’s request.

So, in March of 1976, Mrs. Lowdermilk was the guest of honor on one of our Israel tours organized specifically to include the dedication of the Lowdermilk Memorial Forest on Mt. Turan in the Galilee. How encouraged Casimir was when Golda Meir accepted his invitation to meet Mrs. Lowdermilk at the airport and join our tour group for dinner at the Sharon Hotel in Herzlia. It meant so much to Casimir to do something meaningful, to give recognition and encouragement to this valiant Christian woman and to honor the memory of her truly great husband. Needless to say, the hours spent with “Golda” were precious.

Not long after this project was finished we were asked by some Christian lovers of Zion in the U.S. to organize the “Christian-Israel Friendship League.” So this was done in 1978, but within two years Casimir had died and the loss of his unique leadership meant that the work of this league diminished considerably.

However, Casimir lived to see a new page in the history of Christian Zionism – the emergence of grass-roots groups of Christian supporters of Israel all around the United States, and, in fact, all around the world. You cannot imagine how excited Casimir was about this development and how enthusiastically he planned to cooperate with them in their worthy endeavors. For instance, Casimir was the U.S. National Coordinator for the First International Congress for the Peace of Jerusalem held in Israel’s capital city in 1978, at which time about 1,000 Christians from many countries gathered to express support for Israel. The next year, when the idea of a Christian celebration of the Feast of Tabernacles in Jerusalem was proposed, Casimir got busy and wrote the organizers expressing his delight and started working to organize a tour to take in this first “Feast of Tabernacles” Christian gathering.

But it was not to be. In retrospect, I am convinced that Casimir’s work was done and the torch was being passed on to other zealous Christian lovers of Israel. You no doubt know about the 4,000, 5,000, and then 6,000 Christians from as many as 40 countries who have participated in the subsequent annual Feast of Tabernacles assemblies in Jerusalem. Casimir never considered himself indispensable, and how happy he would be today to see the ever–increasing numbers of Christians who are espousing the cause of Eretz Israel, the nation of destiny. (Elva)

P.S.. Are you familiar, Alisa, with the Christian–Zionist work of the late Charles Taze Russell between the years of about 1881–1916? He wrote and lectured extensively about the hopes of Israel restored, based on the Biblical record. His weekly articles were carried in hundreds of newspapers around the United States, so whenever he wrote about the Jews returning to “Palestine,” his firm convictions received wide coverage. He also addressed large Jewish audiences in the U.S. at the Hippodrome, in London, and around Western and Eastern Europe. He was aroused by the pogroms at Kishenev and elsewhere in Russia. It is touching to note how eagerly “Pastor” Russell reported the smallest developments in Palestine when the first aliya was taking place. A former student at the Hebrew University told us back in 1950 that when they studied Christian Zionism at this university, Charles Taze Russell was at the top of the list.

(Written by Mrs. Casimir Lanowick, November 1985)

Many Bible Students don’t think Emek ha Shalom is doing the Lord’s work by working for Israel, as they say His work now is “gathering the Saints.” But Casimir and Elva inspired many nominal Christians to help Israel financially and otherwise.

QUOTES RE NATURAL ISRAEL

“Now we are entering the great Time of Trouble which is to inaugurate Messiah’s Kingdom. During this trouble the Church is to be glorified in the First Resurrection. Then the thousand years of Messiah’s reign with the elect, Spiritual Bride, drawn from both Jews and Gentiles, will begin.

“Still God’s favor will pursue the natural seed of Abraham. Their lessons and chastisements will fit and prepare them more quickly than others of the world to receive the Messianic blessing. The earthly phase of Messiah’s Kingdom will be Israelitish, in that Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets and saintly ones down to John the Baptist are to be made ‘princes in all the earth’ (Psa. 45:16) – the earthly representatives in human perfection of the Spiritual Kingdom of Messiah.

“Naturally enough, Israel will then in a natural way come first into harmony with the Divine arrangement and be the first to get the blessing. However, during the thousand years of the Kingdom, as the Scriptures declare, all nations shall bless themselves in becoming Abraham’s seed – in coming into relationship with the Kingdom, which will have an Israelitish basis. (Jer. 4:2; Isa. 65:16; Gen. 12:3) Eventually, all will be destroyed who do not thus become true Israelites. Thus Abraham’s seed will eventually include all the families of the earth – all for whom God has provided life eternal. As for Gentiles – strangers from God – none will remain.”

THOSE CONSECRATING BETWEEN THE AGES

“It is our thought that with the closing of the door of this Gospel Age there will be no more begetting of the Holy Spirit to the spirit nature. Any afterward coming to God thru consecration, before the inauguration of the restitution work, will be accepted by Him, not to the spirit plane of being, but to the earthly plane. Such would come in under the same conditions as the Ancient Worthies who were accepted of God. The Ancient Worthies came in, no call being opened to them – the High Calling not yet being opened, and the restitution opportunities not open. But they freely gave themselves up to God without knowing what blessings their consecration would bring, except that they had the intimation that they would, in the future life, have a ‘better resurrection’ than would the remainder of the world.

“Our thought is that whoever under such conditions as these will make a full consecration to the Lord, to leave all to follow in His ways, and will live up faithfully, loyally, to that consecration, may be privileged to be counted as a similar class to those who preceded this Gospel Age. We know of no reason why the Lord would refuse to receive those who make a consecration after the close of the Gospel Age High Calling and before the full opening of the Millennium.” (By That Servant, Reprint 5761, September 1, 1915)

JESUS OF NAZARETH – THE ETERNAL GLORY OF THE JEWISH RACE

Perhaps, too, in this enlightened age, as his mind expands, and he takes a comprehensive view of this period of progress, the pupil of Moses may ask himself whether all the princes of the house of David have done so much for the Jews as that prince who was crucified on Calvary. Had it not been for Him, the Jews would have been comparatively unknown, or known only as a high Oriental caste which had lost its country. Has not He made their history the most famous in the world? Has not He hung up their laws in every temple? Has He not vindicated all their wrongs? Has not He avenged the victory of Titus and conquered the Caesars? What success did they anticipate from their Messiah? The wildest dreams of their Rabbis have been far exceeded. Has not Jesus conquered Europe and changed its name into Christendom?

The whole of the new world is devoted to the Semitic principle and its most glorious offspring, the Jewish faith, and the time will come when the vast communities and countless myriads of America and Australia, looking upon Greece, and wondering how so small a space could have achieved such great deeds, will still find music in the songs of Zion and still seek solace in the parables of Galilee.

These may be dreams, but there is one fact which none can contest. Christians may continue to persecute Jews, and Jews may persist in disbelieving Christians, but who can deny that Jesus of Nazareth, the Incarnate Son of the Most High God, is the eternal glory of the Jewish race?

CHRONICLE OF THE GREAT WASTE OF THE GREAT WAR

All across Europe, they marched and rode off to war in the summer of 1914, naively expecting to be home before the leaves fell.

Splendidly attired in uniforms suggestive of Napoleon’s time, they were a tragically innocent generation, with no way to foresee the coming four-year engagement that precipitated the rise of Hitler.

The war to end all wars didn’t. In fact, it was just the start. Leftover tensions led to slaughter of a far greater magnitude 25 years later, and – the case can be made – to Cold War fear of communist aggression, the nuclear arms race and the global instability that persists in the final year of the century.

John Keegan’s study of the Great War makes clear how it all might have been avoided. He writes eloquently with mastery of military history and scholarship that never loses touch with humanity and never gets bogged down in moralizing.

What Keegan accomplishes, through judiciously applied hindsight, is to make us aware of the role of chance in the events of the 20th century. With just a modicum of communication among European leaders, the blood–letting needn’t have happened. History amounts to a game of “what-if?” whose outcome could have been utterly different.

More than a month elapsed between the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo and the actual clash of armies. There was ample time, even with the rather primitive communications technology of the day, to avert the awful four years that followed.

Statesmen seemed oblivious to the uses of the telephone, preferring instead to rely on hand–written notes and telegraphed messages. The result, in Keegan’s words: “a dead march and a dialogue of the deaf.” causing the destruction of the continent.

Even more disconcerting, Keegan also shows how the course of the war was largely determined in advance by a German war planner’s scheme that had little chance of succeeding.

The so–called Schlieffen plan, concocted by the chief of the Great German General Staff, was devised and refined over more than 20 years, beginning in the 1890s. Its thrust was simple: to enable Germany to quickly overwhelm France in the West, then turn its attention to Russia in the East, thus avoiding a protracted, two–front war, for which Germany lacked the resources.

It called for a massive, exquisitely timed wheeling movement of German forces through the Low Countries, to envelop the French from the right. It demanded precision in the transport of troops via rail, and made little allowance for any delays.

“It was to prove the most important official document of the last hundred years,” Keegan writes, “for what it caused to ensue on the field of battle, the hopes it inspired, the hopes it dashed, were to have consequences that persist to this day.”

The inevitable failure of the German game plan provoked the stalemate known as trench warfare and the ensuing carnage in the hellish, barbed-wire strewn No Man’s Land between the ditches.

Millions died in the senseless and unproductive exchange of heavy artillery, machinegun fire and troops advancing on foot in the battles like Verdun and the Meuse and the Somme.

The numbers are staggering. The French lost 2 million soldiers and had 5 million wounded, including thousands so badly disfigured they were sent to rural villages to endure the rest of their days in privacy. The Germans also lost 2 million fighting men. The wounded included 1,264 who lost both legs.

The body counts were equally destructive for the Russians, Austrians, English, Italians and all the rest, up to and including the late-arriving Yanks.

But the country with the greatest percentage of casualties was Serbia, where 15 percent of the population died.

If only, if only. From Keegan’s perspective, none of it should have happened. Nearly a century has passed, yet the Great War still has aspects of profound mystery. Why, he asks, did a continent at the height of intellectual and cultural achievement choose to risk all in existentially pointless slaughter?

Those who returned home after the Armistice of November 1918 were profoundly changed by what Keegan calls the “ultimate mystery of the First World War.”

They had formed intimate bonds of friendship and mutual dependency unimaginable in peace, Keegan observes. To understand this process, he writes, is to understand “the mystery of human life.”

(The First World War, by John Keegan, reviewed by Chris Cobbs, The Orlando Sentinel, August 29, 1999)

IN ANSWER TO “THE GREAT WAR OF 1914”

Indeed it was a “Great War of 1914,” the greatest calamity to happen to the human race up to that time. Not every country took part in the battles, but every country in the world was involved and felt the consequences. We publish John Keegan’s reflection because it is interesting and informative to the younger generation who know very little, if anything, about its horrors. We agree with John Keegan that it is a “mystery” to all who are not acquainted with God’s Word regarding wars and other calamities that have occurred to mankind.

The end of the 1914 War brought the Great Depression, which, like the war, affected all nations. Many good workmen could not find jobs so could not care for their families and keep them from starving.

None of these events were by chance as suggested. They were providential happenings and could not have been prevented by any man. Dan. 4:17 says: “...to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.” Some of the basest of men, Pharaoh, Napoleon, Hitler, et al, were used of God to further His Plan. They were not men of God, but were men of destiny. “Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee: the remainder of wrath shalt thou restrain.” (Psa. 76:10) However, we have had good and honorable rulers at times – in our country as well as in some of the foreign countries.

God permitted the Gentiles to rule in the world for a specific time and when their times ended the Great War of 1914 marked the end of the Gentile Times. The Gentile nations are still here, but God has rejected them and He is now in the process of ejecting them. The Lord’s Great Army is the masses of restless people (Joel 2:11). They are demanding more than they are getting, so they are protesting by marching on their governments.

The United States is the last great nation. Its economic condition is good, better than other countries. It is trying to make all governments Democratic, which is the best government for humanity in its fallen and imperfect condition. But it cannot succeed, for it cannot maintain its good economic condition – not with all the disasters which are costing more money than it has. Not only that, crime, drugs and health concerns are taking more money than it can afford. But if it cannot take care of the people, their voices will get louder and louder, and the marching on Washington will be increased greatly.

Although the U.S. has never sought to conquer territorial possessions, it now seems to think that it has the right and power to dictate to all countries. This is most notable in regard to Israel, and this meddling seems to be for the purpose of destroying that nation. But God will prevail. He says in Jer. 30:11: “...though I make a full end of all nations whither I have scattered thee, yet I will not make a full end of thee: but I will correct thee in measure, and will not leave thee altogether unpunished.” This is repeated in Jer. 46:28.

Why will He not make a full end of the Israelite nation, even though they have been just as sinful as the others? For their Fathers sake – Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. He made promises that He will not break. Also, the Lord knew what He was doing when He called them His “Chosen People.” The Messiah came from the Jewish nation. “Salvation is of the Jews.” (John 4:22) The Kingdom will be Israelitish with Jerusalem as the capital of the world.

“And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us his ways, and we will walk in his paths:’ for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.” (Isa. 2:3) The law will be administered from the heavenly Kingdom and handed down to the earthly Kingdom. The earthly Kingdom will be in the hands of the Ancient and Youthful Worthies. They will be “Princes in all the earth.” (Psa. 45:16) In other words the Worthies will be the visible rulers in the Kingdom.

Israel, “Arise, shine; for thy light has come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.” (Isa. 60:1) “And the Gentiles shall come to thy light.” (Isa. 60:3)

“I will restore thy judges as at the first, and thy counsellors as at the beginning: afterward thou shalt be called, the city of righteousness, the faithful city.” (Isa. 1:26)

“0 Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee... thou art mine.” (Isa. 43:1) “I create Jerusalem a rejoicing, and her people a joy. I will REJOICE in Jerusalem, in my people: and the voice of weeping shall be no more heard in her, nor the voice of crying.” (Isa. 65:18,19)

“I will overturn, overturn; overturn, it: and it shall be no more, until he comes whose right it is; and I will give it him. I will judge thee in the place where thou wast created, in the land of thy nativity.” (Ezek. 21:27,30)

“I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. I will pour upon the House of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.” (Zech. 12:10)

LET US STAND IN THE GAP IN PRAYER

Has anything really changed in the Moslem Middle East? On September 5, 1999, the Islamic fundamentalist group, Hamas, attempted two simultaneous car bombs – one in Tiberias and one in Haifa. Miraculously, both bombs exploded prematurely, only killing the terrorists. This was in response to the new treaty between Barak and Arafat signed the night before.

While we need to strive to make peace and seek to live at peace with our neighbors in the Middle East, we also need to know the difference between true peace and a peace that is but a wolf dressed in sheep’s clothing. Jesus told us that we are often found as “sheep in the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.” (Matt. 10:16) When the world “says peace, peace, when there is no peace” (Jer. 6:14), then we need to beware and pray the prayer that Jesus taught us, “...deliver us from evil.” (Matt. 6:13) We need to pray for God’s peace, not the world’s peace, for our Jewish and Christians brothers in these trying times.

We need to pray for the Jewish residents of Hebron, who still live with constant threat of terror attacks. Pray for their safety and pray that the tragic events of 1929 will never be repeated.

We need to intercede for Israel and the Christians of the Middle East, that we would be delivered from the curses and attacks that are leveled against us. Pray that the nations of this world will hear and understand the meaning of the evil being taught by Islamic religious leaders, as they spew their hatred against Christians and Jews, and not be fooled. Pray that the world’s desire for real peace will not be confused with a “false peace,” giving into the demands of those Moslem leaders whose aim is to destroy or conquer non–Moslems. There are few Moslem leaders who are like Anwar Sadat and King Hussein of Jordan. We must find them and work with them and resist the tactics of the others.

Finally, we need to pray that the Lord God of Israel, the God of the Universe, would reveal Himself to the Moslem nations. Only as they turn to Him will there be real peace in the Middle East, peace for the Christians of the Middle East, and peace for the people and land of Israel. (See Psalm 34:15–17; 91:15; 122:6)
